  • Bead- or sand-filled shooting bags can be surprisingly expensive. Here's how to sew your own for use at the range or in the field.

I made this shooting bag and the result was great. I did not have a sewing machine, so I did it by hand and the results were great. Things I did different:
    1. Used anti-fray liquid on all cut edges.
    2. Added two small squares of fabric to the inside of the bag where the handle is sewn to the bag (for reinforcement).
    3. When sewing on the last end, I inflated a balloon inside the bag so it would hold its shape and not flop around, then I popped and removed the balloon when I got o the last 2".
    4. I sewed the last 2" with black thread. This way I know which thread to cut if I need to add/remove bag fill.
    5. I used BB-sized plastic pellets/beads from a crafts store for the fill- I did not want to use food-based fill.
The project was enjoyable, the bag came out great, and it is a great tool to have at the range. Thanks for a great video.

I love it! You really did an expert job on your bag. I had gone to Hobby Lobby in search of something I could use for this purpose and found a very heavy canvas backpack for ~7bucks and bought some heavy nylon thread. I did not too much in the line of modifying the pattern and wound-up filling it with blasting sand and sewing it up. I just wanted something large, heavy, and stable for my PRS/benchrest rifle and blasting sand is really stable media. Its a good bit clumsier than your nice job, but it works. Kudos to you!

Make a shooting bag out of jeans without ruining the jeans...
Turn a whole pair of jeans inside out... gather one leg at end and use plastic the to close end... Turn goodside out and roll up other leg and stuff everything into the off leg leave some room to the off and have a flower bloom top after securing top... Holding vertical rest rifle on top of bloom to keep from scratching barrel

Why not simply use your backpack as a front rest? Thats what I do up here in Alaska...a bag for the rear rest to squeeze for elevation.

When you shoot the Magnum with that, the hood of the car will dent...
