    "one bullet at a time" is the clue to this song - drug abuse being an eventual "self deletion" one shot/pill/hit at a time. Also, the album's title, "Thirteenth Step," is an expression people in 12 step programs use to describe the common occurrence of people dating other 12 steppers, despite doing so being very much discouraged. I absolutely love the last line of the lyrics - "Do it far away from here" - to me meaning, "Do what you want, but just not around me."

    Great track and another great reaction Polo. My understanding of this song is it was written about Layne Staley (Alice in Chains lead singer, monster voice, rock legend) and the addiction problems that eventually led to his death, but from the point of view of Layne's brother.. like the frustrated cry of a family member who can't do anything to help, but also doesn't understand the addiction that even Layne knew was killing him.
    Tragic on every level.

    • @mercychoke4475

    What I've taken from this song is> Individuals ignorance to suicide and people who have opened up about struggling with those thoughts. To then be judged for that struggle.

    • @neologian1783
      @neologian1783 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I had a different take on it. Yes, there's the suicidal element but for me it was about not being drawn in and devoured by people who are committed to chaos and their own self destruction. There are just some people who are not satisfied with you throwing them a life vest. They don't want "help".....what they actually want is for you to get out of the life boat and drown with them.......

      How is the last song on the album a song to tie songs together? And yes disgustipated is after this but just as an outro. I think he was just put off by that very long intro ( I was for years). • @josephhayes8855
    @josephhayes8855 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I can offer more insight as to the meaning of this.
    13th Step is an album based around spiritual recovery. "The Outsider" is a song from the perspective of the "victim". They don't understand what's wrong with the person, their help is repaid in pain, and they are over the endless helplessness presented by the offender.
    If you've ever cared about or attempted top help an addict, this song speaks true to that experience

    This album is one of the great 'concept' albums of recent times. It's thematic from the beginning....(I hate to copy and paste, but) the 13th Step is a term for when a 12-Step member hits on a group newcomer with less than a year of sobriety. It can be for a variety of reasons - emotional, financial, physical - but either way, it's someone in a position of power trying to take advantage of someone who is weaker. If you listen to the album with this in mind, it makes so much more sense. 😉 Y'all have to give Billy Howerdel his props too... It's his band and he really formed this amazing collection of talent

    This song was basically what not to say to someone who has "deleting" thoughts.

    I'm not sure if I am right or not, but the first time I listened to this album it was front to back on a long drive, and I believe it is a true compilation album, in sequence, of one story. I'll spare you my opinions on the story but if you just follow the lyrics, music mood, and personalities being presented from start to finish, it's a very clear story.
    For this reason it is one of my favorite albums. Not all tracks are personal faves but they all fit the story absolutely perfectly. It's brilliant.

    One of my favourite albums! ...though I can't listen to it too much or I start getting introspective and in a weird mood.

    Song is about Layne Staley singer from AIC. The fault line is the track marks. One bullet at a time refers to shooting up. If you like down songs I highly recommend you listen to Alice in Chains SAP album, in particular the song "AM I inside" Hauntingly beautiful.

    It's not a song about people who pretend to be suicidal at all.
    It's a song about the "outsider" being judgemental and inconsiderate to the plights of addiction, being unaware of, or refusing to acknowledge that an addiction cannot just be kicked for the convenience of the people outside looking in

    The live performance on Letterman is somehow even better.

    POLO -- would love to see you react to Deftones - Passenger. It's a collab with Chino and Maynard. Great song. It'll blow your socks off.
