What helped me on my test was pretending the Examiner was just a guy who needed a lift who wanted to go a specific route. It sounds weird but it made me calmer for some reason. I listened and did all my box ticking for the test but he was actually good to talk to. Test was over quick and only 4 minors.

What are the minors? Is emerging or approaching mistake a minor or serious?

    • @rufusgreenleaf2466
      @rufusgreenleaf2466 ปีที่แล้ว +55

@@sportsandtravelling7619 What were my 4 minors?
      - Control when moving off (because i stalled)
      - Approach Speed at Junctions (I got to the end of the junction a little too fast)
      - Observation at Junctions (Same junction, i were a little too fast so i didn't observe in time. Although i did observe and were safe otherwise it would have been a serious)
      - Positioning (Single road split back into two lanes but i noticed a little late, almost drove over the white line in the middle of them)
Basically the minors i got were what even experienced drivers do on a daily basis.

    • @rufusgreenleaf2466
      @rufusgreenleaf2466 ปีที่แล้ว +6

@@sportsandtravelling7619 Also to your second question, it depends on how much of a danger you are when you make that mistake.

I failed my first attempt by also ending in the opposite lane. My teacher was quite perplexed cause we've driven that particular road many times. We even drove there an hour before. It was a case of my mind doing a hiccup.
My teacher was cool about it. On our way from the test he let me drive, and we took the same route again, so as to get the bad experience out of the system and replace it with a good one.
Now it's just a fun story I can tell.
Don't beat yourself over the head with it. Carry on and laugh at it later.

Had my driving test today and passed first time with 2 minors. I’m honestly riddled with severe anxiety. Had around 3/4 hours of sleep last night, throw up twice and couldn’t even eat anything properly. I had less than half a banana and 2 paracetamol (recommend this btw! But actually have the whole banana 💀) I was certain I wouldn’t pass, but I did. Trust me, if I can do it, you can too! I know you might feel like you can’t or you’re not ready but if your instructor has said you are, then you are. I promise, it’s not as hard or as daunting as you think. If you have your test coming up, I promise you’ll be okay! Pass or fail, you can always redo it. It’s not a ‘be all and end all’ situation. You’ve got this. Believe in yourself, it makes a difference. Best of luck!! ❤️

I am a 66 year old woman who moved to the UK 1 year ago from the USA. For those you feeling anxious, let me assure you that I have been driving for 50 years and even I am nervous about my test in 3 weeks because driving here is completely different than what I am used in the states, and due to all the roundabouts, spiral roundabouts, road markings instead of signs, etc. I feel like it is way more difficult to drive here.
That being said, I just tell myself to treat the test as an opportunity to learn what I still need to practice and that if I pass, great, if not, try again.
The one thing I miss the most about living here is my independence and not being able to just get in the car by myself. It is really important to me and I know I will achieve that eventually. Watching these videos is so helpful to me and I appreciate them and thank you for the great instructions and insight you provide. Wishing everyone the best in your driving tests!

Your advice to not go into the test TRYING NOT TO FAIL was so very helpful. This was the very issue I had. I didn’t want to make ANY mistakes, not even one. This caused me to be so anxious and overthink every maneuver I make. So, on the day of my exam I exactly did what you said. It helped my calm my nerves. And guess what? I passed without any mistakes! Yeah... You will ALWAYS make at least one mistake on a test. I think it's a very rare thing for someone to pass with zero minors. So the best thing is to simply accept that you're Human, like the rest of us, and accept that you will make mistakes. BUT... The trick is to make sure that they're not serious ones. And that, if you know you've just made a mistake, don't let it effect you! Because what you might consider serious, the examiner... So long as they feel safe, might just put it down as a minor!

So grateful this channel is free too!

Hi! I've been watching a lot of your videos on the run up to my test and they've all been really helpful, especially this one as I felt really nervous about taking my test! I took my test this morning and passed first time with zero faults, and I'm sure your videos were a major reason that I passed so I just wanted to say a big thank you! After my initial nerves, my driving this morning actually felt really natural and in a strange way I sort of enjoyed it!
To those taking their test soon, remember that you don't have to be perfect, as long as you are safe and legal then you are more than likely to pass. My best piece of advice is to trust your instincts, take it steady and if you're not sure about something slow down or even stop. In another of this channel's videos, he said to remind yourself that you are a chauffeur, not a taxi - try to be as smooth as possible even if it means you're not the fastest. So if you can, try and get a bit of driving in before the test, take a few deep breaths before you begin and just focus on being safe, even if it means you have to wait an extra five minutes at a busy junction! Good luck to those taking their tests in the future, you can do it!😊

Richard, your channel has been SO helpful. I just an hour ago passed my test first time, with 1 minor, and I couldn't be more chuffed. This morning I was sick with anxiety - I couldn't eat, couldn't focus, felt like I was going to vomit, but watching this video plus others on your channel really settled my nerves. I was in the position of it being important for me to pass as my partner is heavily pregnant, and the pandemic plus test scarcesness has meant severe delays in me getting a chance to take my test, so I was worried it might be another 6 month delay if I failed. I was also taking the test in my own car, which meant I didn't have an instructor to help calm me before the test, but you filled that role perfectly virtually!

Tips in this video are absolutely solid. I personally only had a little sort of mild feel of anxiety on my warm up drive plus me and my instructor have been pulled over by the police on the day of my test :D (just a regular check thing tho).
My experience (disclaimer - this is is not a tip) : When it came to a start of my test I just switched off myself in terms of nerves or thinking too much in the way that I just drove the best I could with an approach that I don't want to repeat this thing again. This is such a great video. My third test is coming up this week and I’m the same as you, got much more anxious as I wasn’t nervous at all on the first test, perfect drive but failed for something silly which I still argue should have been a minor fault💔 and second test my nerves totally took over and had a really tutty and judgy examiner. Hoping third times a charm, i don’t think anything can be as bad as my last test so can only go up from here!

I’m in a similar situation however my first test was awful, my second test I thought I had passed, as it was the smoothest drive I had ever done. Got back and it was a fail. Now I have my third coming up and I can’t stop worrying about failing. It’s the wait times for tests that make it hard for me!

I know sometimes you’re probably used to hearing “don’t be nervous” but it’s actually so true. Worrying about something before doing it makes you worry about it two times: 1. Anxiety before doing it and 2. Anxiety while doing it. I was so nervous for my drivers test, which you have to understand is a very normal thing, you are not alone. When i started driving my anxiety completely left me because i was too focused on the road and i ended up passing the test. You will do great, just make sure to eat a good meal and take deep breaths. You got this!!

You’re not a failure for not passing. A lot of people don’t, and that’s perfectly okay. It doesn’t mean you’re bad at driving in any way. Just make sure to get a good nights sleep before your test, I’d highly recommend having a banana and paracetamol and just stay calm. It’s easier said than done but trust me, if you believe in yourself, it makes a difference! Talk to your instructor before your test and they’ll give you some advice and reassurance as you’re not the only one to feel nervous. I promise, you’ll be okay! Don’t put pressure on yourself to pass. If you do, amazing! If not, it’s okay. You can do it again. Best of luck! ☺️

The pressure thing reminds me of when I took the test for driving a lorry. Had to pass the test that exact day, the next day some EU legislation would be ratified and I'd have to go through an extra curriculum to work as a lorry driver, which I had to pay for myself. Several grand, most likely. I failed in under 1 minute. I almost drove out in front of another truck when exiting the parking lot the test started on. The examiner had to intervene. Utter failure. I didn't drive very well thereafter either. Luckily he agreed to give me another chance and take a subsequent test directly after, which I passed. Such a clutch moment.

Thank you so much for this video. I've just passed my test and to anyone reading, I'd honestly put off watching this video because I thought I'd be fine but I was a bag of nerves on my mock test and made so many mistakes, which I really didn't need the night before. So I decided to watch, it was so easing and refreshing I cannot thank you enough for sharing it with us. I really took to heart what you said about just drive and don't think about the result. There was a few times I thought I'd failed, I could practically hear my instructor questioning me, but if you just push on forget about that and just focus on driving in the moment its so much more relaxing. Safe to say these videos have been essential viewing!

Super interesting to hear your story. I passed first time with 2 minors. I was annoyed, I had planned to get 0 minors. Whilst I was learning, my instructor kept saying I was ready for the test, but I didn't book it until I was confident I would pass and pass well. I also knew that passing would mean no more driving for a while because I couldn't afford insurance, so I wanted to keep taking lessons. I'm glad I took this approach because I definitely got a lot more knowledge from my instructor than if I had passed sooner and stopped lessons. I always planned to do the Pass Plus, but never got round to it and TH-cam driving instructors kinda filled the gap!

Two days ago I thanked you for your videos helping me to pass my test but I didn’t mention that I failed twice before I passed third time around for the exact reason you mentioned there, nerves , passing my first two tests at the time and getting a license was a major key to my day today life, failing seemed like not an option. The intense pressure created nerves on both days that I did things during the failed tests that I haven’t done before with my instructor or in my driving ie driving on the wrong side of the road , stalling on a turn left junction and at one point my clutch foot was shaking so badly because I was scared of stalling the car or rolling back wards in a car that had hill assist and added on gas for you . For my third test my wife told me it’s okay if you don’t get it this time and we worked out an alternative plan to our worries and she told me to focus on the driving not the pressures of our lives and it was the best drive I have driven with an examiner in the car. Whoever is going for the test , just find a way to calm those nerves , trust me they get to you.

Your videos are very good and I have got my daugher to watch them. However she failed her driving test a while back after trying to be 'light' with the examiner. It had been raining off and on and she commented on how nice that the rain had stopped as it can make driving more awkward. His response - 'There is time yet'. Then he changed his mind on directions during the test adding to her stress. Sometimes they just don't go your way.
    Keep up the good work.

A few weeks ago, I was so nervous and anxious that I keep making mistakes, overthinking and my instructor made me park and talk about what I was thinking. I cried for ten minutes as my instructor wanted me to let it out. That cry out was so needed. Over the period of my next few lessons, I don’t know why but I was in my best independent driving. I no longer feel anxious. All I needed to do is let out all my fears. Now I understand that this is how I should feel when I drive, relaxed and chill. Weirdly to say this, I’m actually looking forward to my test.

Just to say thank you for your insight and empathy on this topic, as well as the attention to detail in all your videos. It was also a relief to hear a self confesed car-nut had failed a few times :D Learning in my early 40s, I had felt the pressure of learning to drive for about 25 years (a rocky start in my late teens plus my family paying for my brother's lessons but not mine did not help, then I just kept putting it off). Added to this, I now live in Spain, so one of the many hurdles the fact there would be THREE other people in the car during my exam (my instructor, the examiner and another candidate - yes you have to sit through each other's test!). Long story short, I passed first time!! It took me two days just to process that :D I will return to these videos again and again. To anyone else out there who struggling with lack of self-confidence , you can definitely do this!

Excellent advice. I passed yesterday and I was fine up until I turned the key and went to pull off. I was so nervous, I ignored the first two directions from the satnav - the examiner had to correct me and then I stalled on a hill.
At that point, he told me to relax, take time to recompose myself and go when ready. He made some small talk about holidays and plans for the day when he saw I had relaxed a bit and it totally put me at ease.
He only marked me down for one minor on my first stall, I assumed he would’ve given me 3 for ignoring the satnav’s first two instructions. I picked up 2 minors later on in the test but after that stall, he made me feel like I was just on a lesson with my instructor and said I did really well at the end.
I thanked him immensely for putting me at ease, if I had an examiner who was tutting at me, I think I would’ve been psyched out by it but I consider myself extremely lucky.
Fantastic tips here, especially about slowing your thinking down. I got total tunnel vision at the start, if I watched this beforehand, I probably would’ve snapped out of it after the first mistake and getting a hold of myself mentally. All the best to anyone doing their test soon, the examiner 100% wants you to pass.

@@blesskombo9260didn’t even know you had replied haha! I think they were lane discipline, Stopping moving traffic on a live lane and something else think it was my parking at the start of the test🤣 one year on and it doesn’t even feel real that i am driving!!

I'm a driving instructor as well, and a big part of how I prepare my students for a test is about the attitude and mental approach. It was nice to see you have similar approach, and I learned some new things I can use as well. Thank you.
Also, loved to see the ND. I have an NB myself and fully understand you wanted to use it as much as you could for driving shots, to make most of the day :)

That's right. It was a nice day so I thought I'd make the most of it.

So I watched this before mine and passed and it helped massively. I’d recommend and it can be unlikely with some examiners but if you can be chatty it reduces nerves but i understand this isn’t possible for everyone👍

I thought I’d be nervous but during the test my nerves went away and the nerves helped me be more concentrated and I did well
