  • Last month, I attempted something new. A five day water fast in the desert. No food, no coffee. Just water. Here's how it went..

    Hey :) I’m Christian Schaffer, and I’ve lived on the road full-time since May 2018. This journey began in 2013 when I left the corporate world to build my career as an outdoor adventure & travel photographer. As a semi-minimalist, I eventually decided to donate/sell most of my belongings and move into my 4x4 Nissan Xterra. After 14 months of SUV living and falling madly in love with the open road - I bought a van and hired a team to build it out. Van life enables me to experience and document the beauty of our natural world on a whole new level, all while having my home and office nearby. My hope is that by sharing my own personal highs and lows along this (sometimes) wild journey, you might be inspired to hit the road or spend more time outdoors. Maybe one day I'll see you out on that open road 🚐

    Hi! I just discovered vanlife videos and I figured out why your's are so different from the other vanlifers. Your videos are calm and relaxing. Some vlogs feel like they are always "on" and having to be loud and entertaining. Your videos are peaceful. And you are talented; love the videos and music.

    You're doing great! ☺️👍 A good way to do fasting is to make preparations: eat only fruit for a few days, then drink only juices for a few days, and then start fasting. I always do like this. Another good tip: when you feel bad - take a small piece of Himalayan crystal salt in your mouth - this will remove the symptoms of detoxification.

    • @ChristianSchaffer

      I disagree with this way of fasting preparation. The fruit sugars and juices will only make your fasting regiment more difficult because of carbohydrate withdrawal. High fat and protein on the last meal before you start your fast is the best imho.

    Christian ~ You are to be Honored and Recognized for taking on the challenge of your fats, and especially sharing your experiences about it with everyone! This is something everyone might seriously consider given the laundry list of health benefits that take place. Too many think they will starve? But in Truth we can go for extended periods of time without food (weeks!). Our bodies will enter into "Ketosis" (burning body fat for fuel) and begin "Autophagy" (cleaning out old and damaged cells) as well as the detox you overtly experienced... I personally recently did a two week fast and was surprised the amount of energy that was experienced. Yes! We have been socially conditioned into a dysfunctional relationship with food by our culture. And you are helping to plant seeds in many who could benefit by your shared experiences... Well done! 🙏

    Really enjoyed your take on the fasting and your perpective of focusing on minimalism. Especially during the pandemic, it has caused me to shift my perspective on what is important and slow down, really see what is around you, take more pictures of flowers, tell your friends and family you love them, focus on mindfulness and being present. I feel like this is what you were doing here and it is inspiring. Love the scenery as the backdrop of it all!

    Have done several 3 day fasts over the years, and this video has been a reminder to do one soon. The stages one feels as the time passes is fun. At some point exhilaration always comes on, and it feels great physically and mentally. Usually late on the second day and early in the third day. In the end, though, it is always wonderful to eat that first food again.

    When I was way younger (I'm 71) I used to fat 15 days every 6 months and I had my sprots activities at the same time (karate and squash: 3 hours a day). So, don't be afraid with 5 days of this experience it's not a lot. One thing I want you to know from me (and I know we're all different persons) after day 3 or 4 I was no more hungry and I was feeling as strong as ever and every day a little more. This was fantastic to eliminate all toxins and old bad minerals we carry in our blood.
    FYI I didn't start the first time with 15 days. I started with 3 days and added one more day every 6 months. And this for about 12 or 13 years. But as I said, I was younger and in a very good shape. I never did more than 15 days in a row and... I was only have water and... coffee. I'm french and I love strong coffee. That has never been a problem. Sometimes a little shaky and in those moments, I was having long series of squats and pumps and the shaking was over when I stopped moving hard.
    I'm only telling this to say to you that you've been very prudent and this is perfect.
    I just discovered your channel and I love your van ;)

    The headache is due to caffeine withdrawal. I quit coffee for about 6 months, last year. The headache really only lasted 1 day for me. When you fast, you need to consume some salt. Yes they villainize salt but it's an essential nutrient for humans, and if you're not consuming any you'll become depleted. You can add some to your water or you can just put a small pile in your hand and eat it that way. If you don't you're really going to feel like dooky. People new to Keto can get the "Keto Flu" which is actually a lack of salt.

    • @ChristianSchaffer
      @ChristianSchaffer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      First- props for eliminating coffee for so long. I’m hoping to do the same at some point 💪🏻 Second - really good point about the salt. I did drink hot water every night with a teaspoon of salt but I didn’t include that footage since I’m not really sure what best practice is there. After three days, it started to taste like vegetable broth to me which was nice, ha

      Just a tip that is really VERY important, Pink Himalayan salt is what’s best to use from everything I have learned. It has the 84 trace minerals needed by the human body. Congrats C , great video as usual.

      @@ChristianSchaffer I second the salt! A drop in your sodium level can also cause severe headache, fatigue, and worse symptoms. Suddenly drinking nothing but water (or drinking abnormally large amounts) puts you on the trend to developing hyponatremia (low sodium). Sodium is truly vital 🙂

    I did the 10 day cayenne pepper and lemon water cleanse when it was popular back in the day. Not so much for the cleanse but more for something to do with my housemate at the time. The hunger was not an issue at all but what was crazy for me was that I missed the simple act of eating. Chewing the food, smelling the food, and tasting the food.

    Green tea is sooo good during detox and a fantastic place to start if you need caffeine without the jitters. And it has a ton of antioxidants, poolyphenols, and L-theanine amino acids that relax and super-detox you at the same time. I always drink green tea when I am doing water fasts or juicing and need a boost of extra energy.

    Had a sympathy giggle at the coffee discovery. Fasting is how most of my friends came to reduce their coffee intake.
    I always up my fat intake before a longer fast to help you through the first 2 adjustment days. Maybe consider experimenting with that a bit for your next longer fast.

    The only caviat with a long 'water only' fast is that a body needs electrolytes like salt, and potassium, without it things can go awry like heart rhythm, rate, and blood pressure issues. I'm surprised you were able to go that long without experiencing any adverse effects, though the light headedness and nausea you mentioned could have been a sign your body needed that chemical balance. Stay safe out there.
    The desert is beautiful, where is this?

      @@kathleenbuckley4338 Indeed. I'm 43 and never had even a sip of coffee for 40 years. Only 3 years ago did I try it, and while I didn't (and still don't) particularly like the taste, the effects it has on me are amazing. A cup of coffee will turn me from a tired, grumpy old f*** who wishes it was Saturday already into an energizer bunny ready to tackle the work day.
      Oh, and also, while I don't like the taste of coffee, the SMELL is amazing (strangely, I find the powder smells better than the beverage)!

    “So I ate all my food I had in the van, didn’t grocery shop……….and drove out into the desert” LOL yeah that’ll definitely help you from eating! My first fast was also 5 days and it was amazing. I think I may have gotten a slight headache 1 day, but overall it was a very positive experience with 12 lbs total weight loss (15 before I started eating again) and I experienced that mental clarity that people talk about and increase in energy from day 2-4. Day 5 I started experiencing a bit of fatigue both mentally and physically but the funny thing is I only got really hungry around day 4 and then it decreased. I never experienced any extreme hunger and thought about extending my fast another day or two but I had to visit my mom and trying to refuse food wouldn’t of gone down well lol. One thing I realized is that for me, I find it a lot easier to just not eat at all vs trying to reduce portions sizes and eating super strict. My subsequent experiences with fasting have not gone as well as my first experience but I’ve learned a lot along the way like including minerals in my water when I’m fasting more than 3 days, staying away from sugar free drinks (which can still spike your insulin and kick you out of ketosis), tips and tricks (staying busy) and triggers (like looking at photos of food lol) and now I can do 3-4 day fasts with ease, feel great pretty much the entire time and still reap the benefits. Everyone’s experience is different, as you said, but I think pretty much anyone will benefit from fasting if its done right.

    • @ChristianSchaffer
      @ChristianSchaffer  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I’m the same - feels easier to not eat at all than to “restrict”. It’s been a year since I did this fast (wow time flies) so I’m thinking I might try again sometime soon. Still not sure I can give up the coffee tho 🥴

    • @dlee6985
      @dlee6985 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ChristianSchaffer I don’t give up coffee when I fast either. Most say it’s fine and won’t spike insulin and kick you out of ketosis. Sometimes I add pure stevia (not the stuff available at most grocery stores, which usually has other stuff that can spike your insulin mixed in it). Apparently pure stevia won’t. But it’s hard to give up caffeine. My work requires me to be alert for 10 hour shifts (forklift driver) so I can’t let fatigue or brain fog set in or else it’s unsafe. If you find it doesn’t prevent you from experiencing the benefits of fasting, then don’t delete it imho. Or try weening yourself off it before you start your fast if you really want it to be a true water fast. Anyways, love your videos! Keep lovin life! Oh yeah, and it’s possible your headaches might’ve been partly caused by mineral/electrolyte deficiency that you would normally get when eating normally. Research what minerals/electrolytes are suggested to take while fasting (I can’t remember off hand) and that might solve or help with headaches next time.

    Just a thought to consider: some cultures actually fast once a month for health reasons; others do it as a reminder of the blessings they have and to be considerate of others; while some do it as a practice of self-denial. I have tried occassionally to do these at different times but haven't done so in a long while. Nowadays, I only eat brunch and dinner after realizing how much nutrition I actually need to stay healthy. It's not the same for everyone. It begins by learning what's right for you.

      So much depends on your usual diet and what your body has become used to. I’m forced to follow a medical diet that would be terrible for most people, but keeps me out of the hospital more than once or twice a year. Fasting could literally kill me, partially because it’s such an extreme from what my body has grown used to over the past 20 years.
      I had chemo a few years ago and spent three days in the hospital at risk for heart failure from low magnesium, to include an example.
