  • Emily, one of our beloved Bright Lifers, has a significant anniversary coming up in a few days.
On April 29, 2017, Emily began Bright Line Eating.
And now, three years later, she is 165 pounds lighter and considers herself completely recovered from binge eating disorder.
I had the pleasure of speaking with Emily on this week’s Facebook Live interview, and it was an unforgettable experience. She shared openly about how she moved from deep shame and suffering to life-changing freedom.
Emily's story of personal redemption is inspiring no matter where you are on your Bright Line Eating journey, so I invite you to take the time to sit back, watch, and enjoy.

I'm nearly in tears. I feel like I've finally found my people and the solution to sugar addiction. I've tried fighting it for years with keto but have finally admitted to myself that isn't a sustainable way of life for me. I am so excited to be able to have oats, fruits and beans again.

"I need to imagine life with the thing so then I can just move on with life," Emily. Wow, that's a powerful statement. I cried many times through this because so much of it resonated with me. I want to be able to say that I can imagine the rest of my life without sugar and flour, but I am only 55 days in and my saboteur still whispers once in a while, "do you really think you can do this forever?" So, I still use the, "I don't know, but I can do it today." I hope when my brain heals completely, I can say forever. This is the first time I have heard Emily, and I am touch and so appreciative of her willingness to be so open in sharing her story and her thoughts. Thank you.

Intuitive eating & moderation is an ill concept. This interview is SO GOOD. Abstinence and restriction are not the same thing! Abstinence from poison is not extreme! 😂🙌

This interview spoke to me so deeply. I watched it twice with fascination. Alcohol has been a key factor in my binge eating. I've always tried to solve the food and drink separately and failed over and over. I never realized they could and should be solved together. I have begun abstinence and can now see a path forward to peace. I also was very moved by Emily's discussion of shame, grief, morality and even being introverted. I can't wait to read her book.

Thanks for sharing. Major truth bombs around 1:00 about food being like a lover, and the intimacy and seriousness of that relationship and corresponding grief during letting it go.

I left a doctor because he kept telling me to loose weight but didn't even try to help me loose the weight. I found another doctor. Low and behold, I have binge eating disorder. I would hide while eating cookies, ice cream, cake, etc. Back in June I found BLE, I am a true believer in it. There is no moderation in me. I am addicted to sugar. I released 18 pounds since June 1st.; although I didn't start BLE until June 15.

Thanks so much for the profound honesty and self-awareness of you both; it was inspiring to watch this! I loved the 'food freedom- finally' tagline, sits easier with me when thin-ness is still being exploited in advertising culture as evidence of social and personal value, even though we all know it can hide mental health issues of it's own. Your combined take on political AND health awareness in weight issues spells liberation, health and freedom for the body and soul to shed weighty layers of love starvation, self-defence, sadness, self-abuse, poor nutrition or whatever else has held it captive... wonderful work!!

There is SO much in this interview that blew my mind! It’s really opened my eyes to focusing on recovery and I love the idea of rebuilding your identity from the ground up, which was something I have been struggling with formulating since I’ve lost 85 pounds so far. I’d love to read Emily’s book once it’s written! Thank you for this interview!

I agree with what Emily said about fatness being surrounded by morality. The language used in recovery of any kind (by family, acquaintances, healthcare professionals) is all too often pejorative and judgemental which drives a person even deeper into isolation. Negative language finds its way into our psyche, making the journey to being a self-empowered, authentic person even more difficult. The language needs to change. Emily needs to write the book! (-:

Such a great video and testimony! I also have struggled with the book tag line and am happy to hear of the change. I have three young daughters who are very healthy and body positive and I actually covered the word thin on my BLE book so that they are not exposed to that dialogue.

So much gold in this. Working the 12 steps works. Making recovery number one priority really is what it takes to stay sober. For me it was alcohol and smoking first, just now facing the same process with sugar and flour, much like Emily. Really appreciate her wisdom! Blessings!

Loved listening to you and Emily. Both real and always evolving. Loved listening to someone who was okay with body size no matter what it was, so many people are judgemental, this was a great eye opener.
It's also frustrating when being judged about not being thin enough in a right sized body, even by ourselves. Great session, went straight to my soul.

Love that Emily acknowledges how sad and painful healing from any addiction is. I, too, have recovered from smoking (27 years quit), and it was a solo, lonely journey, just as she describes. I thought there was a lot more support for those who want to quit these days; apparently not. I still miss some aspects of cigarettes. It's probably a lifelong thing.
That being said, I see food as the hardest hurdle because, as we all know, you can't cold-turkey stop eating. And while we can cold-turkey quit flour, sugar and chocolate, it's super hard because they're EVERYWHERE. At least I could get away from seeing cigs, from cig culture by avoiding certain places and smokers. But my husband and teens are always going to have bread, sugar in myriad forms, and chocolate in the house. I've tried asking them that if they do bring items in, to hide them. Well, that lasts only a week, if that long.

Yes! Yes! Yes! 'Food Freedom' or 'Health Restoration' would be better 'tag line' as the focus of program is bringing awareness of food addiction to get healthy internally and externally vs just getting thin which does not guarantee happiness. Great interview, both of you were equally interactive and engaging and offered a lot of 'food for thought' outside of the support groups i.e. family, colleagues, friends.
    2. Thank you for mentioning the body dysmorphia...its definitely real.

I’m the same way, I cannot tell myself “just for today”. It almost feels like a back door in for my saboteur. It ends up being like “okay this is just another thing you’re going to eventually give up on anyways, so why bother?” It has to be a lifelong commitment for me to give it my all.

Very candid and expressive, must feel good Susan to meet yourself. Interestingly, it is true about all healthcare workers and I mean ALL. I was a nurse and I was there too, at one time. The ones are ignoring and don’t comprehend cortisone levels and the effects that has on stressed, pressured, caring and giving to others the effects on themselves. Sacrificing themselves until others can be found to be as concerned about others as you. Responsible, trustworthy, sincerely compassionate ones who will at least give to ones unable to do for themselves. How many do you know? Yikes...I am an addict to flour and sugar!

SPT-I had a hard time with the “thin” piece as well and have often thought it would fix things if you changed that word to “lean.” Not healthy, not fit, but “Lean.” It does not have near the stigma that the word Thin does, but implies the aesthetic piece without assuming nor eliminating the health piece. I love the Happy and Free parts and would hate to lose those in the tagline “Food Freedom. Finally.” That said, I really love the new tagline and it does cover the bases.

The fascinating part of this interview (to me) is that Dr. Emily gave no credit of her healing to weight loss. She gave all credit to the food and the change in the types of foods she now eats. I foresee a day when the “health at every weight” crew will take over this BLE movement and people will be afraid to even mention that they honestly want to lose weight and that the fat was a problem in their life. Sure, change the tag line and get rid of the word “thin”. But what goes next? Interesting.

Wow! A week off from work before starting.... Amazing advice... My sister and daughter we were always told they were 'big bone girls'... Agree with Emily on that . And also agree with Susan about the profoundly sick society promoting 'obesity' because they make huge profits with unhealthy foods...

Quantities don’t have to be thousands of extra calories at a time. A person only has to eat around 500 extra calories a day to gain a pound a week. That is just one pastry a day above your calorie limit ( given exercise, body size etc.). That is only one year to become obese.

Oh, dear heart. We hear you. Thank you for reaching out here. You probably feel so much resonance with Emily's story. We're not sure if Bright Line Eating is the right program for you, unless you feel that your relationship with food is not a healthy one.
That said, we've seen a lot of our community members able to make drastic strides with their mental health once their nutrition and their relationship with food becomes healthy. 🥰
It sounds as though perhaps smoking is your number one concern right now, and we'd strongly recommend consulting with your physician about that. 🧡
