    I signed up for my highschool rugby team today and I have no idea what I'm gonna do. I played defensive end for my football team so I might be a forward. Wish me luck boys

      Yes, if you're a defensive player - you're better off as a forward.
      If you like to push people around, the 'lock' position is probably best to suit your skills.

I'm a person who can really get into watching any sport, Australian rules football and rugby union were sports that looked interesting but as a North American previous attempts to get into the sports failed because I didn't know the rules. Thanks for another great video. I think us new American fans struggle with some of the more advanced rules of the game. In no particular order I think the rules that draw the most questions are: (1) what goes on at the bottom of the ruck and what governs the counter-ruck, (2) the different types of kicking into touch, and (3) why certain penalties are called when a scrum breaks down.

    • @boondoxroxsox
      @boondoxroxsox 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That doesn't just confuse Americans, it confuses any casual rugby watcher of any nationality. The scrums and rucks have become far too complex and they can often stop the free flowing nature of the game.

    • @basedbulgarian511
      @basedbulgarian511 ปีที่แล้ว

      The ruck has a few simple rules:
      - Don't use your hands to dig the ball out of the ruck
      - Stay on your feet if you want to be involved
      - Only enter the ruck from the front
      The way to win the ball in a ruck is to push opposing players away from the ball and/or dig it out with your feet

    • @basedbulgarian511
      @basedbulgarian511 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's three types of kicks into touch:
      - kick during play: if you kick the ball into touch during live play, the other team gets the throw in at a lineout at the spot where the ball crossed the touch line
      - 50-22: special type of touch kick where if you kick into touch from your own half into the opponent's 22, you get the ball at the lineout at the spot where the ball crossed the touchline.
      - At a free kick: for any penalty more severe than a knock on or forward pass, the team awarded the penalty has the option to free kick down the field for territory gain. A free kick into touch awards the ball at the lineout to the team awarded the penalty.

    • @basedbulgarian511
      @basedbulgarian511 ปีที่แล้ว

      The scrum has a bunch of penalties, but the main ones are
      - no standing up
      - no falling down/stay on your feet
      - no "wheeling" the scrum: when a team pushes harder on one side more than the other and it results in the scrum rotating

    I've been watching the Six Nations to try and get my head around the rules before the World Cup but I still get slightly confused about why players sometimes deliberately kick the ball out of bounds. Is this some sort of tactical thing or what?

    • @NinhLyUK
      @NinhLyUK  9 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Hi Henry 52
      Excellent question!
      If a player is awarded a penalty (but they're too far away from successfully scoring), they can choose to kick the ball in touch (out of the playing area).
      The rules stipulate that after a Penalty, the team with the Penalty will retain possession of the ball. In this case, after the ball is kicked into touch - they are awarded a Line-Out from where the ball left the field of play.
      Hope that helps? Be sure to share and subscribe :)

      Henry 52 Any time!

    • @GwresYnKernow
      @GwresYnKernow 9 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Henry 52 Additionally, if you're on your own side of your own 22 meter line ("in your own 22"), you can kick the ball out and get the lineout from where it went into touch, even if it's not a penalty. You'll see teams doing this quite often. However this only applies if the opposition brought the ball into your 22 to begin with. The most common time you'll see this is if the opposition kicker messes up and the ball doesn't make it into touch, the defending fly half or fullback will usually return the kick rather than run with the ball, as it's safer (unless he's a Kiwi. New Zealand will run with the ball in most circumstances because even their fullbacks are built like tanks).
      You're not allowed to run back over your own 22, then kick the ball into touch. That'd be a lineout to your opponents from where you kicked the ball.
      Hope that's not too confusing. :)

    Hi. Thanks for making this nice video! I still don't understand why sometimes players will just randomly kick it to the other team, when they have plenty of room to run it up the pitch.
    An example of what confuses me is shown at the end of this video. The teams are kicking the ball back to the opposing team even though the player with the ball has plenty of room to run it upfield. Will you be kind enough to shed light on this? :)

    • @NinhLyUK
      @NinhLyUK  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Kelly Delinger. Excellent question!
      The 'kicking back and forth to each other' is very confusing for complete beginners to understand.
      In Rugby Union, sometimes better field position is better than possession of the ball.
      Teams will try to force the other team back in order to make them make a mistake at their end of the field (resulting in a penalty), in order to try and win the ball at their end of the field and having a shorter distance to run and score, or to give their team time to change formation going forward.
      The kicking back and forth is almost like a little chess game to see who can get better field position or who can make the other team make a mistake (for example: knocking-on, which is common when catching kicks).
      Hope that helps? Thanks for stopping by, be sure to share this video and subscribe :)

  • @Anime4Lyfee
    @Anime4Lyfee 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Questions. If a player doesn't have the ball and gets tackled (deliberately), is that allowed? And scrums are essentially only done when the ball goes in touch? Are rucks/mauls not also (technically) scrums?

    • @StarLeo_
      @StarLeo_ 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You can not tackle a player without the ball. Doing so is dangerous and could result in you getting sent off the field with a ban.
      A ruck and maul are very different to a scrum. A scrum only happens whena forward pass happens or when the team knocks the ball on. Then the 8 bigger players of each team lock together in a scrum which is a much more structured play. A ruck and maul happen in the middle of open play and anybody can join them. There can be any amount of people that compete in a ruck or a maul, but a scrum must have all 8 of your teams players in it and only happes after a stoppage of play.

    I'm an American and a rugby match is coming to a stadium very close to where I live. It only says "Rugby", not "Rugby Union" or "Rugby League". Based on another of Ninh's videos, simply "rugby" is probably union. That said, would I enjoy myself if I went to the game?

    • @NinhLyUK
      @NinhLyUK  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Christopher Allen I think so. You have to keep an open mind about Rugby Union, as it's NOT like American Football. After watching a game or two, you'll appreciate the raw power it takes to play the game solidly for 80 minutes.
      Now if you watch Rugby League - it's virtually a non-stop version of American Football ... kind of.

      +Christopher Allen Rugby is generally Rugby union... and you would LOVE a game... it's extremely physical and demanding. I play competitively at 57 years old... the second oldest in our club... and it takes a huge amount of work to stay in condition for it.

    I find the number of rules that are not applied in rugby, most interesting. I played first class rugby in the 80's at position hooker. A. I recently read the rule that the ball should still be thrown into the scrum in the middle and straight. It simply does not get applied. Today the scrumhalf's can just as well throw the ball straight to his backline. This is funny. No art for the hooker to win a tight head. Teams should select three props. B. The rule is when any player throws the ball into a line out, his feet should be outside the playing field. I saw some players standing inside the line when they throw the ball in. C. At kick offs players are almost always in front of the ball, without action from referees. D. If the spot where a receiver of a ball receives the ball, is in front of the spot where the player passed the ball to him, it is a forward pass. Some "clever" people reason that the direction of the hands establish a forward pass or not. That is not the rule. It seems like a bit of chaos to me. Every rugby match I watch, these rules get broken all the time.

    Nice explanation! Although I don't fully understand the "knock on" rule :( Could you please say a few more word on this? Thank you

    • @NinhLyUK
      @NinhLyUK  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Lev Levjesrcni Yes of course!
      In Rugby (both kinds), you can run forwards with possession of the ball, and you may kick the ball forwards.
      But any time the ball goes forwards that's not a kick or running with it, is considered knock on (which is against the rules).
      So if you drop the ball and it goes forwards, it's a knock on.
      If the ball bounces off your chest and it goes forward, it's a knock on.
      If the ball is deflected off your arm from a bad pass and it goes forward, it's a knock on, etc.
      Hope that helps? Be sure to share this video and subscribe :)

    • @NinhLyUK
      @NinhLyUK  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Lev Levjesrcni
      Yes there is. There's several situations where there is offside in Rugby. Just type in 'offside in Rugby' and you'll get diagrams explaining this. Hope that helps?

    • @newremote

    If I lived in the England, this would be the sport for me. It looks like the most interesting and toughest sport that English people plays. I just think they should start wearing helmets, looks like they can get some serious head injuries.

    • @NinhLyUK
      @NinhLyUK  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Michael Willuz Believe it or not, the debate about helmets has been occurring more recently as concussions have been more commonplace. Having said that, it'd take a monumental change of attitudes to allow Rugby players to wear hardened helmets like they do in American Football. • @NinhLyUK

      Sometimes field position is better than possession of the ball.
      They'll boot it away to force the opposing team back.

  • @waxprophetic

      +BlazetheCreative I replied to one of your other comments regarding this fact. You should have explained the more subtle rules like offside or not rolling away or or not releasing the ball or player being off his feet and obstruction, to the untrained eye it would seem that rugby union is all about doing that
