  • Chhaya Sharma is a senior IPS officer, currently serving as Joint CP-Eastern Range in Delhi. With over 23 years of experience, she has served as DGI at the National Human Rights Commission and as the director of the Central Vigilance Commission. She is widely recognised for her pivotal role in apprehending the perpetrators of the infamous 2012 Nirbhaya rape and murder case.
In the latest ANI podcast with Smita Prakash, IPS Chhaya Sharma shares insights into how she achieved the first breakthrough within 18 hours in the Nirbhaya case.
She underscores the need for a shift in societal mindset to promote women's empowerment. Additionally, she sheds light on the tactics used by Conman Sukesh Chandrashekhar to entice female actors with luxury gifts.

Smita ji I am truly in awe of your work. There isn’t a week when I don’t spend a couple of hours listening to your podcast. In America where I live you are shining a light on the law and order that exists in India. Hats off to you and your team. The variety of topics, depth of research, the tight editing and absence of advertising interruptions makes it an amazing experience!

I frequently go to the road where that munirka bus stop is... And everytime this incident haunts me even in broad daylight. Spent a large part of life in that area, and could never imagine any such thing could take place there. Hats off to Delhi Police for their quick response and sincere investigation.

A fascinating first hand explanation of how the inhuman perpetrators were identified and caught. It was a world class investigation involving world class techniques. It also pointed out the unreasonable expectations of the press, which habitually engages in sensationalising and at times involves in subversive reporting. Kudos to IPS Chhaya Sharma to put the press in its place. At times, the press ought to be told, shut up and listen. Be patient and don’t make unreasonable demands. That they will be informed when it is appropriate to do so. She is a STAR and a role model for others in the police force to follow. Bharat is so fortunate to have a dedicated officer like her. Unlike the police in Mumbai, who are an embarrassment and seem to have botched up the case of Sushant Singh.

So glad and thankful to Smita ji for getting Chhaya Ma’m for the podcast, I’m truly touched listening to her and knowing her.
I sensed so much serendipity when she mentioned how she didn’t want to give UPSC, but for the sake of her father she did; and how she missed IAS to land into IPS. If not for these little junctures in her life, I wonder if the Nirbhaya case and the other lives that she’s touched, would have gotten justice the way they did because of her inputs and commitment.
God bless you Chhaya Ma’m 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

Very interesting/gripping conversation though painful to hear in some places - thank you Smitha for bringing this to us. Had a question - Is there a requirement for doctors to audio/video record victim statements when police is not present? The reason I'm asking is that some important descriptions could be missed (in translation so to say ) if the doctor just took notes?

The saddest part abtt this whole thing is that the main culprit got away with the minimal punishment considering him being few months less than 18. They should have his physical test to identify his age to punish that bästäârd bcz many PPL reduce their age in their IDs.

Hats off to Chhaya madam ji and Smitaji for bringing up this podcast. Instead of leaving it to God and wait till judgement day for perpetrators of crime, your team and entire machinery of law, medical and other functionaries like RTO , STF etc and of course the Media played a pivotal crime in solving the blind case. But still its a long way to go to annihilate as we have been noticing of spurt of such events across the country in its aftermath too although not of the same magnitude. One that happened in Telangana was also deftly handled by Police authorities.

We don't realize how hard the cops work to catch culprits of such henious crimes and make our society safer. However, there is not much recognition to their hard work, dedication and persistence. We only highlight their failures and corruption. I pray the much awaited police and judicial reforms are put in place, there is no shortage of staff and resources for ppl working in ensuring law and order, more efforts put into preventing crime & no political interference. Unfortunately there have been many Nirbhayas since then, but not many came to light and many of the brutal rapists/murderers went scot free, as every sinner has a future acco to Milords. The fear of law is missing and criminals are getting bolder. Pray for all this to change. 🙏

IPS Chhaya Sharma comes across as a determined and a very competent police officer who is capable of solving any case.
The crime can be deterred to some extent by implementation of law but will only cease to exist if criminals firmly start believing that there is no such thing as a perfect crime and every criminal act leaves some evidence that will ensure the law to catch up with you.

There can't be any justification for Heinous Crimes .
So many Kashmiri Pandits where robbed of their Homes and families through brutality by Islamic Radicals . But wherever they settled in India or abroad they established themselves again , get their next generation educated , worked hard and earned well . They lived peacefully wherever they settled .
