      @@lukaszkoczen my guess is you’re going to have to splice your turn signal wiring from the harness to your turn signal wire in the light. It might work, it might not. To me it sounds like it may not be compatible but give it a shot and see if it works

    Scott thank you for the quick reply I'm going to head over today to check it out again. So if I go with the black lead off meter to black wire. Then red lead off meter to blue wire I should see 12volts. And then leaving black wire grounded to meter and read brake light red/yell I should see 12 volts when brake pedal is compressed. Does that sound correct thanks for your help trying to getting him up and running for an event.

    • @scottballz6284
      @scottballz6284  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nick Panhead yes that is correct. If you’re getting no reading again, I would start by checking the ground wire itself, since you have already checked the fuses.

  • @nickpanhead7209
    @nickpanhead7209 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Scott question about those three wires red/yell blue and black if you plug that back into your harness and put a meter or a test light shouldn't I get power to one of those wires. Key off I get nothing. Key on accessories I get nothing. Key on to start I get nothing. I'm trying to figure problem on my nephews 98 super glide. Wires under fender got frade from rubbing. So now he has no brake running light or headlight. But has a brake light. When you step on pedal. Shouldn't anyone of those 3 wires have power when key is in any two power positions. He has after market tail light on fender mite be a Harley. But only has two wires coming out black and red. All 4 fuses are good ignition is good. Not sure what problem may be. I wanted him to trace back from bottom of connector to see where each of those three wires go to. Scratching my head here don't know why he has no headlight or running tail light. Thank you Nick

    • @scottballz6284
      @scottballz6284  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nick Panhead yes, you should be getting power to those wires but also remember that you will need to ground it, in order to get a reading.

    Can you run 3 running brake light wire into the 1 main wire?

  • @garyohanlon2111

    Hey man great video.
    Have an 01 sportster took off a cat eye break light and wanted to replace it with a side mount. Cat eye only has 2 wires side mount has 4. Wires don't seem to carry enough juice. Any thoughts

    • @scottballz6284
      @scottballz6284  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gary Ohanlon did the cat eye you had before have brake and running? I’m confused how it would only have 2 wires if it had both

    • @scottballz6284
      @scottballz6284  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gary Ohanlon as far as the 4 wires go, my guess would be that that light probably can be used in a different application other than a side mount for a bike. It may also be used for something like a trailer light where they would be used in a pair. So for example, let’s say the 4 wires are black, red, green, and yellow.
      Black would be ground
      Red running
      Green brake and left turn signal
      Yellow brake and right turn signal
      So for the application on a motorcycle you would spice the green and yellow together and attach it to the brake wire on your harness. So it would essentially become a 3 wire set up. Hope this makes sense

    thanks for the info it helps but i was wondering if youd happen to know what wires i needed to make sure are connected. from the front handle all the way back? my brother has the same bike and the guy he got it from did a piss poor job of bobbering it out and ruined most of the wiring so im trying to re wire it and im workig on the brake lights but not getting anywhere.

    • @scottballz6284
      @scottballz6284  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Josh Shirley I actually just made a video replacing the brake switch on my 08 fat bob. It shows the wires coming from the brake switch down your handle bars which will then connect to the harness in your frame back to the harness under your seat. I’m not sure if the colors are all the same but that’s where you need to start in order to break it all down. Good luck man, wiring is always a bitch 🤷🏻‍♂️

    • @joshcrossman18
      @joshcrossman18 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@scottballz6284 thanks man I really appreciate it. It is definitely a bitch lol. I just watched your video. It does look like they are the same colors but my main problem is it's after market handle bar controls and colors are different from the oe. And for some reason inside the acter market harness for the controls one wire from the handlebar controls is spliced in to one wire to the ignition button. Was that way from the factory.

    • @scottballz6284
      @scottballz6284  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Josh Shirley if it’s spliced into an ignition wire I would assume it must be a ground wire.

    • @scottballz6284
      @scottballz6284  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Pull your brake lever from the handle bars and push the switch in manually. See if you get any action there first. A lot of times your lever isn’t making contact with the switch. That’s the easiest place to start before you get the multi meter out and start tracing everything back, which is zero fun 😒

    • @petewylde4985
      @petewylde4985 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@scottballz6284 it worked! Only with the front brake, still nothing with the rear though.

    • @scottballz6284
      @scottballz6284  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@petewylde4985 ok good, so your front brake switch is the problem. Now hold in your brake switch in the front and press the rear brake pedal and see if you get anything. If not, that rear brake is most likely shot. I actually have a video of replacing the front brake switch on my channel also. It’s pretty simple really, just a few little things inside the housing you need to take note of. If the little nipple on the switch isn’t worn out like mine was then you may not even have to replace it. You may just have to realign your brake lever.

    • @scottballz6284
      @scottballz6284  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nick Panhead it sounds to me like the harness itself may be the problem. Try taking the brake running light and attaching it directly to the battery, if it lights up it’s most likely the harness itself

Running into this issue myself right now. 97 wg..just put a slightly wider tire and lowered the rear end..chewing up wires now.. is there an alternative route to run these wires if you want to keep your turn signals. • @mikedraper138
      @mikedraper138 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Plenty of rigid frames (no suspension at all) have side mount tail and turn signs mounted without any problems. As long as the wiring is soldered, heat shrinked and properly secured, bumps and movement swing arm or rigid, it should last the life of the bike.

    • @georgerugamas8669
      @georgerugamas8669 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      On the circuit breaker on my 97 sportster 1200 c there's two blue wires on the light fuse that leads to the blinkers and headlight switch. The other blue wire in the manuel says it goes to the taillight, but I don't know where to connect it to, it's a running wire right

    • @scottballz6284
      @scottballz6284  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +George Rugamas if it is the same wire I showed in the video, under the seat, then yes it is a running light wire. It will be part of the harness that runs from your brake light and turn signals, through your fender, and into the compartment under your seat then clips into the main harness.

    • @georgerugamas8669
      @georgerugamas8669 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      well here's the problem bro the taillight wires are Red,Green and White ,I don't know how to wire them I looked up online nothing,I wish I could send a picture my harness is a mess ,there no clips straight wire to wire,all this cause I couldn't figure out why my head light went out

    • @scottballz6284
      @scottballz6284  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      So you're saying that you're tail light wires are red, green, and white and don't end up clipping into anything under the seat?

    • @scottballz6284

      mark us that 2 wire system is whacky on some cat eyes, I just don’t think it’s compatible with this harness on its own. You can probably go in and re wire the light, if you want but You’re better off getting a 3 wire light that’s set up for this particular application.

    • @teninchrichard4016
      @teninchrichard4016 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Scott Ballz yeah I relocated the ignition switch over to the bottom bolt of the battery tray then ran a ground to where the rear foot peg used to be started the bike and the rear brake line that runs along the swing arm melted. The ignition mount was touching the rear brake light switch mount I don't know what the hell happened, I'm gonna find a 3 wire though
