    Audrey's actually in a sense a victim of her looks and fragility. But no way she's overrated.The Nun's Story, Two for the Road, Wait Until Dark, The Children’s Hour all of them proves she's capable of playing roles that are different from those people often attach to her name.
    As for Sandler, I think playing a safe bet just proves he's nowhere near the best comedian actors of his generation, let alone actors overall. Long ago I'd say something similar about Jim Carey but then he made Truman's Show and more importantly ESOTSM, a masterpiece in which he showed glimpses of that comedic note that always goes with him, but elevated it to a fantastic level. Sandler could never do that.

  • @yashnigam6

    The thing about Will Smith is that while I agree that he wants to be a leading man in blockbusters, his choices have in the long run hindered him in that pursuit. If you look at other leading men from the 90s who have had lasting careers (Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, Leo DiCaprio, etc.) they've all been willing to take risks and play against type in a way that Will was never willing to do. Because of that, they established a perception that they at least had the ability to play complex characters, which I think even today is key to a long and consistent career as a blockbuster star.
    If you look at some of the big blockbuster films of the past 2 decades, a lot of them had leading men characters who were vulnerable or in moral grey areas (i.e. the Daniel Craig James Bond movies, Nolan's Batman, Iron Man, Logan, The Bourne series etc.). Even non-franchise blockbusters like Inception, or Tarantino's more recent work have characters who aren't your typical 90s action hero who can do no wrong and always saves the day.
    Will seems to have missed this, or just isn't willing to break from his 90s persona. IMO, it's why many of his movies that were supposed to be blockbusters were mostly met with 'meh' reactions.

    • @highnoon7097
      @highnoon7097 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      He's also been blessed with the opportunities to play more challenging roles but didn't stick his neck out. Turning down Django (after initially accepting the role) shows he's either got really bad advisors or is just the most unambitious actor in the business.

    • @yashnigam6
      @yashnigam6 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@highnoon7097 I remember watching Good Time not too long ago, and for some reason it made me think of The Pursuit of Happyness. Both movies are about men who find themselves in a desperate situation and need money fast. Both are about men who are devoted to their family (Will with his son, Pattinson with his brother). Both leading characters use their charisma and charm to navigate the world. But whereas Will's character is constantly noble and always chooses the moral and legal way to get out of trouble, Rob's character is a scumbag who will manipulate, cheat and steal to get what he needs. Anyways, the reason I bring up Good Time is because it's an example of the type of movie Will could have done to show that he can subvert type, while still playing a similar type of character (a charming, confident guy). It's like how Matthew McConaughay subverted the fact that he always plays the same southern guy by still playing a southern dude, but in roles like True Detective and Dallas Buyers Club.

    There are two types of good artists:
    1. The ones who prove their value and surprise us on rare occasion.
    2. The ones who have a lifetime of achivements, whose long carreer is a display of talent.
    We are intrigued by the first ones and we tend to get bored of the second ones in time. With the first ones, we never know the real scope of their ability and that could be alluring; with the second ones, we're always expecting them to push themselves and exceed everyone's expectations and we're unfairly disappointed if they don't. While the first ones are simply good artists, the second ones are what we call masters because the more they excell at something, the higher the expectations and the more it takes to live up to them. Adam Sandler is an example of the first type and Meryl illustrates the second one.

    I love Bill Murray, and I agree he's perfectly suited to the deadpan sensibility of Wes Anderson's characters and their dialogue. I think recently he's only been in there for the cameo roles which is fine to for laughs, but I do wish he could have one last sizeable WA performance. I particularly love him in Rushmore and of course Life Aquatic. He's quite effortless at bringing the melancholy to his downhearted characters, like where he says "I'm a little bit lonely these days" in Rushmore, or "I wonder if it remembers me" in Aquatic. You don't know whether to laugh, smile or even tear up a little.

Her "Jersey" accent constantly slips in and out but even besides that, she *just can't act.* It's CRINGEY watching her overacting pass as an "acceptable" performance, but sadly she seems is always considered the "best thing" about these films and is always given the most focus. She can play Julia Child in one movie, and turn around to play Margaret Thatcher in yet another. She plays in the Charlie Kaufman/Spike Jonez "Adaptation" then turns around and makes the David Hare/Stephen Daldry "The Hours."

      I couldn't agree more. You'll have trouble finding someone like Meryl out there, who has such an extense repertoire of characters and delivers every single time. It is unfair to judge an actor's ability or quality based primarly on their recent role choices. If an actor has proven to be capable, they are, regarless of how safe/unsafe you may think some of their roles are. Nowadays people judge Meryl's quality as an actor as if they expected her to do something that she hasn't done yet, but the thing is... she has already done pretty much everything: that tells us how great of an actor she is indeed.

    Meryl Streep is not overrated. I use overrated a lot btw and some of my faves have giving performances underserving of the praise but Meryl is A FANTASTIC actor and does most things so well. She can be subtle, she can be over the top, she can be safe, she can take risks. She can do anything. Sophie's Choice was a GAME CHANGER amongst what Hollywood actors could do. Sissy is probably one of my favorite actors as well and she has a lot of respect amongst actors, it's just she hasn't done anything really that great recently, but most people know Carrie and Badlands so... Glenn and Sissy are the two actors that match Streep in my opinion. Actors such as Jessica Lange and Susan Sarandon are overrated beyond belief. The older she become the safer? Mamma Mia may be corny film but her taking the role was not risky. Many thought it was a ridiculous casting and she delivered. The Devil Wears Prada has probably become her signature role in the last 20 years.

    Who's overrated? All of them... They are all STARS! Movie Actors have to be both actor & star. What's an actor with out a stage? But calling them "Stars" is like calling them saints, and saints they are NOT!
    I like to think Tashiro Mifune is the greatest Actor/Star, as he is a chameleon, who is always still recognizable, despite his dynamic characterization. He can play a short young man, a tall young man, an old man (I Live In Fear), a John Wayne hero or a slick Cary Grant type... Mifune is rightly celebrated as a great artist, but most people do not know his name, so is he a star? MAYBE MIFUNE IS OVERRATED!!!!
    I love Barbara Stenwick for the roles she plays, but that's the part, not Stenwick... Stenwick was an ok actress. They always give her parts that are like a soliloquy: The writers always give her over the top statements to the audience. I think Helena Bonham Carter is a great actress, but I always forget her name, so she can't be called a star... IMHO
