This is a fun, yet unnerving fact. You notice when Valentino spits up red gunk from his mouth occasionally or when he smokes the cigarette has regular smoke while when Val exhales it’s red. That’s because like real world moths and other such insects they secrete pheromones. When he licked Charlie, he tried to turn her into one of his sex workers, I don’t know what the term is for it but because she’s half human, half angel, and part demon she was immune to his advances and to his pheromones. That’s how Valentino has so many underlings in the adult film industry, how he got Angel to sell his soul to him, and why he became an Overlord of Hell. He knows how to manipulate others with his tantalizing saliva, which is not only disgusting but it’s genuinely terrifying. That’s the “poison” that Angel was referring to. Val saying this in Episode 2 supports this fact as well… “Just put something inside them, that’s how I get the bitches to behave.”
Furthermore that Loan Shark who tried to spike Angel’s drink had a love potion, that love potion was actually made by Velvette, another one of the Vees by using Valentino’s saliva. Yeah I think it’s safe to say that not only is he the one of the most cruel and evil Overlords and sinners in Hell, but he might very well be the most dangerous of the Vees, even more so than Vox.
Much lighter-hearted fact, Val actually squeaks when he moves sometimes like how real Moths do. If you go back to the previous episodes and listen closely you can hear squeaking in any scene he’s in.
It's safe to say Val is the exact opposite to Asmodeus, and if sinners could leave the pride ring and he went to lust he'd get smoked for his bs. Ozzie doesn't tolerate that nonsense.
His saliva is an aphrodisiac. It lowers inhibitions and makes it harder to resist. Velvette distills it into love potions to sell.

@@Eggeer During the song "Poison" where Val takes a cigarette and turns the usual grey smoke into red and exhales it into Angel's face, you can see Angel look disorientated and out of it. That's how he controls the souls he owns.
Also the thing that might add how Angel got into the fangs of someone like Val is because he was in a mob and his family didn't tolerate someone like homosexual, so he had to hide it and do it secretly. When he arrived in hell, Angel probably realized that he is not that caged anymore and tried to live his life to the fullest. He might have found someone that know Val.. and that's how he got there.
Also his mob family had ancestors (or did come directly) from Italy.. Antonio is the italian name, but since Angel Dust was born in America, Anthony makes more sense. Might be that both names are true - his family calling him 'Antonio' but he likes the english version better.
And yes, Angel Dust is his stage name. Also it's probably wiser to not say their true names.. until you are called Charlie or Alastor.

8. I’m willing to bet Anthony became Angel Dust long before Valentino because he didn’t like who he was or the things that happened to him as Anthony

It is Hell; I have seen weirder.
So, Valentino is Specifically a type of moth that lays parasitic eggs on spiders after drugging them with their wing dust. And Angel is based on a spider that is both a targeted species and one of the Few that has some resistance to the dust, making it so in rare cases the spider manages to strike back… albeit usually only after having been infected.
Do you know the names of the kinds of moth and spider? I want to look them up.
@@TheNo1pencil so i believe that the spider is the wooly crab spider, a close relative of the goldenrod crab spider, however i am utterly blanking on the scientific name or the common name of the damn moth… i seem to remember that it was thought to be a mimic of the cecropia moth (all the better to eat their prey) but beyond that im actually finding trouble finding the species. I just remembered the posts they made lining up with articles i had read and thus the bonus knowledge past the base info of the relationship.

I am struggling to find the info too. The wiki page for the wooly crab spider isn't helpful, as it just says they're prayed on by parasites without elaborating. Apparently moths of the Miltochrista genus can sometimes lay eggs on silver spiders. Thats not the relationship you're talking about though.
Scarlet bodied wasp moths (which are moths) have super striking red colors and males use toxic pheromones from their wings. Apparently the pheromones excite females and drug up spiders, but it's used to drive the spiders away instead of go after them, so it's also not what I'm looking for.
Most moths aren't parasitoids, so moths mimicking spiders and wasps attacking spiders keep hogging all the google results ☠️
I bet you twenty bucks that Angels contract doesn't cover contract termination because "princess of hell and or higher decides to execute overlord demon Valentino"

Yeah, if it were that simple, I'm willing to bet that Angel would have considered it. I expect the stipulation would be against people interceding on Angel's behalf. The only way out would be if someone took Val out independently of Angel and not for him.
But that's just speculation, it could very well just be Valentino gaslighting Angel into thinking no one can help him. Perhaps we'll find out in season 2.
Oh... I love the idea of gaslightening. Make it more believeable if their were "unwritten" rules... and who know what a soul happen if they try to break them. The "unknown" might be even more frightening!

Said it before, and I'll keep saying it. Love Val's body language and how he's drawn in this episode. With Charlie he actually speaks to her at eye level as an equal. With Angel/Anthony there's rarely any shot he isn't made to be this towering or looming presence over him, forcibly placing himself in a position of power over our boy so often even the camera follows the trend.
It helps that he's designed to be genuinely one of the tallest Overlords. Hell, I think he might even be taller than Zestial himself. Dude is definitely like... 10 or 11 feet tall, at least.
Also, for reference, Charlie's level of power is no secret. Everyone knows she could eliminate like... Every sinner in hell with a flick of her wrist, Overlord or not.
It's just that how soft and pacifistic she is also isn't a secret.
Remember, she's 200 years old. Plenty of Sinners would know how she thinks by now, even without knowing her personally.
Vox is 7ft tall, yet next to Val he is small, that should tell you how massive valentino is.
Yeah. Charlie is a major power house, but as we saw with Vaggie bringing it up, she refused to flex her might so to those like Val all he has to do is get Angel Dust worried for her and he wins. If Angel didn't step in Val would be in for a world of hurt if not dead. But because Val knows how to play Angel Charlie backs off.
@@2495781 I honestly don't even think Val getting onto him had much to do with Anthony telling Charlie to go the second time. I think it definitely has something to do with how forceful he was, but I think Anthony was gonna ask her leave regardless.
Anthony, as aloof and uncaring as he portrays, greatly values Charlie's innocence. The moment She gets angry at Val enough for her demon form to start showing, Anthony likely would have stepped in to stop her from doing something she'd regret.
@colt1903 possibly. But at the same time, given what he has seen of Charlie, he might doubt that she really has the power to do anything. I mean, Val is so brazenly showing his lack of respect and even in Episode 2 was ready to try attacking the hotel before Vix stepped in because Vox knows you don't poke the royal bear.
Interesting little factoid. This is kind of revealed in a later episode but it pertains to Angel's contract.
Apparently Valentino has rights to do whatever he wants to Angel while they're in the studio. That would likely explain why he was so pissed when he found out Angel moved to the hotel. Angel's "room" was likely inside the studio, letting Val do whatever he wants, whenever he wants. But now, since Angel lives in the hotel, he's more limited in terms of when he can abuse Angel.

Carmilla's shoes are made of angelic steel despite her likely being around the same power level, no reason she'd need a weapon if she could just destroy souls permanently
One take I love about Poison that someone said is that the first part of the song is sang by Angel Dust, the mask. While the last part is sang by Anthony, the person.

PCP wasn't introduced to market until after Angel died. More likely heroin, as it was bouncing back in potency after the war and an accidental overdose would have been way easier.

Nothing said here implies mutual abuse. If you are being abused, you are in a toxic relaionship. That's what the term means. I looked up the term just to make sure and literally none of the results regarding the meaning of the term imply mutual abuse, that's just not a necessary component
I believe Valentino knows how powerful Charlie is, but also that she would never hurt anyone.

Sometimes you don't need someone to solve your problems. Sometimes you just need the reassurance that, despite it all, someone will be there with you to watch the world burn.
One thing I want to clear up so you aren’t confused is that the sinners in hell basically are the human souls that have taken a form relating to their sins and how they were in life. With them being souls, a soul contract like what Husk and Angel signed is basically them signing away their whole being into basically slavery for their overlord. Also, his name is Husker but a lot of people just say Husk for short.
Isn't it the other way around, that his name is Husk but Alastor (and a later character) call him Husker as a sort of "pet nickname" to annoy him?
@@simonO712 Maybe thats my mixup then. The first name we heard him called by was Husker so I assumed that was his real name and Husk was a later adaptation the Hotel crew used as a shorter name. Thinking back on it the only people we hear call Husk Husker are Alastor and Mi*** so Husker being a pet name would make more sense. Husk is also just a better name imo so I have no problems with this being true

Just seems like Valentino's saliva dripping from his mouth tbh. Angel has the exact same thing in the same scene this episode right after getting dragged off-screen by Val

If I’m remembering correctly Vivziepop said that Angel was a mobster, he belonged to a crime family, hence the spider design. It’s a hint to his family and their web of crime. So you’re right.
Also, Vivzie herself confirmed that Husker and Angel were endgame. So that’s amazing, Angel needs someone like Husk in his life. (Husk is confirmed pansexual btw)
And to answer your question about Vox, those pink lines at the corner of his mouth is to indicate when he’s upset, or just really unhinged. We see it in his and Alastors song from episode two as well.

Angel Dust was part of a mafia family when he was alive. Not to mention he was born during a time where homosexuality was likely frowned upon and discriminated against, so those are likely his main sins that got him into Hell.

Something that isn't brought up. Angel has a gold tooth that matches one val has. I think that is just a constant reminder of everything that angel has
I've noticed a lot of the 'actors' that work for Valentino have that gold tooth. Maybe it's something Valentino does to them to mark them as his property.

Well interesting a gold tooth is one of those very common designs in the series that doesn't mean much, just like with how most characters have something around their neck like a bow tie or choker it's just a design choice Vivzpop likes.
Probably said by someone here already, but with the whole name thing, in many mythologies, knowing a demon's real name gives one power over them, usually some kind of control. And in both Hazbin Hotel and in Helluva Boss, the shows are full of references like these. It doesn't appear to be any directly based off of any single mythology or religion, but rather a collection of them, or at least refers to many different ones.

The lines coming from Vox' mouth has been seen before when he was angry at Alastor's return and when he was singing they appeared when he got more serious, similarly it appeared with Alastor when he was going full demon form and Valentino when he got angry and was threatening Angel. It seems blood or whatever it is leaking from the mouth is just a way of showing an overlord is actually angry
Charlie is indeed more powerful than Valentino. The Overlords are only mid-rank in terms of power in the official hierarchy, below the Ars Goetia, Seven Deadly Sins, Charlie and Lilith, and Lucifer. HOWEVER Charlie lacks the will and mindset on actually using her power because she's a doormat who does not like harming others
Charlie IS the strongest person in the hotel, Alastor doesn't even come close to her power. But he DOES have the drive to use his power, while Charlie does not
Husk DID actually lose a large portion of his power. He had already lost a great amount of his power by the time he made his deal with Alastor

Husk purrs many times in the show, mostly when he's close to Angel 👀 Also: yes, everyone keeps their souls, that's what travels once they die, their souls leave their bodies and make a new form in hell (or heaven) based on how they were (Angel used to be part of the mob, creating webs of lies, that's why he's a spider). Once in hell they can make deals with eachother, and i think that those who own the most souls become overlords! Most of Valentino's souls are used (probably forced) in the sex industry, like Angel
Vox didn't have the 2 red streaks from him mouth initially, but they suddenly appeared when Val mentioned Alastor at the hotel to him.
I'm starting to think Vox had ulcer issues in life caused probably from stress that carried over into hell.
I could even see Vox dying from a rage-induced seizure, while bleeding out the mouth. That could explain why he got so mad at Alastor, that he short-circuited!

You seem to forget that magically contracts are binding and can't broken so easily, I mean look at King Triton from little mermaid a more powerful being with legendary weapon couldn't break the contract between Ursula and Ariel.

I think the reason no one addresses the idea of Charlie or Lucifer tearing up the contract is because deals are a universal power like DEATH, both parties need to agree to end a deal or else there will be consequences for one of them. Lucifer maybe the king of Hell but it is portrayed that he is powerful there are things even he or even other characters like the other sin can't do

I love the serendipity of Keith David playing another powerful Hellbound soul with super hero like abilities(Spawn).
Reddish/Pinkish drool is something we've seen multiple times from multiple characters. Vox in episode 2 during various shots. Alastor in his full Wendigo form in Episode 2. Vox and Valantino here in episode 3. Also, here in episode 3, Angel. Literally right as we cut to the final portion of Poison with him in what I assume is his room at the studio we see him wiping away pink drool.
We don't know what it means, or if it's even meant to have any sort of deeper connotations at all, but it's an interesting detail nontheless.

On the topic of how Angel Dust died. He died of an overdose of PCP, also know as angel dust after a lifetime of emotional abuse at the hands of his father, and trauma brought about during his service in WWII. Kinda fucked he named himself after the drug that killed him.
I wouldn't say it's weird for them to 'keep their soul in Hell', I'd say it's the entire point. The Soul is the thing thats damned for eternity, you leave your body behind, get slam dunked down there, so their 'Bodies' down there that regenerate when killed other than angelic weapons and probably super spooky demon magic from high tier demons, are 'Manifestations' of the soul, which would explain why it has characteristics based on how they lived and died, as determining markers.
I do understand the concept is strange though.
Your storytelling skills are top-notch. This video is a testament to the impact a well-crafted narrative can have on one's emotions.
Collectively the whole fandom wants Val introduced to a wood chipper.
it's been pointed out that the scene where angel screams at charlie to leave after valentino demands it of him, among many other thing,s is tied to how abusers will often make their victims feel like the abuser is SO powerful noone can DO anything so they actively reject help thinking noone CAN because they beleive their abuser is just that powerful.
So Angel may not accept charlie's help partially cause he's scared Valentino will hurt her, not realising that as the princess of hell Charlie is jsut naturally more powerful than a sinner like valentino, all angel's knows is if Charlie tries to help him Valentino might hurt charlie and will DEFINITELY take it out on angel either way. he thinks her even trying is fruitless.
I think Angel knows Charlie is stronger but at the same time Val still holds a lot of power over Angel, so-

The scene during Angel's song with Vox was the past when he still thought that Valentino loved him and had already made the contract imo. And the moment when Angel realized that he is in a toxic relationship with a person that only extorts him. It was already hinted in Ep. 2 that Valentino is Vox's boitoy and there will be one more hint of them having a relationship in the final episode. So the balcony scene here was when Angel realized that Valentino did never love him but only a person of true power aka Vox. At least that is my head cannon for it.

Valentino won't kill Charlie in a fight, but I'm not sure Charlie will be able to kill Valentino(due to lack of combat experience). But even if it works out, it would mix up all the cards and there would be a conflict with Vee and we would definitely lose everything

The ironic part is that the lore hierarchy of hell kind of follows the power scaling and Charlie is so far above Valentino and most Overlords that she could rip him a new one and Angel despite his best intention to shelter Charlie is probably just ironically protecting Valentino who forgot how much stronger Lucifer's child is compared to himself.
-Also not dying unless from Angelic weapon in helluva boss was specifically for Demon Royalty like Stolas and above. Sinner and by extension Overlord do not share that undying trait. Other sinners can kill people just fine, heck Alastor backstory is all about having killed off the multiple Overlord that were there before him as he rose to Overlord status.-
EDIT: Apparently after doing even more research I was dead wrong for the Sinner not respawning unless killed be angelic weapons. Moxie's quote and Alastor backstory told by Vaggie in the pilot left me believing that it was less of they can't die, only that it was harder and couldn't end themselves unless there was some massive power difference and only royalty and nobles were immune to harm outside of angelic weapons.

@@Airier I'm not sure, but Moxie quote was "the only thing that can kill demon royalty", Blitzo mother did die from a fire in hell and Alastor took out permanently other Overlords in his backstory setting who disappeared... So maybe they do, but that would have implication for Alastor and other Demons unless there is a plot hole.
@@Airier Correcting my statement some sources says they do and some says they don't and with Alastor and other Demons dying in helluva boss... it seems more complicated... Like some demons do die while others don't. Sinners (and Overlord) are not super high on the hierarchy, so I am not sure where the line would be.

All I will say is Charlie's heritage would allow her to easily kill val
social hierarchy photos of the series indicate that Lucifer is the highest ranking being in Hell, charlie and lilith are below him, the Sins and Goetia are below those two in this order and the Overlords are under Goetias. so if we also take this in terms of power, charlie can wipe the floor with Val if she was given the chance.

Heyo, know this was a couple weeks ago but I have a problem with people being like "Ugh, if only he asked Charlie, she could have surely just torn up the contract!" There is nothing to suggest that she could do that, and I think it's incredibly wishful thinking to assume there's any way that just killing Valentino would solve the problem. As far as I can see it, the only way that makes sense would be if someone sufficiently powerful, but moreso evil, such as Alastor or another Overlord, were to threaten Val with some sort of fate worse than death, or perhaps the destruction of his business in order to force him to void the contract. But no, I don't see any reason why Charlie would be able to do it.
I kind of agree and disagree with this. On the one hand. Yeah, I don't think Charlie would ever do this. Although I do believe she has the power to say this is mine and take the contract. But I don't believe Charlie would ever do that unless pushed significantly.
How's your might be in a similar position. He could be powerful enough to do it. But I don't think you would ever see any reason to.

I think the notion is that you keep ownership of your soul when you initially get to hell, since that the only part of you that gets down there. Like you can live independently as you wish. But that bartering your soul with a demon/overlord then contracts you to fulfill certain act according to circumstances of the ruling party’s choice; such as Angel having to do anything Val wants when in the studio.
35:02 Sinners keep their souls until an angel breaks it. Angel's soul is literally owned by Valentino, making it a case of if he disobeys Val, he will likely be killed for good, his soul being broken.

One thing. While Charlie does have the raw power to break Valentino over her knee, she doesn't have the sort of fighting experience and such that Valentino has. Angel likely recognizes this, and while Charlie would probably win in the end it would likely not be without consequences.

40:20 I remember reading a fan theory that most Sinners go by an alias instead of their real (human) name because there might be certain factors in Hell that hold power over someone by their real name, so an alias would be to prevent other demons having power of you (unless you're making a contract for your soul, of course). Angel is a special case where his alias seems to be about three things all at once- the drug (for him being a drug addict), his stage name, and his drag name.

Thank you so much for the video! My favourite episodes are episode 4 and 5 (enjoyed 5 more, I love the character that gets introduced there, but can’t help but appreciate the writing and themes in ep. 4), so I was really interested in seeing your reaction to them:D
It seemed to me that Angel was scared for Charlie's sake just as much, if not more so, than he was for himself. I think a lot of the characters (including Charlie herself) probably don't realize how powerful she really is since, as Vaggie said, she never uses that power.
Also, I haven't really dug deep into the Hazbin lore but I would assume you can't just rip up a soul contract no matter how powerful you are.

So nothing charlie does to him will stick and angel will get the worst of it
It is also hinted that neither Lucifer nor Charlie can do anything about the overlord contracts (Hence why Val Says, Charlie can't help)
because the sinners have to sign under their own free will
Which makes them fully binding
Even Lucifer cannot mess with free will.
A contract is meaningless if someone with power can just rip it up.
That's why the overlords can't just make deals with other overlords owned souls or undermine their own deals
