I got Puyo Pop Fever on the gamecube back as a child and was so intrigued by the new art art style after initially owning Puyo Pop on the GBA which had a styler closer to the Compile art style. Loved the English voices a lot. Was sad that Fever 2 and beyond never got English releases. Well, until Puyo Tetris.
I remember that during that time, the game industry in the west just had this absolute irrational *hatred* of anything Japanese. In addition there was this huge focus on "realism" and making everything gritty and edgy. Games that had actual colors in them were deemed "outdated". Jokes on them though, games like puyo pop fever are timeless, while a lot of those games that at the time were treated as the most amazing, modern things ever, have aged terribly.
Puyo Puyo Fever is still my favorite Puyo Puyo game! I love the artstyle, the gameplay, the character voices (I more so enjoy the engilsh voice acting for this game) and pretty much everything else! I used to play this game almost every month once upon a time until I had an addiction with another video game that took over my mind. That game was Cel Damage, and that occurred in 2021, 20 years after Cel Damage was released. Even one of the voice actors in Puyo Puyo Fever’s English Dub voiced in Cel Damage! I’ll let you look that up… 😁
The voice actor was Thesally Lerner, the voice actor who voiced both Klug from Puyo Fever's English dub, and Violet in Cel Damage. She also played the female characters in The Sims 2 and Lisa in Silent Hill, among other roles.
Another thing I love about the Fever era is that the Characters from Primp are counterparts from the Compile era for example Amitie/Arle, Raffina/Rulue
2:04 There's theory that Sonic team did a similar thing with Sonic Heroes, where they tried to retcon character stories and don't use any of the characters that were created before the dreamcast era.
It’s so nice to see someone do a retrospective on this game. While my “introduction” to Puyo Puyo was through Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine as a kid, the GameCube port of Puyo Pop Fever was something I would play nonstop. The Fever Rule really made it addicting to play.
I'd love a video about chronicles and a rerelease collection for all of the puyo games without localization here on modern consles. Also your a real GOAT for keeping puyo puyo content on TH-cam relevant since I so rarely find new stuff based on my favorite game series to enjoy. Honestly to think if 15/20 anniversary, 7, and Chronicles where release in the us and promoted very well they could've bring great memories for many people and have more fans of this simple masterpiece of a series.
I really like this Puyo game the most because it makes the most use of its storybook setting and the fact that it is an arcade game as heck. The art style of the game really radiates early 2000s Japanese merchandise for girls like hello kitty and 1st 2nd gen pretty cure! The LOUD techno sfx, soundtrack and hardcore pace of the game also makes this Puyo game the most modern arcade Puyo game to have ever existed. This game WAS MEANT to steal quarters from people who played Raffine's mode.
This is my favorite video game franchise ever. Got me through a lot during my teenage years. I had a real nasty spine surgery on November 1st, 2021. Took me a while figuring out to walk and sit properly again. Imagije my surprise when I saw the English translation for Puyo Puyo Chronicle released just a few days after! I had tried to play the game back in 2018, but couldn't progress due to language barrier. Immediately fell in love with this game and the dialog between all the characters. Ally alone revitalized so much of my dormant love for this franchise and I actually want to improve my skill. You make some damn good puyo content, man. I'm down for whatever you post, but i'd really like to see the Chronicle stuff.
I find it interesting that Fever got so may ports in Japan, and to a lesser extent Europe, while here in the US, we only got the GameCube and DS versions.
I hope that If there's a Puyo Puyo Tetris 3, they add a Fever Ruleset. I can see a lot of chaos with Fever meeting Tetris, since Fever DOES work with Tetris, as we've seen with Big Bang, and the Boss Battles!
I hope that doesn’t actually happened, I don’t want this franchise to be tied to other successful one, just because Sega doesn’t think it can succeed on its own. I also just don’t like Puyo Tetris 2 as a game.
I would love to see you review the Puyo Puyo Tetris games! They were my introduction to the series and I instantly fell in love with the aesthetic they went for 😭♥
I’d love to see you do a video covering Puyo Puyo 7! It’s such a bizarre game to me, and I’d love to know more about its development. People never really seem to discuss 7 despite it introducing some fan-favorite characters. Honestly, the whole thing feels like a fanfiction!
The GameCube version of this used to be pretty expensive a few years ago, but it's gone down in price on ebay recently. I'm thinking of getting it soon. I suck ass at Puyo but I love the sound effects, music and art style. And the English dub of Puyo Pop Fever is literally a 4Kids dub 😂 (Except for Raffina pulling a Shadow The Hedgehog)
Really did enjoy watching this video about Puyo Pop Fever! It was one of the games that really got me into the fever mode a lot waaaay back. And hearing about the history this game had really enjoy able. part of me did wish the other games were released out here liked PP15th, PP7 20th and Chronicle as well I will very much be looking forward to your latest videos
Great video but you forgot to mention important fact about this game. This is the last dreamcast game sega made for the console, they turn into a 3rd party publisher in late 2001 and discontinue the dreamcast in the west following it. Dreamcast still got games from 3rd partyin japan but discontinued in 2007, puyo pop fever was a 2004 release on the console.
Considering that I've had loads of adventures in the two DS ports(which honestly paved the way for future Puyo games, in my opinion) and with its characters, especially with Gogotte(my favorite character alongside Schezo and Maguro and Tee(and Arle and Witch and Dark Prince and the Fever ARS trio), which I tended to nickname him "Malt"), the Fever games are really fun and they're my favorite games, even if the ruleset has its problems. These games really paved the way for my life not only for knowing new Puyo stuff, but even other obscure or "new" games(for me), and kinda started the idea of training writing stuff and engineering stuff in retro games. Great video! 👍
I always loved the fever 1 cast I feel like it adds to the wacky and colorful nature of fever 1 Though I understand why people wouldn't like the VAs for the dub But honestly I don't mind
I adore how cheesy this game's localization is. I know people like to dunk on the dub but I honestly prefer some of the voices compared to the ones in ppt/champions.
the voice acting sounds more fantasy and into the theme of Puyo Fever feeling like a storybook. While the modern Puyo games more so feel general kids anime.
You could use the arcade or Dreamcast version to fight against other players using Fightcade. It's the only way to go since servers for PC are long dead.
Ohhh god yeah that review! UK magazines at the time just really prioritized comedy over giving genuine information on a game. There was often blatant favouritism over whatever genre the editor preferred, and stuff that just LOOKED like it would be bad would get the worst most phoned in review after playing barely an hour. Playstation Magazine did all the same stuff with wrestling games instead. (Supposedly because "wrestling is gay" ugh) It's always a nightmare to look back on how many great games got overlooked just cos some tosser thought it'd be funnier to roast it for three pages 😩
"...time-warped in from 15 years ago."? The series started in 1991. Did one particular British reviewer pull that statement outta his arse? Nintendo still hates Sega confirmed? Plausible.
It drives me crazy that the newer puyo tetris games pronouns Arle like that, I legit died a little hearing it. It is pronounced 'ar-lee', I don't care if 'arl, with a silent E' is the correct pronunciation of those words, it is so unsatisfying to hear that, let alone on a protag character. In my honest opinion, PPF did her name justice by calling her 'ar-lee'. Its sounds smoother, crisper, cuter and a way better protag name than what she got in puyo tetris Doesn't even make sense at all. The Japanese name is three syllables, PPF was at least two, then tetris is one syllable. Also calling her 'arly' doesn't hit the same as 'arle'. So i think there's a huge dilemma regarding her name and the pronunciation
She’s named after Arles, which is a city in France, hence why “Ar-uhl” has always been the true way to pronounce her name. The Japanese pronunciation, “ah-ru-ru”, even reflects.
Puyo pop is just the better name for the west imo rolls dfo the tongue easier Most people can't even say the current name right despite bajillions of sound clips that do Also TAH DAH DAH is peak :(
I love how raffina says damn in the English version, it’s just the cherry on the sundae
they should've kept her iconic line in puyo puyo tetris 1 and 2 despite having the e10 rating compared to puyo puyo fever

I love Fever1. I think it's the most repayable Puyo game. The only one I could ever see myself trying to speedrun!
years of my life and i never figured out the credits thing was spot the difference...

You have good take on this game's lore.
And I'd like you to cover all three of those games someday.
Puyo Puyo Fever is still my favorite Puyo Puyo game! I love the artstyle, the gameplay, the character voices (I more so enjoy the engilsh voice acting for this game) and pretty much everything else! I tried looking that up, and I still have no idea who that voice actor is (No offense to your mystery)

Not sure if you ever did make that sequel video but I'd be super itnerested!
Great video! I love how in-depth it is.

Puyo Puyo Tetris was my first exposure to Puyo Puyo. Would be really nice to hear you talk about it!

The Puyo Pop name dates back to 1999. It's a shame that Puyo Pop Fever 2 didn't come out in the west...
I always loved the fever 1 cast I feel like it adds to the wacky and colorful nature of fever 1 Though I understand why people wouldn't like the VAs for the dub But honestly I don't mind
A puyopuyo~n video would be really neat!
thanks for this video!!! fever is awesome!
klug aint average in puyo puyo fever 2. bro's body gets possessed by a book
I adore how cheesy this game's localization is. I know people like to dunk on the dub but I honestly prefer some of the voices compared to the ones in ppt/champions.

Wish fever ruleset was in puyo puyo tetris 2 as an actully rule set

Hey does anyone know where this comes from? 7:42
Also are you using the jp gba rom with the English language? That's an earlier translation
I thought the Dreamcast was discontinued in 2002!
Wait! Apparently it was the 31st of March 2001! It’s a miracle Sonic Adventure 2 got sold! XD
Do you know if the Dreamcast version is any good
I haven't played it myself but i've never seen anyone complain about it, so it's probably passable.
It's the same as the PC version, but has the English translation on disk and an easter egg that changes the Dreamcast menu to a 3D map.
