How to Change Transmission Fluid on Honda Acura

  • I finally had some free time and really warm weather and changed my transmission fluid today. I was using Honda MTF but the gears were not as smooth anymore and felt like gears were sticking. I went with a pretty inexpensive Mobil 10w30 motor oil. This is what the owners manual suggests for these cars when they were produced. The engine and transmission however are not the originals but are from the same years but from the Japanese models. It is an obd0 cable transmission b16a.
    Changing the fluid will be identical for any 88-00 Civic / CRX AND Integra 90-01 with a B or D series engine.

    Another spot you can put the oil in from if you can't break the fill plug loose is the reverse switch. I've had to do that a few times due to a stripped fill plug

    It’s interesting that you can use 10w30 on D series and K series and B series and even the H series and the usual Ams Oil And Honda Transmission Fluid - has to be Manuel Transmission fluid by the way yes I’m 4 yrs late also on a b series I believe you can fill it up on the speed sensor if you don’t have the right nozzle hose and only the funnel

    Hey man helpful video! I gotta ask though as Im trying to piece together an intake for my 91 integra using the stock air box. Where did you get that intake pipe with the slight bend on either side for your civic? Thanks man!

    • @GarageBuiltHondas
      @GarageBuiltHondas  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It was a regular short ram intake. I cut it where the stock air box met the intake arm and bought a silicon coupler to join both. Depending on the size of the intake or air box opening, yiu may need a coupler that goes from one size to another. i think this was a 3" to 2.75".

      Right now I'm using a regular 10w-30 oil for the transmission, and using a part-synthetic 10w-30 oilfor the engine. You can use Honda MTF in the transmission if you prefer to do that instead of regular oil.

      In your hydraulic transmission I would use the Honda MTF instead if it was my car. The 10w-30 or 40 are fine, but the MTF was developed shortly after your car was produced.

    hey man I recently bought a 91' civic DX hatch with 21,000 original miles, I know a holy grail of a find ha but it sat for quite awhile in an old woman's garage, the alternator is the original and its quite weak and on its way out, I'm planning on replacing it with a hi output alternator but the factory alternator looks like a real bitch yo replace, any pointers on replacing it if you've done one in the past?? thanks and that's one sweet EF hatch you got

    • @GarageBuiltHondas
      @GarageBuiltHondas  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Brandon Huntsinger It's not difficult. I usually pull it down through the back and turn the wheels left to move the axle away from the crossmember. You may need to take off the brackets to get it down that way. It's been a few years since I've had to replace an alternator on these cars. Why the high output? it's still going to be stock, correct?

      @brandonhuntsinger4221 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have a 2008 ex what type of transmission fluid would you suggest for a smoother shift?

    • @GarageBuiltHondas
      @GarageBuiltHondas  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would suggest going with the Honda Fluid. Are you having issues with your transmission not shifting smoothly? Do you have an auto or manual?

    • @CazYung
      @CazYung 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Jon Widmer its a manual. but it seems to be losing a smoother shift between 2nd-3rd. should I replace my clutch with a higher stage clutch or try using a thicker fluid?

    • @GarageBuiltHondas
      @GarageBuiltHondas  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Zac Roberts You may have a problem with your transmission experiencing some wear now that it's getting a little older. Do you punch it fairly often and make high rpm shifts? Or just daily driving?
      You could try some pennzoil synchromesh. I have read of many people using it and it would help transmissions that were having problems with grinds in high rpm's and just an overall smoother feeling. Possibly look up Amsoil. My buddy with a 9th gen just a little newer than yours was talking about it with a few of his friends saying it also is a good fluid for these transmissions.

    • @CazYung
      @CazYung 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Jon Widmer its a daily car with some bolt ons and every once in awhile I'll do high rpm shifts. but I'll give those a shot first before I replace the clutch. thank you so much for responding. Looks like you overfilled the transmission alot when fill bolt was leaking out so much

    • @GarageBuiltHondas
      @GarageBuiltHondas  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's because more than 2.1 quarts were added and the rest leaks out the bottom of the fill hole.

    How do you check the trans fluid level? When it’s hot or cold?

    • @GarageBuiltHondas
      @GarageBuiltHondas  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can't on these older manual transmissions. You fill it up until it starts leaking out the fill hole and you're done.

      @@GarageBuiltHondas doesnt the car have to be level like on all 4 jack stands?

    • @GarageBuiltHondas
      @GarageBuiltHondas  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's not necessary *edit* you can actually lift the pass side higher if you wish then just add the required amount for the trans. 1.8 for D series and 2.1 for B series.

    ^^You use Motroil? Why not MTF3?

    • @GarageBuiltHondas
      @GarageBuiltHondas  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +CivicNigga I was using MTF but wanted to get back to using 10w30 which is what these old cable transmissions were specified to use in the owners manuals. Honda MTF wasn't around yet when these cars were made. My transmission wasn't feeling as smooth as it once was and I wanted to see if it would make a difference. So far I cannot tell, I think my clutch is getting worse or the transmission itself is just getting worn out.

      Ok thanks, now I know! Yes the old EF has 10w40 or other Engine Oil in the Gearbox.

    For the civic ex vtec 96 you can use that same oil? for the tranny

      You should use Honda MTF as that's what's specified for those models.

      @@GarageBuiltHondas okay so I'm reading his comment and im wondering. Is it not bad to use motor oil instead of transmission oil? I have a gsr and need to change the tranny oil and have read people using motor oil but I feel like they are different. Is there any specific reason you use motor oil instead?

    • @GarageBuiltHondas
      @GarageBuiltHondas  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Honda MTF wasn't around until like EG-s and DC's came out. For the 88-91 chassis, motor oil was the lubricant used in these transmissions and specified in the owners manual.
      For your car, get Honda MTF.
