Afterward The Creeper would appear in Justice League Unlimited as member of the extended Justice League, which I'm surprised that the League actually decided to include him on to the team in the first place, sadly all of his appearance are small cameos and and he didn't even get a single speaking role on there, which is a real shame since Creeper is such a interesting character and I would of love to see him interacting with the other League members and even see him get a focus episode since Creeper would be such a wild card.

The Joker feeling genuinely terrified of the Creeper is one aspect of the character that definitely needs more attention. It's quite funny to see the Joker getting a dose of his own medicine by having to deal with a guy he created who is just as (or even more) lunatic than he is. I bet his thoughts as he tried to get rid of him were: "So this is what Batsie feels every time he has to deal with me... Damn, I'm truly an *sshole."

There were two moments in this episode that I always remembered.
The first one is when Creeper effortlessly uppercutted Batman in the jaw without even looking at him, while at the same time flirting with Harley Quinn. That moment caught me off guard when someone else does what Batman has done before.
The other is at the very end, when The Joker, in a state of fear, grabs Batman by the cape and calling the Creeper a lunatic. It's a short and simple scene, but it's not everyday where you see the Joker be afraid of someone else.

The times when Joker has turned to Batman for safety and protection from someone else has always been an interesting plot point and Mark Hamill always makes it convincing with his delivery. My favorite time when joker is at someone else’s mercy has to be “Joker’s Favor” when Charlie Collins confronts a fleeing Joker in an alley with one of the Jokers bombs in hand. Collins is nothing special, by the episodes own description he’s a non descript, timid no-body. And there he had Joker on his knees begging. Even though it a few seconds later turned out to be a dummy and was a ploy by Batman to get Joker to give up all the information he had on Collins and to leave his family alone, I still appreciate it as a point that someone considered a “nobody” came closer than almost anyone else to killing the Joker for good. The creeper, like Collins in “Joker’s Favor”, was another instance where one of Joker’s victims came back to bite him in the ass.

Yeah, Bruce Timm said this. The original concept of Freakazoid would of been a show more like this episode. A more serious, dark superhero cartoon, but with a really goofy superhero who annoys and pranks villains. Basically, a good guy Joker.
While I love Freakazoid, and how it satired WB superhero cartoons of the time, I do wonder what it would of been like if they stuck with the original idea, instead of making it another Animaniacs style variety comedy show. (Though, Freakazoid Season 2 became more focused on Freakazoid and more episodic.)

The girl with Squidward's personality from the clothing store scene was the best part of this episode, being a minor character as memorable as Louis, the sympathetic little guy from the Fleischer's short film "Superman: Destruction Inc.". A girl like her who doesn't care at all about what she sees would be the perfect match for Bruce and other heroes whose love life is a disaster because they have a ton of difficulties trying to reveal to their girlfriends their secret identity.

It also informs the direction and makes him a bit more interesting as something like a parody of those comic book "get buff quick" ads, and a more threatening sexual element.
Not to read too much into the sex, just that, if he was the standard it would just come off as a pervy kid. It's just present in the character without taking over as "his thing" like Johnny Bravo, almost like it stays contained when it's lampshaded as jsut one part of the character.

The new origin of the Creeper at the hands of the Joker, which would later be adapted in the main continuity of the comics, was a truly creative decision by DC. Both characters actually have quite funny chemistry every time they meet. My favorite moment between them occurs in the novel "Crisis on Infinite Earths", in which both lunatics discuss, with their classic cruel banter in between, in front of all the DC heroes and villains on the Watchtower Monitor how the truce between vigilantes and criminals to defeat the Anti-Monitor will be carried out, with Barry Allen opining with utter despair that having the Joker as an ally instead of the Creeper might not sound so bad

I felt so bad for Ryder given that he was Joker gassed and then pushed into the chemical vat SO MANY TIMES by the Joker. Then he gave him the exploding cigar before he winded up down the drain as the vat emptied out.
Kinda had me angry that yet again there was an innocent victim of Joker's madness and why he needed to be put down. I guess that shows how well written the opening scene was to get me that worked up over a character who made a few minor appearances as a news reporter throughout the season.
Then we see Ryder get his revenge on Joker by the end of the episode and I LOVED IT! Even better was Batman coming up with an antidote to help Jack get his life back; we know he decided to be a hero instead given the ending of the episode combined with his appearances in JL Unlimited.

Fun fact: The Creeper was created with the intention to be a heroic version of The Joker.
Also, The Creeper crazy personality and his physical designs (including the color scheme) were used to create the character Freakazoid from the animated TV show of the same name, which was also another show produced and directed by Bruce Timm and Paul Dini.

This isn't true. At least not the first part. Creeper was actually completely sane in his original comics and pretended to be a giggling demon from beyond sent to punish the guilty. It wasn't until the eighties that the character was made genuinely insane.

What a memorable episode! I like the idea of a TV documentary on the Joker; I would watch it for sure! And there was so much else that's stamped on my memory: the return of the Joker's mime-thugs (I love the Three Stooges too, and appreciate that Mo, Lar, and Cur had become less menacing and more silly); Harley vamping it up in yellow custard; both Joker and Harley getting their clothes torn by the Creeper's chaotic attacks; and, of course, Jack Ryder's traumatic transformation, including his attempt to resist the laughing toxin and his mutation into a superpowered and even more insane variation of the Joker as a result of the combusting chemicals. Speaking of torn clothing, I also appreciate realism of Ryder's entire suit disintegrating in the vat, and the idea of him running around in just his underwear and a feathered boa suits his character very well. And I laughed when Creeper kept lusting after Harley even after she nearly killed him, and when Harley bragged about giving him a concussion.
By this point I was pretty much over Batman for a while, having switched my obsession to STAR WARS (which was resurging in popularity because the special editions of the OT had just been released and the prequels were about to come out). But I tuned in to this show occasionally, mostly for the Superman segments since I now preferred the science-fiction style to the crime-drama style of Batman. I missed this episode the first time around, but I did catch it years later; I did see "Joker's Millions" durng the show's original run, and I found that episode just as good as this one.

I really like Tim Drake's character. And yes, like you also said in a previous video, I think Tim would have become the new Batman if Bruce didn’t so strongly forbid him from super-heroics again (though I wonder if he did some super-heroics anyway). I think it's implied in the flashback in Return of Joker, as told by Barbara Gordon, that Tim wanted to be Robin again, but Bruce completely refused.
Also, Tim is really far older than he looks in that flashback from Return Of The Joker. We know those events are the last in the "present" timeline of the DCAU. It happened after shows such as Justice League and Unlimited. So, it's fair to say that Tim Drake was a young adult (17 or 18 years old, I would say) by the time that tragedy happened to him, even though he doesn’t look such. But they aged him up a bit in his Static Shock appearances.
By the way, I highly recommend the DCAU tie-in comics Gotham Adventures. Plenty of Bat-family fun! Batman Adventures Vol. 2 as well. By the way, the writers of that comic, who also worked on the shows, said that they planned to eventually have a story of Tim escaping the Joker, to show that the events we saw in the flashback of Return Of The Joker are not the certain fate of the character, it’s not written in stone.
Ultimately, I recall John Stewart's wisdom in the Justice League Unlimited show, after he discovers that he will have a son with Shayera in the future. He refuses to simply go back to Shayera, he stands his ground about how he believes that the events in history are not written in stone, and he won't let so-called fate decide his life decisions, with the future of his relationship being ultimately left open by the show. While he does go back to Shayera in the Infinity comics, his point still stands: it wasn't merely fate, but his own real strong feelings towards Shayera.
I believe the same philosophy of John Stewart is also how the creators and writers see all of the DCAU shows, films and comics, and also their advice to us fans as well. The DCAU is not meant to have a story clearly written in stone and fully consistent, it was never conceived or planned that far ahead, it always played loose with continuity.
Which of course doesn't mean that we can't have fun trying to fit the pieces together, or at least trying to understand as well as possible all the inconsistencies and points of divergences in the timeline (like how the Aquaman from Superman The Animated Series is drastically different from the Justice League shows). Watchtower Database is a great TH-cam channel for these discussions.

I like the Creeper as a sort of middle ground between Batman and Joker. Growing up this episode gave me a sort of 'channel the madness' vibe, which I never saw again until Soul Eater. The impression that Jack Ryder would be a vigilante going forward, embracing his new state, was a cool idea.

  • @AkuTenshiiZero

I love this character. I don't read the comics so I can't make any comparisons, but based solely on the cartoon I wanted more of the Creeper. I don't think he would have worked as a regular character as that Gotham Knights art would suggest, but I could have seen him show up a few more times. It would have been interesting to explore how Batman handles this deranged anti-hero, and with Bruce Timm and Paul Dini it feels like he was a somewhat more grounded and dangerous Freakazoid. There's something about the idea of a man with a cartoon brain existing in a mostly realistic world that feels both hilarious and frightening, because you never know what he's capable of.
