You missed the big connection to the first Iron Man movie. In the opening scene Tony bumps into Ho Yinsen - the guy he ends up imprisoned with in the cave. Way back in the original film, Yinsen says to Tony 'you know we met once at a conference in Bern, Switzerland' to which Tony replies 'yeah I don't remember'. Then in the opening scene of this movie we see that exact moment in which they first met.

I unashamedly love Iron Man 3. I completely get why a lot of people don't but I personally really admire it for how different it is. Like you said, people are always quick to hate on Marvel movies for being too formulaic and predictable and yet when we get a really bold and daring film like Iron Man 3, there's just as much hate for it being too different and not enough like a Marvel movie!
I personally love the Mandarin twist because it was so audacious and caught everyone by surprise! Also, Ben Kingsley plays it so well! 'I wouldn't go in there for 20 minutes! Hu Hah!' I loved it, I was cracking up at all that stuff. Would a real Ben Kingsley Mandarin have been cool? Sure. But he also would've been just another generic evil terrorist that would've felt too cartoony and out of place in the more grounded modern context in which the MCU exists. Marvel wanted to get away from those old-fashioned stereotypes, it's the same reason they cast Tilda Swinton as the Ancient One - they didn't want that character to fall into the wise old Asian guy stereotype. Also, having the Mandarin be an actor hired by the real villain is so much more interesting and a fascinating concept that is quite scarily real when you think about it - what if the worst and most deadliest villains in the world aren't the people we see on the news everyday but are the people lurking in the shadows pulling the strings behind the false images they've created. It's a pretty scary thought.
Anyway, here's my full review if you're interested in my thoughts on the film as a whole: osullivanreviews.wordpress.com/reviews/iron-man-3-film-review/

I did like the Twist a lot, it took the film to whole different direction than I thought it was going into especially with the villain.
When we are first introduced to The mandarin we think we are getting something really dark and a super realistic villain, we think at the beginning of the film this is A very dark knight Ish movie but no when we get to that part where we find out about the mandarin the film goes into a lighter tone.
Now I think the idea of the terrorist Villain sounded very promising too and very relatable, like something we all recognize due to 24 and other spy series like Homeland, at the beginning I thought the film was going there, that it was gonna be a super serious Iron Man movie. but after the Mandarin meeting is like Shane is reminding us that no this is not the dark knight, 24 or homeland this is a very comicbook book movie with humor and outlandish fun scenes.
I think in that moment Shane Black is telling us no don’t take this too seriously this is a film to have fun.
I like this movie as a whole because I take it as a big prank from Shane Black that we first think it’s gonna be a dark and gritty movie and then he reveals we are all suckers that we fell for that and we all have been punked lol 😂
Of course I love Robert Downey Jr as IronMan and we saw more of his friendship with the new War Machine and now are more familiarized with Don Cheadle as Rhodey.

I had never seen this movie, so last week when I went into it I was expecting the worst, and honestly I was pleasantly surprised. I prefer it over iron man 2, but I like iron man 1 more. I think me expecting it to be absolutely awful really made it enjoyable. I don’t think it’s perfect but I think it’s a solid funny and comical film.

futurefilmmaker 39480 me too, I love the darker tone and the character development of Tony stark in this movie, I also liked the big twist and did not see it coming and I found it really funny and clever at the same time.
The action sequences are great and tense, It's a really well shot movie as well but what I actually really enjoyed the most was the lack of the actual Iron man suit, it focused on Tony building stuff to survive and he uses his skills instead of realing on the suit for most of the movie.
It's my 2nd favourite in the trilogy and my 3rd favourite film in the MCU.
      Really fun time for me.

Whereas the Avengers got me into the MCU, this was the movie that made me realize I was a fan. I know there are people who hate the Mandarin twist, but as someone who didn't read the comics it didn't bother me too much. I got so wrapped up in Tony's character and just found him so admirable dealing with all of this heavy stuff and still coming out on top.

And the Mandarin with no powers of rings wouldn't make a great third act villain and the comic version was a boring and racist version from the 60s. The "flaws" Tony made was part of his character since he's reckless. The only problems I saw was that Killian (a background character in comics) was made leader of AIM which was a missed opportunity like Hydra originally was before the winter soldier

Winston Shih How do you feel about the Marvel One Shot, "All Hail The King" that shows Trevor in jail being interviewed by a guy pretending to be a reporter but actually works for the "real" Mandarin & kidnaps Trevor? Do you think that was good showing fans that there is a Mandarin in the MCU or do you think it was a cop out on the MCU's part trying to pacify angry fans? I think it's the latter, but if they do end up doing an actual Mandarin down the road I'll support it as long as its done well.

    • @anthonynolastname8517

they could have taken the racist stereotypes out of the Mandarine in the comics and still given us the Mandarine. I knew nothing about the comics mandarine before I watched this movie, then someone told me to looks it up and I found myself saying
"holy shit that was so cool, why didn't they just do that"
the comic book mandarine is much more than just a "racist stereotype" and I think your glossing over that.
the Mandarine is a master in the martial arts and a genius. not to mention the leader of the ten rings and literally has ten magic rings that could have done some pretty wicked shit on screen ( no more sci fi than extremis) they took the joker of the iron man universe and turned him into a punchline. if racial stereotype is all you see when you look at that villain then I really don't think you can look past that enough to see the potential in the greatest villain in the ironman rogues gallery. had they taken out the racism and built upon the most interesting aspects of the character this movie would have been the greatest I n the series. Shane black was more interested in making a Shane black movie and forgot to make an iron man movie.

This movie gets a really bad wrap but it's a great character study movie on Tony Stark and is one of my favorites of the series. In some ways it's even better than the first because it progresses Tony's story so much in series and shows growth.

I actually love this movie, I remember leaving the theatre in awe and loving the hell out of it! The final battle is easy one of my top 3 Marvel fights of all time.
The worst part about the movie is easily the villian. Killian does suck and yeah it would have been amazing to get the Mandarin in his full potential, but I didn't hate the twist until Killian was what we got in return.
Despite that negative this movie is awesomely funny and entertaining, and it's my 5th favorite MCU movie, I always want to watch it
Edit: 6th favorite, I like Ragnarock more

    I've had a theory...
MAYBE it was the mandarin pretending to be a drunk british actor called Trevor Slattery!!! It was his cover, even Killian and Savin didn't realise, and it's all part of his utimate plan...
But that's just a theory. *A FILM THEORY!*

  • @joaoandrade3961
    @joaoandrade3961 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I actually like this movie. The Mandarin twist is pretty interesting (with Killian's idea of anonimity) and played extremely well by Sir Ben Kingsley.
I only think that they could have given the Mandarin a connection (maybe even leadership) to the Ten Rings (the terrorists that captured Stark in Iron Man 1) and that could take a toll on Tony, giving him an emotional connection to the villain. But that would imply a major change of direction in the movie and its story, and, along with the PTSD from Avengers plotline, it could have overstuffed it...
But I think it's great as it is!.. 👍🏻

  • @KNDAWG74
    @KNDAWG74 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

I Love Ironman 3! I know that's not a popular opinion. I understand a lot of diehard fans hating The Mandarin swerve but what they did with it making him a face of terrorism for the public while Killian ran things behind the scenes was awesome. Plus Tony Stark having to work through his issues of PTSD after the events of The Avengers was really deep. You don't see that in a lot of superhero movies & it was a great continuation of the character arc of Tony Stark. It's not a perfect movie, not even my favorite Ironman movie but doesn't deserve anywhere near the amount of hate it gets from fans, especially the fans who cry that they want these movies to veer off of the norm & take risks & when they do they absolutely hate that they took risks with their movies!

I love iron man 3, sometimes I even think it might even be my favorite Iron man movie. Im perfectly fine with the twist because to me, the mandarin was never an iconic, interesting, nor a thematically appropriate enough (for Iron man) villian for them to feel like he had to be the same as he is in comics. Killian and his extremis virus are much more suited to this movies theme of using advanced technology and artificial means as a fix for past trauma (Tony coping with his PTSD and existential dread by endlessly building suits; Killian and the wounded soldiers using extremis to heal their wounds and, in the case of Killian, his imperfections).

Personally I disliked this film for many reasons:
Firstly and obviously the Mandarin twist. He was being teased throughout the film as a mysterious threat only for him to be Trevor which is a big slap in the face imo.
Secondly Killian definitely should not have been the main villain and as Sean said, the whole fan turned villain cliche is done to death.
Thirdly the pacing feels off as it's at a moderate pace until Tony loses the suit then it just drags on and gets really boring for a while.
However Tony is great(as usual) and I do like the way he suffered from PTSD and how that came about from the first avengers film. But overall this film is definitely far down on the list of MCU movies.

Personal favorite of the Iron Man movies. I don't think the Mandarin was ever interesting. He was generic over the top wants to destroy everything kind of bad guy with no visible motivation. Killian had a bit of a motivation in that Tony straight up put him in a place to commit suicide. I don't think Killian was handled perfectly, but I found him to be significantly more interesting than the Mandarin himself.

Ranking of all movies you reviewed
    1. Iron Man (love it so much. Robert Downey Jr killed the role. He's so charismatic, he can play the hero really well and then my favorite aspect playing the asshole aspect. The villain was pretty good nothing amazing though. Loved the action and music as well.)
    2. Avengers (love it. All the characters mesh well together. The action scenes are top notch. Loki is cool, though I don't enjoy him as much as others do. I think that Vulture is the best villain. )
    3. Iron Man 3 (really enjoy the film. Liked the PTSD aspect. The twist doesn't bother me because I don't read comics)
    4. First Avenger (As a history buff I love the WW2 aspect, loved Chris Evans being a badass, Red Skull was a cool villain)
    5. Iron Man 2 (villain sucks I'll admit. But I enjoy the action. I don't hate it but it's just good. )
    6. The Incredible Hulk (The black sheep of the MCU, I enjoy the film. Though it is forgettable. I enjoyed Edward Norton. Villain kinda sucked)
    7. Thor (I don't like the first two Thor films that much. I find them boring, not as enjoyable as the others. Jane and whatever the girl name is are annoying. Thor 3 though is so amazing)

Iron Man 3 is a fantastic movie to me. I think it's the number 1 most underrated movie in the MCU, and (unpopular opinion) the Mandarin twist was freakin great!!!! I think it works because it prevents us from getting another generic villain, and gives us something different. And I think that Killian, although not great, was a decent villain. He gets too much hate as a villian as does the movie, and overall I'd give it a solid 8/10.

This is easily my favourite Iron Man movie. I love every character and the villains are, in my opinion, really good. The action is without a doubt the best action of any iron man movie and shows Iron Mans REAL power, his intelligence. Tony Stark dealing with PTSD is easily my favourite arc of Tony Stark, as it feels so real and grounded. The acting is great and I love the humor.
The Mandarin twist is a devisive point. I liked it, because I think it fits the movie. I don't get when people hate this movie, because the Mandarin isn't reprised as he is in the comics. If that is so, these people should HATE both Guardians Films, because they are not like in the comics

I HATED this movie when I first saw it. i never left a theater so pissed in my life. However, I have gotten over the twist to an extent...I still hate it, but there are other things to enjoy in this movie. One thing you cannot say about Iron Man 3 is that this is not a typical MCU film, it doesn't follow th MCU formula. It's well made, well directed and it's a nice change of tone from the other MCU films. It's still near the bottom for me, but I have warmed up to it a little since i first saw it.

I understand why people hate this movie, but honestly, it's one of my favourites of the MCU. I loved the twist, and I love the entire premise. My biggest issue with it is easily the ending (and by the ending, I mean the part of him blowing up the suits and getting rid of the reactor)

The Iron Man trilogy really has gotten a bad wrap huh? Another movie I don't think deserves the hate, what a ride. Sure there was some wasted potential, but unlike with Ivan, they take it in another direction that, like it or not, works in the movie. I judge this movie as it is, not as I would like it to be. The Mandarin, as he was, does not introduce any thematic meaning to Tony, nothing that serves his arc. Perhaps Killian and The Mandarin could have been merged into one character, regardless what it does do is make Killian a more threatening villain, by adding layers to his scheme. Killian is made more competent through this twist. I know I know, I was upset too, but watch the movie with the twist in mind, and think about how it affects the story. I have a feeling it won't feel too bad.
Now I really have no other major problem with the movie, Tony Stark is amazing as always, though this may well be my favorite of his performances thus far, perhaps tied with the first Iron Man. The rest of the characters are great too; Pepper, Happy, and Rhodes all do a great job. The action is really great too, having Tony jump in and out of the suits is entertaining as hell, even if it makes the suites feel brittle. Iron Man 3 concludes Tony's journey, what he said back in the first Iron Man is finally true, he is Iron Man, with or without the suit. Just as you can create your demons, you can create a better you.
Iron Man 3 is great ending to the Iron Man trilogy.
    9.2/10

I like what this film is going for-Tony stark in his prime, getting paranoid to the point where he can’t sleep. I also like how it’s more story based than the first two. I think the ending is great-I know a lot of people do t like it because he continued being iron man in the avengers films, but I thought it was a nice way to end the trilogy
Although I think there are a lot of plot holes and it’s lacking in action (I didn’t mind it too much though). I didn’t mind the villain-I know that a lot of people hated the villain, but I will admit it wasn’t a great choice to put him in this film,he just doesn’t belong in the film in my opinion.
Overall I thought it was a fun watch and I think they made it because they didn’t want fans thinking he was just a guy in a suit
    As a grade I’d give it a B

The thing I love about this movie (in the context of the entirety of the MCU) is that this is the first movie in phase two, and it's the first one that seems to break formula. I think so much of the argument against the MCU is that it is "formulaic." Phase one was absolutely. But after that... I think youve had 12 fairly different films. This is why I'm a fan of the MCU. Even if I disagree with the twist and really believe that we did the Kingsley Mandarin a huge disservice by actually making him Trevor... the fact was we let Shane Black give it a shot

Extremis came back in 'Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'. And Trevor came back in 'All Hail the King', which (spoiler alert) revealed that the REAL Mandarin is pissed at him for "taking his name" and has a Ten Rings operative capture him. Still haven't gotten that resolution, maybe in a 'Doctor Strange' sequel?

Rewatched this last night. I’m on a marvel binge and I actually really liked it. I remember hating it. In context with the MCU it really is a good movie. The Mandarin twist I thought it was great in the context of the story. I know nothing about iron mans villains so I didn’t care that they did the twist. It worked for me. Pepper was great in this one too. 2nd best iron man. I really like it

I enjoyed the film when I first watched it upon theatrical release - had no issue the the Reveal.
But not once have I felt the need to revisit it.
But I find that with a lot of films now - that may say more about me at the age I am more than anything else though.
I’ve bought probably hundreds of blu rays of films I really enjoyed , but yet never put them in.

Still better than Iron Man 2...The movie is solid not bad as the bottom of the franchise but I would'nt say It's in the Top 10 MCU films.. Action & Acting is on point story was something diffrent and yea,The Mandarin...The worst thing about the film that it came after The Avengers which was boombastic and we were expecting as great chapter in the MCU and that's why it made shit numbers cash...The movie is good though for the films you've reviwed for now (I think 7?) It's like 3rd or 4th in the MCU for now

Not a fan of the twist in this one, however as a movie is does it's job well. I love the Tony Stark Character and the kid gets some laughs. However it's such a let down that the Mandarin, who was built up to be an interesting and unique villain, is just nobody. However it works well in the movie and helps Tony's arc along.

The whole point of the movie was Tony Stark is iron man not his suits.......its different from most of the marvel movies which makes it age well....I have no problem with mandarin twist but they could have done it better and marvel movies has always been about the hero coming over his problems and beating the generic villain in the final battle until BLACK PANTHER
Upon a rewatch I realized Killian wasn't electro his motivation wasn't to destroy tony.......he was doing his own stuff until tony came in his way and the opening scene discribed his experience with tony and motivation to become better than himself and even his connection to Maya

Besides the villain being a waste of time, the characters just not feeling special besides Tony and maybe the kid, I think this is an OK movie, not good and certainly not bad. The whole perspective of “what would Tony Stark do if he had no Iron Man suit?” was very good. There is one thing that doesn’t fit, and it’s the way it connects with the future MCU movies. I don’t know. Nothing besides the continuous development of Downey Jr.’s character connects to the rest in my opinion.
Extra credentials: Ty Simpkins (kid), Iron Man-less Tony Stark
