    Watch the engine masters episode where they literally smash headers flat and then dyno them. It didn’t make a difference. So whatever you come up with should work great. Good job brother.

    You're a great father man. I've been watching since you wide bodied the MR2 yes you could call me og. But you've been the father most kids dream of. Man my father would tell at me at tell me to get away from the tools. So needless to say I've had to teach myself and figure things out. Keep being the rad father you are.
    Also the manifolds came out really good for your first time. You've always inspired me to do things I've never thought of trying. Thank you. Keep killing it. 🤘

    Fun to watch. Without the cash for a 3D printer, I did the same using electrical conduit. I determined the radius of bends desired and cut the conduit accordingly. Initially, it takes a long time but saves a lot of time in the end. My first header (ever) came out with 24 pieces, one inch each. I scribed the ends of each piece and drilled at least 2 holes in them, then dropped a staple in to connect 2 pieces. Then I covered it with tape to hold the staples.
    Starting with the most distant cylinder, once done, I ran the others to match the length for equal length headers. Key was to make a jig representing the start and end points. Easy to do in wood. With the first mock up header done in staples and tape, I removed the staples and tape and added conduit glue. The second header went super fast. I just cut and glued the pieces to mirror the first set. I got a perfect mock up first time at a cost of three 10 foot conduit pipes. About $30 or less including the glue. I also made clamps easy. It just took a little time using galvanized fencing wire. I made 6 clamps. They allowed me to Tig. Overall, it seemed daunting and slow initially but I saved a lot of bucks and once I saw how simple and precise it is even for a first time, I am so glad I took the time.

  • @wjpreslar
    @wjpreslar 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Thanks for doing this with a MIG. TIG is wonderful. It does a beautiful job, but MIG is much more accessible and you've taken some of the mystery out of this for noob car guys. I don't always like your builds, but I always enjoy watching the process and your progress.

    First off, I commend you on tackling this project on your own. That said, this right here, is an accurate depiction of why things like this cost so much. Your comment "this is where skill and experience comes in" says it all. When you look at something like a header that costs $1000 for someone to build, this is why.

    Just watch out for back pressure on the silver one! That will be a rought turn for the gasses, they need to flow like a river man hahahahah

  • @TheRoadhammer379
    @TheRoadhammer379 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I am curious about the scavenging of the exhaust Gases. A standard collector has all the tubes meeting at one point but they all go the same direction into the collector. The homemade collector looks like the tubes will be canceling each other out as Gases come in from 4 different directions and crash into each other. I give you a 10/10, you set out to do something with zero experience and you came away with a complete set of headers. Absolutely righteous and absolutely ingenuitive on the collector. I built my first set of headers last year, fenderwell exit for an F350 and it was a pain in the ass but your situation made me say... hell no, this man is the DIY peoples champion!!

    I built some for the 1st. time the week of 4/15/24 and I'll never attemp that again until I get a tig welder. I used my Lincoln with .035 flux core(I had no money for different wire) and that is awesome wire to burn through rust, paint, mill slag and you can weld in high wind. But it is dirty. Lots of cleaning up of splatter and smoke. My lowest setting is way too hot for thin exhaust pipe. But I'm finally finished. Make sure you leave room for spark plugs, dip stick and wires and anything else that might be in the way

    This year my first welding project ever was to build headers. I bought a straight pipe and some 90 degree bends, i took some measurements and drew some flanges in cad. A local cnc shop cut them out for me which was very handy. It was very difficult to mock up the bends without any planning but it worked out. The only problems i had was that the pins and nuts would unscrew themselves and the flanges got warped, but i managed to grind them down with a flap disc and put an extra thick gasket to seal it.

    Pipes need to be even lengths from each exhaust port, otherwise you'll get uneven flow of exhaust gasses, causing problems with pressure etc.
    Good luck very bold to try making them yourself!

    The U.K. MGB GT V8 with a Rover engine had cast iron manifolds that fitted inside the inner wing. The inner wing is not cut. However, all the cars were based on rubber bumper shell not chrome. Most V8 Conversions in U.K. have stainless tubular manifolds to a stainless exhaust. Not seen any with a hole in the wing. I owned a factory car for 15 years. I drive a 911 now.

    Still would have tried to do symmetrical, the two outside ones to the inner back part of the collector, the 2 middle ones over the top and to the front side of the collector. Also depends on how high or low the collector is. Guess would still have to figure where spark plugs are and the wires. Don't need to constantly be burning the wires or wire plugs like Cleetus was for a while there....lol

    • @peterdarr383
      @peterdarr383 ปีที่แล้ว

      David Visard says equal length headers are wrong. For example on the SBC the 7 immediately follows the 5 so you would want extra length in what is usually the shortest pipe.
      It's also what makes the V8 rumble.
