Stunning spec 🙌🏻
The V8 isn't a supercar it's a TT for straight guys
ahhhhh this car is so damn Beautyful.
Thanks Gibbo for your videos I just took delivery of an identical spec car to yours in Adelaide SA One niggle with the settings - I can display Tyre Pressure on either side However, on car restart it does not remember that setup How about yours? Would appreciate any advice
Yeah same issue I’m afraid it seems to remember some of the stuff you do but others not so so I just configured each and then it’s just a matter of scrolling left to right
@@Gibbo205 Thanks for the reply. Hopefully a firmware update will solve this. All the best for your channel.
Nearly always a damper, springs rarely break.
Yeah though Porsche see quite a lot of snapped springs on these main thing all sorted now
@@Gibbo205 I've owned 20+ Porsche cars and never done a spring, I have done a strut top but that was due to hitting a rumble strip overly hard. Owned 5 cup cars as well, never done a spring in one of those. Anything driven hard should have the dampers rebuilt or replaced every so often.
there was a massive overreaction towards the interior. the new interior is more driver focused which is what real gr yaris drivers wanted, only real people complaining are those who are never going to buy or drive it anyway
Agreed!
Good to see you getting stuck in save a fortune if you do it yourself And it's very rewarding , I got fed up with wear sensors on my 987 either melting or coming off so taped them up , I see you have got a light weight battery fitted , yes you do need to retro fit sport crono pdk isn't that great without it god only knows why it wasn't fitted as standard , a set of sports headers and a remap will make it rev out so much better than standard headers which are so restrictive, the exhaust bore on the cayman R is bigger than the standard 987.2 off the top of my head it's 55mm over the 48mm standard so it mite be worth just putting headers on to start with .... 😂
Thank you, I prefer doing my own work on cars as I take my time and good care, it’s not just another job. Sports retrofit shall be done in new year so looking forward to that. :)
Step 1: Buy a Mk1 😉
I’ve owned both
The a110 looks bigger, chubbier, but has almost half of the size of an engine lol
Performance wise they are both pretty much identical
Nothing compares to the flat six BoxEngine’s organic sound at 8000 rpm, it is a driving instrument. The strong heritage of the Porsche brand will always be prioritised in my own subjective consideration. I do love the Alpine but I will always pick the Cayman R as collector’s keeper.
Can you finger it with more fingers now?
Oh yes ;)
@Gibbo205 lovely..great job giving it a wide on.
Thought it looked very low in the A110 vid.
Short gears are for rally cars, long gears are for track cars. The reality is the gearbox and engine in the Alpine aren't great, whereas the 3.4L NA is the Cayman is a peach and the gear box is world class - you are way off base here. Important and substantial differences. Alpine good concept poor execution. Any of the equivalent aged NA Caymans blow the doors of the Alpine e.g. 4L GTS, 718 GT4, 718 Spyder, Spyder RS and GT4 RS. You are comparing cars from almost different eras.
Short gears are more fun and make sense with cars that have 7 or 8 gears.
Short gears are for the road, longer gears are for the track and to making the 0 to 62 numbers look better. There is no excuse for long legs when there are 7 cogs, a high revving engine and extra weight.
@@user-xu5vl5th9n Porsche have always been long geared because their owners use them on track and enjoy them on both road and track. I'm not interested in short geared cars, they are crutch for turbo engines. The only people that complain about Porsche long gears are non-owners and non-track people. Long gears give you higher speeds if you don't like it don't buy a Porsche.
@@Gibbo205 No they don't on track and they don't if you have a good torque curve. Many Porsche owners track their cars, thats one of the reasons they buy them - long gears give you higher velocity per gear. Tracks can be broken down into slow - medium and fast, slow tracks are 2,3,4 gear dominant, medium are 3,4,5 dominant and fast are 4,5,6 dominant (crudely speaking). Look up short shifting as a driving technique particularly in a high revving Porsche with a broad torque curve. Porsche build quality engines the 3.4L used in the 987(.2) R (~330HP/ 370Nm) and 981 variants e.g. GTS (~340HP/ 380Nm) is an excellent engine and was used as the engine for the base 991.1 911 (~350HP/ 390Nm). There really isn't much comparison between a 3.4L NA engine mated with a PDK gear box (most willingly acknowledge this is best in class and was originally Le Mans derived) and a Renault 1.8T mated to an average DCT. The Alpine is a great experiment but it should have been finished with a decent engine and gear box, its the same mistake Lotus made.
I disagree having owned cars with long gears and short gears, GT3 vs 458 for example the 458 was more fun on track and a lot more fun on the road due to have much shorter gearing. With a DCT gearbox and 7 or 8 gears shorter gearing aids acceleration.
This has to be the most boring car video I’ve ever watched.
Thanks for watching and Merry Christmas :)
Thanks for the interesting comparison, gibbo. A small piece of advice: Porsche is pronounced Porsh-uh or Porsh-ee. Sporty regards from Germany. ✌
Thanks for the tips!
Just picked up my Gen 2. That LDA is an absolute pain in the ass. To switch it off completely, you have to switch it off every time you get in the car and start it up. I agree with you. A lot of this 'safety' tech is invasive and unnecessary, particularly in what is classed as a performance car, that attracts generally more aware and better drivers. Enough to make a person want to go back in time
Aesthetically, I think the Alpine is “interesting”, but the Cayman R is more classically timeless. The curves, subtle hints at a flying buttress, rear haunches, and overall look are 👌🏽!
The Cayman R is a classic the Alpine due to its compromised gearbox and engine isn't.
Another solid vid - you talked a lot about hydraulic steering but didn’t mention your McLaren? How does that and the other sports series cars compare?
McLaren steering is the best, they just seem to get it sport on and the sport series in my opinion have nicer steering over super series as sports series have very natural weighting and more feel, they are more akin to say a 996 GT3 steering or older Lotus so really good. 570S are amazing buys at moment!
Steering feel is key for me also, we seem in a minority now days. People who say other wise are deluded :-). NA wins over turbos also. Having ran conti 7, yes more feel, but I found they hated hitting standing water, I still would buy a PS4S for all round use. Conti nice as a fast road more sporty tyre, also slightly more noise and harsher ride with the conti. I am looking forward to the 5S sport.
Agreed but have to say I do prefer the Conti’s over PS4S the grip the Conti have in very cold wet conditions wipes floor with PS4S they also have more feel which I like so for me the ContiSport 7 will be my go too road tyre now prefer them over PS4S.
@ I think you might change you views, yours are brand new, also when your other half hits a puddle she will demand you swap them for PS4S because it will scare the life out of her, imo still the goto all year round tyre and will last twice as long. PS4s work till they are 1.6mm my conti were crap after not many miles in the wet. But yes as a fast summer tyre it is a better tyre if you are ok with the harder ride amd more road noise. I feel I can driver faster in the wet on a PS4S. Forget the tyre reviews.
@@Mrdfastcarswe were on motorway today in heavy rain and some deep flooded sections with under 5c temps and they seem to handle water fine. I tend to drive to conditions so if there is lots of standing water I drive under 70mph and slower and today the Conti’s had no issue but as I say I drive to conditions. I like my cars to give most feel and be fun and engaging, for this reason I won’t be fitting PS4S again as Conti is better
@@Mrdfastcars PS4S everyday of the week. Completely agree. PS4S are OEM for the current CGTS (N0).
@@Gibbo205 come back to me after 3 k miles :--) I won't be using coni 7's again I would say unless the car was going to see a few track laps also and I did not want to run cups or Ao52's. too many negatives for me over the PS4S.
Great review Gibbo and enjoyed very much. I’m a 997.2 owner and can agree with the hydraulic steering feel advantage 👍😁
Thanks! 👍
Fun fact in the Cayman R wikipedia page there is a image of the exact spec car. :D
Have a better look at the wheels. 😉
@ Looked the same to me.
Here 12 years late as i’m starting to build out the classic desktops I had in middleschool/highschool with all the ultra-nerd features I guess, in hindsight, I took for granted as I spec’d my gear (even though i loved and bragged about stuff like RAM load LED’s and POV display case fans that displayed messages and patterns to buddies that couldn’t have been less impressed). One of those huge “I wish they still made this now” specs is the Corsair XMS Pro DDR RAM that showed you realtime load/access on onboard LED’s. Never heard of the Ballistix Tracers doing similar until a couple months ago in my retro research, GOT SOME DDR2 DIMMs for a retro Windows 7 SLI build i’m running, and kinda sucks that they’re so underwhelmingly binary with the visual feedback. But wanna thank you from the future for videos like this, and wanna ask anyone viewing this from the future… is there anything out there on the planet, even SW-only apps for ARGB RAM nowadays, that run color patterns based on DIMM load? The industry did away with HDD and LAN activity LED’s, and RAM LED’s never even caught on. All of those things I’ve tried so hard to replicate on modern builds for years without sucking up CPU cycles on tray apps or wasting monitor space with ‘virtual’ activity lights. There’s gotta be some niche out there as passionate as me about real-time viewing of components under load in 2024
I agree. The color is fantastic
Thank you
In this video I talk about what I like and dislike about my Audi R8 Manual and how it is a truly daily driver supercar and such great fun to drive.
If you don’t drive it for the review it’s not a review
How do you think we got it home? It is a first impressions review from the 200 mile drive home, so clearly it was driven. ;)
@ really? Nahh Thought you towed it lol.
I'm not certain having Chrono will make the gear changes feel any different. I have it on my 718 GTS Boxster and all it does is keep the revs higher by changing when the shifts happen. TBH if you already have a Sport button (which I think is standard) its not working adding Chrono.
It makes a huge difference on a 987.2 PDK, you gain sport throttle mode, sport traction control (more slip) and higher rev limit. You also gain sports plus which marginally improves upshifts and adds inertia shifting, a kick and it enables launch control. :)
@@Gibbo205 Sorry - had forgotten that the R is basically a 987 not a 981.
Looks nice waiting for some Track videos then hehe.
That’s an incredible induction sound! Reminds me of the original M1 racer.
If it wasn’t for the cayman r the gt4 wouldn’t exist😊love the CR. Enjoy
Still weighing up what to buy - Cayman, TTRS, or Alpine 110 GT. All similar prices, all fantastic to drive, all smart looking. Only niggle for me with the Alpine is the interior quality. It's a long way behind the TT and the Cayman.
Biggest advantage of Alpine is how light weight it is which you feel straight away and is also cheapest to run. TTRS very quick in straight line and nice interior but a numb car to drive with lots of understeer. 987.2 Cayman very good and great feel newer caymans nicer inside but lose feel. Alpine is great drive one epic cars
@@Gibbo205 If only the Alpine had a quality interior, it would be an absolute no brainer for me. No apple or android auto either, that is piss poor for a car costing 60k.
@@oliverpearson1577the car has a suede interior option really lifts it and my car has both wireless Apple CarPlay and android auto from factory
@@Gibbo205 How old is your car? Is it a GT?
@@oliverpearson1577 Car is a March 2022 A110S with every option. :)
The spec is amazing, probably one of the best spec I have seen!
Congratulations on your awesome car . Mind those zip on your jacket with those lovely bucket seats !😬
I have the 2023 but I do admire this year's design, maybe one of the best.
👍
Congrats on the beautiful car. Looks amazing. Happy motoring!
As an owner of a Cayman S Black Edition, with the same engine and wheels, I can assure you that you'll thoroughly enjoy the driving. 987.2 is the pinnacle of the Boxster/Cayman history. (I've also owned 981 and 718 versions)
Yeah also owned a 991 GT3 and the feel in the Cayman R is certainly better for sure.
ohhh you are lucky! I am a homeless person and so sad for me to see lucky people in their lives. I worked backwards in my life I was rich once and now live in rough in a tent.
981 GT4 owner here, Im a huge fan of the Cayman R, such a great drivers car and quite a rare beast
I’m hoping to borrow a 718 GT4 in future to compare it
Great video mate
Thanks 👍
Love that colour! Nice rare car 👍
It sure is!
£36k for the R8 is a billy bloody bargain mate. They have slowly started to creep up in value, from a low I would say last year / beginning of this year. Never selling mine I dont think...I've chucked approx. £15k in 3 years (just about to chuck another £3k on new coilovers) ....love it ... Happy driving
Yeah it is a brilliant car, I do love it and so far its been good, no issues. :)
Congratulations. Love the colour, and indeed these R's. My neighbour recently bought the 981 GTS in Peridot Green....looks so much better in the flesh.. You have a similar car collection to mine (R8 V8 and 981 Spyder) ....Happy driving.
Thank you yeah it’s a good pairing with the R8 👍
That R8 is beautiful! If & when you sell it I need to know! Hahaha
Will do!!
Fantastic! Enjoy. I have an Agate Grey 981 Cayman S myself. Love it to bits.
Briony has always fancied a Cayman R for years, so we have always been on the look out but finding a Peridot green with PDK and buckets was not easy, we suspect only around ten in the UK exist, but she finally now has her dream car and she shares her first driving impressions in this video. :)
Hi there, does it come with wireless android auto?
Yes it does
Love the Cayman R in that spec and I sense the imminent departure of the A110S. I think you'd really need the A110R to even get close to the Cayman R special factor. Be interesting to see how the R compares to the S on track! Cheers, for filming, editing and uploading the contact, Kevin.
Thanks Kevin yeah the R is very special, we have had a minor issue with it which I am fixing myself and there shall be a video coming of the repair in coming weeks.
Great color! It is so rare here in the states, especially in peridot. The black wheels go with peridot really well. I would PPF the entire car.
Yeah there was only 42 right hand drive peridot Cayman R in UK, half of which are PDK and only around 10 PDK with bucket seats, so pretty rare.
Sick looking whip. Congrats to you both.
2nd! Lol. Nice car. I'd want a white or silver one.
For us Cayman R has to be in the exclusive Peridot Green
