People say its the worst film of the MCU; I wouldn't say that at all. I really enjoy this one. It's definitely not the best one either, but it's a very fun time, and the plot structure is actually one of the best in the MCU. The fact that it's all centered around Bruce Banner is great, because nothing feels like it's as filler content. The villains are interwoven throughout the story so that they end up going through their own arcs and are sufficiently developed throughout the story. Honestly, with the smaller scale, the larger focus on the hero and the villain being successfully intertwined into the story in a realistic way, Black Panther feels a lot like The Incredible Hulk, in my opinion, done slightly better and made more memorable.

The tension here is what makes this film watchable, Bruce and the audience live in constant fear of the Hulk taking over. Plus the character work is strong, it's interesting to see how much Bruce has to give up because of the Hulk both personally and professionally. The Abomination is an interesting villain and I'd certainly be interested in him returning as a secondary villain, plus I'm surprised the setup for the Leader in this film hasn't been followed up.That said, I've never been a big fan of the look of the Hulk in this movie. The darker green colour scheme is aesthetically pleasing but the CGI here creates a monster that looks far more dated than a decade and the subsequent redesign of the character make this aspect of the film distracting on rewatch. Even the Abomination looks a bit silly as well. That said, it's a solid 7/10 movie that's a refreshing change of pace when watching the MCU. It's just a shame it may be the last Hulk solo movie we see for some time but at least Mark Ruffalo is getting better and better in his ensemble role.

Black sheep it is, but it is my favorite film of the entire MCU because of how different...and more importantly, how emotional it is. Edward Norton is the best Banner cinematically to date, and I prefer the darker, edgier tone as well as the look of this Hulk. I love this one immensely!

I really don’t get the dislike for this one. Even in the comments here I don’t know what to say. Most say they just don’t like it. A few say it’s boring. But there’s no actually specific examples of big issues.

I actually enjoyed The Incredible Hulk in re-watching more than I thought I would. I didn’t care for Liv Tyler as Betty Ross. I also thinking the editing they did to the movie hurt it and the insistence that the move be kept under 2hrs. The one I’m dreading is re-watching Thor. I felt it was boring when I saw in theater & I initially skip Thor:Darkworld. My favorite phase1 stand alone is Captain America:First Avenger

What younger viewers into the MCU of movies have to realize is the Iron Man & The Incredible Hulk were the beta test movies for Marvel Studios. There was a lot riding on the 2 movies back in 2008. Yes, there were the Spider-Man & X-men movies but each fizzled by their 3rd version. Marvel was trying something new with making the movies in house under there own studios. Ironman was a hit and the Incredible Hulk was so so. Probably why nothing went anywhere with the hinting of the Leader being created in the lab at end of Hulk movie.Instead Marvel Studios focused on getting Ironman 2 out which was 2 yrs later in 2010. Then focused on Thor & Captain America movies for 2011.Another thing the first 2 movies show is they let Jon Favreau have a bit more freedom with the Iron Man production and yet with the Incredible Hulk movie there was little too much pull back & forth with Edward Norton and others that hurt the movie in the end. The biggest thing is always the fight of having a movie come in at under 2 hrs. The Incredible Hulk really deserved an extended cut version where it probably would be 2 & 1/2 hours long. Take a look at the deleted extras on the Incredible Hulk dvd. There are some deeper scenes that would have given better detail to the story of the Hulk if left in. That’s the only problem with the editing/cutting room floor as they call it🤕

Great, post man. I have seen a lot of criticism/vitrol levied at Marvel, namely during Phase one. My take on Phase one movies is that like comic books, they are issue zeros. Basically, origin stories, designed to get the audience interested and hopefully invested in order to go about doing more challenging storylines. The Incredible Hulk, I need to rewatch(expect my review on this page sometime this week), I remember liking it but seeing it as the weakest Phase one movie. To me, it felt very dragged out and while I loved the cast, it just felt something was missing.
No doubt, I see now it is because this movie was butchered in the editing room. Either way, my thoughts on this movie could change like for example, Iron man 3 which I have found a newfound appreciation due to Civil War as it perfectly deconstructs how much of a mess Tony Stark is.

Actually, one of my favorites in the whole MCU. I rewatch it every now and then. One of the best actors of the late 90s/early 2000s in Edward Norton playing one of the best characters in the world of entertainment. The best looking Hulk, including the one we’ve seen since the Avengers. Of course, since Disney bought Marvel, they’ll never use that version of the superhero, considering it looks like a real monster. The villain’s path to the transformation of Abomination is beautiful, as the director sets a lot of pieces in the way towards the creation of Hulk’s counterpart. The weakest part of this film is Banner’s love life with Ross and General Ross himself. It takes over the movie for too long, but the final fight is enough to make this movie a classic for me in the superhero genre.
Extra credentials: threatening villain, great action sequences

I recently rewatched "The Incredible Hulk" because I too am doing a rewatch of the MCU. I'd give it a C or a 7.4/10 because it kind of moved a little slow and the actors in the movie were not used to their full potential. I have seen each of these actors do better in other movies ie Edward Norton. Still enjoyable though and that final fight is one of my favorites in the MCU.

This movie, I agree is a black sheep in the MCU. To be honest; when I saw the trailers; I actually thought it was a sequel to the Ang Lee Hulk movie. A movie I remembered seeing for my thirteenth birthday and actually fall asleep at. Yeah, so I skipped it. i I remembered finding it okay. I need to rewatch it again, but to me I just felt like the movie dragged. Also, the CGI on the Hulk; while I like the face; even then I wasn't sold on the design. I actually prefer Avengers and Ragnarok's design for him.
Overall, it honestly felt like Marvel forgot about the Hulk movie, with only tidbits from Avengers and more recently Civil War/ Ragnarok which I am glad. Overall, I need to rewatch this movie but I still see it as the weakest Phase one movie.

This movie is underrated! Hulk and Spidey were ways my favorite superheroes and I felt this movie was terribly overlooked. Norton had a good performance, and Hulk was presented close to the Bixby tv show, which I loved as a kid. The score was great, and film was fasted paced. I still really like the film, the score is actually my favorite part! I wish he was in Avengers but Rufflo was a great replacement. Ang Lee Hulk I hate now upon rewatching.

I really enjoyed it and I am glad you included it in the MCU ranking. Ed Norton was actually amazing as Banner, perfectly capturing the weakling, yet smart scientist who looked emotionally lost. I also loved Roth and Hurt were great in their roles. Liv Tyler as Betty was horrible however. She was either screaming too loud or whispering too quitely.

Just watched this today and I have no clue why people hate on it so much. It's a pretty good movie, but I think the issue is that it does not have much in common with the MCU. (Not just Edward Norton not being a part of the movie anymore, but just not many mentions to anything at all until Tony at the end.) However, I liked it a pretty good amount and would give it an 8/10.

The hulk is my favorite hero of dc and marvel. When I first watched the Incredible Hulk of 2008 I was 3 and just wanted to see banner hulk out. Now that I am 12 and rewatched it in 2018 I realized why people didn’t like it so much. But it’s still my favorite mcu movie. The final battle is what I think the best battle of the mcu. The hulk was the best looking hulk. The long hair is badass with the dark green skin and the blue pants. The banner was what I thought was ok. I don’t feel like ruffalo fits in as banner because banner is supposed to be serious!! Ruffalo is to fun and jolly to be banner. But at the same time Norton is a little too serious. He always has a straight face. But the battles. We’re awesome. The hulk vs the army on campus. Was amazing to watch. I think I give this film a 4.2/5

Another nod to the TV show is Bruce falling out of the helicopter being a direct homage to a similar moment in The Death of The Incredible Hulk. Also, the iconic theme tune plays when he's wandering around South America if I'm not mistaken.

It would not matter if it wasn't in the MCU, but that doesn't make it a bad movie. I still had a good time watching it, just not as much as all the others. If there was anything that was bad for me was the fact that we don't see Hulk all that much, (but that makes the times where he does turn a whole lot more exciting!)

Years passed and I just forgot about it and considered it the worst MCU movie. I watched it a second time because I was marathoning MCU and my opinion still stood. I kept saying that it’s my least favorite MCU movie. Watched it for the third time recently because I wanted to see if my opinions still stand and I actually thought it wasn’t that bad. Sure it’s still bottom three for MCU but the action isn’t so bad. I do think it’s better than Iron Man 2 now

I rewatched this yesterday (like Iron Man, for the first time in many years) and I think this movie is really good. It's MUCH better than that 2003 movie that we don't talk about. I think it's unfair that this is considered the "black sheep" of the MCU. Tonally it's the most different. There's little to no humor at all and it's far more serious than the rest of the MCU. The Abomination is one of the weaker villains of the MCU (again it's one of the MCU's favorite cliches of using the "evil version of the hero" villains). The fight is entertaining and while the CGI looks dated today, it doesn't look terrible (though comparing to 2003's Hulk, it looks incredible (pun intended)). Another thing I like is the references to the MCU. The Super Soldier Serum references were neat, the deleted opening with Captain America in the ice, and then Stark telling Ross "but that Super Soldier project WAS put on ice for a reason" (pun intended, I guess).
One thing I still wonder about is what happened to Betty Ross? General/Secretary Ross returns in Civil War, and in Age of Ultron, Stark and Thor mention Pepper and Jane, so why does Bruce never mention Betty at any time? When ranking this one, I think it's one of the weaker MCU movies but I still really enjoy it.

I hadn’t seen this movie in a very long time. This movie is fine to good but I love the tone of this movie. This to me is a hulk movie. I love mark ruffalo more so when it comes to playing Banner (but Norton does a fine job) but the look, tone, and action of this hulk (though maybe limited or small scale) I find...:forceful/powerful while stuff in avengers looks cool I don’t find it powerful or as powerful and for that reason I find much superior to anything we’ve gotten since then. This Hulk is big, scary and feels powerful. The villain is also fine to good and I think it’s a very enjoyable film. Side note I like this hulks haircut more then what he sports in Thor lol.

So I saw this film in the theaters, Summer 2008. Haven’t seen it since and I hardly remembered it. I watched it again today and I was pleasantly surprised.
I found it refreshing compared to the modern day mcu films with less humor and more emotional stakes. Banner felt like a truly tragic hero in this film versus the sidekick he’s been relegated to unfortunately.
Loved Tim Roth, he sold it. Gen. Ross was a stand out. Ed Norton was fine. My biggest issues are Liv Tyler who seems to be miscast and terrible, terrible dated looking CGI, which is amazing to think how far we’ve come in 11 years. The CG wasn’t all bad but especially in the final fight it was almost hard to watch. Overall, it was great, just wish more of the recent mcu’s would be more serious and compelling like this one.

    @NipsnTips1099 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I love your review for this film. It’s very fair and well-thought out. Also, i wanna state my only complaint about The Incredible Hulk:
Edward Norton and Liv Tyler are both very depressing actors in my opinion. Marvel movies usually have a male and female protagonist pair, and their dynamic is always important. They keep the audience engaged with their quipy dialogue and exchanges. Unfortunately, Norton and Tyler just don’t have that vibe. They always play sad and emotional characters, and thus they don’t keep audiences tuned in as well as Cap & Peggy, Ant-Man & Wasp, Thor & Valkyrie, Stark & Pepper, etc.
(I’m mainly referring to Norton’s memorable performance in Fight Club, and Tyler’s Arwen character in the LOTR trilogy)

I think it’s a good thing it doesn’t have humor. The direction they went for the Incredible Hulk is a unique creative choice that I enjoyed. If you were watching a werewolf, monster movie, would you expect there to be humor or jokes because they made a fugitive werewolf movie just swap out the werewolf for the hulk and I love it.

so for all who have the 2-disc dvd, or just the blu-ray version, i will say, please watch the 45 minutes if deleted scenes, yeah one of them should maybe be cut, but is has an fucking amazing tie-in to Spider-Man: Homecoming(No joke) and some of the deleted scenes, does has something that needed to be trimmed, but other then that, the around 43-44 minutes that are useable would maybe not make the movie Iron man 1 great, but it would not have been the Black sheep that is it today.

so the scene where he gets everywhere with pizza, when he get's to a room they is only one person there, a nerd with glasses, who talks to Bruce like he is a god for brining pizza. That guy is the same guy that plays Peter Praker's main teacher in Spider-Man Homecoming.

I'd like to see a new hulk movie. I feel like I barely know anything about the character from watching modern MCU movies. It'd be great to see more about his personal adventures and struggles with villains rather than always being an overpowered sidekick.

I'll say B. Some of it I found mediocre, but a lot of it was good. But I loved the final fight. It was just so brutal and no holds bar. And when Hulk rips Abominations elbow out of his arm and stabs him in the chest with it........Dude the fact that I just typed that, saying it was in a film, is just insane.

I know I'm kinda late, but I realized a mistake in your description.
    Iron Man (2008)
    The Incredible Hulk
    Iron Man (2010)
    Thor (2011)
    Captain America: The First Avenger
    Marvel's The Avengers (2012)
    Iron Man 3
    Thor: The Dark World
    Captain America: The Winter Soldier
    Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)
    Avengers: Age of Ultron
    Ant-man (2015)
    Captain America: Civil War (2016)
    Doctor Strange (2016)
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
    Spider-man: Homecoming
    Thor: Ragnarok
It says Iron Man twice, once where it's supposed to be, but it also says it where Iron Man 2 is supposed to be.
    Hope this helps :P

‪The Action: The scenes where bruce banner turns in the hulk are good. The first time it is in Brazil, and it got a horror element because you don’t see the hulk. The second scene is in the universaty and you see the true power of the hulk and it got a little bit of humor in it.‬ The third scene is the fight with abamonation. It is a really good fight scene. The scenes between are a bit boring.
The Actors: Edward Norton as Bruce Banner is not as good as Mark Ruffalo. The movie would be better if Mark Ruffalo played in it. Liv Tyler plays Bruce Banners love interest, Betty Ross. We never see her in a movie again, and that is a shame. Tim Roth is good for the Abomanation and William Hurt plays general Ross good. I am glad they putt general Ross in Captain America Civil War. It gives the Incredible Hulk a connection with the Incredible Hulk. I also love Ty Burrell as an actor but I feel like he doesn’t belong in this movie. Overall, this movie is the most underrated mcu movie. It is a decent movie but most of the other mcu movies are better. There are good scenes and some less scenes. The movie is still very enjoyable. It is on my #16th place.

I freaking love this movie. Is so underrated. Is a shame Marvel hasn't made a sequel. And they made a trilogy to everything else. Just because it would have to be distribute by Universal instead of Disney. Not sure what's the problem. They made a deal with Sony to make Spider-Man movies.
On the campus there was a student called McGee. And Jack McGee was the name of the reporter who was always following him on the show. They showed him on tv and then they said McGee who happens to be a reporter to the school newspaper. The intro of the movie was another homage to the show. Because the intro was telling the backstory of what happened in the pilot. The machine used in that is similar to the one on the show. Interesting, according to the director his choice was Mark Ruffalo but Marvel insisted on Edward Norton. He eventually worked with him on Now You See Me.

Finally an FF ranking soon. Good vid, I actually like this movie a good bit. I probably rank it above Iron Man 2 &3 and the first 2 Thors. The chase scene at the beginning was really good and the relationship subplot made a lot of sense for the movie. And like you said, the world building wasn't excessive, like other movies in the MCU. I don't know why every one thinks it's boring. 8/10.

I had a very mixed opinion on this film in the first place, but it’s what happened after, replacing Norton with Ruffalo, that make it my least favourite of the MCU - to the point where I personally consider it non-canon, while acknowledging the events as canon. It’s interesting to look at it as its own thing, though.

If you watch it right after Iron Man, it flows really well and is a good tonal shift from Iron Man. Tony Stark is in your face and well known and out in public, but Bruce has to be low profile and blend in. The Incredible Hulk also looks like a Marvel movie in terms of cinematography and humor and character development.

I Wished the film was more characters driven, Cause I hated how they treated it as just an action adventure film, which wasn't bad, it just needed more character moments, I think the hulk should be more character driven, then action adventure, that's what they are missing with the newer hulk, they don't have that inner mentality between Bruce and the Hulk, I mean they sort of go into it, but they should really go for it in endgame

A step back, but far from bad. The Incredible Hulk is a slightly over hated movie in my opinion. The characters a good and the story works fine enough, I feel people get caught up in the superfluous details and judge the overall picture on those things, such as the drab color pallet or the fact that literally everyone looks greasy as hell. But structurally, it's a well made and well shot movie. The writing can be hammy at times but it works, and the way it slowly reveals more details about the first incident is pretty engaging. The only real flaw with the movie is that the main character has a goal that runs contrary to the audiences, Bruce wants to suppress the Hulk while the audience wants to see it wreck shit. However the ending does marry these wants pretty nicely, even if it is just action schlock. I like how the Abomination is power hungry akin to a drug addict, as opposed to the righteous power hungriness that Red Skull showed. He is a good enough villain on top of General Ross.
A fine movie with good characters and a working story.
    6.8/10

I know I’m in the minority. But while I’ll admit the Hulk from Avengers and on was better. I think Norton is by far the better Bruce Banner. He even looks more like the Banner from the comics. Ruffalo is absolutely terrible in infinity war. Him slapping himself was cringe worthy. This movie was I think before it’s time. I think it gets a bad rap because Norton was replaced. If they had the CGI they have now, the 3rd act would have been way better.

I do think that this is the worst MCU movie. The movie is based on action, but the action isn’t great because the CGI is not that great. I do like the last battle, but my problem is that Abomination, the main villain, isn’t the main villain until the last 20 minutes of the film, and you don’t quite understand his motives. This movie could also fit humor in perfectly, but doesn’t take that opportunity. I’m not saying every movie needs humor, just that this movie kinda falls flat without it. And the Bruce Betty storyline doesn’t fit

  • @officialREZNIIKZ

    Things to note:
•I feel like Tim Roth had a great performance in this one. He’s a fantastic actor and he stole the show. Edward Norton feels extremely miscast
•The CGI and pacing are the things that lower this one for me, though. The CGI is just sloppy and the pacing (or lack of) makes for a lot of boring interactions.
•The tone is completely fine, in fact on re-runs of the MCU it’s a nice change of pace. One thing to note though is that the whole thing seems to have a nasty green filter. I don’t know if it’s the camera they used, after-effects or something else entirely but it just looks off and uncomfortable to look at, not the dark and gritty that they were going for.
All in all it’s a perfectly competent movie but it just lacks the MCU feel.
    6.5/10 as a stand-alone film
    4/10 as an MCU film

i like the movie, but i think Ang Lee's is more rewatchable. my only real problem with this movie is (apart from the recasting) The Hulk - for me it's the worst of the 3 animated Hulks. Ang Lee's Hulk varied greatly in quality - sometimes it looked great, sometimes awful, so i put it in the middle. Ragnarok's Hulk also varies greatly. very strange... enjoyed your review. looking forward to watching the rest of them (though a week is a long time to wait for each one). Happy New Year from Scarborough, England :-)

Y'all being super hard on this film. OF COURSE it doesn't seem connected to the MCU, it was made before the MCU knew what it was. This is one of the BEST of the Avengers solo films to me and I loved the climax. The big problem with Ang Lee's Hulk was that it was a damn drama. I didn't come to a comic book based movie to see a family drama yo! This film gave us exactly what we were looking for, Hulk smashing ish and going toe to toe with someone that could go--toe to toe with The Hulk. Stop blaming the film for what it isn't and accept it for what it is.

Agree about the humor lacking in the movie...that said, Ed Norton plays Bruce Banner as a very tragic figure, a man whose demons are literal and real...humor might have watered down that element of the character and felt out of place. Banner's life here is a non ending nightmare...nothing funny about that.
