Superman (also marketed as Superman: The Movie) is a 1978 superhero film based on the DC Comics superhero Superman, played by Christopher Reeve. It is the first of four installments in the Superman film series starring Reeve as Superman. The film was directed by Richard Donner based on a screenplay by Mario Puzo, David Newman, Leslie Newman, and Robert Benton. In addition to Reeve, the film features an ensemble cast including Marlon Brando, Gene Hackman, Jeff East, Margot Kidder, Glenn Ford, Phyllis Thaxter, Jackie Cooper, Trevor Howard, Marc McClure, Terence Stamp, Valerie Perrine, Ned Beatty, Jack O'Halloran, Maria Schell, and Sarah Douglas. It depicts the origin of Superman, including his infancy as Kal-El of Krypton, son of Jor-El (Brando), and his youthful years in the rural town of Smallville. Disguised as reporter Clark Kent, he adopts a mild-mannered disposition in Metropolis and develops a romance with Lois Lane (Kidder) while battling the villainous Lex Luthor (Hackman).

Fun Fact: To obtain the musculature to convincingly play Superman, Christopher Reeve underwent a bodybuilding regime supervised by David Prowse, the man who played Darth Vader in the original "Star Wars" trilogy.

This movie is very important to me. My grandmother was a trumpet player for the Utah Pops and she knew I loved Superman. So she convinced the entire orchestra (not that hard a fight more than likely) to learn the theme song for me at one of their concerts. It was an amazing experience and a core memory for me.
Your grandma loved you very much. Keep her in your memories.

Watching this movie today, I find the scene of him getting the cat out of the tree to be *so* important. Because it establishes something about Superman’s character that gets missed often.
He is not a crime fighter; he is here to help.
If all crime were eliminated, Batman would just stay home. Without conflict, Wonder Woman would be a great diplomat but little else. But there is nothing Superman feels it is beneath him to do. If someone needs help, he’ll do it. Whether it’s dealing with an earthquake or a stalled car on the highway, he’s happy to do what he can.
Man, Superman's scream as he goes to reverse time is still one of the most gut wrenching, raw screams I've every heard in a movie. Always gives me chills.
I kinda want to make it my ringtone and set it full blast and hope someone calls me while im in a grocery store :D

Remember how Snyder did that same scene with him slamming a satellite in front of military officials and telling them not to fuck with him?
In 1985 my dad died....I was 9 at the time. When I finally got around to seeing this movie in the late 80's when VHS tapes became more widespread, the death of the dad hit home way harder than it should have, and left a mile wide crater impact on me, that still resonates to this day.

Movies that feature the death of a father figure have that effect on people whose fathers died recently.
Anyway, I know how you feel. My Dad died in 2005 after a 2-year battle with brain cancer. I was 15 at the time.
Similar to me and the Flash. Even though it's been a few years since my mother passed, the parting scene between Barry and his mother had me tearing up.

To be fair I think most often they're not meant to be excited. They just react to someone else telling them to look up
26:14 as a kid I thought the Earth turning backwards was awful. Years later as an adult I realized that I had it backwards. Superman is not spinning the earth backwards to turn back time. He’s turning back time and the Earth’s rotation reversing is a narrative device to show us that rather than tell us.
Yeah, I was lucky to watch this movie, for the first time, with my dad, who explained the notion of traveling faster than the speed of light, as a theory of time travel. So I never thought he was moving the earth's rotation, but the it was showing him flying faster than light.
If that’s the case he wouldn’t have to spin the Earth forwards, as he does later.
So he’s spinning the Earth backwards. Yea, it’s dumb.

As anyone who's used 'wind up' media, like video or audio tapes, would know. You rewind, often go past your point, then FF back to get where you wanted to.
BUT, Richard Donner actually gave us the answer, showing time being reversed (toothpaste going back in the bottle) in the Donner cut of part 2, which uses the same 'faster than light' approach.
Now, even going back in time doesn't fix the problems. I guess there's implication that he gave himself enough time to get everything right, but it's not explicitly said.

Another Fun Fact: Superman creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster were both delighted with the results of this movie.
And they were nearly in poverty before this. DC gave them some money after news stories about how this movie made millions and they didn't see a cent of it.

Jerry Siegel and Joe Schuster were essentially penniless by the mid-70s. Then one day, I forget who exactly, but some guy found them living in a basement and upon finding out that they created Superman, began a campaign to get them the money they deserved, including on-screen credit for creating him.
Fun Fact: Back in 2017, Richard Donner was being awarded an Honorary Oscar for his filmmaking career. One of the guest speakers was Kevin Feige (Marvel) & Geoff Johns (DC). In his speech, Kevin Feige explained whenever a filmmaker was tasked with a Marvel project, it was mandatory that they watch Superman, as a reminder of the standard superhero movie and the impact of verisimilitude.

Pa Kent's death is one of the most important aspects of Superman lore, and it's one of my chief gripes with Man of Steel. "All those powers and I couldn't save him" perfectly encapsulated why Pa needed to die. In MoS, Clark doesn't learn that lesson. He doesn't learn any lesson.
Pa Kent is alive in Superman TAS. I remember Doug & Rob complaining that they keep killing him in the movies.
Fun fact: The language Kryptonians speak is called *Parliamentary* English.

Christopher Reeve’s performance will always be the best Superman. Even in 3 and 4, he managed to deliver great performances.

Another Fun Fact: Steven Spielberg was offered the chance to direct this film. Producers balked at the salary he asked for. They decided to see how Jaws (1975), which he had just completed, did at the box office. That movie was a huge success, and Spielberg went on to other projects. This year he directed Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977), and the year after he directed 1941 (1979); both which were bested by "Superman" at the box office; so it looks like Richard Donner won this round; but Spielberg caught up later. They would eventually work together on The Goonies (1985).
I think, in his prime, Spielberg would have directed an amazing Superman. The warm hearted schmalz needed was right up his alley. But Donner was clearly the correct choice.
He could still do it today. “Steven Spielberg’s Superman”! I would be down for that! ❤
Also, when Spielberg was offered the directing job again, he stated he would do the film as a musical, which was his polite way of saying no.

Reeve really made Clark taking off his glasses and standing up straight feel like a transformation. He plays Clark and Superman like two different characters he can smoothly switch between which... is exactly what Clark as a character does
Whenever someone makes the dumb joke about how people don't recognise Superman and Clark Kent are the same person, I always point to that scene. It is an amazing transformation.
Christopher Reeve IS Superman to me. Nobody either in animation or live action has ever played the part so perfectly.

Actually, the movie's depiction of Lex Luthor was comic accurate for the time. The whole crooked businessman aspect didn't come about until the 80s.

Another Fun Fact: According to Sir Roger Moore's autobiography, he witnessed Christopher Reeve walking through the canteen at Pinewood Studios in full Superman costume, oblivious to the swooning female admirers he left in his wake. When he did the same thing dressed as Clark Kent, no one paid any attention. Very interestingly, something similar happened with Harold Lloyd: when he wasn't filming movies and removed his iconic round glasses nobody paid attention to him at the point that no one recognized him as the famous actor he was. Lloyd was inspiration for Superman's alter ego Clark Kent, specially in the detail of the glasses to hide himself of the public eye in his civilian identity.

I never once thought that Superman was causing the Earth to spin backwards. He was obviously going so fast that he went back in time. That's why Jor El warned him not to mess with our history. Also, it was a huge effort that he only accomplished because he was so distraught. I still feel weird that everyone else in the theater didn't get that.
He DID. The movie SHOWS him doing it. It doesn't matter if it doesn't make sense to you, he's a super hero.
Running so fast that he either reverses time itself, or actually is going back in time himself. The latter is in fact the basis for the Flash's Flashpoint storyline.

Another Great fact for a really amazing and fantastic superhero movie is: The movie was filming in New York City on the night of the 1977 blackout. The New York Daily News was able to publish despite the blackout, because the film company let the newspaper use their generators. Richard Donner humorously remembers that Geoffrey Unsworth believed he was the cause of it all, due to the amount of equipment he was using.

Lois’ line, “Do you . . . Eat,” was her trying to find out if he (as a space alien) has sex, but then she chickens out. Think about it.
In the lines leading up to that question, she awkwardly asked if all of his bodily functions are normal. He isn’t sure what she means, so she tries to clarify, saying something like, “Well, to put it delicately, . . . Do you . . . Eat?”
She clearly WANTED to ask him something else. Do you get it on, Superman?

- Oh yeah, my ma makes a swell meat pie!

Noel Neill plays Lois Lane's mother. Neill played Lois Lane in Superman (1948), Atom Man vs. Superman (1950) and Adventures of Superman (1952). She appears when the young Lois sees Clark Kent running extremely fast from a train window

Fun fact, Otisburg is now a district in Gotham City, because of the original Superman movie. But why Gotham, isn't that in New Jersey? Why not at the very least in Metropolis? I don't have the slightest idea, I don't work at DC...
My entire life, I’ve always wanted to have a movie projector in my house. To have those genuine big screen reactions I’ve only ever been able to experience at the theater.
During the pandemic, I finally got that projector and built that home theater I’ve always dreamed of.
Superman was the movie I chose to be the projector’s maiden voyage.
It was everything I wanted it to be.
Yeah Jonathan Kent’s death is wonderfully done for several reasons.
1. It takes one conversation with Clark for you to get what kind of father he is. He’s set in his morals, and those morals are strong and positive. He expects Clark to do what’s right, but is good enough to have talks when a moral dilemma comes up, and he just straight up admits he’s unsure about the future, humanizing him. The writing is so good, we get all that in a few minutes.
2. Yes, the devastatingly poignant line at the funeral
3. Superman literally couldn’t save him. It’s not a Tornado, it’s a heart attack. The helplessness is real even for a superhero.
It’s truly tragic what happened to Reeves. He would’ve had an amazing long career as Superman with countless cameos.

My first Superman was Tom welling in Smallville and I gotta say. Seeing the Fortress in this movie and realizing they basically recreated it in the show is amazing to me.
13:58 Totally agree... The way that Reeve deliberately lets his shoulders droop, His subtle change of voice... Its all there! Its like meeting Alice Cooper when he is not on stage... You know its him but at the same time you cannot believe its the same person... As on stage, he is a very different personality!
This movie is so important to me, as it was for many people back then. I watched it so many times while growing up in the 80s and 90s. Reeve reminded me of my father, who died when i was 13. Reeve's unmatched kindness, charm, and warmth always drew me to him. I cried buckets when he died. What happened to him was like something out of a nightmare. It took me awhile to even accept that it happened. I miss him so much. He was a rare gem, not just for his acting. I'll also never forget his role in Somewhere In Time, which is quite a tear jerker with a fantastic score.
This is still the best Superman movie ever made.
This movie is the definition of pure magic and was pretty much the catalyst to a whole new generation of Comic Books Films and Superhero movies that would only gain more popular. Christopher Reeves was quite literally Superman both on screen and in real life, the man truly made us feel like Sueprman was real. John Williams score is masterful and I cant truly do justice to how much of a perfect score he gave that has defined the character
I especially love how this Supermonth is taking place in March, not only is James Gunn's upcoming Superman movie currently being film and the fact that March is also the month of my birthday
I do hope one of these Superman Month episodes is about the Fleischer cartoons from the 1940s because they played a HUGE part in making Superman popular and creating things like his ability to fly.

A Super Fact: 7:44 According to IMDb, that kid also made a cameo in Superman III, Man of Steel and is now playing Lex Luthor in some upcoming Superman animated movies. He's made a career of being in Superman movies.
Superman can actually time travel in the comics. He did it all the time pre-1986 and recently gained the ability back. He does it by flying so fast he breaks the "Time Barrier" which isn't better, but it fits in the world of comics.
In a better story involving time travel (like Flashpoint), there’d be some form of repercussion for changing history. That never happens in this movie.
I think the Flash should come across Superman while they both time travel.
Fun fact: one of the Fleischer Bros. Superman cartoons depicted him fighting a giant reptilian monster...FOURTEEN years before the original Godzilla! Love that you used the Fleischer Bros. theme for the beginning of the video, too!

18:34. Id argue that this version of Lex Luthor is comic accurate, for the time. This movie was out in '78. Lex was still depicted in the comics as an eccentric mad scientist character. His makeover into the Gordon Gekko, shrewd businessman type, came in the relunch of Superman in DC comics that debuted in '86.
I did not know this. I think I like the idea of him being a businessman is more interesting though.
The scene where Clark tries to tell Lois who he is might be the best Superman moment in any movie. You watch Christopher Reeve transform from Clark Kent to Superman and back in the space of just a couple of seconds. It should be the audition scene for any actor looking to play Superman. If he can't pull that disguise off, he doesn't get the part.

Richard Donner was fired from the movie, SUPERMAN 2, after he had a huge falling out with the Salkinds, and was replaced by Richard Lester.
It made $300 million dollars ($1 billion dollars today) against a $50 million dollar budget.
It won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects.
And that 50 million was the budget for BOTH movies, Superman I and II. I think the original budget for both was something like 42 or 45 million, and then when S1 came out and was a hit, they added some to the budget to get II done.

There was plenty that didn't need to be reshot, but they did need a new ending since the original ending of turning back time was stolen to end Superman 1.

Surprised Doug didn't cover the most head scratching moment of the Movie: The Superman drowning scene, yes he has a Kryptonite necklace on but there's not only a ladder but a staircase not far from where Luthor dropped him. Hell, when Miss Tessmacher saves him they only have to swim a few feet to get to the goddamn stairs.
To be fair, he is weak and disoriented. So it was probably still hard for him know how close the stairs were in the pool.

A Super Fact: Casting director Lynn Stalmaster was the first to suggest Christopher Reeve for the title role, but Richard Donner and the Salkinds felt he was too young and too skinny. Nevertheless, Reeve did an excellent screen test that blew the director and producers away. Once he had the part, he underwent a strict physical training session for months, going from 170 pounds to 212 in the period from pre-production to filming.

The timing of this couldn't be more perfect considering Zack Snyder's interview on Rogan days after this where he ranted on why Batman and Superman should kill because they are "Gods" and will be irrelevant if they can't, proving why his movies failed to capture the spirit of Superman.
Superman was dogged by clashes between producers Ilya and Alexander Salkind and director Richard Donner over the film's tone; the Salkinds wanted a more slapstick film, while Donner wanted the film to take itself more seriously. Casting for the title role took a long time to settle on Christopher Reeve (although he was definitely worth the effort); he also didn't get along with Jack O'Halloran, who played Non. Marlon Brando was, par for the course, a pain in the ass to work with, refusing to put in the effort to remember his lines and instead reading them off baby Kal-El's diaper. On top of that, Brando often refused to get out of his trailer until he was provided with a satisfactory breakfast, leading to, of all people, a 16-year-old Cary Elwes (who was working on the film as an intern) being landed with the job of finding out what Brando liked to eat and where to source it from. Finally, there were special effects problems (not that many breakdowns, but a lot of money to make them work), which contributed to the film falling behind schedule - they filmed both Superman and its sequel simultaneously without much of a clear schedule in the first place. The film was a hit, but the lost profits to the Salkinds over this led to Donner being fired before the second movie was completed.

One thing I absolutely love about this film is not only Christopher Reeve but the start of the beginning credits. How the music starts slower, then the music picks up and up and then you reach that high point, hold onto it and then the Superman logo comes in and it's just like "Woah". I don't know why but I love the music building up to the when the logo shows up is my favourite part. There is something just epic about that build up. Then again, it's John Williams which is always a win!!! Or maybe I'm still the same oddball I was back at school.
Johnathan's death pretty much captured what Zack didn't understand about Superman. The purpose of that death was to humanize him. Yes, his dad had told him he was meant for great things(just like in Snyder's and just like in Smallville) however in Snyder, Clark was able to retain that power by choosing not to save his dad. But the way his dad died in the original(and the series) showed Clark that he isn't a god or above mankind or nature(or in smallville's case: fate). Bendis did the same thing in the comics by having Krypton assassinated instead of having a race of superior beings believe they were above nature(remember they're hated by a lot of other space beings because of their arrogance. Some things just don't need to be changed.

I think the scene with Paw Kent and Clark is the most emotionally powerful in any comic book movie. It packs so much into just a few minutes of screen time. It's that moment when Superman is born, when he is infused with his sense of purpose and grounded with humility. I've heard people criticize the scene, asking "why didn't Clark use his powers to try and save Paw", but I think the dialog at the cemetery shows us that he DID try. We didn't need to be spoon fed a scene of Clark racing to a hospital with his dead father in his arms to understand that.
This is gonna be a fun month.

In the 1930's, when the comic originally came out, planes were quite rare, and seeing one would be something you'd point out to the people around you. It would be like seeing a low flying fighter jet today.
Dude…the flying effects were GREAT for the time. The wire work in particular was exceptional, and even to this day, no one has equalled Christopher Reeve’s mastery of that technique.
My very favorite moment when I was a kid, and now, is when he picks up Lois for their date and he takes his glasses off, straightens up, and uses that deeper voice. You truly see all the little tricks alluded to in the comics and see how Clark can pass for 2 people. It was, and is, brilliant.
One Last Couple of Facts: The first baby who played Kal-El, in the flight sequence of the escape capsule, was Elizabeth Sweetman. The filming took place at Pinewood Studios in October 1978, when Sweetman was six months old. She earned 40 pounds per day for four days work, netting a grand total of 120 pounds after agency fee deductions, Several scenes were shot for the movie, but were not used in the theatrical version. Among them are: extended dialogue scenes between Jor-El and his fellow Kryptonians, a scene of baby Kal-El's space pod flying past the Phantom Zone-trapped villains, a scene of a child Lois Lane seeing Clark Kent running extremely fast from a train window, a scene in which Ma Kent tries to wake up a still-sleeping Clark, additional dialogue between Superman and Jor-El in the Fortress of Solitude, a scene in which Superman is pelted with bullets, fire, and ice as he approaches Luthor's hideout, a scene in which Otis has to feed Luthor's "babies" (some type of animal or monster we never see on-screen), and a scene where Luthor attempts to feed Miss Teschmacher to those same "babies" after she sets Superman free. Although not used in the theatrical cut, most of these scenes were worked into the extended DVD versions. All of the scenes, used in the extended version or not, can be found in the four-disc DVD special edition of the film, Christopher Reeve (Superman) does not appear on screen until 48 minutes into the film. However, his voice is heard in the Smallville scenes, as he dubbed Jeff East. Gene Hackman, who plays principal villain Lex Luthor, is not fully seen until just over an hour into the film, The producers wanted Joan Crawford for the role of Ma Kent. Unfortunately, Crawford was too ill to take the part, and died shortly before production began, The Bill Haley song "Rock Around the Clock" is heard on a car radio just before Glenn Ford's final scene. Ford starred in Blackboard Jungle (1955), the film that helped launch the Rock and Roll era by popularizing "Rock Around the Clock". Mario Puzo's scripts proved to be too epic and too expensive, so the team of David Newman and Robert Benton was brought in to hone them down. Benton was committed to directing The Late Show (1977), so Leslie Newman (David Newman's wife) came on board, mainly to write Lois Lane's dialogue. Their re-write was more campy than Puzo's, and even included a cameo appearance by Kojak, the popular television detective, William Friedkin and Sam Peckinpah were offered the chance to direct this film. Making it the first DC film to be selected followed by The Dark Knight (2008) which was selected 2 years later in 2020, Marlon Brando reputedly suggested that his cameo role as Jor-El be done by him in voice-over only, with the character's image on-screen being a glowing, levitating green bagel. When Richard Donner met Brando, the actor proposed that he played Jor-El not as a green suitcase, but as a "bagel." Brando reasoned that no one knows what the people on Krypton look like, but that Jor-El would know what people on Earth look like, and would therefore make his son look human, so he could blend in. A lesser-known example was the scene where Otis tries to take Superman's cape. Actually, I have a theory on Superman "spinning the world backwards"... in that he actually DIDN'T.
He didn't reverse the rotation of the Earth to make time go backwards. He ALONE is time traveling. The Earth and everything going in reverse is just showcasing him going back in time to an earlier point, not him reversing everything back to normal.
According to a time travel expert in the Back to the Future 30th anniversary DVD bonus features... yes, there are "time travel experts", you require energy to travel through time. Getting to the future is easy; astronauts have gone through it.
Going back in time is more tricky, but not really impossible.
So with this in mind, I think Superman just used a ton of energy to go back in time himself to save Lois from dying. He didn't physically reverse the rotation of the Earth or time itself. He himself just traveled back in time. The reverse footage is just showcasing him going back in time.
Which probably does mean there's another Superman stopping another missle.
But he probably went back forward in time so there wouldn't be a double.

This movie is less built on a comic book movie but more built on the 50s epics like "Ben Hur", "The Robe", and more built on the 70s disaster blockbusters like "Airport", "The Towering Inferno". There's no rules, so Salkind's team invented those rules. (And basically clumsily tried to replicate all the rules with "Supergirl" and "Santa Claus" without Richard Donner's commitment to realism.)
I saw this one as a kid in the theater and I can testify that I have never experienced such an electric feeling in the crowd as this theatrical experience. The crowd was SO into it. That first time Superman flies in his Fortress of Solitude towards the camera and then turns, the crowd was on their feet cheering and hollering. They kept doing it too... that first time he becomes Superman in the city and saves Lois and catches the helicopter. It was such a feeling in the theater that day... and this is after seeing Star Wars only a year earlier in the theater! This experience trumped that one! People were so hyped and psyched for a superhero movie and this one delivered. Still my favorite superhero movie to this day... and easily the one with the best musical score. ;-)
Maybe I'm reaching, but the corny scene with the railroad track combines Superman perfectly with him being the 'Man of Steel' and 'More Powerful than a Locomotive' all in one 😄

The Earth turning in reverse is simply a visual representation of Superman going back in time. If we want to argue that going at super speed wouldn’t result in going back in time, fine. But he isn’t turning the Earth in the opposite direction and having that be what makes time flow in reverse. He’s just flying super fast and the Earth’s rotation going in reverse is just supposed to show us time is going in reverse, that’s it.
For all the times Doug when you say “show don’t tell” I would think you would understand/appreciate the film trying to show you time going in reverse.
This WOULD be clear as day that the earth turning is only a visual representation of him time traveling backwards. But then superman slows down, and spins around the earth Forward... Like he's turning it forward again to not keep it still.

One thing I always thought was odd is that Luthor could have had the second missile go almost anywhere, yet he chose Hackensack, New Jersey which is about 15 miles from New York City . . . er . . . I mean . . . Metropolis, where HE is located and we are talking about a high yield nuclear warhead, so you probably don’t want it to detonate within even a hundred or so miles of your location.
Of course, for the purpose of the plot, it had to be in the same city where Miss Tessmacher’s mother lived, but they could have made it Miami or something, like her mother retired there.

I read somewhere the perfect explanation for the time reversal scene - Superman DID NOT made Earth spin backwards, he himself moved so fast that for him the time started to reverse and the Earth would spin backwards even if he flew fast around the moon.
He did, unless the DIRECTOR says he didn't, the movie says he did, I don't know why this is still an arguement.

@herbion6117 THIS version of Superman doesn't move the planet Tyler's version does, I was making an example, keep up. THIS version flew around the Earth so fast it reversed the Earth's rotation rewinding time. It doesn't matter if that's not what you think he did, they show him doing it.
