- I got myself a Dayton DATS system V2 and thought i'd have a play with some old woofers you guys may have seen before on my channel over the years! Check out my Facebook page Barevids to see a bonus video of what my original twin 8" box was really like!
What?!?! Really interesting backstory with that 18” driver. I really love owning speakers that I have heard before owning them in other places, but that’s just the coolest thing ever. It’s basically a piece of history!!! The closest thing I’ve come to that is probably some interesting old speakers from a neighbors house, but not a speaker that millions have heard in action!
You're one of my OG youtube subs man, so glad to see this channel is still active and all those old woofers are still seeing some love! A lot of people would probably perceive a sentimental attachment to a speaker as silly but I totally get it, how could you not become attached to something that has brought you so many hours of musical enjoyment? haha! Keep up the good work man
woah. amazing dd woofers you got.
Just a quick note. You can't get accurate results when doing T/S params by setting the driver on a soft surface. A solid non-vibrating surface is a must. Also, the platform of the surface should not be much larger than the magnet. This might not be all that important to you, but if you want super accurate measurements for design work you may want to pay attention to the small details. It can make a difference. I use the DATS for t/s and zma, ARTA for frd. I then import the info into SpeakerWorkshop to design the x-over. I love the DATS. EDIT: Subed :)
How shit drivers with a vented pole piece? I've heard not to block the hole as it might alter results?
this video was awesome learned a lot. interesting from start to end even tho I didn't know most of it
Been a follower from like 07.. Goood times :) Still absolutely IN LOVE with the MS woofer
I had an old Rockford Fosgate RFR 1415, I sold it this year, I wasn't going to use it anymore and had nowhere to put it, really wish I could have kept it.
+barevids Regarding the Xmax at the ~22min mark. You could get yourself a (vernier) caliper, and use the depth probe to work out the Xmax if no spec is available.
Bodge together some sorth test rig where you have the caliper mounted above the cone, push the cone down while moving the depth probe down as well > zero it > let the cone rise and then push it up and see what's the Xmax.
Alternatively you could use a depth gage, there's various types around and if I'd have to guess, those with the T sort of shape would probably work best.
+Lagittaja Thats not a bad idea! That would give me Xmech as a result, but i still wouldn't know how much coil was left in the gap from those measurements. Its certainly gonna be the best guess ill have though! Thanks! :)
For mechanical resistance, a lower Qms is greater and means a higher Rms (resistance mechanical suspension) relative to the mass of the cone and whatever else. It is a parameter that tells you about the hysteresis losses in the surround and spider. A higher Qms will give you greater efficiency but less controlled resonances, as it functions like the shock absorber in car suspension.
Very interesting technical video, you have good videos with a lot of information :) keep them coming
Love my Sony xplod 15 inch ,has been going for about 15 years now ,
lol @ the screws stuck to the Xplod magnet @13:05
Keep in mind that MFG specs are not actual, but either an average if multiple drivers tested, or it could be exaggerated as I've seen several times.
It's for this reason i build enclosures generally based on actually pulled tsp as opposed to factory listed.
Omg i'm really interested in buying this software now!
Jesus Christ, I remember all of those.
+VeeDees Shame i dont still have things like the JVC... and the Impulse 12"s! Would have been good to check those out
+barevids hey plss me sub me I video subwoofer guys
S
+barevids god I remember the JVC
actually just "re-found" my old (pretty much the same as you had) JVC woofer
+barevids What happened to the JVC? Or the jved :P
Also do you still have those 2 aiwa woofers and the other random aiwa woofer that you had back in the day haha :D
what
I do remember that 18" celestion quite well. Ah, good old times :-D
I want that pioneer subwoofer!😍😍 I'm a huge pioneer fan!
Trent Andleton yeah that pioneer is impressive
I need that xplod
those dd woofers on the floor get my dd up lol
Absolutely awesome video! Your BB6 seems to work a lot better than mine, though. Jealous!
Qms should be high in a suspension that is not very lossy. A low Qms represents a lot of losses. A low Qes represents a strong motor provided the Fs is also high. Fs/Qes gives you some idea of motor strength relative to the cone mass.
DAMN THE MEMORIES
Pick up a copy of Vance Dickason’s Loudspeaker Design Cookbook, probably the best book ever written other than Richard Small’s (the S in TS parameters) thesis, by J.E Benson ( Theory and Design of loudspeaker enclosures) which is very heavy on pretty difficult mathematics... Vance’s book is very easy to follow because all of the equations are boiled down to only what you need, the original TS equations are in the back of his book though if you feel the need to cook your noodle...
how do you set up car subs at home (what products u use) :)?
The celestion subwoofer looks beat up and has some wear and tear on it but it still works it's seen better days
What is the name of that software? BB6 PRo?
Nice video!! thanks, how mutch did you pay on the DATS system?
i believe its around 30bucks?
the dust cap you can fix with a vaccum cleaner be very gentle thought
+GanG914 I did it with a vaccum on a 2.5 inch speaker
Hey can you find any old virtual technologies subs and box's????? Brother those where absolutely amazing back in 2000s the early 2000s they went out of business back in 03 ish. But they made the best box's period they was massive vented box's with VT on the top. I had a few of them and they was extremely loud the 15" VT sub and a VT box I think they was called the sledge hammer or something along those lines. But the subwoofer on the dustcap had a V over top of the T and underneath it it would say virtual technologies. The one I had was black and blue letters. It hit a 153 DB on a hcca 2500.1 mono block in my Jeep. They was intesne back then.. they cost 1,000 us dollars back then... If you can find any of the old virtual technologies subs ect please do a video on em I haven't seen em in years but they was bad ass
thank you, more videos like this, please :)
What is the program that you are designing the boxes with called? I`ve bought some cheap 8" woofers and some dome tweeters and thinking about making myself some speakers for home use.
+Tomas S Bass Box Pro 6 :)
maybe you could try this on the rotels
+Vangerino Vangerino Good idea, ill post the results on my Facebook page!
What is the 18 woofer? Model pls
Thanks! :D
My very first woofer was a 3.5" JBL computer satellite speaker sadly, i blew it:(
What is the box design software you are using called?
+FlamingBeatz Bass Box Pro 6 :)
What happened to the Alpine type s you had
+shotta for life Gave it to a friend!
You're mate was lucky I only use alpine good quality and awesome bass thats at a good price under £200
+barevids check my vid i made a short one with my alpine type r 15
How much you want for the 3in subwoofer. I really want it
SavageKing588 well, you can find those little subwoofers anywhere.
God you have big hands! You make the 10" look like an 8" and the 8"look like a 6".
Vlad Lucian and a 6" like a 4" and a 4" like a 2" and a 0" look like a -2" and a -2" look like a -4"
P. S I just got bored... 😂😂😂
What is that pioneer sub called
A Pioneer subwoofer
qual o site da loja eu acho esse piooner baas ? help !
omg finally i get to the test
Swear he says "I'm gay guys" at the start 😆 good video!
DDZ parameters
What is the name fore the Pioneer subwoofer?
how old are you kid?
Over 20
no offense, you sound like stewie from family guy
how?
I read up on the DATS but have been mortified at some of the comments. Seems to be as inaccurate as many a free design software!
I've compared it against manufacturers readings on a whole bunch of stuff I have here. I'm finding it very accurate!
This is the DATS V2 remember. I can't comment on the accuracy of the older v1 or w3.
barevids I knew you'd get back to me. Interesting video Sam. It's difficult, having been around testings and system software costing near as much as you parents house .. then picking a sub £100 testing set up .... er, hmm, yeah
I understand that for the 'enthusiast' this is about all there is, but like free software, doesn't mean i trust it!
On the plus side, I'm looking at a Sony xplod sub. Personally I would touch any Sony product at any level, however, you've piqued my interest.
Keep it going Sam, it seems we in the UK are a bit naff when it comes to half decent car audio/audio vids.
BTW I've seen DD have changed their site and their line up (yet again - facepalm) and the TS series is no longer the TS series?!? Again, I saw little if any difference in parameters between the TS series and the equivalent American series subs, but DD claimed and according to the published parameters, that they were optimised for sealed enclosures (it's about flippin time :) lol) ... never understood it.
Also, when are you going to do something about DD speakers. We see many vids on the subs, very little documented about the speakers. I'm talking the coaxials, Audiophile range and BC component set?
I will buy off you in the near future, just sorting some stuff out at the moment.
+utubecomment21 £800,000 test kit?? you gotta be kidding me...
Either way, even if this is 20% +/- off the true figures, its fun to play with and is teaching me a lot about ts params. Even just being able to find the resonant freq this fast is very useful. Not saying the results can be used to create absolutely bang on perfect enclosures, but for making sure a pair of speakers are going to work together well, or giving me a rough idea of what style box unbranded drivers will work in, its definitely worth it :)
barevids £800,000? I don't think the likes of Kef, B&W, Meridian, Martin Logan, Wilson, Steinway Lydoft use Dayton audio kit!
I agree with you, it's all fun, and in all seriousness, i think that's part of what's missing, or undocumented in the UK car audio scene.
However, i think there are some super, oversimplified myths about such parameters and enclosure design. But, like you say, it's about having fun, playing around.
But my personal approach is use such software to design and build first, and then test once the enclosure is implemented in it's listening environment, then adjust/rebuild, then test again. You don;t have to build 100 speakers to build up a more accurate picture of what's really going on, but i'd stay away from 'App' testing devices.
What about speaker reviews? You teased us with the 3" midrange ... throw me a frickin bone here
barevids And what about this ddaudio.com/ddownlow/dd-audio-introduces-dirty-30-behemoth/
The 12 inch sony xplod subwoofer is rated to actually handle 350 watts rms not 1200 watts rms 1200 watts rms is just it's peak rms power rating if you were to give it 600 watts or 800 watts it will burn up the voice coil on the 12 inch sony xplod subwoofer so yeah no way it can handle 1200 watts rms
He has a video of that sony explode doing 3x rms power
Yeah if you're planning on putting any kind of power to a subwoofer I wouldn't get a Sony Xplod anyway their shit their voice coils are decent but they're tinsel lead connections suck I've had several break at the connection to the voice coil like everyone is said a good budget woofer but if you're trying to put Power to something get a real sub
Give me a woofer !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!XD
Hey man could u sell some DD Zeds on Ebay so i could buy some of thoes subs i need some 10s for my truck i got a 1k kenwood amp i jus sont have the subs
nevermind
You sub you
You talk to fast bro
Quit yapping and play the damn woofers 😂
