  • So myself and Briony took our Audi R8 V8 Manual and Alpine A110S to Curborough sprint circuit for some fun on the OcUK track day.
I expected the Alpine A110S to be good and it did not disappoint, its ability to change direction is amazing but then again this car does only weigh 1100kg wet. I was also impressed that in track mode the car is a lot of fun and moves around in a very progressive and easy-to-control manner, In short, its handling dynamic is amazing, I rate it better than both my Lotus Exige 410 and Porsche Boxster Spyder (987). Alpine have made a truly fantastic car that is both fun and very capable on both road and track which also works perfectly as a daily driver.
The only modifications to the A110S are Carbotech XP8 brake pads and Motul RBF600 brake fluid and on this day the car was running on the smaller PS4 tyres, it has far more grip on the slightly wider Cup 2 tyres.
Onto the Audi R8 V8 4.2 Quattro, now this car was a surprise I was expecting it to feel lethargic and blunt as it probably weighs around 1600kg. The simple fact is the car was still hugely entertaining (sounds incredible with Top Gear exhaust) and actually very capable. The grip was superb but the Audi is fitted with slightly more grippy PS4S tyres in much wider sizes. The engine is magical it has sensational throttle response at any RPM and revs all the way to 8250rpm. The V8 on paper is not that quick, the V10 is much quicker but what makes the V8 so much fun is just that it feels so fast to drive yet you're never going that quick, for instance even in a straight line the Alpine A110S is just as quick due to less weight and DCT gearbox.
The Audi was better than I expected and I thoroughly enjoyed it, totally standard except for exhaust and it stops, goes and steers very well, Audi really did make a superb car with the R8 and if you enjoy driving then the V8 manual is all you ever need for fun on the road without too much fear of losing your license.
Though both cars were superb, the Alpine is my go-to track car simply because it is better suited for it. more reliable and far far cheaper to run on track due to its lack of weight. Watch my Donington video of the Alpine flying.
