For me, the scene where Joker fights Andrea and chooses a piece of baloney instead of a knife to hit her *captures the very essence* of the character. This *IS* the Joker in all his hilarious and terrifying glory.
I read an interview somewhere that Kevin Conroy (may he rest in peace) channeled a piece of his own past when he was recording the “I didn’t count on being happy” scene. As best I can remember, when Conroy was a teenager, his father (who was an alcoholic) attempted suicide and was in the hospital for a long time. Conroy sat with him during the time his father was comatose and talked to him. Conroy channeled that dark memory into his performance.
@@autobotproductions1244You don’t know the half of it. There’s a reason his delivery feels so… raw and personal. Conroy struggled with a lot that related him to the character he played, from his struggles with hiding being a closeted gay actor in Hollywood where he had to hide his true identity, to severe parental issues and regrets over how he lost his father. I highly recommend looking up some of the videos about his early life and personality. It’s a fascinating watch that really fleshes out what he brought into the role.
There's another panel video where Conroy talks about how Andrea Beaumont's name was chosen. She's named after Andrea Romano, the iconic voice director of so many great animated series. It was almost a gag choice as during ADR sessions, Conroy would always have to do grunts and groans back to back and he would always jokingly end each take with a very orgasmic "ANDREA............" It apparently made the producers and writers laugh so much, they named the leading lady after her.
Bat-May is back for one more round! Mask of the Phantasm is LITERALLY the best Batman movie EVER. The mystery, and the action are amazing, and Conroy and Hamill give some of their best performances. I've yet to see any on the live action movies live up to this standard. Although Dark Knight comes closest.
I would agree with the caveat that The Dark Knight is the best live action movie with Batman in it (its really a Joker movie) but Mask Of The Phantasm is the best Batman movie...... It really gets us in the head of an early Batman......
Maybe it's just because I enjoy the Riddler way more than the Joker but I loved The Batman (2022) the most. It had a greater feeling of real stakes and history, the dark conspiracy between the Waynes, Renewal and everyone in between was awesome. Batman and Selina were great, the action was all kinds of cool, the music is simply unforgettable even with the needle drop of Nirvana, and some of those scenes I'll never forget and still haunt me to this day (if not, it makes the movie more enjoyable). I really really like The Batman and I think it's the best live-action Batman, even if the ending with a flood literally washing away Gotham's evil was not what I expected. A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one in my book! And yeah, Bat-Maniacs, I made a Star Wars Prequel reference, try and stop me mofos 😈😈😈
Batman and the Phantasm is still one of the best Batman films ever made they told a fantastic story and is beautifully well told any give us one of the best Batman origin stories
Bruce even though he was only a child, constantly blames himself, believing that he could've done something, other than watch. Batman's enemies arent wrong when they say he belongs in Arkham just as much as they do.
Amen, and it's really heartbroken that he is no longer going to voice The Joker anymore, all of us understand because he loves Kevin Conroy as a brother, the best Batman/Joker portrayal in history.
Conroy's delivery of the line "Leave Andrea, now, please" is amazing how he shifts from Batman back to Bruce when he says Please was always been one of the best line deliveries in a Batman movie or show.
I always thought the flashback showing Andrea discovering “Jack Napier” killed her father is so underrated. Not only is it a great scream by Dana Delany, but it truly shows how evil Joker was even before his transformation. No laugh, no monologue, just calmly walking by Andrea, listening to her scream, then taking one of her apples. His smile isn’t even that wide, it was like killing that man meant nothing
Ironically, I think the writing on Mask of the Phantasm made it feel less cartoony than the live action Batman movies of the same time, obviously to their credit. I don’t know that I really believe it’s the best Batman movie either, but it gave us all a glimpse at how good the Timmverse (and 2D animation as a whole) could really be. It set a high bar.
I really recommend Paul Dini's "Dark Knight: A True Batman Story" as it really gives a new perspective on the production of a Mask of the Phantasm and a lot about his life.
A few years ago, I saw Batman '89, Batman Returns, and Mask of the Phantasm all back to back in theater on Batman Day (The Batman was playing, too, but I'd already seen it in theater, so I skipped). As someone who never saw any of them like that before, it was a heck of an experience.
One of my favorite lines is when batman is interrogating Arthur "SO YOU SOLD HIM TO THE MOB!" And I love the joker line when he blows up Andreas apartment " hello? Hello operator, I believe my parties been disconnected hahahahahaha"
I like how the Phantasm shows up briefly in Justice League Unlimited in a time skip where Terry Mc Guinness is seeking answers about how Bruce is his Biological Father. His quest for answers leads him to Amanda Waller who admits to him that she was the one responsible for using Bruce’s DNA for Project Batman Beyond which would ensure that the Legacy of Batman would live on. She then tells him that genetics is only part of the story the rest is tragedy. She then tells Terry that her Assassin couldn’t pull the trigger. The Assassin was the Phantasm and Andrea confronted Waller telling her that if Waller wanted to Honor Batman’s memory she couldn’t resort to murder because Batman would never kill his enemies or even innocent civilians.
I saw this at the movies when I was 10. I remember because I had to pee when the trailers were playing, but when I got back the movie had already started.
I can’t believe it’s Bat-May again, it seems like it was just a little while ago. Sad to know this will be the final one, this is the only thing watch from Channel Awesome anymore.
Alfred is the only one who can stop Batman, if the Caped Crusader does completely give in to the darkness. Bruce cannot kill the person who is a second father to him. Plus, he knows Bruce better than anyone alive.
I don’t remember any advertising for this movie. I just remember my mother coming home and handing me the VHS with no explanation. And yes, I think this is my favorite Batman movie.
I saw a preview of it on my Free Willy VHS, and one time, I saw a trailer for it at the movie theater, which was cool. I ended up getting the video for my 11th birthday.
I literally discovered the movie was out from a cardboard display of the poster at my local McDonald's (wasn't even aware there was an animated movie out, and they weren't advertising toys or anything, so no clue why they had it up). But immediately got it once it was released on VHS.
I really love the poster where the silhouette is used to make a compelling image. It greatly reminds me of the poster for the Fantasia 50th anniversary rerelease, where Chernabog is similarly drawn with ominous texture and lighting.
I've Always feared you become that which you've fought against. You walk the edge of the abyss ever night, but you haven't fallen in and i thank haven for that!
I had watched a ton of the animated series when it was premiering on cartoon Network. I remember how shocked I was when I was at Blockbuster and I saw that there was a movie for the show.
The Human Building is the best part of Batmay. Truly a legendary moment. Mask of the Phantasm made a mark on the history of Batman media for good reason. It is not my favorite Batman thing, but it is iconic. It deserves to be watched and remembered today.
I wanted to see this in the theaters, but it was in and out so fast, blink and you missed it. I did buy it when it came out on VHS and I can't even tell you how many times I watched it as it was just that good.
I remember being thrilled when Cartoon Network's Cartoon Theatre was going to showcase this film for the very first time circa 1998 until maybe 2001...and somehow missed it EVERY DAMN TIME since it was shown around 6/7pm. After 25 years before Kevin's passing, I finally watched my beloved series get a movie; and i loved every minute of it. With the few revealing moments, I could only say...I wish I would've seen it earlier since the weight would've been more impactful as a child. An interesting myth, as I don't recall where I've read this source, is that the development of the Masked Phantasm/Andre Beaumont were partially inspired by a Nicky Holland's 1992 single: LadyKiller. With just one listen: it is probable that it set the tone for both the visual and writing staff along with Shirley Walker...but again...its a myth since I can not pinpoint who and where this information was said. A treat for all TAS fans. 🦇
I’d love to see The Phantasm again in some form of Batman media. Video game, live action, something. It’s a great character and I think it’s criminal that we don’t see more of the character.
I really consider this childhood movie as one of the most greatest Batman film in history and one of my personal favorite movie too, we all love Kevin Conroy who really gives a magnificent voice performance as The Dark Knight. 💐🦇
I'm still pissed my mom wouldn't let me rent this movie, because she thought it was "too violent". And yet she let me see Batman Forever and Batman and Robin in movie theatres back in the day.
I'm glad you mentioned Batman: Year Two. I was reading Batman regularly through the 80s, and I saw this in the theaters, and it seemed a pretty strong inspiration to me. It really was a great movie though.
This was my go-to movie. I own the soundtrack and VHS and DVD Blu-ray. It's story helped me with my heart after loss. I loved it as a kid and I love it now.
I got to see this in the theater with my dad. He was reluctant when he found out it was cartoon, but it was too late, i had already gotten him into the theater by that point. So glad i got to see it with him
One of the main things I conjure when picturing the essence of the show. Dark broody Batman, terrified gang bosses, bleak Noir Gotham and the Hamill Joker gleefully cackling away in the shadows, as well as the origin story the series never told in this detail. Just when Bruce thinks he'd found a brighter, more positive path than Batman crime steals away one more person he loves, cementing his ultimate destiny along with hers.
This came out on my 22nd birthday, though didn’t get to see for a couple of weeks. Was nice to get background to Batman (in the series at least). Great vid!
I’m from the uk 🇬🇧 & Mask Of The Phantasm never arrived in theatres. But on September 16th 2023., it was Batman day at The Quad cinema in Derby England & they show Batman Movie 1966, BATMAN M.O.T.P, BATMAN 89 & THE DARK KNIGHT. I only went to see MASK OF THE PHANTASM cause I wanted to see the animated movie on the screen & it was an epic showing. If this film is playing at your local cinema’s I highly ergde you all to go & see it as soon as possible !
This is one film that I have bought so many times over… VHS (parents got it for me as a child) dvd, Blu-ray, digital, Blu-ray complete collection and finally the 4K. This is a perfect film. Miss Kevin Conroy and the rest of the cast. Wish I got to see it in the theaters. 😊
the greatest scene in this movie. where bruce begging his parent at there grave. that prove then and there in that scene that Kevin Conroy was our batman forever.
I know right, that whole scene is just so epic and powerful making everyone feel sorry for Bruce Wayne, I am sure that his parents would love to have their son to have a life but the son man a promise to avenge them.
@@TheImaginator972 sad truth is bruce never got past that night in alley . he still that little kid trap in night he lost his parent.s and as batman he keeps repeating that night trying to stop 2 bullets from killing them. over and over why he never stop being batman,
@@sspd077 Yeah, an little boy that Bruce Wayne was there were nothing he can't do but saw his parents protect him, It was pain for him that still haunted him ever since he started career as Batman and I do enjoy that graveyard scene so much by Kevin Conroy magnificent voice performance.
Mask of the Phantasm is definitely my favorite Batman Movie. Kevin Conroy is Batman for me. Mark Hamill is Joker. Everyone in the Animated cast became what I hear when I read a character saying something in comics.
I am so glad that Bat-May is back. This is not only one of my top five favorite movies of all time, but my favorite animated movie of all time. The music by Shirley Walker is iconic and amazing.
I personally feel this movie made the most of its run time. I've seen movies an hour longer that didn't do as much with the time given to it. I think the mask of the phantasm is a marvel of condensed storytelling.
Its still definitely in my top three best Batman movies ever made! And honestly probably the best animated Batman media there is. IN my opinion of course.
This is one of those movies I struggled to love despite not being able to point out anything notably wrong with it. Looks great, story is great, sound is great, everyone's characterization is great... Only thing I can figure is that it was... great in the ways I expected? It's quintessential Batman, but maybe I was looking for something weird or off-brand to give it more of an identity. I still liked it overall though! In any case, I love watching Bat-May because it gives me a greater appreciation for animated Batman, so thanks Walter!

Beautiful movie. Simply the best Batman movie ever!!!
I got to see this in the theater with my dad.
He was reluctant when he found out it was cartoon, but it was too late, i had already gotten him into the theater by that point.
So glad i got to see it with him
Did he like it?
@@NeoConnor1 he wasn't keen on going to see a cartoon, but thought it was decent.
Batman’s time of the year has come.
I remember seeing that movie in the theater. The Phantom is a good scary underrated Batman villain.
Man i wish they made another movie like this.
This came out on my 22nd birthday, though didn’t get to see for a couple of weeks.
Was nice to get background to Batman (in the series at least).
Great vid!
19:29 IT IS I, THE HUMAN BUILDING!!
CHUCKIE SOL...YOUR ANGEL OF DEATH AWAITS.
Still the best Batman movie, period.
i love how tragic at the end when batman stands there mourning but when the signel shows he knows what to do
the greatest scene in this movie. where bruce begging his parent at there grave. that prove then and there in that scene that Kevin Conroy was our batman forever.
I’m still sad the Lego Batman Movie didn’t include The Phantasm because having a physical mini fig version would have been awesome
Mask of the Phantasm is definitely my favorite Batman Movie. Kevin Conroy is Batman for me. Mark Hamill is Joker. Everyone in the Animated cast became what I hear when I read a character saying something in comics.
I always wondered if Andrea knew Arthur was the one who sold her and her father out and had something planned for him before The Joker got him.
I think she would have mentioned it if she knew but I ponder the same thing.
Mask of the phantasm is awesome!!!
That "Human Building" bit took me out 🤣
I own this on Laser disk... sadly the player is no more. . .
Its still definitely in my top three best Batman movies ever made! And honestly probably the best animated Batman media there is. IN my opinion of course.
The phrase "over 30 years later" ruined my whole day
“Bat-May, your angel of death awaits… JK, we cool.”
Came as soon as got off work! LETS GO WITH PHANTASM!!!!❤ Easily the greatest of The Dark Knight Movies!
Thank you for the video.
A Phantasm? Again? I thought we sprayed for these.
A can of Phanta. Not to be confused for the drink.
THE. GREATEST. BATMAN. MOVIE.
