- John Howard presents--root root root for the Padres! In this News 8 Throwback special, we dive deep into the history of the San Diego Padres from their early days in the Pacific Coast League to MLB years. Historian Bill Swank provides a history lesson in 2003, and from there we showcase championship seasons 1984 and 1998 when they made it to the World Series. When they were down three games to the Yankees, Larry Himmel wrote the most inspiring poem to lift our spirits. Other highlights include: 1978 Old Timers game, 1979 opening day, 1980 road trip, opening day 1984-1989 review, a Tim Flannery story about the love of the game, and a look back at the extraordinary career of Mr. Padre, Tony Gwynn.

Back when social media and smart phones didn’t exist. When fans would focus on the game. Also Fireworks and cheaper food. Also the blimp and planes towing banners. Also skywriting happened over San Diego sometimes over the old jack Murphy stadium.
For several season the Beach Boys would play after 1 game a year. Not a great concert venue but we enjoyed it.

Also San Diego has the best weather year round. New York has crappy weather with hot humid summers and cold snowy winters. This is why May and September are the only 2 good months in New York City. San Diego has great weather every month. Never too hot and never too cold.
Plus we don't say stupid things like "...My Ma makes da best spaghetti in da whole neighborhood...."
We don't brag about being "from da old neighborhood"
We don't play "stickbawl in da stweet wit Tony and Vinnie..."
We don't go to weddings in jogging suits or marry our best friends sister.....!

I’ll summarize without watching: A franchise that can’t decide on its identity. Are they brown, yellow, Orange, red, or navy blue? Are they pinstriped or not? This matters because it means that in 50 years, San Diego has never been good enough to lock down an identity that people can grab onto.
Dawg are you a supporter or not? It’s not about all that identity bs. You’re either a fan or not don’t matter the color of the jerseys or how good they are. It’s about being a FAN! This is about fond memories that the padres have brought to SD so stop hating you buzz kill!!!!!
