- A video to help people who want to learn about rugby, especially those used to watching American Football.
Please feel free to ask any questions you have about rugby in the comments section. I'll make sure to respond with answers.
Please no Rugby vs Football fights!
If anyone is interested, the song being played is Vendetta Nerds by Shawn Lee from the soundtrack to the video game Bully.
Notes: There are 15 players per side- technically 30 players on the field.
Thanks to the youtube community for help with the clips. - กีฬา
A lot of these guys would make perfect linebackers. They're big, fast, and tough. I'm surprised the NFL hasn't tapped into this talent.
the guy that made this video really did it well! well done! congratulations!
Thank you for the translation into American. I wish more people here would get into Rugby but are to scared too
Thank you for this video. I've been looking for something like it for quite some time: just something that doesn't try to tell you everything there is to know, but tells you just enough to be able to follow a game.
Great vid! Only things really missing to introduce Americans to the rugby rules is "no blocking" and "you're just allowed to tackle a player who has the ball".
My team played an US army team the other day in a friendly and they had some new players, who used to play American Football, trying to block us from charging a kick-off ;-)
They were nice guys and learned fast, but that seems to be an occuring misunderstanding regarding US-Americans and rugby.
I'm very interested in case i play in college and this really helped! Thank you! and 3:31 holy shit haha
during a scrum, can the team who throws the ball into the scrum, throw it towards their side of the scrum? or must it be down the middle? is it thrown or placed?
This was an awesomely informative video, thanks for putting it together and uploading it for the benefit of new rugby fans like myself. I'm not well-versed with the rules of American football either so it was nice to see something that compared the two and you obviously seem like you know your rugby too!
Thanks for this video, playing a fun game of 7's tomorrow and needed to brush up on the basics..cheers!
How could anyone not like this? So simple, great footage!
That tackle at 3:30 was more like Judo. xD
Great video! I hope that NBC uses this video (or something very like it) when they broadcast the college sevens tourney on June 4-6.
But this is a great primer for people.
Thanks for the video, starting to watch Rugby on NBC sports network. This clears a lot of stuff up that I was really confused about.
Thank you so much for posting this.
In addition to the first offside, you can be offside in the same way from a lineout, scrum and maul, though you must be further back in the first 2
Do you have a part two coming?
Lessons could include rucking and mauling, the various postions in the forwards and backs and their functions, how a scrum is formed, and basic penalties (show examples in slow-mo - offsides, hands in, in from the side).
Sorry for "suggestions" . This is agreat start on the video, but I just wanted to add some "FAQs" that I hear from spectators in the US.
Great video dude. I was lost watching it on BBC, but now I some what have a clue of what is going on. Thanks.
In-goal = try zone or the try line. The phrase 'getting a try', was from the olden days when a try didnt get you any points at all, but would give you a 'try' at a conversion, to kick over the posts and get those kick ass points. :)
I watched this because when I was overseas, I couldn't understand what the hell was going on. I was comparing it too much to American football. Good vid! Thanks man.
good work .... this is also good for non-americans :) the best intro to rugby rules i've seen on YT so far
As a Scot I am worried to see how many people in the North American continent may finally be cottoning on and playing the worlds finest team sport. Also one with the trickiest rules which is maybe why the referee's word is never questioned. But once you are hooked you are hooked for life.To see the game at its best I would say watch the French teams of the 70s and 80s.
This looks fascinating! I'm a big American Football fan and I'm American, I appreciate the well constructed and executed plays of football, but rugby looks like there is more room for spontaneousness. I mean, who doesn't like seeing a football team lateral around to try and score a game winning touchdown with 1 second on the clock on a punt return?
Thanks for the video, I like watching new sports and am going to purchase the Rugby World Cup online, I did it with Cricket back in April and I like that sport and hopefully I'll enjoy Rugby the same!
Thx man. Again AWESOME video. Now i finally get y they get in the ruck! Now im trying to teach my cuzzin Melissa rugby.
Great video
Thanks for the video!
im just starting rugby and this really helped
Nice vid u do a good job of explaining
looks so fun thanks aqlot man
great video bro
i just joined the rugby team at school, and this video helped me to understand it a little bit more
but i cant help but wonder
is the song in the video from Rockstars BULLY ?
front row (props and hookers) are the big guys that are usually the big factors in the rucks also the hooker usually throws the ball in. the second rows are the tall guys and they are the engines in the scrumb they usually get lifted in the linouts. the flankers are on the side of the scrumb and they too also may sometimes be lifted and the number 8 is at the back of the scrumb. all those positions are needed to contest in the rucks and scrumbs and lineouts they are called "forwards".
Just watched my first allblacks game on Saturday and rather enjoyed it. Watching it again this Saturday and hopefully it will come together a little better this time.
This really teaches the rules for Americans. Great job with telling the rules correctly.
thanks this was very helpful now im ready for the worldcup next year
Good video for those who are starting to play rugby :)
@monkthatgotfunk thanks so much for your quick reply!
one more question:
for a try you need to actually touch the ball down to the turf once you've crossed the try line. (this is actually where the gridiron football term "touchdown" comes from; nowadays you no longer have to.)
i see some rugby players once they're in the in-goal, they deliberately take a long time to touch down. what if a defending player snatches it from him and touches it down himself? does his team get it at the 22m line?
Great video. I think it answers a lot of fundamental questions. I know some of the basics, but can not determine when somebody is called "offsides". Another tough one I have is "Coming in from the side" - I think I know what it is in theory, but can not really tell when watching a game. Are therw any good You Tube videos on the subjects? Finally, a good video recommendation on Line-outs would be appreciated.
Thx! Helps alot!
I hope the upcoming Fox Sports 1 or Fox Sports 2 broadcasts rugby. I'm a very visual person and watching it on either FS1 or FS2 would be really enjoyable for me.
Cool, and thanks for posting this anyway.
Question: can you "strip" or take the ball from an opposing teams hands? Or is that not legal?
No, you can kick the ball with mates in front of you but only you (the kicker) and mates behind you are allow to play the ball at the reception. The mates who are upfront the kicker and play the ball at the reception are offside.
Great Vid
3:28 And we have a new Olympic Record!
Man it's a weird game 2 me but looks good, i know how 2 play football n their rules but rugby!!! Man it's kinda hard to undesrtand this stuff but great video
Ohhh i get it! Thx man! This is really helping teach my cuzzin Melissa rugby! GO Australian Wallabies!!!!!!!! btw wats ur favorite rugby union team?
some players will choose to wear headgear to help protect from concussions and also to avoid having their ears rubbed off in scrums and VERY occasionally shoulder pads will be worn, although this practice usually stops at the same time your mum stops packing your kit bag... both headgear and shoulder pads must be a soft foam material (no hard shell) google rugby headgear and rugby shoulder pads for an example, it's not letting me post links
I like how while he says "there are many rules in rugby not covered in this video" on 6:13 someone on defence gets elbowed in the face lmao
i have just recently gotten into rugby. i respect the game no doubt. i would like to catch a live match sometime.
Yes. If you want to adapt a more structured game spending more time in the rucks will allow your back line to set up and be more organised in their offensive play. If you want to play a more fast paced open game you would try not to spend time in the rucks as it allows the opposition defense to set up. However it usually leads to a lot of errors. Nowadays you need structure to breach defense especially international level.
really helpful
I've been playing rugby for a while now, but I'm still a bit confused about the rucks. I've always just assumed that the reason why a side would want to set up a ruck instead of just running in and picking up the ball before a ruck forms is because rucks give them more time. Is this assumption correct? Or is there another reason? In my league if my recollection is correct, sometimes once down, the tackled player would just pass it to his teammate from the ground, is this allowed
Great now i understand !
the scrum is done when one team moves the ball to the back of their pack and the scrum half passes the ball out to the backs, or when a team gets penalized for illegal conduct :)
this is good for me because there's no rugby clubs here where i live in the US so im gonna start my own :)
What is the name of the music being played ?
good video, this will help me for when i try out for my schools rugby team in the spring ... thank you !
I think I get it. Usually there will be someone rucking over the tackled player to protect the ball, and since you can only approah from the front they have to knock the offense back to reach it.
So can you just kick the ball to pass and to get a field goal whenever? or can you only kick at specific times?
When you are tackled and held by the tackler (you can get up and keep playing if he lets go), you must release the ball and present it to your team. Your supporting teammates of mostly forwards then must go through the back of the ruck on each side to win the ball. You cannot go through the side of the ruck. Using your hands off your feet is illegal. If you feel you will not win a ruck, then take your players out and have more in the defencive line.
what's the difference between a ruck and a scrum?
other than why you're doing it.
and on either, how do you move the ball if you're part of the ruck/scrum?
Im from England, and im starting to like Rugby as i have been playing it in school, i want to learn the rules!
@monkthatgotfunk Excellent - it looks like you are going to hit 20K pretty soon... it looks like you are at 18K right now!
I have a couple of rugby/ football questions -
Can you still score 3 points with a dropkick in AF - or did that get outlawed?
Also - it appears to me that there is alot more "rucking" the AF running back lately. Have you noticed this? Do you know if it is legal?
Does the offensive team have an unlimited amount of downs to score? Or is it like American football, in the sense that at some point you have to punt the ball to the opposing team?
i used to play Waterpolo as a kid, now in university there is a rugby team. I think its quite a good susbstitute, i love contact sports. I have tried footbal (whooops soccer sorry^^) but its not fair, you touch your opponent you recieve a yellow or a red card.
Why i love rugby.... you actually salute your opponing team entereing the field and leaving it
@monkthatgotfunk Sorry - yes I meant mauling. So in AF, a player can bind on to the running back and propel him forward? I thought I had seen more of it lately in AF, that's why I asked. Thanks!
@RuckerMucker The other situation is when kicking, this can become more complicated especially when teams begin kicking back and forth. If a player from team red is kicking the kicking player and all players behind him are on side, any players off side must immediately begin to retreat until an onside player is in front of them (this is called "putting someone onside" ) Anyone offside is not able to tackle and offside players moving towards the opponent are penalized.
Wow, rugby is fucking crazy! I never knew :D
I love it ! Less Tactical / Theoretical !
Perhaps this question has been answered earlier but what are the major differences between traditional rugby and the rugby sevens?
thank pal !!
thanks
why is there 4 poles and no cross bar in the videos im watching? and how does the scoring work in that case
Thanks for the video, now I have a new favorite team, HARLEQUINS!
Thanks. And the tackled player's teammates don't just grab the ball immediately after a tackle is because if they tried that without a ruck, they would get trucked, right?
i love to purchase a rugby dvd
Can you make a video ewxplaining what each position is supposed to do
im joining rugby and this video has really helped
@chittychad18 its perfectly acceptable as long as u go "throught the gate" as in straight over the top, drive the defenders off the ball and u stay on your feet. then the ball is deemed out of the ruck so the next player through the gate can pick the ball
What is the best rugby cluc team and is there a difference between Rugby League and Rugby Union?
Okay great vid man. Really. I watch Rugby, but i still wonder. If the defense, in the ruck, goes OVER the opposing team in the ruck what happens? Also what is the point of pushing the guys in the ruck?
well explained
You don't have to make an attempt to "bring down your opponent" in fact in some cases it's better to try and hold them up, but you certainly can't shoulder charge.
You're allowed to leave your feet to tackle though.
@AutodromoF1 "would roll the ball towards my team's side." -- That is a penalty.
You know a player is in a ruck because he can only participate on it (try to get possession of the ball) when it touches a team mate making contact. You also cannot get into the ruck by the sides of the formation, that is a faul play. Once in the ruck, you cannot manipulate the ball
If you are not in the ruck, you must wait behind the last player foot.
(anyone: correct me if Im wrong)
There are 7 backs the scrumbhalf who passes the ball at the rucks and scrumbs and linouts. the number 10 who is the flyhalf who sets up the plays (hes important) number 11 whos on the left wing who is usually fast and strong. number 12 who plays of the numbr 10 . number 13 will same as number 12 number 14 is the right wing he has to be fast aswell. and lastly number 15 he is the fullback he makes sure that the opposition doesnt score a try if they break through the defence.
@monkthatgotfunk Good point. My son played OG on a very good HS team. The one time a punt got blocked he said the way the opponenet stacked the linebackers reminded him more of a "Crash(?)" at the tryline.
thanx proper helpfull
They are very good at what they do. I couldn't do it
I want to know the rules on turn overs on a ruck. How does the defence get the ball? Can a player simply reach through the rucking players and take it? It seems like they have to wait.
Some players will wear a soft scrum hat, mainly to prevent 'cauliflower ear'. Soft under pads are allowed but nothing solid.
@RuckerMucker Hi There, offside should really be considered differently for 2 different areas. Consider red team and blue team at ruck time. All red players must be behind the hindmost foot of any red players engaged in the ruck and all blue players must be behind the hindmost foot of any blue players engaged in the ruck, essentially forming 2 offside lines(one for each team) with a small "no mans land" between them.
@monkthatgotfunk Good video mate. My only criticism is you say "your free to make a play at the ball from any point of the field" isn't entirely true as you have to remain onside.
Good video, but be aware this video refers to Rugby UNION. There are 2 types of Rugby. Rugby LEAGUE is confined largely to Australia, England, NZ and Papua New Guinea. Rugby Union (or just Rugby) is by far the more popular sport worldwide. The rules of Rugby League make it a little closer to American Football.
I'm starting a rugby club at my college!!
do you get a bonus if you score a let between the posts?
I know for a long time it was also 4 points for the try and 3 for the conversion
i didn't get when the scrum is done ???
I HAVE LIVED NONE OF MY LIFE IN THE STATES AND I DON'T GET AMERICAN FOOTBALL AND I WAS BORED SO I WATCHED THIS!! OH AND I WAS BORN IN THE STATES THAT'S IT
4 poles and no crossbar im assuming you;re seeing footage of Australian Rules Football, which is NOTHING like Rugby contrary to what many people say.
He will call out to them to stop... like for instance common calls like "release tackler", "no hands in the ruck (defending team)", or tell a the defending team to get out of the ruck depending on the refs observation and interpretation of the situation..
@monkthatgotfunk The home nations play separate in League now as well. Last Great Britain Team was in 2007 or 2008
It might help North Americans to the think of the advantage law as being analogous to the delayed penalty in hockey.
