      I think Jonah beat Campo many times when they played each other. The 95 Bledisloe Cup game in Sydney, Hong Kong 7's, Super Rugby. All whilst suffering from kidney failure. So Jonah's career was always on a bad day.

    • @antonposa5345
      @antonposa5345 7 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      That is true. But Jonah's strength was not in his stats. It was his aura. He was the first global rugby superstar, and catapulted the All Blacks into the fully professional era we know today. To do that you have to capture people's imaginations. And that's why, in my mind, he will always be the greatest.

    George Gregan played his heart out that day. As an All Black supporter. It was awesome to see George Gregan and Tim Horan at Jonahs Memorial service. Much respect to both teams. RIP Jonah Lomu All Black No 941

      Gregan tore us apart in the first half - or at least after the first five minutes. But I remember Kronfeld coming on at half time and completely stuffed his game. He spent most of the second half with his hands in the air ar the back of the ruck unable to get the ball.

    I was there. It really was the best match of rugby I have ever seen. It was an electric atmosphere in the stadium with a massive crowd not knowing from second to second who was going to win. That was what made it special not the defence or the attack. Every time Jonah got the ball in the second half the crowd went quiet, absolutely quiet, in anticipation of what he might do. A privilege to have seen the game and to have seen Jonah, who in the best game of rugby ever, was the best player.

    I remember this game started (for me) at 6am on a Saturday morning on Fox Sports World. I had only been interested in rugby for about a year, but I was able to watch this match live. Being a Wallaby fan, I hated to see NZ win...but the match itself was so fantastic that I ended up watching the replays, recording it, and forcing family to watch it with me. Truly, rugby of the gods.

    Thirteen years old, and still the best game I've ever seen. I watch this game, and I feel bad for my Aussie neighbours that they don't currently have a Gregan or a Larkham to make those good decisions in the backline. Most Aussies probably assume that all Kiwis like easy wins over them, but this one doesn't. I miss the days when we had Justin vs George vs Joost, three amazing players in the same position. I feel incredibly lucky to have witnessed such an era.

I was in The US on business and a group of us found a bar that was screening the game and serving breakfast - there was about 15 Australians and 10 Kiwis watching it live - everyone of us could hardly speak when the whistle finally went - and typical of a rugby crowd, there was true respect shown by everyone Aussie and Kiwi alike. A fantastic game, two outstanding teams and a perfect result!

    I had the pleasure of seeing this on TV, but it must have been incredible actually being there. Almost 15 years on and its still one of the most exciting matches ive ever seen.
    If you'd actually seen the entire match, it wasn't a bad defensive game, it was two equally skilled teams attacking furiously at each other and capitalizing on lapses in each others defense.
    Besides, a bad defensive game is obviously far more fun to watch than a good defensive game of just penalty kicks and kicking for territory.

      sorry to say here mate that AFL NRL and Soccer are all crapping on Rugby now in OZ. Our game is broke and no juniors coming through. Rugby sadly will be a game we were once good at and that we cant compete in any more soon. RWC 19 we will miss the 1/4 Finals in my view and wont make the Top 6 teams in the world again after that. It's sad for Trans Tasman rivalry and Bledisloe and we will never give you top competition or beat NZ again.

    Three years after the heartbreaking 1995 World Cup final defeat to South Africa by 15-12 Jonah and the All Blacks came to Kuala Lumpur and played in the 7-aside Rugby tournament in the 1998 Commonwealth Games held in Kuala Lumpur.
    Jonah Lomu and his team mates won the gold medal beating South Africa in the final.
    When he was in Kuala Lumpur for the Commonwealth Games Lomu was ever the great sportsman he was never showy and always humble and down to earth person

      @zel3888 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @LD its actually gone back to the averages ... i mean look at the history of bledisloe cup going back to the 20s - its all NZ, with a wallabies win every blue moon. THe 90s are early 2000s dominance of the wallabies was a complete aberration. Once in 100 year team with eales and gregan etc. Now its reverted to the long term average.

    • @zel3888
      @zel3888 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @LD Mate don't know where you're getting your stats from but Australia have won the Bledisloe cup only 12 times since 1932 - and most of those were in the 1994-2003 period. The stats confirm y pesimistic (I'm an Australian/wallabies supporter) - Australian rugby has reverted to the mean. We can maybe expect to win the cup every 10-15 years at most, until another "team of the century" comes along. Source for my stats: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bledisloe_Cup#Results

    • @stevvvvveperry

      @LD rugby union in australia had a real chance to became the dominant rugby code in australia in the late 90s. Super rugby was thriving aswell as the national team and the super league had depleted rugby league, but australian rugby blew it. Im a fan of both codes but australian rugby could be a powerhouse on the same level as new zealand, if the australian rugby administrators took advantage of the early professional era in the 90s.

A former teammate of mine (Srumhalf) commented on my post that Sid Goings and Gareth Edwards were the two greatest scrumhalfs. Not disputing, I replied I always loved to see George Gregan and Justin Marshall go head-to-head. Always great games when those two were in there, not discounting the other 28 players on the field. Comments from a 66 yr old Yank that played for 28 yrs for the San Francisco Rugby Club, for what it's worth. Cheers.

    I was at this game and yes the feeling was the best I have had. About 10 minutes form halftime the aussies came back and I had to get down the stairs on the northern stand and have a smoke as I thought I was having a heart attack. A little aussie kid had me on when I got back 10 minutes into second half when I had settled down. An amazing game and crowd and the pubs were full of folk marvelling at the game and were better at giving credit where it was due than us Kiwis. Truly the best.

    Comparing rugby to American football is just stupid. That's like trying to say Usain Bolt wouldn't win a marathon. Of course he wouldn't, they are completely different sports. American football requires padding because it's a much faster and wide-open game. There is a lot of space to generate speed and the players that play the game focus on speed and agility over raw power unless you're on the line. Rugby is a much more contained sport where the two teams are constantly in close quarters. Very rarely to teams generate enough space between each other to even cause a high speed collision. So there's little to no padding needed. It requires brute strength and endurance. Only the best rugby players would be good at American football and only the best football players would be good at rugby. Quit trying to compare the two and enjoy both games for what they are.

    • @reganheath
      @reganheath 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're definitely right, comparing the two is a bit ridiculous.
      But I disagree with the point that in Rugby you don't have the space to generate the same speed, I think this is demonstrably false simply by looking at recordings and calculating the speeds at which players are moving.
      Instead I think the biggest difference is around the rules about when/how you are allowed to tackle players who are moving at speed and more importantly in the air. In rugby you are not allowed to tackle a player in the air because without padding this would be incredibly dangerous. I don't think the NFL has the same rule?
      Also, the use of pads allows players to hit each other harder and in a more spectacular fashion without an unreasonable risk of injury, serious or otherwise, and this simply makes for a better spectacle.

    • @xXRazorbacksXx
      @xXRazorbacksXx 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're right, the NFL doesn't have a rule about hitting in the air, but I may have worded my statement incorrectly. In Rugby, the ability to get out in the open to generate that speed is rare, while in football, it's every single play. That's what I meant by that.
      You're also right about padding giving more freedom with hits. Especially helmets. As a former player, I can say that padding gives you the feeling of invincibility, so players are willing to sacrifice their bodies more for hits. This, obviously, leads to bigger hits and more injuries.

    • @blizzard0508
      @blizzard0508 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've tried explaining this to rugby fans, but lately I've just given up and started saying the pads in American Football make its hits harder and without them we'd have pussy hits like in Rugby. I love both games, but I'm just tired of people saying Rugby is superior.

    • @reganheath
      @reganheath 10 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      blizzard0508
      Perhaps the issue is your use of the word "pussy" hmm.. It is clearly incorrect to refer to the hits in Rugby that way, the players are clearly not going easy on each other. The only difference, it seems to me, is that certain types of tackle are illegal in Rugby, for safety reasons, and that these hits are legal in American Football specifically because the pads allow them more safely. That's pretty much it.

    • @blizzard0508
      @blizzard0508 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Regan Heath I've only recently started calling the hits in Rugby pussy-like, because most Rugby fans don't want to listen, and all they see is the pads. I'm just tired of writing drawn out explanations that just get laughed at. Insulting the other sport(Even though I greatly enjoy it) seems like the only way to get the point across anymore.

    • @filmcreations
      @filmcreations 10 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      True...But NFL is still a harder hitting tactical sport and you got bigger guys doing the work...that's why the pads. Statistics prove this too. The armor came later as a response to the nature of the game. There are far more surface injuries in Rugby but deeper body injuries in Grid Iron. It has to do with the structure of the games. Obstruction is illegal in Rugby and would hurt the game if allowed. But in Grid Iron, obstruction is one of the core tactics and would hurt the game if not allowed. They are really two different sports but both good sports. That's why we need Rugby in the USA.I posted an article on the All blacks sizing up NFL above. Its very insightful.

      Would be great to see Rugby take off in the US, and I'd love to see other countries be competitive at Gridiron.
      They are very different disciplines, Gridiron has harder hits and more athleticism, whereas Rugby players are expected to be able to play the full 80+mins on offense and defense. Comparing them is somewhat futile.

Although we don't have much of this sport in the US, I loooove football and this game seems pretty interesting. So I've been looking into it more recently. I must say it's pretty different actually but in a unique way. I like it. U know what would be cool, if there was like a show where the mixed sports and like had rugby people tryin to play football or the other way around, or like tennis players trying to play bad mitten.
