Hey :) I’m Christian Schaffer, and I’ve lived on the road full-time since May 2018. This journey began in 2013 when I left the corporate world to build my career as an outdoor adventure & travel photographer. After 14 months of SUV living - I bought the van I now call home. Van life enables me to experience and document the beauty of our natural world, while also having my home and office nearby. My hope is that by sharing my own personal highs and lows along this (sometimes) wild journey, you might be inspired to hit the road or spend more time outdoors. Maybe one day I'll see you out on that open road 🚐

No matter where you film, I always think ‘Wow! It is so beautiful there!’ You are a phenomenal photographer - you bring out the beauty everywhere you travel. 😊
Agreed! 🙃
Hands down the best eye of ALL travel TH-camrs for picture composition, lighting, and the right filming perspective! Every video is a feast for the eyes. And the ending of this one, with the mountain lion or bobcat screech and the sparse text on black background, was very well done.
For sure
oh my gosh, thank you Sarah 🥲🤍🙏🏻
🥹🙏🏻 @bernhardkaltenboeck9894
You are just one remarkable woman who has given me so much confidence to be a 70 year old living off grid! Thank you and God bless you 🙏
I have considered the same. Is it difficult? Any tips etc?
Please be careful
When I see places such as this, I often wonder what people in the 1800s thought when travelling through with their covered wagons. Absolutely beautiful!
I often think of that too! What an exciting time to be alive
They were thinking “Please don’t let me contract dysentery.”
I wonder what myths, legends and fairytales the natives who inhabited these lands for hundreds of years would tell each other before it was colonialized.
That whole ending scene with the screeching and running around in the dark and panicked rush to get inside - I've had a few dates end like that ...😁😁😁😁
yikes 😂
Wow! You escaped twice!! The angels were keeping you close I think. Glad you're safe and sound. Thanks for taking us on the journey. Your work gives life. Peace!
Was a bit of a rollercoaster 😅🙏🏻
Thank you for sharing all the beautiful mountain shots and i am happy that you are ok
Thank you
You have such a beautiful eye for capturing nature . Love your work.
thank you 🥲🙏🏻
Another wonderful job Christian. Both the visual and the voice over. I can't imagine what the scream of a mountain lion in my ear would do to me. Beautiful van, and you have to be one of the most minimalistic people I have ever known. You don't drag around a lot of extra junk like most of us. Love you and I can't wait to see the rebuilt interior of your van. Be safe. Love you. ❤🙏
I got fooled by a fox once sounding like a female screaming. Fox can make many sounds as i later learned.
I sure hope it was a fox 👀
Yup one has been waking me up the last 3 nights…sounded just like that
Fox for sure, probably a Grey Fox if it was in the Alabama Hills. They hunt at night, rarely see em during the day.
Fox certainly do scream like a woman in distress. 🦊 😊
@@ChristianSchaffer You did everything so well. Maybe next time it might be good to just go in one of the front doors. We lived up in Mammoth for quite a few years. Year around .. pretty magical. Great video as always. You triumphed 🦊
The rock formations/hills were beautiful as was the red-sky sunset (your eye for lighting and composition are magical). The van is nice but I like the lighter interior of your van better. The sliding window and the elevator bed are cool. As far as the "cat drama" at the end of the day, I was glad you kept your cool and made it safely inside (bet you were glad you had brought your portable toilet with you after that experience 😂).
Thank you. As always, you and your work is appreciated.
Gosh, the composing of the scenes - connection of pictures and music... always knock me off. True art and beauty... and the twist at the end is really scary. Thx for sharing
Thank you 🥲🙏🏻
@@ChristianSchaffer My pleasure... I really love the song connected to the record-player... but I found out its not London Grammar - surely because of the (c)opyright issues? Would You mind sharing the artist and name of the song?
I was mesmerized with your images and music choice and deeply wanting to be in the middle of nowhere on a rock looking at the stars. Until the mountain lion screeched at you, then I told myself Nope Nada No way! Bravo to you 😅
Pros and cons 😂👻
You never cease to amaze, Christian!! I so love your honesty and humor. You are an example to me of someone who doesn’t take themself too seriously…yet do everything with excellence! As always, your films are impeccable, inspiring, and an absolute joy! I hope to head out in October, praying to be brave enough to pursue the solitude you have found so life-altering. Thank you for your vulnerability and joy! So grateful that whatever the creature was…it didn’t get you! YIKES! Also, can’t wait to see what changes, if any, you make to your van!
I totally respect that you are protective of your friendships, as you should be…but as a mom and grandma, I am concerned about Mariah. Would you feel comfortable just saying if she is ok? I miss her videos, but more importantly, am concerned about her well-being.
Thanks again for bringing beauty and joy into our lives! Christine
Mariah said in her last video that she was starting an organisation of some kind. (I don't remember what.) She expected to not do uploads for at least six months.
Thanks! I think she was starting a business but said she would be back in 2 months, so maybe i missed something.
Beautiful shots of the Sierras! I grew up in Lone Pine, you just took me home!❤❤❤
Such a stunning place ☺️
Etes-Vous une chat dans la nuit? Oh my!!! Quite scary when you hear a bump in the night. The van is
quite wild with a push-button bed & turn table drawer - Wow! You are living the Van Life Christian -
Merci encore!
Oh my god, that one last story was amazingly scary :-D ! Don't know how I would have reacted. You sure did the right thing trying to look bigger/fiercier. And that door...looks like a horror movie scene... Great video Chris, and what a talent Brett has ! His van conversions look absolutely amazing
You have once again created visual magic with the help of beautiful landscapes. The van looks good, the bed is definitely the selling point from a comfort perspective. Thank God you are alright, that was a scary experience indeed.
🥲🙏🏻
Dido... and Yes, glad you decided to react with animalistic instinct. But then, I thanked God for your safety. 🙏
Its now 16 years ago I had driven through Death Valley in July and was 118 above as a high, into the evening I drove out to the west ( definitely was cooler by that time for a non break down climb out of the god forsaken valley ) and then north, not sure where I stopped that night but was a ways south of Lee Vining somewhere and much higher altitude and a nice night time temp to sleep. I bet it was the Alabama hills that I was looking at to the west as the sun was setting that evening. You commented on it being surprisingly reasonable temp wise west of Lone Pine and I am thinking probably a fair bit higher then the town itself. Never the less just about anywhere is cooler than Death Valley !
Another beautiful episode, Christian. 🙏 Yes, that sounded like a fox shrieking. :-) A mountain lion has a deeper, more throaty, growly sound. And, you will feel their power. That was a gorgeous van! Yours is still my favorite. 💛
I knew someone would know what that was 😂😂
Almost sounds like some kind of bird. I agree, though, not a lion. Cats do that WroOWWR thing.
Glad you are still here ☺️
I really appreciate how intelligent and articulate you are in your videos. Great photography, music and vibe from all your work. Keep it up. You know how to tell a story and you're a real talent.
My grandparents were from Lone Pine, my aunt and uncle lived right over that mound in Alabama Hills - I knew every place you were, did an Easter service right up from your parking spot near the Whitney Portal. my childhood summer visits brought back to life … thank you 🥲
Watching this video makes me want to hit the road again. Thank You for taking me along until I can get there on my own.👍🙏
WOW, you certainly have a way of capturing the beauty of our planet. This video made me homesick for a place that I haven't lived in.
It sure is beautiful out there
Your channel is the coolest one I've ever seen about VanLife.♥️😍
super stunning scenery
I love how often I learn of new music via your videos. The part around ~10 min where you put the record on and then show the clouds and stuff...epic.
ohhhhh those rainbows and rolling clouds and your saturated colors so so so wonderful! thank you.
Thank you. Another stunning movie
The photography and videos are unmatched. London grammar on vinyl was a very pleasant surprise

Amazing work as always by far my favorite van life channel
That is terrifying!!! Glad you are safe. Beautiful views! Thx
Thank you for being there!!!
Glad you're ok.
Love the wood features on the van...
Wonderful images. You continue to amaze us with your eye for the light. You handled the possible mountain lion incident well, frightened but not panicked. Thanks for sharing your Alabama Hills time. We look forward to another chapter in your chronicle.
Thanks for the ride along, the pink sky at 11:54 was beautiful.
SOOOOOO glad you didn't get eaten. Our son lives in Denver and when he goes running or climbing we pray that he doesn't have any animal attacks. So far he has managed to not step on the 2 rattlesnakes that he has encountered. Happy to see tyhat your van will soon be as GOOD AS NEW. Stay safe!
Extremely talented! Absolutely one awesome van you thought through! Living right/peaceful. 👍
Loved that brief shot of the wind on the fringe of the blanket! Nice touch!
The photography in your videos is simply magnificent!
Beautiful video as always, thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching!
OMG heart palpitations!!! Glad you are ok and thanks for the guided tour. The elevator bed is cool.
That was fun. Thanks for tossing up such great videos. It's funny how you kind of feel like a pal, sharing your adventures. Great stuff every time, Christian. Nice to see you doing well. Catch you down the line!

I like the walkway of the van and the elevator bed.
AMAZING scenic images, as always! So healing to behold. Thank you!!:-)
Wow what an amazing video and a scary story. Glad you're safe.
Hey Christian, what an adventure you are living haha, the feeling is that with each video we are venturing further and further to new places. You always bring this adventure in a beautiful, sensitive and real way, it's wonderful and inspiring to watch your videos.
And damn, wow, I definitely wasn't expecting that ending. Until next time and stay safe ❤😊
Glad you made it in one piece. Take care.

Wow so amazing😮
Just always unreal always doing the scenery justice with your shots 👌🏻
Oh my, that mountain lion sounded hungry. Thanks for sharing the beauty of Alabama Hills and the stories of fun, fear, and adventures.
Amazing van, amazing views, amazing cinematography. You go girl. That sound, sounded more like a screeching owl.
What a stunning place 🤩
Christian, great video. We were all wondering how you van was coming along. Stay safe and we will be looking forward to your next video!
Such a peaceful video till the end part 😳WOW!!
That's a tough one with the mountain lion. You have my highest respect for handling this so well 😲
It was so scary 😵💫
@@ChristianSchaffer❤*hug*
You capture so perfectly what I miss the most about living on the road. I love the way you show the beauty of the landscape and sky and the light dancing all over. It truly is the most spectacular thing to see and it happens all around us every single day, but most of us miss it because we’re stuck inside in some office in some city somewhere. It’s so simple and so incredible. I get the same feelings of heartbreaking awe and peace and inspiration from watching your videos as I did when I could see it with my own eyes. Until I can get back on the road thank you for sharing 🙏🏻 And holy crap I almost peed my pants just listening to your mountain lion story. So scary 😳
The road is such a great place to fully immerse. Maybe we’ll cross paths out here someday ☺️
Sweet cinematography, glad you didnt get eaten, stay frosty.
Amazing footage. 👏 ♡
Suspenseful adventures and phenomenal cinematography. Roaring good video.
Thank You for a new Video. The Landescape shots are awesome ❤
Beautiful van, beautiful scenery, beautiful you. Glad your bark scared the big 'kitty!'
Holy moly! this looks like the west coast 😍
I love the Alabama Hills! There were so many older films made there. Thanks for the video!
🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯 this mood is a work of art.
🙏🏻🙏🏻
I have to say that is the BEST VAN I have seen. TAKE CARE and ENJOY ! ! ! !
I’m truly thankful for the time and effort you put into the videos. There’s countless people that you’ve inspired through your storytelling and cinematography. I’m one of them. Two months ago, my daily grind was in the ER back home in Alabama. Last week, I was in Alabama Hills. I’ve seen and photographed some of the most stunning landscapes on my journey. It’s something that I’ll never forget. Keep it up!
