How to Exit Roundabouts Safely in the UK

  • Leaving roundabouts when turning right can be challenging for new drivers. Often you need to change to the left lane to leave and if done late there may be a car in the way. In this video I give examples of how to leave roundabouts in the UK.

    I think good advice for learner drivers on roundabouts is to remember that you are in a CIRCLE. Don’t be afraid to miss your exit and go round again if you’re not confident the first time, yes you might feel silly but being safe is always better than taking risks.

      If you are in the left lane and miss your exit, should you stay in the left lane while going round again? Would you indicate right? Thanks

    • @cod_rasta3619
      @cod_rasta3619 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      @@katefreeman6798I think in that case you need to signal right and change to the right hand lane until you just pass the exit before the one you're taking, because you can't go all around the roundabout staying the the left hand lane

    • @J-sv9dp
      @J-sv9dp หลายเดือนก่อน

      I tried doing that: I signalled right to change lane on a large roundabout after realising I'd missed my exit and reaching a red traffic light. There was no other traffic in this section and, since I had already reached the stop line, I figured I'd better wait for the lights to change before moving across.
      The lights began to change for me just as the traffic waiting at the set of lights some distance behind me set off. Since I was already signalling (after dark and with no traffic around me to block the view from those approaching), I thought my intention was clear and set off into the next lane as the light turned green, ahead of the approaching vehicles, only to be honked at by the driver behind whose lane I'd just entered...
      I was trying to drive appropriately but the driver behind didn't seem to think that I had... Yet, if I'd waited for the approaching traffic to overtake me before moving out, I would have blocked everybody in my own lane from turning left before the lights changed again... Alternatively, I could have given up, signalled left and exited the roundabout... But that would have taken me onto the big scary motorway I was keen to avoid, alone, at night, with neither SatNav nor any sense of direction or location and already disorientated by the roundabout itself...
      Advice for future reference?
      Should I have waited for the approaching traffic on the right to overtake me, thereby blocking all the others turning left? Should I have cut my losses and exited onto the big scary motorway despite my disorientation? Should I have gone over the stop line at the red light in order to change lanes in advance while the road was still clear? Or should the approaching driver have noted my clear and unobstructed signal and simply let me out as he approached the changing lights?
      Thanks!

Also to add I failed first time so anyone who has, don’t beat yourself up. If your examiner thinks your ready then you are, I actually felt like I had a worse drive this time than the first but I still drove well and I had the test centre manager due to one the examiners being ill! Doesn’t help when other drivers don’t use their indicator though or their own position is off… I’m sure it’ll come to me with more practise though!

    Interesting point you bring up that the only criteria for a road to be a dual carriageway is the existence of a physical separator between the two opposing carriageways and that the number of lanes is irrelevent. You are absolutely correct of course. I had reason to reaserch this very topic some time ago and found the same answer. It was my sat nav that prompted me to dig into this topic deeper. Reason being, there is a short stretch of "dual carriageway" with just one lane in each direction on a NSL road near where I live. I noticed whenever I enter that stretch of "one lane dual carriageway", my sat nav shows a change in speed limit from 60 to 70 mph and then back down to 60 mph as I exit that short stretch of one lane dual carriageway and back onto the stretch that is genuinely single carriageway. Of course, I realise that sat nav speed limits can be incorrect / out of date and that actual road signs take precedence. However, in this case, further research as to the actual laws confirmed sat nav is indeed displaying the correct speed limit along this stretch, with no contradiction of signage. To be honest, I don't actually bother increasing to 70 mph and back to 60 mph, especially as there is a gap for turning vehicles and a staggered junction either side of this short stretch of dual carriageway.

One issue I sometimes find when wanting to slide over to the left one exit prior: Traffic ahead of me in my (right) lane either stopped or moving very slowly. This can often happen on a roundabout controlled by traffic lights but also on ones that don't have traffic lights. You might then say "Well just wait for the queued traffic ahead of you to start moving again and then slide over to the left". The problem is, if my lane on the right is backed up / stationary but the lane on my left that I want to drift over to is free flowing, then it can be a challange. Especially since that left lane is likely to have vehicles that joined the roundabout at a subsequent entry point to mine and have a relatively free run to the same exit that I want, whereas I am baulked. Sure, I will put my left indicator on to "ask" to be let in but no guarantees.

      That is a tricky situation to deal with. On the road sometimes it's not possible to go the way you want to go safely. There can be too many cars and sometimes other drivers are reluctant to help and don't want you in front of them. It's important not to stop in a free flowing lane and wait for someone to let you change into a lane with stationary traffic though.

    I passed my driving test Today with 4 minors in the first attempt and your videos helped me so much. Thanks for your instruction. I got one minor for not checking blindspot over my shoulders while changing lanes in dual carriage way at 30 speed limit area. I was not aware of this one at all. May be you can talk about this in your next video. Thanks again for your videos, they are very useful.

    6:42 this situation is a bit tricky. In my country, there's still a good amount of people that do the roundabout on the outer lane, even if they are leaving in the last one. So some times my exit is coming up and I need to change to the outer lane, but there is a car there. No biggie, the exit has two lanes, we both fit. But then I have to pray that they will leave in the same exit as I will.

    • @quinnobi42
      @quinnobi42 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I lived in Spain for a while, and apparently the driving instructors there teach students to stay in the outer lane no matter what exit they take, which annoys all of the tourists from other countries that actually use the inner lane of the roundabout.

    Hi, I passed my test in December - your roundabout videos have been an absolute godsend! I still find myself watching your videos, trying to learn more!
    A topic I'd love for yo to cover is what to do when there are unsafe drivers around you. I was about to exit a roundabout, changing lanes to exit. I checked my mirror, and I saw a car, but I assumed that they would adjust their speed since I had been indicating to a while. The driver started beeping at me as I was changing, and I feel a bit at fault, but on the other hand, you're not supposed to undertake? Scenarios like this is something that hasn't been covered much whilst i was learning to drive, so I'd love to hear some more about that :)

    Hi Richard, nice video. I got my driving license in Italy many years ago. I am now living in Colchester and I noticed that how to drive on roundabouts in UK and Italy are different. I am not talking about driving left or right. In Italy all the roundabouts can be entered on the external line. If you are in the internal you need to switch lane, giving the priority, before exiting. This makes the roundabouts safe to approach as they are all the same. On the other hand it create more traffic as people will prioritise the external lane, not using the others. In UK the approach to the roundabouts prioritise the traffic flow but then the driver has to analyse the roundabout before approaching. This situation is good where the road sign and visibility are good but if some of the road signs are fading it makes more difficult for new drivers.

    I failed my test in April because I didn't shoulder check when exiting on the 3rd exit if there was a car nex to me(event though there wasnt any as I had checked my mirrors. But anyhow, now I shoulder-check even if I don't need to. I must say I never knew that, as my instructor never told me, besides the ususal, center mirro side mirrors, signal....I learnt it on the test. But now I'm soo ready to take the test.

    • @ConquerDriving
      @ConquerDriving  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm sorry to hear that, left should check before leaving a roundabout is not a normal thing to do unless you feel the shape of the lane and the distance you need to move left means someone could be hiding in your blind spot. Good luck with your next test.

    In the beginning of my "driving career" I had to cope with a 3-lane roundabout similar to British rbs and the lane change from second lane to the outmost lane was so terribly scary to me that I left my seat a bit to watch the right (Germany) blind spot😅...
