To me this is the perfect bittersweet ending for someone like Mr Freeze. He kept his promise to his wife and beat the odds to save her so he can be at peace. But what he is now and what he has done would keep him from ever sharing a life with her again, and Freeze knows that. His wife having a new life is the reward, his isolation the punishment. To me this should have been the end of Batman TAS Mr Freeze. That final image of a smile and frozen tears of joy is perfect.
Too true, man. After watching the rewrite of Batman and Robin by Fanscription, I can't help but think back to Sub-Zero's ending with Fries, witnessing his wife's recovery and being happy in the knowledge that as long as Nora lives, it's enough for him, given his actions have left him unceremoniously alone.
I disagree I really liked his comeback in Cold Comfort one of THE BEST EPISODES in THE NEW BATMAN ADVENTURES and I also really liked his Day in The LimeLight in BATMAN BEYOND
Supposedly his appearance in Batman Beyond was going to be a blink and you'll miss it joke (Terry gets a drink from the freezer, Freeze's disembodied head is in the freezer vowing revenge, Terry ignores it as "more weird stuff the old man has in his basement "). I'm glad they didn't use this version, Fries is too sympathetic and tragic to be reduced to a black comedy joke.
In my heart, I can never see Mr Freeze as a true villain. Instead, I see him as a tortured victim. He is nothing more than a desperate husband, a scientist who wants nothing but to feel the warm embrace of his beloved wife, Nora, without watching her die. He is nothing if not a poetic character, and deep down, I will always empathise with him. I will always be grateful to Bruce Timm, Paul Dini, and the Batman: The Animated Series (1992) crew for redefining Mr Freeze from a goofy C-lister to a complex, tragic character. I truly hope we see this fantastic character in a live-action reboot one day. Sympathetic, complex villains like Mr Freeze, Xu Wenwu, Zuko, Magneto, etc... are always a pleasure to see. This is such an underrated animated film. Btw I do think Barbara and Dicks relationship in this movie is pretty cute. Though I do personally prefer Dick with Starfire form the Teen Titans, however Dick and Barbara are always an equally sweet couple
No shade to Arnie, but this guy was the real Mr. Freeze from my childhood. This Mr. Freeze was so complex and well fleshed out, with a backstory that will leave you in tears and wondering who you should really be rooting for. Sub Zero will forever be an underrated classic just because of him.
I always wished there was a third DCAU Batman movie showing Batman's origin and first meeting with the Joker in this continuity at as a prequel to TAS, as it started in the middle.
I never really watched Sub-Zero too much but I will say this; that ending certainly melted my heart. It's always like that with Mr freeze stories where he has a touching yet sad tones but beautiful endings. Even his end in Batman beyond was quite touching.
As a kid, I preferred SubZero to Mask of the Phantasm, I loved both, but SubZero was definitely more appealing. That being said, as an adult, Mask of the Phantasm is better (it's actually my personal favorite Batman film), but SubZero is still really good and lots of fun.
I had The Space Jam movie on VHS where it plays a good variety of previews, including Cats Don't Dance and Batman's Sub-Zero (The most chilling trailer ever).... Good Times. 😊
I remember this in detail because the trailer was included in the Batman and Robin VHS tape, I picked it up when it got its DVD release but I’m pretty sure it ended up broadcasting at least once before then
I always take this as the true end of Mr. Freeze and the TNBA as a separate timeline. BTAS made several "endings" for the characters before undoing it in a comic or TNBA, like Harley's Holiday for Harley, House and Garden for Ivy, MoTP for the Joker, and this for Freeze
3:38 Nora wasn't brought back for SubZero. As you mentioned, she was back already in "Deep Freeze", so it wasn't the movie's fault that they couldn't adapt the Freeze story in Holiday Knights. "Deep Freeze" even came out BEFORE the Holiday Special comic book, and was written by Dini and Timm, so Dini shot himself in the foot there.
But that was already done by Batman: TAS with the Heart of Ice episode. I do like how the Harley Quinn series tied Mr. Freeze (voiced by the legendary Alfred Molina) and Nora into its story in S2.
Heyyyy thank you for the reference to my old project, Batman: The Animated Newsletter! I believe it was my co-editor that did the interview with Mr. Kirkland.
I was wondering when this video would be available today. 😊 I would rent Space Jam on VHS back in the day just to watch the first teaser for SubZero. I love this movie almost as much as MOTP.
The reason for Veronica having blonde hair was so she wouldn't get mixed up with Babs, who was also a redhead. This is the only time they've been in the same animated project.
Also, you're doing Return of the Joker next? Uh, okay. It's not like there was a Superman/Batman crossover that was released months after this movie's production or something. :P
Sub-Zero was my introduction to Batman the Animated Series, as well as Justice League which also introduced me to the DCAU. Also fun fact, the cancelled Batman Arkham movie would be revised into the Arkham video game series starting with Arkham Asylum in 2009.
Great movie! It’s a heavy story with lots of character depth and you feel the struggle of Mr. Freeze for certain. I agree that there are a few rough edges to it and it doesn’t perfectly match the movie that came before it but it’s definitely worth checking out! Thank you for sharing this with us! @@marcusyates3044 it was hinted from the very beginning, she was dying of a disease that no cure existed, rather than let go, he held on, which ultimately left her a prisoner of ice and a memento of what was lost between them, for neither of them could feel anything.
One thing that bugged me about this movie is that Nora was previously said to have an incurable disease but now she just needs an unspecified organ transplant to cure her? Why did Victor freeze Nora in the first place if she just needed an organ transplant?
I'm glad you're covering the animated films too in addition to the series. I thought last year's Bat-May was the end of reflecting on that whole animated canon and this is a pleasant surprise to revisit more beyond the original show.
Freeze'a life is truly sad & tragic in the Timmverse/DCAU. He finally had a closing arc, yet he was brought back with new motivations to be a villain and returned in Batman Beyond to die.
Bummer we only got this and Mask of the Phantasm, feels like we could've easily gotten four or five Batman TAS movies, I bet if Mask had done really well we'd have gotten tons of films.

After seeing this film I wanted to know the origin/story of how these two met, where it began and thus I searched for the show.(This film also introduced me to Batgirl/Barbra too). I can still recall my first experience with this film, not fully understanding what was going on since I was very young at the time, but from the emotion I felt from the music score, and the performances I was entranced. This is also my definitive version of Batman as a superhero/character. Why you ask? Cause he goes back to try and save Mr. Freeze, despite knowing that he might not make it back and all of the chaos Mr. Freeze caused. A hero willing to save the villain despite what they have done is something that touched me deeply as a kid and made me believe that this is a hero I could root/support. It always angers me when people hash at this movie and not praise it as much as Mask of the Phantasm. While I will give Mask of the Phantasm all of the praise and thumbs up, but my definitive Batman Animated film will always be Batman & Mr. Freeze Subzero.
I saw this movie long before Phantasm, so the lesser quality never bothered me. Instead, this is my favorite of the animated Batman movies. I really liked how Batgirl/Barbara featured prominently, especially with how little she featured in the original show. (Heck, one episode was bluntly titled "Batgirl Returns", seemingly to announce her appearance after a long hiatus.) For me, this was a great way to end the series, and is a fitting end to Mr. Freeze's arc. I'm not really a fan of The New Batman Adventures, in part because it undoes the bittersweet ending of this movie.
This should’ve been Mr freezes last appearance but no instead they decide to bring him back and bastardized him i honestly can’t put into words how much I hate cold comfort like it was annoying enough because freeze’s motivation made no sense but now I hate it even more knowing it took a nice big sh🐬t on this perfect ending for the character
Sub-Zero > Cold Comfort This is where Freeze's story should've ended. I've never seen him as a villain. Merely a tragic character whose only goal was to feel the warmth of his wife once again. Does it excuse what he did? No but you understand why he felt he had to.
I think it’s definitely the best call to give Freeze a bitter sweet ending. I feel the dlc in Arkham Knight did a great job with this and I liked how it finally gave Nora some agency in the story

I can’t wait for next week. I’ve wanted Walter to chat about that movie for years. That movie is my personal favorite in Batman TAS. The cast is phenomenal.
The thing about Mr. Freeze is that he wasn’t evil. He was a man who was doing what he could to save his wife. Granted, he doesn’t exactly go about it in the best way, but he is a sympathetic character with a noble cause.
I will forever be sad my grandpa gave up the vsh of this film. I loved watching it as a child. If I ever get my hands on it again, I will not let it go.
This is where Freeze's arc should have ended. His main goal was to save Nora, he wasn't really evil. That's why I hate Cold Comfort from TNBA, they turned him into a spiteful asshole who wanted to ruin lives just because his condition didn't allow him to be with Nora.
While I never saw this movie when it came out, I remember it because I confused it for a different Sub-Zero that came out around the same time (namely, the first Mortal Kombat game). It's also funny in hindsight that elements from "Batman: Arkham" would eventually see the light of day as plot beats in "Batman: Arkham Asylum:
The 1st Mortal Kombat game hit arcades in 1992. The newest MK game in '98 had to be 4. What else is funny is that now Warner Brothers publishes the latest Mortal Kombat games since Midway either folded or changed names to Netherrealm Studios (a bit fuzzy on the details).
I've said this before in the Bat-May review of Cold Comfort, but I think that this movie should've been the conclusion to Mr. Freeze's story instead of that garbage episode.
Pretty much my take on it- not as solid as MotP but a solid 'finish' to the Freeze arc, and the best thing to result from Bat Credit Card. The problem with a villain driven by a sympathetic motive is once that motive is completed they have no reason to stick around, so contrivances need to be created to re-ignite it. Maybe they could have focused more on a parallel between Robin and Freeze here since the ultimate choice comes down between Nora's life and Barbara's, with Dick willing to fight just as hard as Freeze to save the one he loves, even risk crossing the no-kill line or losing Bruce's friendship in the process.
Always loved this one, and I think it’s mainly because of the character of Mr. Freeze. He’s menacing, but also a very tragic figure. In another life, he very well could have been someone who changed the world for the better with his science, but circumstances as they became… ~_~
I remember that when I was little, I liked the Batman and Robin movie, but for some reason my memories got mixed up, and I always imagined the end of this movie as if it were the end of the Live Action version, with Arnold Schwarzenegger with him frozen foot and all. I don't know why my memory plays these tricks on me, but it seems that THIS was the version of "Batman and Robin" with Mr. Freeze that I really enjoyed as a child 🤣 I have to watch it again someday
SubZero deserved so much better than what it got. In all honesty, I wish it was the finally the first three seasons of Batman TAS. Would've worked out for the better. That said, this is what we got and it's serviceable. Just wish it could be so much more.
Ohh I love this Batman animated film, I always prefer Batman/Mr. Freeze 'Subzero' more than Joel Schumacher's Batman and Robin movie. 👍🏼 This is another favorite movie I loved from the year of my birth 1998 along with Prince Of Egypt, Mulan, Scooby-Doo On Zombie Island, Antz and A Bug's Life.
Such a good movie here to end Batman the Animated Series, before The New Batman Adventures started. You know? All about how far Mr. Freeze goes to save his wife Nora. Even if it kills Barbara Gordon to get it done. Damn! Again, I feel.sorey for this villain for this series.

@ilove2draw322 It's a pun on today's date and Goku's name. Google it.
Huh!?!?
I remember seeing the trailer for this as a kid!
Super March
Static September
June League
July League Unlimited
I do remember hearing about this as a kid but I don't think I actually watched it until I was older.
Thank you for the video.
If the idea was to include a villain from Batman and Robin, what did they feel about Poison Ivy?
Happy Bat-May! Love you guys! This is SO cool! Can't wait For return of the Joker! BEST film.
🤩 Can't wait for ROTJ either.
This reminds me why this will always be the best version of Mr. Freeze to me.
@6:29 It's the added subtle, but realistic details from just a few simple lines. That can just add a certain 'something' to a scene. Peace All
Always loved this one, and I think it’s mainly because of the character of Mr. Freeze.
He’s menacing, but also a very tragic figure.
In another life, he very well could have been someone who changed the world for the better with his science, but circumstances as they became…
~_~
I haven't seen SubZero but I seen the advertising.
One of my ALL TIME FAVORITE BATMAN MOVIES EVER. Also, I consider Batman Sub-Zero as the very end of Batman: The Animated Series
Mr. freeze, in the snow was very COOL! His story in the show was quite CHILLING!!! 😂😂😂😂
8:40 sing it Kevin!
Found a vhs copy as Goodwill a few years back, I have a semi working player and had to have it.
Hey, that song was in Freakazoid, too!
Just like mask of the phantasm this is one hell of a masterpiece, this probably has freeze at his scariest imo, the writing and cast is great.
SubZero deserved so much better than what it got.
In all honesty, I wish it was the finally the first three seasons of Batman TAS.
Would've worked out for the better.
That said, this is what we got and it's serviceable. Just wish it could be so much more.
Has Walter played that Batman DLC with Mr Freeze?
Ohh I love this Batman animated film, I always prefer Batman/Mr. Freeze 'Subzero' more than Joel Schumacher's Batman and Robin movie. 👍🏼 This is another favorite movie I loved from the year of my birth 1998 along with Prince Of Egypt, Mulan, Scooby-Doo On Zombie Island, Antz and A Bug's Life.
I actually have this on vhs bought it three years ago along with Scooby Doo goes Hollywood and TTA : How i Spent my summer vacation.
Such a good movie here to end Batman the Animated Series, before The New Batman Adventures started. You know? All about how far Mr. Freeze goes to save his wife Nora. Even if it kills Barbara Gordon to get it done. Damn! Again, I feel.sorey for this villain for this series.
