      Honestly, snapon sockets will probably wear out faster than some of the cheaper ones. Their wrenches and extension are made of the toughest stuff around, but their sockets are a smidge on the softer side. The deal with them that people like is how they fit. They’re not this soft though. They didn’t heat treat these right would be my guess.

  • @snoprosledneck88

    Why did you only show one socket. I understand that one looks bad but without showing other ones I tend to think you abused one socket. Something happened to that socket that the others were not subject to. Also looks like you were beating the side of the socket with a hammer.

    I was trained to break a bolt free using the solid non ratchet bar and then ratchet bar to undo. I never break loose a rusty or torqued on bolt with the ratchet.

    There are a few things absolutely no one takes into consideration. No, you don't need Snap On stuff to make more than 6+ figures a year. Buying off of the tool truck doesn't determine how good you're quality of work is, You can take all your f'd up tools to HF and warranty/exchange them out same day, with zero questions. All of the Icon stuff hasn't been out that long, still tons of room for improvement so their tools should/will get better. Because they're much cheaper, you can pay out of pocket for these and load up your box with tools you need, and really never be in debt or have to fork out hundreds and hundreds of dollars for a 5 piece wrench set. A big one is, use the right tool(s) the proper way and all of your stuff should last much longer. I know guys that run high end, top notch shops and they still use some HF tools, my box is filled with all the tool truck brands and HF stuff, including Gearwrench and Tekton. The list goes on and on, and on. Anyways, I like your channel and did sub.

      Good techs dont need to abuse their tools. My first 2 years I used cheap Chinese junk. They worked just fine. After a few years, I ponied up for snapon, it wasn't worth the expense, I replaced them at roughly the same rate.

    • @mr.appalachian8252

      It’s a time and money waster (time is money) to have to run to HF on a daily basis replacing junk tools especially if the nearest HF is 30 miles away, this stuff is not meant for a professional mechanic, maybe a home owner or a back yard hack.

    It isn't the chrome that is soft; it is the steel. The chrome plating is adhering to the steel and not flaking off. All chrome vanadium steel is not created equal. Of course, you may have just encountered a couple of items made of steel containing impurities or that weren't properly heat treated (and that does happen).
    The Snap-on website indicates that its hand tools are made "from a steel alloy that's become the gold standard. This special blend of steel allows for a higher heat treat than average steel - meaning each tool gets a specified hardness for the right toughness and strength you need in each application."
    Thank you for providing your observations on real world use of Icon tools.

    The tool truck hype is hype as far as I'm concerned. I don't believe in the tooth fairy for the prices ICON is coming in at. Like you say, it's DIY stuff and the prices reflect that. As a weekend mechanic who likes nice tools, I am loving ICON for the profiling, fit and finish. The tools are awesome for what I do and I will continue to buy them. An excellent addition to US General and Earthquake which I have been buying and using with confidence for years. I'll be dead before I wear this stuff out.

      Well see you just wrench on the weekends. But if you was in the shop or field or side of the road daily for years. You'd definitely most likely form a different opinion. Yes there are some tools that are just as good as snap on mac matco and so on. But it's hard to beat there tools. I said the same thing for plenty of years. Then finally started buying higher tools and I see and feel the difference.

    Tool trucks are for kids with no cash and bad credit. Out of my 25yrs of real world professional experience, I have never bought tool truck sockets or wrenches. Tool trucks are good for some specialty items, in most cases you can get elsewhere as well. I noticed you using a 13/16? They stopped using standard on vehicles long before you were ever a technician. Helpful advice, use the correct tool the correct way and you will almost never break anything with the exception of snap on and macs made in china and japan air tools and cordlesses. By the way I'm not only speaking as a technician of 25yrs but a shop owner as well.

Also a shop owner also a owner of a fleet of service trucks that service class 8 trucks and farm equipment. And so on and on. So what we can gather from this. Is you are the type that watches a video and assumes that the person making the video is a nobody and dosent know what they are talking about. Before you go off judging someone do your research properly. Thank you have a nice evening

    I will say in the last couple weeks of having the icon 3/8 metric sockets and beating the crap out of them, i am impressed so far. I am a mechanic for a living and 90% of my tools are snap on, mac, matco, cornwell but im also the kind of guy that if it gets the job done i dont care what brand it is. I agree with the statement these sockets are good for someone just starting out in a shop environment or an “active” diy person, i have used my sockets on my cordless impacts and air impacts pretty regularly and so far so good although im only a couple weeks in, its going to take a couple months at least before im fully on board or not with the “Pro” tool claim because i dont know many people that abuse tools like i do but then again my high end tools all take the abuse daily and have for years. I am interested in picking up more sockets to test out from the Icon line since im liking what ive got so far... or ya know if someone wants to send some my way lolz. AS I SAID IM ONLY A COUPLE WEEKS IN ON THESE THINGS AND THEY ARENT COMPLETELY HAMMERED AS OF “YET” THAT COULD CHANGE IN A DAY, A WEEK OR A MONTH! Thanks for reading!

      Tool Time I think the quality control might need some work on the products maybe just from like the ratchet recall and seeing that socket of yours. Heck if they fix the QC process and bump the product price up 10$ per product i still think it would be a fair investment personally. Then again who knows i could go in the shop and have a socket pop on my impact. But so far so good for the last couple weeks at least and so far I wouldn’t hesitate to suggest the products to anyone in the market or just looking to try something else out from the norm.

    @dtnel 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    If some of you haven't noticed there was a recall last week on ICON sockets by Harbor Freight.
    I've got Chrome sockets of Mac Tools, Craftsman and Snap-On that I've had 20+ yrs and used impact wrenches on with a 1/2 to 3/8 adapter and never had a issue like the wallowing out and the dents. I have other cheap brands, performance tool and klutch and never have had any issues.
    Think you better keep the good sockets on the truck with you.
    IF they're not snap on and your mad everyone is comparing them then just don't keep them on the truck.
    As a matter of fact do a giveaway for a subscriber.
    Gearwrench is fine and the same mfr that makes gearwrench makes about 3-4 other brands.
    Don't sweat the small stuff and go bank to your tools you like and move on.

    Impact sockets use a softer metal anyway so seeing the drive end starting to round out is common, but a chrome socket is supposed to be hard steel (that's why it breaks on impact, too much force cracks them). The fact that the icon looks like that as a chrome socket isn't good to see, and I work at harbor freight

Not saying the metal isn't softer but I'd like to see the bolt, situation, and method you were using that socket when it received those mars on the side and back. The mars look strikingly similar though (assuming) they occurred at different times. What are you working on that uses mostly 13/16? Suggest maybe taking pics or short video when this type of damage happens and the area/item that caused it to help with the validity of the claim..

I do have a lot of tools from my days as a machine operator they are mainly Proto, SK, Wright, and JH Williams also Channel Lock. I think Im going to stick with what I already have, those brands above that I mentioned withstood daily use. If u hold one up to snap on sockets there nearly identical. Where did the word wallerd even come from. Hahah I'm a pro tech of 20 years I have used each and ofcoarse the snap on ratchets are way nicer. Any tool is professional grade if a professional grade technician has a hold of it. I think ur grading the tool based on where it's manufactured. Last time I checked snapons American made using global material. Try comparing snapons to nepros and let's see ur opinion.

I did buy a couple of things from Gear Wrench the master bit set a back up 3/8 ratchet 120xp and a set of ratcheting xl wrenches. I am leary of The new Icon line, I think they should have done further R&D before they released their line up. From my previous job working in manufacturing, we used a lot of proto and SK tools to service our machines, also the hodge podge of tool brands our leads brought in for their personal use. I've seen HF and craftsman fail. The tool's our company gave us the Proto and SK stuff, we abused the f×$k out of them and kept going. Those reversible ratcheting combo wrenches are OEMed from GearWrench. That's why they are so good and holding up. That's GearWrench's patented design that first came out in the late 1990s. I was an early adopter back then and was very impressed with a metric set. Held up well against my regular USA Craftsman combo wrenches. Pulled a tranny to swap a clutch, suspension and axle work, and dropped an Audi, and then a BMW diff with them. Numerous timing belt jobs and wheel bearings. None slipped or rounded off.

But I’m a diesel tech, so something there a lot more room to work. An the only thing that is compare work just as good as snap on was the USA made craftsman socket. Anyone can see that that socket wasn't heat treated. It's not soft chrome. How is it he can beat on that wrench with a hammer without a mark ? I can't answer for that mistake but you can't knock icon sockets just yet. They may turnout to be junk but let's judge them on a fair playing field first. What do you think a snap on socket would look like if it wasn't heat treated ? It wouldn't last any longer. I do wonder how that socket slipped through the factory without being heat treated though. You can get a manufacturer defect from any brand. ANY BRAND. They may end up being junk in the long run but I'm going to wait and see. I have the sense to not include this one factory defect of missing heat treating against the whole line. Let's see how you make out with the 1/2 inch on your truck because chances are they didn't miss heat treating. When this turns out to be true be a stand up guy and admit it.

    There are literally thousands of occasions where snap on and other brand wrenches have broken. That has a lifetime warranty may actually idk, try another one before calling something "junk". Every single tool manufacturer has had defective tools. Can't really speak on the sockets though I've heard others say they're soft.

  • @rupunzel6299
    @rupunzel6299 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Snap On impact sockets are soft, wear out with extended or powerful impact wrenches on stuck nuts-bolts. They have NOT held up well at all over years of usage. Stopped using all Snap-On impact sockets years ago due to them being soft and not holding up well. Warranty sort of OK, except GOOD impact sockets like Wright Tool hold up a LOT better than Snap-On which are over priced for what they are.
    If that ratchet failed with that Icon 13/16" socket, was was being wrenched on when it failed? A 13/16" socket implies a threaded fastener that is 1/2" diameter or larger which should always be wrenched on with 1/2" square drive or 3/4" square drive or box wrench. 3/8" drive by any brand is too small for this diameter of threaded fastener. The dents on the side of that Icon 13/16" socket could have only been done by hammering on the side of the socket. Regardless, take that 13/16" socket in for replacement, and continue on.
    Some of the best impact sockets are OZAT, made in Israel and Momento made in Sweden. Their primary market is industrial making them mostly unknown to auto wrenching folks.

    • @tooltime126
      @tooltime126  4 ปีที่แล้ว

I had them up until the time i sold my box and tools (6 months ago). I almost NEVER broke a husky socket. I even used 3/8 drive air impact guns, ratchets with the chrome sockets. The only time i ever had to go back to home depot to get a new socket is when i lost one. There were a few times when i lost a socket, i'd buy a snap on to replace it, and i had those break with my every day use. i never got into the snap on hype i guess. obviously, certain stuff, absolutely. can't beat a snap on ratchet, etc. anyways, i really only just brought that up because of the "snap on, matco, mac,cornwall" comment that was made. i'm slowly rebuilding my tools back up.. i'm just getting what i need for personal use and light vehicle maintenance on my own vehicles. either way, i've been looking into the icon stuff. i do have an icon ratchet that seems pretty nice. sockets? i went with craftsman this time.. how they hold up.. we'll see i guess.

      I started my business with the bottom of the barrel cheapest tools I could get. Then now I'm lucky to be In a position to where I can collect certain tools and brands and stuff along those lines. If you know what i mean.

    I have seen random issues on occasion, but for the most part they have performed well. Then factoring in the price differences between truck brands and HF brands, it seems like the choice will depend on how hard the tool will be used and your budget.
    I do also frequently warranty tool truck brands. Especially 10, 13, 19 and 21mm sizes.
    I am doing similar comparisons for myself as well.

    I'm pretty sure the wrenches will do a better performance than the sockets. I like the wrenches sockets no cause I have my original Craftsman set when they use to be made in America instead of China.

    The chrome on the icon ratchet I bought had chrome flaking out of the box. Traded it in. If you put any angular pressure on the handle the teeth try to lock up. Never had those issues with the Pittsburgh pro.

    If that really hasn’t been on a gun that’s awful. They will never last if the metal is that soft.

    Packaging and appearance will sell. This is HF's strategy. Package it nice, make it look like a tool truck brand and guilbles will fall for it every time. Those 5 grand tool boxes made in Taiwan are completely crazy

    That 3/8 ratchet that you say it lock up sometime isnt Icon tool. It look like William's tool.

    I have ICON tools a shot in a professional environment. My snap on guy was sick for about a month with covid so I went out and bought a set when I needed some new sockets and a new ratchet. Within a week the ratchet was slipping and my sockets are starting to look the same. Extremely disappointed. I’d buy husky before that shit again. I’m embarrassed to have mr snap on make fun of me for cheating on him.

    I use my chrome duralast 3/8 sockets in my m12 ratchet and m12 impact driver.. they hold up way better than those icon imo
