  • Road markings are important, in fact, they are vital. There are four types of road markings. Firstly, we have the markings which run across the road. Secondly, the have the road marking that is in the middle of the road, the road marking that is on the sides of the roads. Finally, we have road markings that help us to position correctly and control traffic.
    Road marking which runs across the road is, "gives way lines" and stop lines. In the center of the road, we have lane lines, hazard lines, and no-overtaking lines. On the side of the road, we have the yellow no-parking lines, cycles lines, etc

      I swear there not there to teach you that? i think you learn all that in the high way code. you should learn all that before you do your theory and before your lessons. i mean it will save you time and money then the instructors telling you all the ins and outs of the road markings and what every sign means.

    I'm a driving instructor in Barbados. In regards to the amber light, I teach my students that once the light changes to amber just as they are going thru, they must continue, but if in approach meters away and it changes, prepare to slowdown, enough to get in their hands signals, and bring the vehicle to Crawl before a nice smooth stop. Hand signal when they've stopped and just before the point of moving off again.

    Great video. Something to add re solid white centre lines. It is an offence to park opposite them. Surprising how many people don’t know that.

  • @keith6400
    @keith6400 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    In the technical sense solid lines along the carriageway do not prohibit overtaking. The rule is where the solid line is on your side you must not cross it. It should be noted that these are often not painted down the centre of the road and used by traffic authorities in hilly country on two way roads which have three lanes and painted to segregate the road into two and one lane with different rules for each side. In this type of situation the authorities are trying to manage overtaking heavy lorries which slow to a crawl on steep hills. Where they are painted along the centre of a two way road cars will not be able to overtake each other without crossing the solid line their side however a moped driver could quite legitimately be overtaken safely and legally by a motorcyclist on a powerful bike without crossing the white line. There are a number of legal exceptions to the basic rule and parking is prohibited where any double white lines exist. Driving test examiners tend to talk about road markings along the carriageway not down the middle of the road because it is only then that a candidate's understanding can be examined properly.

    From the States so I found this very interesting, particularly that you use white lines to separate traffic going opposite directions. Here in the States the color of the line tells you the direction of the traffic on the other side of the line. If the line is white then the traffic on the other side of the line is going the same direction as you. If it's yellow then it's going the opposite way as you. Therefore we can have multiple lanes in each direction and the lanes going the same direction will be white lines whereas the lines in the middle separating the the opposing lanes of traffic will be yellow. A "turn lane", which seems to be your chevrons will be bounded by two yellow lines on each side - the outermost being a solid yellow line and the innermost being a dashed yellow line. If you used yellow to demarcate lanes who's direction is opposite than yours then I think I'd like your markings better because you have markings we don't such as the give way to both directions, give way to same direction only, the clear boxes, and so forth. We don't have any of that.

    An excellent way to put across important information. SImply reciting what the signs and markings mean is not very stimulating. This video places the signs and markings in the proper context.

    I’ve been driving for 21 years and I am now setting my C1 ambulance test. I failed the first try because I got in trouble for speeding (ironic) and not properly entering a yellow box junction when waiting to turn right. This was very helpful and I’m hopeful that I’ll pass next time!

    One thing though. I thought one yellow line means no parking but can stop to load/unload.
    Double yellow mean no stopping at all.

    Thank you so much. I'm Australian and intending to hire a vehicle on my next UK visit. I've driven there once before and I wasn't prepared and it wasn't fun! While our road signs are very similar, the road line markings are quite different. I now understand what they all mean so I'm feeling much better about it. Much appreciated.
