As an ex junkie myself, this alb resonates with me on another level. Sigh. Then again, so does TOOL and Puscifer. Puscifer is next level under heard...if there was such a thing.

Those last few lines and the emotion he puts into it always gives me chills. "If you chose to pull the trigger, should your drama prove sincere, do it somewhere far away from here". It's a very polite way of telling someone to fuck off and never come back, but he sings in such a devastating way that it's no longer as polite as it reads.

Since this entire album is about aspects of drug/substance abuse, I always had the notion that this was from the perspective of someone who is enraged and confused at a loved one who is completely trashing their life and killing themselves because of their addiction. "Disconnect and self destruct one bullet (pill, hit, shot) at a time. What's your rush now? Everyone will have his day to die."

I love the last line...because ya get some people that are threatening suicide but its only a cry for help...then there are others that are seeking attention & ya just get tired of it. I am a 2-time combat veteran w/ the 82nd Airborne Infantry & have lost fellow soldiers & platoon mates that are my brothers to suicide, even yrs & yrs after our tours...& it has crushed me & taken its toll. I don't take it lightly. And we all dwell on could we have done anything? The answer is NO. Because the ones who are gonna do it don't cry for help or look for attention. They'll never say a word regarding it, everyone thinks they're doing well from their outward appearances.....& then early morning on Thanksgiving or some shit I start getting the calls, "So & So's wife woke up & found'em hangin' from the damn ceiling fan." That one really took another piece of me. But in the last line, it's like being tired of the threats. Just STFU already or get help(I'll help you & I'll help you find some help) or go & do it. "If you choose to pull the trigger; Should your drama prove sincere; Do it somewhere far away from here!!!"

I agree with you. I feel like this song is about drug addiction though. The whole album is I think. Hence 13th step.

    • @chrismule1062
      @chrismule1062 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

The entire album is absolutely about drugs/addiction/relapse/recovery/etc. Is it bad that I realized that the first time I listened when i bought 13th Step? LOL.
The Package cracks me up. To me, its about the dealer being somewhat lonely & trying to just converse w/ a "client" for a few. And the addict just wants to bounce outta there immediately & get high. Like, dude, we ain't friends. You're my guy. That's it. You gonna be there when I need to talk? NOPE!!! It's gonna be, "What'chu need?" But ya don't wanna be rude & lose this connection, so you're smiling, nodding, agreeing & occasionally saying things like, "oh yeah...huh...ya don't say...nooo...really...get outta town." LMAO.

this song is like you said, from the perspective of the person talking to the suicidal, but looking into the lyrics you notice that this person is very condescending and not empathetic towards the suicidal, calling them a "drama queen" etc. the person is the outsider, who maynard is criticizing for their lack of empathy.

I just heard this song for the first time a week ago, and can confidently say it's one of the best songs I've ever heard. Not only does it sound perfect to my ears on all spectrums, but I couldn't relate more to the lyrics. Two of my best friends (and most people I knew in high school to some extent) went down the road of Xans and RCs back starting around 2013, obviously with depression relevant as it usually is with drugs like this, shitty drugs people sell for a slight profit but also do themselves, and they almost killed themselves in my own presence (both involving being KOd on their back while puking ((one at my HS graduation bonfire one on a random day))); on multiple occasions even. Even as great friends there was nothing I can do to make them feel like life is worth living if you get down to it.
But, the reason why I feel I could use a therapist in life is because I think my Mom is the same way. She lost her father due to liver cancer when she was 19 in 1988, her fantastic sister died of cancer in July 2021 after being diagnosed in December 2020 (we had a friend play stairway to heaven acoustic fingerstyle for her in hospice and I can no longer listen to led zep, it was her favorite band and she loved music), her wonderful brother is currently having heart problems at an age where he still needs to work, and her beautiful mother has come down with complete dementia to go along with heart problems in the year 2021: in the past year she sometimes doesn't recognize who my mom; her own daughter, is, much less me. We drove her back to Illinois from her home in south Carolina last week to be closer to family and live in assisted living. She hates it and is very confused with what is going on My mother also had her gallbladder explode 12 years ago when I was 12 followed by her spleen exploding when I was 13, 11 years ago. On top of this her chronic pain from slipped disks and arthritis. She is one of the nicest, strongest people I know and In no way does she deserve this suffering.
This is the main reason I no longer believe in god after being raised a Catholic and question my mother whenever she prays as her life has been so tragic it makes even me cry nearly every day. I wish I could comfort her.
I had to get this off my chest I really really need a therapist
On top of all this the biggest thing I feel is that I can apply the song to myself. Yes, my life has had extreme difficulties that have broken me down, but so does almost everyone else's, and millions have had it worse, so why would I be a depressed bitch killing myself every day by hating my life and not progressing myself as I should due to distractions and complications that most people experience, and let it defeat me rather than help me grow as a person. Basically when I hear him speaking the chorus I an feel it as being me talking to myself in a way that is motivating.
I want nothing more than to be successful as soon as I can to get my mother, who is on disability but doing jobs as she can, and my father who is sacrificing and supporting the family to the best of his ability, retired. I ditched social life, worked hard, and got a structural engineering degree from UIUC in 2020 and am extremely excited to finally succeed, but am stuck at a point where I cannot find a job in my field but work 50+ hours a week at an interim job to help support us making it almost impossible to keep studied up on what I learned in University. I'm scared, broken, and determined, and am doing everything in my power to keep motivated to have determination come out on top.

🦋 What a Great choice for Today's reaction.🎶 Love this song.🎶 You guys are right. That is why I love Music so much!
To have an Eclectic taste in all Genre is the best. Your subjected to a wide spectrum of music. And with Maynard his Diversity is His best Gift. He can Simply do anything he sets his mind to do. I love listening to a Mix of all 3 of his bands.😏I Can't go very long without a Maynard music day!!! Rose, Magdalena, Pet, Rev 22:20, Maynard's cover of Elton Johns Rocket Man, his cover of Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody & John Lennon's Imagine are Top on my list of absolute favorites. And You Have not Reacted to yet. I'm Looking Forward to Those Future Uploads Guys! 🙌🎶🤘🤘 BTW The Outsiders was an Awesome movie Smokey. An absolute Leonardo, Pacso or whomever u think is/were actually "true" artists of any time period...hes in that category, as a mater of fact, he IS his only category and their is nobody that can touch him, not the greatest vocalist but a TRUE artists (beyond the music) that can expand his vocal ability and truly shows you what his range is on every album. And not only is he the lead singer of TOOL, but he's also in 2 others bands...not to mention the wine, his art work, MMA, farm, farm animals, etc. etc. etc...I believe we are so blessed to be alive during his life to enjoy a TRUE artist at work during HIS life...we are told about how great of an artist Leo, Pacso and many more WERE, but we actually get to enjoy the greatest ever to live or at the least one of the greatest. Sorry for such a long reply, I'm truly a MJK fan and I do believe he is the greatest at whatever he put his hands on. He's not God nor A God. And no, I'm not obsessed with him...I'm a red-blooded, hard working, love his wife and kids kinda guy, that's also a musician, and I can "see" the complexity of his music...so this is my humble opinion about MJK. Thanks

Great reaction, guys! This song is a great representation of the strengths of APC. It's got the vibe, the chill parts, the chunky parts, and of course Maynard's incredible vocals.
Here's the deal: The whole 13th Step album is incredible. It's a concept album, and I believe it's best experienced in one continuous listen, start to finish. From the opening of "The Package" to the end of "Gravity", it takes you in a great journey. I know you guys don't do full album reactions, but when you are done reacting to the individual songs, you HAVE to experience the album front to back. It will only deepen your respect for Maynard's artistry, as well as the genius of Billy Howerdel. Maynard is the focal point but it's definitely Billy's band.
Much love from your Tennessee neighbor. Deuces!! ✌️

Saw APC live mid 2000’s, they played The Outsider and Maynard held the line “over thiiiiiiiis!” for at least 30 seconds, the crowd went fucking bonkers, it was an amazing display of his voice

    APC - Thomas
Probably the least popular song, but it's in my personal top 5 APC songs. I've got a thing for the first album though. Probably because the 2000/01 Concert tour was the best concert for sound quality I think i've ever seen. EMU convocation center, perfect size venue. The old girl bassist Paz came out playing Violin solo on on I think an extended version of Reinholder as the band faded in lights and sound.

The Humbling River is a Puscifer song. Tool: vocalist Maynard James Keenan, guitarist Adam Jones, drummer Danny Carey, and bassist Justin Chancellor. A Perfect Circle: vocalist Maynard James Keenan, lead guitarist Billy Howerdel, guitarist Van Leeuwen, bassist Paz Lenchantin, drummer Josh Freese. Others have played with A Perfect Circle: Primus drummer Tim Alexander had briefly stood in as a drummer prior to Freese in the band's initial live shows; however, this was prior to releasing any material. Band collaborator and producer Danny Lohner and Marilyn Manson bassist Jeordie White were also members for a short period in the early 2000s. The band's current lineup features Smashing Pumpkins guitarist James Iha, bassist Matt McJunkins, and drummer Jeff Friedl. Puscifer: vocalist Maynard James Keenan, Carina Round singer, and guitarist Mat Mitchell. Only three permanent members.

Guys...maybe you have been told this before, but if not you NEED to know that the 13th Step is a "theme" album. The "theme" is RECOVERY / ADDICTION and each song is written from a different perspective. Either from the addict, the drug itself, the loved one, ect. Also, in recovery the "13th Step" is referring to fucking someone else in recovery....thaught youd like this info....carry on
