imo it's tough for actors who aren't from the US to break into Hollywood and get opportunities. The fact that Peaky Blinders was a small BBC show that grew organically because of word of mouth shows how great an actor he is. Gave him worldwide recognition that he deserves
Toni Collette being passed over for an Oscar for Hereditary was criminal.

The Oscars are pointless, irrelevant, and mean nothing. Her performance in _Hereditary_ is truly great, and an award has no bearing on that.

Harry Dean Stanton. He brought a wonderful sense of world weariness to his characters. Any time he pops up in anything I'm always happy to see him. His one true leading role in Paris Texas is one of my favorite performances of all time.

Lance Henriksen doesn’t get as much recognition as he should! He’s such a good actor!
For me Laurence Fishburne, Liev Schreiber, Hugh Dancy, Timothy Olyphant, Bridget Fonda, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Giovanni Ribisi, James McAvoy, William Petersen, and Kevin Bacon are all really underrated.
Jesse Plemons - he's still VERY young and has lots of time to start getting recognition, but he's already given so much amazing performances in film and TV over the last 10 years. Whether it's the lovable everyman caught up in a life of crime in Fargo S2, the calculating incel/abusive spaceship captain in Black Mirror, or his several great movie performances in stuff ranging from arthouse dramas like I'm Thinking of Ending Things or The Master to mainstream studio comedies like Game Night. He's very nuanced and creates characters who feel real and he always increases the quality of whatever he's in. He can use similar deadpan expressions to make a scene either hilarious or insanely uncomfortable and I think he deserves the same attention that people like Adam Driver and Robert Pattinson are getting.
I agree with you, Jesse is very underrated. From when I first saw him in Breakfast Bad being complete sociopath to Judas And The Black Messiah as a calm but powerful detective. The man has some serious acting chops.

Philip Seymour Hoffman so perfectly inhabited every character he played that I swear many people don't even know how many times they've seen him. In every scene I feel like they just grabbed a guy off the street and said "just be yourself". RIP Philip Seymour Hoffman.
Big fan of Ben Foster as an actor, always brings an intensity to everything he's in. Very underrated in my opinion

I agree. His versatility is amazing. Whether he's playing a hippie father in the woods, a Russian mobster, or the king of Gondor, he is always believable.
Same with Mads Mikkelsen and Matthias Schoenaerts :
they can play anybody with any mindset or personality from any time-period!
I'd say Jesse Plemons, Lakeith Stanfield, Daniel Kaluuya, Alex Wolff and most underrated of anyone imo is Ben Foster. Such a powerhouse of an actor. Doesn't get the recognition I think his talent deserves.
JEFF BRIDGES! Well, up until about 5 or 6 years ago anyway. People are finally starting to recognize how brilliant he is now, but for decades he flew completely under the radar. How he didn't even get nominated for Fearless is beyond me.

There's something about her performance in that that's just so understated and real. There's no ACTOR-y moments. She's just a mom, struggling and living. Probably the first time I had seen someone in a movie that didn't feel like a "character in a movie".
Did not know it was her in Knives Out until the credits.

Mark Rylance and Michael Stuhlbarg. Stuhlbarg especially, his monologue at the end of Call Me By Your name was absolutely brutal and yet so loving at the same time and the range of emotion he shows in A Serious Man is such a joy to watch.

Ethan Hawke is a extremely underrated actor in my opinion I mean he not extremely underrated just look at his filmography he did the before trilogy dead poets society boyhood now boyhood I think he deserved that nomination he is a worth of a talent in my mind he plays it like a naturalistic approach his acting he very versatile with his work and he did romance with the before trilogy he did horror with Sinister and the purge recently and shakespeare adaptations and literary novel adaptations such as hamlet and great expectations so real his acting he deserved to be on this list for sure
Not James Cagney but James Caan. He’s underrated for sure even if he is always a criminal. Great call on Kyle MacLachlan. He is ridiculously smart as an actor

I would like to add Willem Dafoe, who can carry a movie on his own even if he is not in the main role. From my home I can definitely recommend Klaus Kinski (e.g. in Werner Herzog films like Nosferatu, Fitzcarraldo) and Bruno Ganz (he could play an angel in Wings of Desire, as well as Hitler in Downfall) and Klaus-Maria Brandauer (Mephisto, Out of Africa, Never Say Never Again). They are legends in Europe but probably rather unknown in the US.
Jk simmons. I know he gets credit from some. Hes amazing. Watching counterpart right now. He deserved more recognition for this role
Could not agree with you more! Counterpart as a whole deserved more recognition than it got! JK Simmons is fantastic in it and so is Harry Lloyd (another actor I feel is very talented but doesn’t get enough credit)!

Rebecca Hall for me. Everytime she's on a scene, you're eyes just glued to her acting.
Christine is definitely one of her best performances in a film.
I've always found Gary Oldman and Rufus Sewel to be especially underrated. *Gary Oldman simply takes you into his "soul"* whether as a *hillbilly Hitler* in "The Fifth Element" (1997), a *desperately misunderstood Beethoven* in "Immortal Beloved" (1994), a *fatherly cop* in the Nolan "Batman" series, the *teacher / "uncle" figure* you can warm up to in the "Harry Potter" series, or a *frighteningly monsterous pedophile* in "Hannibal" (2001). And while I find that actresses in the English-speaking world do indeed get the attention they earn, they simply don't get enough good roles, rather then being "underrated" in the sense of them not being known enough!
With Oldman don't forget Sid & Nancy where he WAS Sid and The Professional:)
One actor I find underrated would be Brad Dourif, he may be best known for "Child's Play" and "Lord of the Rings", but he is quite a versatile thespian. He can be terrifying like in The Exorcist III" and can be innocently sympathetic like in "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest".
His performance in "Wise Blood" is something to see as well.
Definitely, and great in Deadwood, and Mississippi Burning. Great scene with him, Michael Rooker, and Gene Hackman.
His performance in Rob Zombie's Halloween 2 when he discovered Annie's corpse is epic. He even sounds like Chucky from his reaction (no pun intended) in the scene.

Honestly, Jake Gyllenhaal is the most underrated actor of this century. I mean, Brokeback Mountain, Prisoners, Nightcrawler, even Spider Man Far from Home. This guy is a Diamond! And barely any recognition from awards. Truly criminally underrated.
Kirsten Dunst. Admittedly she's been in a lot of mediocre films, but even in those she always gives an exciting and engaging performance. When she's in stronger films/TV (Fargo, Melancholia, On Becoming a God in Central Florida) she really shines as an unbelievable talent. I think she's recently discovered her ability as a character actress and hope she embraces this more in her career.

Mickey Rourke is a great actor who I think is underrated. The characters he has portrayed have been strikingly different in movies like 9 1/2 Weeks, Barfly, Sin City and The Wrestler. And he was so good in them.
Mickey is incredible. Just look at Angel Heart, Barfly and The Wrestler, among others. Of course, he's his own worse enemy, but that's who he is - he's both his own protagonist and antagonist in his real life movie. He can go to places that almost any other screen actor can only dream of.
And Spun as well, Spun is probably my favourite film he’s in… fucking LOVE Spun
I love his Bukowski (even though Bukowski didn't), he really embodied what I felt the person who wrote Bukowski's poems would be like.

In terms of newer/younger names, I'm a big fan of Anya Taylor-Joy. Particularly for her performances in The Witch and Thoroughbreds. Just mesmerizing. She's got a great career ahead of her.

John C. Reilly, I would agree is quite underrated. I know most of the general movie-going public are most familiar with his work in "Talladega Nights", "Step Brothers", and movies like that (and I enjoy his comedic side in those) and I have a few friends that really enjoyed his comedic work as Steve Brule, but for me, I got really introduced to him through his films with Paul Thomas Anderson, with "Hard Eight" and especially with "Boogie Nights" and "Magnolia". And when I think about his performances spanning those three movies alone, it's astonishing how much range he has as an actor, to be able to play the spectrum of drama to comedy and to be able to do it really convincingly. I'd love to see more of that side from John (and I'd love to see him work with PTA again).
I'm honestly not super familiar with Isabelle Huppert, though I'm certainly aware of her work and the reputation she has, so I can't exactly weigh in on her fairly.
Same with James Cagney. Unfortunately, my range of literacy with classic films is not great and I'm honestly not super familiar with Cagney's work.
Nicolas Cage, I think, is very underrated. It's just unfortunate that he spent so much time on films that were not suitable for him to really show his skills (though, I think even in some of his bad films like "Wicker Man", he made the films at least entertaining with how zany he played them). Now that he's back doing films like "Bad Lieutenant - Port of Call New Orleans" under Werner Herzog's direction and "Mandy" and such, I'm glad we're more or less seeing a Nicolas Cage resurgence.
I really, REALLY like Jesse Eisenberg. I know when I first saw him in "Zombieland", yeah, a lot of people were calling him a Michael Cera clone. But I'll be honest, IMO, I've never seen Michael Cera (who I've personally never connected with) come close to the kind of performances Eisenberg has given in films like "Adventureland" and "The Social Network" (haven't seen "The Squid and the Whale" yet, but I've heard he's quite good in that as well).
Adam Sandler is definitely underrated. Definitely wish he'd do more dramatic roles like "Punch-Drunk Love", "Reign Over Me" and "Uncut Gems" than he does.
Not super familiar with Toni Collette's full body of work, but I do enjoy and respect the work I've seen from her. Definitely quite talented.
Also not super familiar with Kyle MacLachlan, but I can certainly respect the work he's put in, and yeah, I feel like the reputation he has from "Twin Peaks" certainly speaks for itself.
I don't know how underrated my top pick technically is, but I don't think Tom Cruise gets the kind of credit as a serious dramatic actor that he deserves, because I feel like a lot of people I know (admittedly, not many of them are big cinephiles) see him primarily as Ethan Hunt or as Maverick from "Top Gun". And while I enjoy him in those and enjoy those films, I think his work as a dramatic actor is very underrated (I thought he was terrific as a leading man in "Jerry Maguire" and I thought he was overlooked a lot in "Rain Man" because of Dustin Hoffman's work in that film, but I think Cruise really held that film's emotional core together well). I particularly love when he takes his natural charisma and on-screen magnetism and plays against type with more unlikeable characters, like Vincent in "Collateral" and ESPECIALLY Frank TJ Mackey in "Magnolia" (which I think is the best performance I've seen him give by a good mile. All of his scenes in it are fantastic, but I was blown away by the subtlety he shows in the interview scenes and his final seminar scene, and I thought his scene with Jason Robards' character near the end was tremendous). I really wish Cruise would do more serious dramatic work like that.
I'd also echo a few posts already made and say Robert Pattinson (he's proving himself quite well already, but I think at least at this point, we're still only seeing glimpses of how brilliant he can be and with how carefully he picks his roles, I think he'll be a REALLY exciting actor to watch out for over the coming years) and Walton Goggins (he hasn't made too much of a big splash in film, unfortunately, but his performances in the TV shows "The Shield" and "Justified" are both absolutely FANTASTIC and really do a great job of showing his skill and range as an actor).
People forget that John C. Reilly started off as a dramatic actor and the slowly worked his way into comedy
I think he's always switched between comedic and dramatic parts.
Sarah Polley. As an actress she was always underrated. But now as an a director and writer she's again underrated.
And she’s a beautiful author.
Oh and Steve Martin. He can play dramatic roles very well. Very relatable in his dramatic performances too.
Paul Dano, nearly steals the show in EVERY film he’s in and that includes There Will Be Blood

Gloria Grahame.
Raw, earthy, instinctive performances that bring out the humanity of the character she's playing. When you watch Grahame in a scene, you feel like you're experiencing a real person rather than an actor playing a role. The result is an irrepressible screen presence that keeps the viewer rivetted for the duration of the movie. Even in bit parts, Grahame is capable of giving performances worthy of an Academy Award nomination. Not sure you could describe her talent as mastery of craft, rather it's more of a gift and I bet that even Grahame herself didn't really understand what she had.
Saw Cage in Wild at Heart a month ago, and damn my opinion on him changed. Such a wonderful, spontaneous energy from him.
His early movies were great! Before he went completely Hollywood.
He won an Oscar and then became the biggest action star in the world in just a two year period.
He was great in Red Rock West. Nic Cage is a National Treasure.

Mia Wasikowska - amazing talent and unmatched for versatility. I don't think I've seen a performance that has touched and affected me as much as her portrayal of Sophie in HBO's In Treatment - Season One (it's one for the ages). She absolutely becomes the character in her movies, often she's unrecognizable from one role to the next. The same actor who gave such a marvelous performance as Jane Eyre, was the mysterious and dangerous India in Park chan Wook's "Stoker" and the flinty heroine in the marvelous outback film "Tracks". Many people associate her with Alice in Wonderland, but that is a far cry from the many edgy and challenging films she has in her filmography, from some of the most creative directors (some of my favorites). She also can have a very mysterious presence on screen, both old soul and childlike at the same time. Seeing just one or two of her performances is only skimming the surface. I think she's remarkable.
Yessss, I completely agree!! I commented Léa Seydoux and I feel she is kind of similar to Mia Wasikowska. They both have such strong faces and act quite subtly. You can tell just by looking at their eyes what emotions they are expressing if that makes sense. And both are definitely underrated!!
@@-Roos97- Seydoux is in the fine tradition of subtle european actors - over there they're less inclined to see histrionics as the definition of good acting. Don't know if she is underrated in France, but I think she's wise to not do too many Hollywood films. Isabelle Huppert is one of my favorites. The thing with Wasikowska is that she has the versatility of a Gary Oldman in his prime, but then this fascinating presence that is put to great use in films like Jane Eyre or Stoker - yet she can totally nail down a down-to-earth all-American girl. She's also wise to stay away from formula Hollywood films and focus on creative projects that she finds interesting.

John Garfield is one of the most underrated actors in Hollywood history, died way too young at 39. He was a method actor before Brando. Force of Evil, The Postman Always Rings Twice, Body and Soul..

Maggie, you mentioned Boris Karloff. I think he is too often thought of as just a horror film star. But, he had a great resume as a serious actor in many disciplines. And he had a great respect for his craft. I would suggest that people see his final film, Targets.

That’s because he was reading Coen brothers lines word for word. Cage usually improves and adds in his own twist. Which doesn’t work sometimes.

Why does that matter
First time comment here. Pretty solid list of actors there, especially, Kyle Maclachlan. Maclachlan was in a very underrated sci-fi film called The Hidden (1987) that had other elements, which included satire, action, greed and selflessness that make it an underrated gem (Check it out if you like). Nicholas Cage can be a really great actor if he wants to be in some notable films, such as Raising Arizona, Face Off, Bringing out the Dead, Leaving Las Vegas and Mandy etc. Other notable underrated actors I would say are Cillian Murphy, John C. McGinley, Peter Weller, Dennis Quaid, Jim Caviezel, James Spader, Joaquin Phoenix, Gabriel Byrne, Michael Keaton, Liam Neeson, and a list that goes on. It's also really wonderful when actors can go outside of there comfort zone and show the versatile range that makes them a gifted actor. Overall, great list there.
What about Jake Gyllenhaal?. He's been in the best movies from the past 20 years and yet no one is talking about him!

isabelle huppert is amazing. she was fab in la ceremonie. Jonathan Pryce is another underrated actor, Tomorrow Never Dies, Carrington, Evita, Brazil, the Two popes (finally he had an oscar nomination )

Nice Cage his performance in Leaving Las Vegas is astonishing its that good one of the all time great performances
Completely agree about Cagney's unnerving quality- he can be really scary in his intensity, in both subtle and more electric ways. I put together a tribute video to him on my channel and, watching his filmography to gather clips, was impressed anew by how far Cagney went into his roles, and by his awesome versatility.
I've been on an 80's action binge lately and have developed an appreciation for actors turning junk dialogue into gold much like Rutger Hauer, James Woods or Gary Oldman in his many villainous roles. My recommendations Steve James (effortlessly charismatic and convincing in American Ninja cheese plus he was one of The Baseball Furies in The Warriors) Basil Wallace (watch a clip of him as Screwface in Marked For Death and follow it up with his demo reel or Blood Diamond performance) and Janeatte Goldstein (Vasquez from Aliens and John Connor's adopted parent in T2) who are both chameleons and extremely underrated.
For me top 5 is Toni Collette, Michael Shannon, Noomi Rapace, Fairuza Balk, Elle Fanning. So many more tbh

Gary Oldman
Amy Acker and Sarah Shahi from Person of Interest.
They’re so incredible they transcended their roles. Amy and Sarah are two of those rare actors who come along that have the ability to just jump off the page. I’ll make an argument they’re on the level of Bryan Cranston. Criminally underrated actresses.
PoI is one of my favorite shows, and I also think that both of those actresses are very underrated; their individual characters and the relationship between them were so compelling and well-developed. I particularly loved Amy Acker's performance; it's hard for me to explain concisely how much I enjoyed her work on that show, but suffice it to say that I thought she was consistently fantastic the whole time she was on it. Root is one of my all time favorite TV characters. Shahi of course was also great as Shaw; she brought so many dimensions out of the character while staying true to Shaw's nature and personality.
Another actor from PoI who I think is underrated is Michael Emerson. I feel like he's often typecast as a creepy weirdo, but on PoI he got to play a really complex character, and he executed the role beautifully. Many of my favorite scenes on that show are just conversations between him and Acker or him alone speaking to the Machine.

personally i think joan cusack is an underrated actor. she has this really uniquely funny presence in films like school of rock and grosse pointe blank, but she's mostly been relegated to supporting roles. i would love to see her as a lead in a film with that sort of energy.
i'm also a big fan of keanu reeves. people love to dunk on him and i think some criticisms of him are valid but i think he can embody characters really well. like, ted in bill and ted and john wick are really different characters, and he totally disappears into those roles.

The Vanishing, Session 9, Trainspotting, Westworld, Ozark, and I recently saw Tyrannosaur which I absolutely loved but is a fairly bleak, morally ambiguous and unsettling story for most audiences, but I'd be curious to hear what your thoughts are on it.
First time I’ve seen this video, and it’s made my day (even though I’m aware this is an older video) that you also call Toni Colette “the female Phillip Seymour Hoffman”. That’s always my thoughts when her acting chops are brought up. Many critics love both, but yet they both don’t have the awards to their names that they really should. Although I’d say she’s probably more well known to the world at large than the late, great PSH ever was. I broke my heart the day he passed as he was one of my favourite actors, but sadly for most of the day (and the days that followed) I was greeted with “Who’s Phillip Seymour Hoffman?” even though most would have seen him perform at least one of his smaller roles.
Cage was really good in the movie Joe from a few years ago and Eisenberg was also great in Adventureland. I think Guy Pearce is underrated. His performance in The Rover was fantastic.

Hey Maggie! I'm sure you've seen it but The Roaring Twenties is definitely Cagney's best film and worth reviewing, one of the best American movies of the 1930s. Also, I would suggest White Heat (1949), where he says his famous line, 'Look Ma, top of the world!' and although not as good a film as The Roaring Twenties, is probably his best performance. Fyi, Orson Welles thought Cagney was the best of them all!
Kubrick worshipped Cagney also...

It baffles me that they don’t get roles in higher profile films.
I don't know if he could be considered underrated, but he's another great chameleon of an actor, and that's Johnny Depp. He was nominated for three Oscars but never won one. In my opinion, he should've won an Oscar for his role as JM Barrie (the creator of Peter Pan) in Finding Neverland. I can tell that Johnny studied and prepared for that role. He does the Scottish accent so well in that film. I love how he always has a knack for taking the weird and bizarre roles (because of Tim Burton) and then turns around and disappears into serious and sometimes frightening roles in What's Eating Gilbert Grape, Blow, The Libertine, Secret Window, Finding Neverland, etc. To me, his acting range and versatility are amazing. Heath Ledger and Kathy Bates are 2 other acting chameleons that come to mind.

Robert Pattinson always seems to disappear into his roles in a way that reminds me of the talent of Gary Oldman. And no I haven't seen any of the Twilight movies lol.
Sam Rockwell just nails it in everything I've seen him in also.
Nic Cage isn't an underrated actor, with his range and charisma he's just simply one of the greatest actors ever.

When you described James Cagney I thought of Ryan Gosling. I think he’s great and something about him just gives me the creeps in the best possible way. He just can explode at any minute and it’s amazing. Nicholas Cage is great especially in Bringing out the dead.
I was just thinking the other day that John C Reilly deserves more credit. Especially for his performance in Magnolia. He’s fantastic in Hard Eight and Boogie Nights but his work in Magnolia is just next level
Jonah Hill is one that comes to mind honestly. I think out of the comedians turned dramatic actors he’s one of the best. He can be completely goofy and over the top in comedies but in dramatic roles he’s a completely different person being completely laid back and down to earth. He can act circles around anyone.
Cagney's fearlessly physical style is often called " over the top" but his movement was always lyrical. " my, how he projected...but he was as focused as a laser beam. Unreal, but true...the highest form of theatricality " -said Orson Welles. By contrast, the soulful, poetic stillness that Robert Mitchum brought to his roles was at one time thought to be him "sleepwalking" through his parts! Cagney's expressionistic vibrancy & Mitchum's breezy cool are sorely missed in this era. Thelma Ritter, John Cazale, Robert Duvall are among actors who always delivered flawlessly in less showy parts.

Orlando Bloom is soooo underrated! Some people think he is an absolutely atrocious actor but he is actually only really, really bad!
Mark Duplass is so underrated.
Always love the Toni Collette love, and was happy to hear you mention Knives Out. She is vastly underrated as an actress, period, but also especially for her comedic work. Muriel's Wedding is an iconic performance, and she also killed on the cancelled WAY too early series United States of Tara. There's also The Hours, which is a film really dislike, but she shows up for one five minute scene as this almost comedically perfect housewife neighbor who accidentally seduces Julianne Moore, stealing pretty much the entire film for me.
Nicholas Cage is a mad genius. He needs to make another film with Werner Herzog. _Bad Lieutenant - Port of Call New Orleans_ was a thing of demented beauty. Lizards, Vicodin, and break dancing dead guys. I'm totally there.

I missed this tweet. 😔 I would’ve put Theo Rossi because he’s the perfect amount of cheesy and serious. He can do certain roles to perfection, like his role in Luke Cage.
I would have to say Liam Neeson. He might be in his early 70s, but I think a lot of us are going to miss him when he’s gone. He’s given me some outstanding performances in Schindler‘s List, Taken, Marlowe and my personal favorite: A Walk Among the Tombstones.
