I didn't even realize in american football just how much down time there is between each play, but its a solid chunk of the game just watching everyone meander back into position to start another play. The entertainment as a viewer in rugby is far more enjoyable imo

Without, unfortunately, knowing very much about this obviously fantastic sport, i would say that this introduction gives a good overview. If we had a club in my area when i was young, it might have been my sport. I am looking forward for the quarterfinals.
I wasn't born in Wigan but live here currently and my family isn't big on rugby. But living in Wigan, it's rugby mad. All Wigan Warriors fans except for 2. So 3 years later I've decided to get into it and will be going to my first match in under a month!
The scrum portion just became a lot more fun for me knowing now that they have to kick it around to get it to the waiting player. I had no idea what the purpose of it was about but I initially believed it was a territory thing and not a possession.
Apart from the back pass rule, the other big difference between Rugby and Gridiron is that you can only tackle the man with the ball in Rugby.......so in Gridiron you have your team mates taking out members of the opposition for you to clear your path to run and pass effectively. In Rugby when you have the ball the whole opposition is coming straight for you and you rely on your team mates to run with you to support your position for an effective pass or to push you on in a maul. Gridiron - When the ball is in your possession, team mates off the ball run forward to find space and clear your path. Rugby - When in possession, team mates off the ball get behind you and support your path.
A clarification--in Gridiron, this clearing of the path is called "blocking" and is not the same as a tackle, even though the defensive players may be knocked down by a block. Actual tackling (wrestling someone to the ground) is limited to the person in possession of the ball, similar to Rugby. There are many rules around tackling and blocking that can result in penalties in Gridiron--these rules are there to improve safety. Ultimately, Gridiron derives from Rugby, so there are many many similarities in the basics of the game.

That would be a "Holding" penalty. Players are taught to keep their hands in so it's more of a pushing motion. A rugby-style tackle is only permitted when you are tackling the ball carrier. I'm watching the Rugby World Cup for the first time and trying to learn more about the rules. It's nice seeing such a positive discourse between Rugby and Gridiron fans here, and that it hasn't immediately devolved into which sport is "best", or which sport is "tougher". Both are good in their own ways and the comment above makes a good point to illustrate that!

I've managed to get well into my 6th decade and have never watched a game of rugby but..whilst eating my tea ( or dinner if you're posh), I watched TV coverage of most of the last two games of the 2020 Six Nations (France v Wales) and latterly France v Scotland. Until now all I understood was how a Try and Conversion are scored and how many points are awarded. Anyway, I really enjoyed the games and though I've left it late (both in life and in the Rugby Season), I intend to start watching the game more. I'm English, and follow my football/soccer team (Tottenham Hotspur), and also like the NFL, following the fortunes of the Atlanta Falcons. So thanks for uploading this and can anyone suggest a team for me to follow? Thanks guys. Oh yes, also, I was really impressed with the discipline and sportsmanship of the players. The injury feigning and disrespect in Association Football appalls me more and more these days but the rugby players were real men in both their gameplay and character. Hats off to them all.
I wish the video included information on how possession of the ball is determined.This is the most confusing part for me; when or how is the defending team allowed to take the ball.
If at any moment you manage to wrestle the ball from an attacking player it is yours. But this is not easy. You can also intercept a pass if you are not offside. At the ruck if you are able to stay on your feet and drive over the fallen players it is yours. Rucks are tricky as you may not use your hands in a ruck. Also if the opponent kick the ball to you it is yours. But often a kick is high and you will get hit as you catch it. When you attack and step over sideline or kick over sideline you lose posession. If you play fowl or make a handling error you lose the ball.
They can take it whenever provided they aren't offside. In the ruck they have to be on their feet, if this is the case they can take the ball at any point.
The confusion for me is when a try is scored the conversion is kicked from different parts of the pitch sometimes right in front other times at more acute angles....!!
Nick F Well let me explain to you. In rugby for the try,which is like a touchdown in our football, you must place the ball in the in-goal(like the endzone in football) for the try to count. If you place the ball in the middle you get to kick aligned with middle. Basically you want to place the ball in the middle so the extra points are easier. Wherever you place the ball you must kick aligned with the spot where you placed it,

Clueless American starting to get into rugby here...and I have a question hopefully somebody can help me with. In a scrum, the video says the ball needs to be tossed directly into the middle of the scrum, but every scrum I have seen so far the player tossing the ball in very clearly throws it to the side his teammates are on, not the middle. Is the video wrong, or the ball is supposed to be thrown into the middle and teams just try to bend the rules as much as possible? Thanks.
Referees have bent that rule... they don't seem to care anymore. Since the early 2000s I haven't seen a team penalized for that. And it's not good for the game. They do penalize taking too long to throw the ball in, as always.

This is easy to follow. BTW what is a "breakdown"? Also do TURN DOWN the volume of the highlights, it was pleasant to listen to the explanations till suddenly my eardrums almost burst due to the sudden extremely loud cheering from the highlights!
To start the scrum, I notice it's a player not a referee that rolls the ball in. Is it a penalty or redo if it's found the person rolling the ball in purposely did not roll it into the middle between both teams? How do they regulate the "fairness" I guess is the question. Same question with the lineout, thanks!
Ref is supposed to call a penalty or redo. Usually only happens if the Ref fully noticed it which, since they stand right near the lineout/scrum should be the normal occurrence.
wherever after the try line that the ball is touched down, in a vertical line from one side of the pitch to the other ( H-bar to H-bar ) is where the kicker is allowed to take the conversion from, usually wherever on that line he feels comfortable. E.g: try is scored directly in between the H-bars, the conversion will be taken practically dead infront of the H-bar at any distance he wishes.
The rules are the exact same (mostly). 7s is 7 players per team and each half lasts 7 minutes and is mostly non professional. XV (15s) is 15 players per team playing 40 minute halves. The only big difference is a conversion or penalty kick isn't kicked off the ground in 7s.
a mouth guards is not to protect teeth, it helps prevent concussions. as an actively playing rugby union player, I have had one of my teeth knocked out that has been inside a proper fitting mouth guard.
And is there a penalty if the scrum half favors their team when they toss the ball into the scrum? (Ie. Tosses it more to their team's side as opposed to right in the middle)

A very basic guide but useful nonetheless. Perhaps th 5 yard line in front of the try line could have been included and what happens when a defending player has the ball over the try line. Stuff about mauls starting after a lineout would have been goo too. And calling a mark...
First, I don't understand the logical reason for throwing the ball perpendicular when a line-out occurs, so it doesn't matter which player of team A or B is throwing. So a player can't throw to his own mates. So the referee (a neutral person) could do it as well, or is it allowed to slightly throw the ball a bit to the left or right? Second, what's the reason for a scrum, a player of Team A or B is, obviously, throwing the ball slightly to his own teammates. So it would make sense to just start the game, and somebody is just throwing carrying or whatever the ball like a typical gameplay. Can somebody explain to me the reason for a scrum, I mean It exists for a reason, but I do not see the reason immediately.
The team throwing the ball in has the advantage of knowing what the throw is going to be (assuming it doesn't go wrong). The forwards will have rehearsed various options for throwing to the front of the line out, the middle, the end and even a long throw beyond the lineout. They will be able to select different receivers and different lifters, (they can have dummy receivers as well. They will also have options for what the tactic is once they have the ball.The defending team has got to try to work out who is the target, where in the line and what they will do with it. It has nothing to do with 'neutrals' taking the throw in highly-pressured match situations in front of big crowds with the game hanging in the balance. It is one of the iconic rugby set pieces that fans love to watch. As for the scrum it was the absolutely central part of earlier versions of 'football' that involved the young men of a whole village against another village. The modern scrum is the evolved, cleaned-up version of all those old games/battles. Scrums are awarded for more than forward passes, they are also given for knock ons, accidental offsides, plus a team that has been awarded a penalty can opt to kick at goal, kick to touch or have a scrum from where the penalty offence was committed. Again it is one of the iconic set pieces loved by rugby fans; one of the contests within the overall contest. It seems to me that you might prefer the Rugby League code version of the game (no line outs, scrums a mere formality, and no rucks or mauls either, although I think that would be your loss.
The lineout is to the advantage of the team throwing, they'll say words that indicate to their guys where it's going and maybe who needs to fake that it's them. As far as the scrum it resets the game but it keeps the ball in contest even if the team feeding has the advantage. A strong defensive scrum can drive the other team back and gain the ball.

The team that doesn't send the ball out of the field throws the lineout (Supposedly in between of the two lines, but they usually try to throw it slightly closer to their line). The line who catches the ball is now in possession of it and will try to play it.
Same thing. Soccer is an abbreviation of Association football (using the soc in Association). Countries that use the word soccer do so to avoid confusion with another kind of football that these countries play, e.g. American football, or Australian rules football. Countries that call the game football (e.g. UK) may also use the term soccer - but this would be slang or informal use.

My favourite part is where the front rows repeatedly fall on the ground and then the refs have to randomly guess whose fault it was.

Clueless American starting to get into rugby here...and I have a question hopefully somebody can help me with. In a scrum, the video says the ball needs to be tossed directly into the middle of the scrum, but every scrum I have seen so far the player tossing the ball in very clearly throws it to the side his teammates are on, not the middle. Is the video wrong, or the ball is supposed to be thrown into the middle and teams just try to bend the rules as much as possible? Thanks.
The teams just try to roll it to their own team but you are supposed to roll it into the middle lol
Referees have bent that rule... they don't seem to care anymore. Since the early 2000s I haven't seen a team penalized for that. And it's not good for the game. They do penalize taking too long to throw the ball in, as always.

To start the scrum, I notice it's a player not a referee that rolls the ball in. Is it a penalty or redo if it's found the person rolling the ball in purposely did not roll it into the middle between both teams? How do they regulate the "fairness" I guess is the question. Same question with the lineout, thanks!
Ref is supposed to call a penalty or redo. Usually only happens if the Ref fully noticed it which, since they stand right near the lineout/scrum should be the normal occurrence.
Where do you kick the ball from for the conversion?
wherever after the try line that the ball is touched down, in a vertical line from one side of the pitch to the other ( H-bar to H-bar ) is where the kicker is allowed to take the conversion from, usually wherever on that line he feels comfortable.
E.g: try is scored directly in between the H-bars, the conversion will be taken practically dead infront of the H-bar at any distance he wishes.

The rules are the exact same (mostly). 7s is 7 players per team and each half lasts 7 minutes and is mostly non professional. XV (15s) is 15 players per team playing 40 minute halves. The only big difference is a conversion or penalty kick isn't kicked off the ground in 7s.
a mouth guards is not to protect teeth, it helps prevent concussions. as an actively playing rugby union player, I have had one of my teeth knocked out that has been inside a proper fitting mouth guard.

There should be a sanction, but it’s never enforced for some reason.

A very basic guide but useful nonetheless. Perhaps th 5 yard line in front of the try line could have been included and what happens when a defending player has the ball over the try line. Stuff about mauls starting after a lineout would have been goo too. And calling a mark...
First, I don't understand the logical reason for throwing the ball perpendicular when a line-out occurs, so it doesn't matter which player of team A or B is throwing. So a player can't throw to his own mates. So the referee (a neutral person) could do it as well, or is it allowed to slightly throw the ball a bit to the left or right?
Second, what's the reason for a scrum, a player of Team A or B is, obviously, throwing the ball slightly to his own teammates. So it would make sense to just start the game, and somebody is just throwing carrying or whatever the ball like a typical gameplay. Can somebody explain to me the reason for a scrum, I mean It exists for a reason, but I do not see the reason immediately.
It restarts the game
The team throwing the ball in has the advantage of knowing what the throw is going to be (assuming it doesn't go wrong). The forwards will have rehearsed various options for throwing to the front of the line out, the middle, the end and even a long throw beyond the lineout. They will be able to select different receivers and different lifters, (they can have dummy receivers as well. They will also have options for what the tactic is once they have the ball.The defending team has got to try to work out who is the target, where in the line and what they will do with it.
It has nothing to do with 'neutrals' taking the throw in highly-pressured match situations in front of big crowds with the game hanging in the balance. It is one of the iconic rugby set pieces that fans love to watch.
As for the scrum it was the absolutely central part of earlier versions of 'football' that involved the young men of a whole village against another village. The modern scrum is the evolved, cleaned-up version of all those old games/battles. Scrums are awarded for more than forward passes, they are also given for knock ons, accidental offsides, plus a team that has been awarded a penalty can opt to kick at goal, kick to touch or have a scrum from where the penalty offence was committed. Again it is one of the iconic set pieces loved by rugby fans; one of the contests within the overall contest.
It seems to me that you might prefer the Rugby League code version of the game (no line outs, scrums a mere formality, and no rucks or mauls either, although I think that would be your loss.
The lineout is to the advantage of the team throwing, they'll say words that indicate to their guys where it's going and maybe who needs to fake that it's them. As far as the scrum it resets the game but it keeps the ball in contest even if the team feeding has the advantage. A strong defensive scrum can drive the other team back and gain the ball.

Nope. You're not contesting the ball in the air. You'll just look silly and be a VERY easy target.
Which team takes the lineout? The team in possession? Which team has possession?
The team that doesn't send the ball out of the field throws the lineout (Supposedly in between of the two lines, but they usually try to throw it slightly closer to their line). The line who catches the ball is now in possession of it and will try to play it.
What is the difference between Soccer and football?
Same thing. Soccer is an abbreviation of Association football (using the soc in Association). Countries that use the word soccer do so to avoid confusion with another kind of football that these countries play, e.g. American football, or Australian rules football. Countries that call the game football (e.g. UK) may also use the term soccer - but this would be slang or informal use.
