This is an important topic. We need to advocate for ourselves. I thought I had a UTI, came back negative. Went back several more times, I final spoke up and said if this is not a UTI, than it’s something else. Turned out I had an ovarian cyst the size of a grapefruit, pressing on my bladder. Urogynogologist said it probably was growing for 10 years. Thankfully was benign. Please listen to your body and speak up.

I hate it that we also have to be our own diagnostician these days. I've had several experiences recently where my doctors kept failing to find the cause s of medical problems.
Did a lot of research, reading from a number of good medical sources etc.. and actually diagnosed the problems on my own. Went to the doctors with my self diagnosis, and got the problems solved.
The thing that made me uncomfortable was that two of the problems were actually simple and common. Scary.

I know what you mean. So glad I saw this video cuz I had four children by C-section but you still get a lot of pressure over there and you still dilate can you still carry your baby for 9 months, anyway I'm 62 and have been use pads for 20 years.
Anyway about us having to tell the doctors what's wrong with us is sad but true 😔

So, have suffered/dealt with PF issues most of my adult life - no kids, but endometriosis with several laproscopic surgeries, to clean up adhesions...only to build up again. If you're able to find a great pelvic floor physical therapist...worth their weight in gold! Trouble is finding one....and those who used to take insurance, switch to private pay - insurance companies (my opinion based on experience), are not treating women's health, in this regard, seriously...and reimburse very little to the therapist. My uro-gyno is a huge fan if this treatment. Low risk/very high rewards. In Europe, after a woman gives birth, pelvic floor pt is part of after birth treatment. Kudos to them!! ❤

True- if this were a male issue it’d be paid for but I’ve had issues just getting info. I’ve had big babies- did my job- now the health system doesn’t care about me. Just trying to get a dr talk about options challenging. Kegels just don’t do it.

Sharing that it is a good idea to have these conversations with our elderly moms. My mom was getting recurring UTI’s. I could not believe her Dr had never recommended an estrogen cream to treat vaginal atrophy. Her days were miserable because she got up 4 times a nite to pee. Ughh! I have to mention my experience with a pelvic floor specialist- I knew that I couldn’t be constipated because I eat clean and I know my fibre intake at all meals. After examination, she told me I had a prolapse and I needed to get a stool stool - which you put both your feet on and it would elevate your knees up- while going for a bowel movement - picture doing an actual squat while on the toilet. Then prolapse would go down and everything would come out much easier. And it worked - I said to myself- there are so many women that probably have the same issue. I wish a lot more women would know this . Well thank you for the chance to let people know about this very easy fix ❤️

I went to my doctor at the time to talk to him about this stuff. He threw his hands up in the air, told me to go home and get my hygiene in order and book a phone appointment. It was very degrading. I went to the walk-in clinic the next morning and got diagnosed with a prolapsed uterus.

I said to my gyno something doesn't look right down below and feel right. She didn't even acknowledge my comment. Because of the frequency of utis my pcp sent me to a urologist and after several years my urologist decided I needed to see a bladder specialist out of state. I have 3 types of prolapse going on and will have to have surgery to fix this. This I found out yesterday, 😢. In a way though I am relieved to finally get some answers as to why I get chronic UTIs and suffer from constipation constantly. I'm also relieved that the bladder specialist is not sending me to an another specialist .

Such an important topic! Our youngest (3) was born with bladder exstrophy she had a 15 hr-7 part complex surgery to repair and move her pelvis and organs around-we have to be diligent with trying to strengthen pelvic floor so she hopefully never has a prolapse/undoes her complex surgery. Her pelvic floor was basically “created” bc she didn’t have one. She’s already in PT for pelvic floor, they want to start strengthening from the start now bc they’ve found waiting until adolescence has shown to be pretty ineffective so her urologist/ortho recommends starting asap. So far it’s fun things like climbing up steps, picking up and carrying metal food cans around, things like that. Thank you so much for the wonderful guest, so much helpful info!!! This is one of my biggest worries for her..

I think waking up in the middle of the night to pee can also be related to anxiety and/or ocd tendencies.I normally wake up in the middle of the night just because that’s my sleep cycle, not necessarily because I have to go to the bathroom. But as soon as my brain turns on it automatically goes to any problems that I can focus on. I always end up thinking about whether or not I have to pee and then obsessing about it until I just get up and do it so that I can fall back asleep.

This video has touched on a lot of health issues of the bladder and all things in that area. I wish the Dr. or Mel had brought up Interstitial Cystitis. I suffer from this. I had one child, No issues. I was able to not have to pee for hours. I didn't even drink much liquids. At age 43 I suddenly went into the bathroom to pee. I got up and went out of the bathroom only to feel like I never even went. So I went back in to go some more. When I left the feeling of having to "go" never stopped. I talked to my fiancé's babysitter and told her what happened. She said "Oh, you must have a UTI and explained it to me. I had never had one. So I went to get tested at my Dr.'s and it wasn't that. To wind this up, it turned out a urologist at one of Boston's big hospitals told me (after putting me under in an operating room to look inside the bladder that what I had was IC. Many women suffer with this. It was never mentioned here. You can have severe frequency and pain or one or the other. For me it was frequency. So it limits things I can do because I do have to go enough times to make sure there will be a bathroom near by. If you have urgency, or pain in the bladder, check with a specialist. You may have Interstitial Cystitis.

Thanks for this, all very useful info. I agree with comments below that a follow up video specifically about pelvic organ prolapse especially after menopause would be very welcome. Lack of estrogen causes ligaments to stretch and organs start to descend. It can be scary as I've recently found out! It's more common than I ever imagined because it's not talked about. I'd love a video to explore this.

I was miserable with nightly sweats. I went through menopause naturally. Had years of Botox injections until the procedure was no longer effective. Had surgery for the Axonics implant device. Have been using the device for 3+ years. Still have leakage and accidents but not as frequently. Thanks for the open and educational discussion. I do not feel alone. Nancy G. From Chicago 20:51

The notion of a flawless marriage or relationship is a myth. There's no set formula for success; what works for one couple may not work for another. Thanks so much Mel for bringing this issue into a deep discussion that so many women secretly deal with! My brain says I have to pee and my uretha says, "okay lets go immediately". I was told it was anxiety induced, so meditate. Yes, this started during covid. Going to a chiropractor helped a lot, but not covered my insurance, it got too expensive. I went to a pelvic floor therapist, and that area was strong. She suggested less water, and to pay attention the FIRST time I realize I may have to pee, just go to the bathroom and not wait. I didn't realize it, but I do tend to wait because "I'm busy". I did go to a urologist, and he said I didn't have a UTI... duh, I know that. He told me to go back to the chiropractor. It's exhausting finding the right fit with someone who can help. I think this video has so much information to help us in a positive, successful direction! Here's hoping! Please do more on this topic 😄

Incontinence, tissues bulging out of the vagina, chronic constipation, fecal incontinence, and pain with intimacy are all symptoms of pelvic organ prolapse, the biggest secret in women's health. POP is a common condition women are rarely informed of or appropriately screened for during routine pelvic exams. Childbirth and menopause are the leading causes of POP (many others compound risk for all women), and it impacts an estimated 50% of women. POP has been medically documented for nearly 4,000 years, but we're still not talking about it out loud effectively because the word vagina and vaginal health remain highly stigmatized. Ridiculous, health is health. Women suffer in silence for years, sometimes decades as Mel indicated, and that needs to be addressed in healthcare systems.
Women need to get vocal to shift the status quo just as occurred with breast health which used to be highly stigmatized but we no longer bat an eyelash at. Every voice matters. Thank you Mel for shining a light on women's below-the-waist health needs. The next significant revolution in women's health is a whisper away.

I feel a lot of helpful information was shared but was a bit incomplete. There are several pelvic organs that can prolapse due to a weak pelvic floor and the solutions are different depending on which organs and how much prolapse happens. I have pelvic organic prolapse (mostly bladder, no uterus prolapse, some bowel) due to a weak pelvic floor which only happened after menopause and my gynecologist said it was most likely due to having 2 forceps deliveries plus the decline of estrogen in menopause (decline of estrogen leads to less strength in muscles, ligaments, skin thickness ... ). My bladder was ballooning out of my vagina when I stood upright. The solutions in this podcast were only briefly mentioned - it would be nice to have more explanation of the choices available. In my case a pessary was the solution, surgery would have involved installation of a mesh to hold the bladder in place which is often not fully supporting the bladder and the mesh can lead to discomfort during sexual intercourse. The pessary holds the bladder up and is high enough to not interfere with sexual intercourse and, amazingly, I can't feel the pessary, I don't even think about it. I am 66, I do have to apply topical estrogen to the vagina 2 times a week, it is a low dose and it helps with vagina skin health. When I first went to the gynecologist, he said my vagina skin was very thin and could be prone to damage by the pessary. I believe if the uterus is the prolapsing organ, surgery is the best choice - removal of the uterus. As bladder removal causes a lot of complications and inconveniences, a pessary is the best choice for prolapsed bladders and surgical installation of a mesh is also a choice. Perhaps you could do another interview with Dr Rena discussing various conditions caused by a weak pelvic floor and their solutions. 60% of women over 60 have weak pelvic floor issues. Mel, you mentioned you had a surgery and have a sling, I don't know what that is or what it does.

Wild yam and Maca root. But you can get your Ob/Gyn to prescribe it for you. I believe that your estrogen is too low, post menopause. I have to take them for the rest of my life as I no longer have ovaries, but estrogen is what helps with all of that and doctors don't understand menopause. Wild yam is known as Menst in the pharmacy, and is progesterone, the Maca is the estrogen. I take then together for balance. A menopaus dr. said that we have estrogen receptors all over our bodies as women. So at menopause the estrogen drops way low. I know from personal experience that this causes hot flashes, night sweats and dry vaginal, and the bitchies. Get your hormones and feel better. I take the over the counter from a healthfood store, but you can ask your doctor about it too. I just didn't want to take Pregnant horse urine. Pregnant horse, having a baby, something that I never can, I went with plant based. I had everything out due to horrible horrible endometriosis.

For my own experience, it began to loose bladder control a few years back, say 4 years ago, so I began researching and discovered that since I sleep on my side, my muscles between my shoulder blades would tighten up in knots. This makes the pelvic floor too weak as the muscles don’t work while in knots. So I found a knobby foam roller to help me release knots after waking up in my hamstrings, lower back, and shoulder blades and I haven’t had leaks with my bladders since using the foam roller. It’s been such a valuable resource for me to help myself.

IT'S are serious business. If left untreated to long, it can quickly turn into sepsis.
One friend waited to long to get UTI treated. Turned to sepsis and her organs started shutting down. She was treated just in time. And recovered.
Another friend was in hospital for the flu. Started getting better. He talked on the phone with his sister and told her he was feeling a lot better and would likely be released in 2 days. He said he felt like he had a UTI , so told his nurse.
His sister in law called the next day saying he died! Turned out the UTI wasn't treated, it turned to sepsis, and he died overnight!
As we get older we are much more likely to have this happen.

I also had a very traumatic first birth experience that not only included forceps but my bladder being pushed out in front of my daughter which they had to drain the bladder (the nurses refused to catheterize me which caused my bladder to be so full the baby’s head pushed it out), push the baby back up, push the bladder back into place and then use forceps to help deliver her. I had to have vaginal packing for days to keep my bladder in place and was in excruciating pain for months after. I ended up with uterine prolapse and also interior and anterior prolapse which caused me to have to have a hysterectomy at 48. I begged two different doctors to try something else and they told me there was nothing else that would help but the surgery. Since the surgery I have had constant recurring UTIs (which have finally been helped by Aloe Juice), several intestinal blockages, almost constant constipation, and leaky bladder that I often cannot control anymore. Sorry for the overshare but I wanted you to know you’re not alone and also to thank you because I didn’t realize that this all came from that original delivery. I live in Nassau Bahamas.
I spoke with about 5 different doctors within the last 5 years about over active / leaky blader, none of them were able to speak to the situation nor gave me any advice in reference to it. I never study health or medication
But i know that it is not normal to have to pee 3 to 4 times every hour.
    Thanks for the information.

Can I recommend hypopressives? Alice on TH-cam is great. I have gone from always needing a pad to not wearing one at all. I was peeing every half an hour but can go nearly two now. These have worked much better than kegals for me. It can take a few months to see the results but for a 15-20 min daily investment i have my life back.

What worked for me was totally eliminating sugar and processed foods

@@GailHiles sugar addiction is real. It will be hard, but it is possible. Focus on whole foods. After your body makes it through the withdrawal, it is so much easier and so worth it for whole body health

Thanks you, for all your advice. I have a problem with my bladder. I am 80 years old and have had an overactive bladder for year. Also had a long birth 0f 36 hours with my first daughter and then 18 with my second daughter. I was on HRT for a ling time. Started menopause at 37 years old. Actually thought I had a terrible disease. I just wanted to crawl up and sleep. It was aweful. My bladder was the start of my troubles. Now I am back on HRT and Vagifem. Use the patch 100mg Estradot. It is not perfect but better than without HRT.
Thanks uou for all your interesting information.

Can c-section scar cause urinary frequency especially at night every 1-2 hours or even every 30 mins some nights?

I am the opposite. I had learned to hold my pee so long. That I had to relearn to empty my bladder totally. I will pee then have to sit a bit and pee more to empty my bladder. Feels like I have like two bladders. No problem but like I said I had to learn to do this. I know it was because I held it in over time .

I wish someone would have told me about the importance of pelvic floor health. I'm 62, no kids but developed a bladder prolapse. Even with a pessery I still leak.

Thank you. At 77 i definitely need to see a Dr, can you recommend a Dr in South Africa. 4 children normal births, no complications. Now I have a think, a bad, prolapse, also need to pee, and often don’t make it to the toilet. Hoping you know of a Dr I could see, that like you, have a passion to support woman.

Also Try hypopressives, it’s a form of exercise that helps to strengthen the muscles that support your pelvis floor. Doing them daily has been a game changer for me. I dont have to wear incontinence pads any more. I hope you find a doctor that listens and helps you but I think we can do a lot to help ourselves. I have learnt them from a lady called Alice on TH-cam, they take a few months to really work but so worth the investment of time. I’m 60, btw, was leaking very badly before i did these exercises, kegals didn’t work for me.
