Alpine A110S - Possibly the most accomplished car I have ever driven....

- I always knew the Alpine A110 was going to be a good car, but perhaps I hadn't realised exactly how good it was going to be. But an invitation to come to Le Mans to see the reveal of the new Alpine A290 hot hatch was too good an opportunity to waste by letting the train take the strain. So I borrowed the keys to an A110S and headed to La Sarthe. To say I was surprised by how the car drove would be putting it mildly.....

Yep, two years in and still loving it. Every journey is special, every journey brings a smile. Love this thing.
Such great cars!
Literally just put a deposit down on a new A110 pure 3 hours ago! Rarer than a Porsche Cayman, less hassle than a Lotus. And prettier than both! Liked and subbed!
Perfectly summed up.
Had my A110S since new last Sept, tweaked a little with an engine and transmission remap, Life110 air filter Life110 AST coilovers, Life110 geometry, titanium tie-rod ends, Life110 gearshift paddles, titanium wheel bolts, EVO Corse Cup wheels. Lotus owners "get" it, Porsche owners are just baffled that I did not choose a Porsche. Not regretted buying it and will be a very long term keeper, a brilliant car for the Welsh roads where I do a lot of my driving. The changes I have made are very much to personal taste, although the Life110 geo, gearshift paddles and air filter are fantastic changes that all A110 owners should invest in Love the Alpine heritage and the fact its not the default Lotus / Porsche choice.
Two little errors - the rear screen lifts up after undoing some knurled screws in the boot area and the engine cover then lifts out after undoing the quick release clips. The GT also has the same 300hp engine as the S and R, only the base A110 has the 252hp unit
it is still an automatic though..so, not a real driver's car.
@@eugenux - very strange statement. Are you the kind of person that also things like servo assisted brakes and fuel injection make cars less of a "real drivers car". Do current F1 cars become less of a drivers because of the lack of a clutch pedal?
Would a manual option be good - possibly but having lived with this for 9 months I can honestly say that it being DCT has not diminished the enjoyment factor at all, I mainly drive in manual mode so have the interaction / control I want. Fortunately I have two other "real drivers cars" that do have clutch pedals
Have owned a A 110GT bought new 18 months ago . Been driving for 50 years and best driving car I have owned and have had many. Epic on B-roads but solid and comfortable on motorways. Great tribe of likeminded owners who understand how special the Alpine is, the low weight , supple ride and sufficient power to use on UK roads with no loss of fun being an Auto.box .Not forgetting the excellent mpg. If you get one , prepare to spend many hours explaining what it is and how it’s not a Sunbeam or BMW ! A definite keeper. Clearly you get it .
Good choice of car and maybe someday I’ll join the band of owners! TH-cam will have to work in my favour though!!!🤣
I have recently purchased a new A110 in iconic Alpine Blue. I'd wanted one for years & I have no regrets. I've a long history with RenaultSport cars, I've also owned a Porsche Cayman & the Alpine ticks all the boxes for me..! 💙
Liking your reviews. Very natural and comprehensive. Love the car and the community within the owners.
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. Really appreciate that.
I am mid 50, and Swabian.
Saving money is innate like with the Scots. 😎
After testdriving a 110S last spring, I switched to a GT. As German B and C roads are bumpy and getting worse. Steering in air is a challenge...
Yes. Bought it.
Compared e.g. to 11 years Elise S1 you do not mess around with high sills, rattling, etc. It is a mature car.
So far no quality issues.
Useful and fun? Yes!
My wife and I travelled for a 5 days South-Tirol- holiday with hiking boots, backpack, etc. There is enough space for luggage. Ok - maybe put the jackets behind the seat.
Enjoy travelling and alpine passes and leave the seat with a big smile.
The ratio of low fuel consumption (weight) to fun is amazing. Best car I did own so far.
I have to think about a severe investment: an Alpine cap like yours....
BR FROM A SWABIAN😎
Good choice of car! And thank you for watching and taking the time to comment.
Ive had my A110S for circa two and half months, it was dealer stock so came with the CUP2s option, uprated focal stereo and the Alcantara dash / steering wheel etc. It was in the traditional Alpine Blue colour. The bucket seats are suprisingly comfortable, the cornering ability (certainly in the dry) is like glue, you can do serious miles and feel relaxed then enjoy a challenging B road and I do like the noise of the little 4 pot. Looks are incredibly subjective, I like it and it does draw some serious attention which can be fun at times. Weaknesses, door plastics are on the cheap side, dealers are a real 'hit and miss' with some on point and others just terrible which grates when paying Porsche prices, cooling fans love to hum away for a good while after engine switch off (not a real issue) and the black surrounds of the wing mirrors really are cheap and nasty looking. Overall I love it! You asked what drew me to it, I had a new G series M2 on deposit and ready to collect when I saw an A110 advert and as the nearest dealer was only 40 mins away I went for a test drive (a few hours unaccompanied) and the M2 order was cancelled!
Sounds like you fell for it like I did!!! Good choice! And thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.
Your comments very closely match my own experience with the car.
I had an 'S' and sold it... to buy an 'R'. On my second Alpine A110. I dare you to actually drive one and then criticise it.
I probably couldn’t….other than the fact it’s still too expensive for little old me!!! 😂😂
I sold my Porsche 993 and 968 to buy a second hand Premiere Edition and an Alfa Giulia Estrema. Without doubt the best car I have ever owned. I fell in love with the original A110 when I first saw one and lusted after one from that day. When the new A110 was released and I saw the reviews my mind was made up. I’ll be keeping this car until I can no longer drive. Great review but you omitted to mention the MPG of around 40 which is phenomenal for a sports car. Also there is a downside you didn’t mention, the car is so light that it does not like strong crosswinds at motorway speeds, the lightness means it wants to wander!
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. Yes, you are right, economy was very good with the car. I should’ve mentioned it.
I have an a110, you get it, nice work!
Thank you very much for watching and taking the time to comment. Obviously I am now very jealous of your car!!
Excellent review said with passion. Subscribed
Welcome aboard!
Superb review of the only car I really really want! Still saving. Have subscribed as I have already done on your EV channel. Keep up the great work 🙌
You and me both!
Anyway, thank you for watching and subbing to both channels. Much appreciated.
Magnifique the review!
Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment. I really appreciate that.
Great review, really enjoyed it… subscribed👍
Awesome, thank you!
Subscribed and loved the video
Thank you and thank you.🙏
In France, a new 2024 718 Cayman/Boxster has a E 60'000.00 malus on top of the price ... the A110 s 'only' E 2726.00 ... also definitely prefer double wish bone suspension in the A110 even if front boot space is compromised. But the A110 would be a sunny day/weekend car for me, so would prefer a 2 litre Caterham and keep my 1.5 3 cylinder race red Fiesta ST for every day fun, come rain, shine or snow 😊 Appreciated your review ! Thanks and greetings from Thoiry 01 / Geneva
Unfortunately not available in Australia. I had a Fiat X-1/9 4 speed in Europe (70s and then a 5 Speed in Australia., 80s) Once you have driven a light mid engine car, there’s no going back. Wonderful memories.
Were did the 10k in options on your test car come from, aro kit and paint aside?
Bought my GT for its looks, heritage (I’ve owned a couple of Alpines in my youth) and driving capabilities. I own other cars (often more expensive) but I can safely say that this one is the car getting the most sympathy from the public and by far. It has a few niggles but overall it is a great package. Dealers can be a hit or miss. Some can be terrible and some are better. None great in my opinion and that’s a shame.
And here I thought, I was in love with this thing. ^^ Currently in the process of buying a Pure, I am so jealous of you brits for your car prices. Here in Germany, a S with any serious spec is 75k+€ and used prices are much higher than on the island as well. My only criticism after test driving a GT were that the comfort seats were not for me, lack of cupholder and the cheap feeling light and audio controls.
Go and see David at Life 110. He will make it even better. Trust me.
I’m sure.
I don't think I have ever seen one here in New Zealand?
Just get a racing car then durrr!🥴
Just here to spread jealousy driven hate since the U.S. still can’t buy these…
you talk a lot but dont say too much.
In what way? Do I not get the information across to you? Or opinion?
it cannot be accomplished when it is an automatic; not a real driver's car because of this singular issue, unfortunately.
Respectfully have to disagree with you there. Plenty of interaction with this transmission as it’s a DCT. Plenty of good drivers cars don’t have three pedals and a stick.
@@bryanmcmorran782I respectfully disagree; 99% of dct cars are driven in automatic and from experiencing dual clutch gearboxes in cars like the Renault sport, different VW group DSGs, pdks(cayenne, 911, panamera) and a DKG in an M3, I can, wholeheartedly, say that any automatic, of any kind, will be detrimental to the driving experience; the interaction is so low on a "to do scale", feeling like less than 10% of what a manual would offer.
The problem is, ppl will make excuses all the time because they want the easy way; automatics of every type, in sports cars, are just excuses for ppl who can't or don't want to drive..ppl who brought their sports cars just for show and are not and will never be actually interested in driving, actual driving and the experience that actual driving brings into one's life.
edit./p.s. if you are a driver, you are mashing your own gears; if you are a pretender, sure, go with the automatic route.
Sure, would also prefer a 6 speed manual but the transmission tunnel is not wide enough ...
Well said and totally agree👏👏👏
manuals make all the difference in a true drivers car. Look at Gordon Murray‘s T50.
For fuck sake, move from handicap parking space!!! Even worse you are blocking two.
Did you not listen to the video? I explained that I was in a closed off car park that wasn’t open to the public when I filmed, hence why I was on those spaces. And please watch your language on here. Thank you.
@@bryanmcmorran782 Come on, you know they never ACTUALLY listen. Never underestimate the stupidity of the great British public 🤣
Don’t take the bait mate.
