My first taste of Roxy, early in 1974. Love this album "Stranded"
Nice Led Zeppelin t-shirt. When I was in high school I use to carry a briefcase, with Led Zeppelin and Roxy Music stenciled on the top, on the left and right of the handle. Imagine that. A black kid into those 2 bands. They were my favorite Rock & Roll bands. They really opened the door to a lot of music that I wouldn't have gotten into without hearing them 1st.
I love this song. Like your reactions. I think you were right on with the lonely guy longing for the girl that has him lovestruck....Chris is tough on the dogs. Love te his visceral facial expressions.
Stranded was the third album . Eno the innovator had departed . Allegedly Bryan Ferry and Eno disagreed on which direction the group would go but others say Eno just was a studio body and didn’t like playing live or touring . With Stranded it shows Bryan Ferry flexing his muscles and showing what a genius he was . He added more romanticism to Roxy Music but still kept the innovation and broke molds .

Ferry's early song-writing lyrics were up with the best in the world, you have to not only listen to the actual song but also analyse the lyrics to get a fuller meaning of this great artist's work! This takes time and effort but is worthwhile to capture the wonder of his work. This like many of his songs is about yearning after lost love...
You may have noticed a pattern with their album covers. They all featured stunning women. Many of these were internationally acclaimed models.

We did Editions Of You 2 months ago. We're going to have to go back though. We're not sure we have that in our memory yet. In fact, we've been so busy that we've not looked at the videos except to edit them for a couple of months now. Time to enjoy these a bit more.

I think analyzing Ferry's truly brilliant lyrics at the time is very difficult as one-off listen. They are complex and very involved. Best to concentrate on the brilliant musicianship and vocal performance. This song is just plain beautiful and one of the bands best. Songs in a similar vein are Strictly Confidential and Beauty Queen form the previous album.
You are right. Chris Thomas said Ferry was the best British lyric writer of the 70s.

I didn’t know that the smashing pumpkins covered this song
...and another thing. Most of their lyrics, and others of that time and a little after, leading up to the like of Cocteau Twins vocalist, and a group called Dead Can Dance's vocalist (who Cocteau Twins helped to get signed on their same label) I didn't get the full meaning of the lyrics. I think of them more like abstract art. I think that's a good way to look at them. You don't necessarily get everything in the 1st hearing, or even the 2nd or 3rd. Led Zeppelin's music used to be good at that. You could listen to it months or years later and hear things you didn't hear before. It's refreshing.
