  • Shraddha Walkar’s murder by her boyfriend Aftab Poonawalla has transfixed the country. The gruesome details that are emerging everyday have, once again, brought to focus the issue of crimes against women in the country and especially in the city of Delhi. To shed further light on the issue Smita Prakash spoke with a former police officer who knows Delhi like the back of her hand. She was the first woman officer of the Indian police service. Kiran Bedi has worked tirelessly to reduce crimes against women. In this conversation she talks about the mentality of criminals, the need for reforms in the system and the way forward. She shares her opinions on Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and what she feels he should do to make Delhi better. She also opens up about her tenure in the police force, her political stint, and her most cherished days as Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry.

Salute to Kiran Bedi Ma'am.She is still a firebrand. Women in India are the biggest migratory population is a profound statement . It would be nice if Kiran Ma'am educates the girls and women in India regularly to stand up for themselves. There are countless women who are scared to go back home when they are ill treated and abused in the spouse's home.

Physical abuse is rarely only physical, it is also psychological and emotional as the abuser tries to break down the victim's self-esteem so they can do whatever they want and get away with it. It gives a man complete power over the woman, her body and her mind.

  • @AshwinSriram

I am not an expert in any sense but I had a friend who suffered from domestic abuse within marriage and what I learnt from her ordeal is that sometimes the victim is afraid of reaching out to others (cops, friends, family, counsellors, etc) because she fears that if she speaks out to others then the offender might come to know about it and will react with immediate violence. The offender usually has some sense of control and power over the victim making them obedient. In some instances the abuser will also threaten the victim by saying that if she complains to others then he will reveal some confidential information that could destroy her family's reputation (this happened with my friend hence I am mentioning this possibility). Sometimes the offender uses blackmail to keep the victim silent. In some cases, the victim might even suffer from Stockholm Syndrome and that may prevent her from reaching out to others. There could be any number of reasons for why a victim suffers silently without taking positive action (i.e. ending the relationship, leaving the guy, etc).
In the podcast you mentioned that Shraddha should've gone to the police, but if I recall recent reports then Shraddha did file some police complaint but it seems she also retracted it before the police could act on it. Not sure what really happened there or why she did what she supposedly did. Someone can correct me if I am misinterpreting the recent news reports.

What can be done in such cases if any women suffer is that she can go to parents or Where's she feels comfortable but rigidly she can say no to go with them and she should ensure them that she wouldn't speak against them actually after long stay she would know all the truth about the family.
In our society it's very tuff it will take a long way.
Blame game is never good just say goodbye n move on and tell them u will not harm them anyway.
Just not for that you feel afraid just for that u loved them deeply but they don't deserve.
We need to teach well to our sons n daughters both that u may have different thinking so just don't insult don't play blame game..just leave calmly.
This would be the true humannnn nature .
      Just be human.

U r correct, she was blackmailed so she took it back. Nobody will retract her case after reporting it to, especially the police, unless any blackmail or threatening is involved. I think she gave an ultimatum to him, either u marry or let me leave so he went crazy cuz he didn't wanna marry but he didn't want her to leave so he chopped her off.

A 100% agree to the victim’s mindset while being still in contact with the abuser. The victim/ survivor’s are most of the times are threatened to stand up because of the family, children, financial status etc. It’s not about education of the victim- there has to be some sort of walking steps to do in such situations. All of us can sit and judge a victim that you should never take violence but all the ladies i know who are victims take very small steps very slow…

Beautiful interview. All the points that Kiran Bedi Ma'am raised/raises have always been relevant to India's civil society....but there has never been sufficient political will to appreciate her commitment to create tangible solutions to our society. It's like... she has always challenged the low IQs of babus and netas and obviously they are nervous to be in her company.
With respect to Shraddha... I, as a DV survivor and single mother, can honestly say that our social system is ruthlessly patriarchal and biased against women. Our toothless DV law, our judiciary, our misogynistic police and our stifling, spineless and apathetic society kill so many of our daughters every day. My RTI asking for details on how many women got relief thru DV law implementation, across India, was shocking. Not even 1%. Most of them abandoned their cases because the system and courts were painfully slow and always put the victim on trial with mean and mannerless questioning. This suffocating system...its not easy to walk out of your marital home despite domestic violence. Luckily for me my mother was a huge pillar of support. Not every woman is that fortunate. Most violent men draw their energy from their violence. They need their victims and they'll never let them go. It's possible that Shraddha, in a moment of weakness (and trust) could've been party to something that she in retrospect is ashamed of. Probably she was ashamed that her acts could bring shame to her family and he probably was threatening her on those pieces of "evidence". She was not even married to him... She could've walked out. But when you are a DV victim, it just saps your energy, your confidence and a certain depression sets in. It takes enormous courage to walk out and often you are confused about what your next steps should be.
But the truth is the system is a bigger predator. It sniffs your vulnerability miles away and It'll shred you apart in no time. As a lone woman it's difficult to manage it all. I am sure that poor girl was trapped in all this, not knowing where to go. My heart went out to her...what a way to die. Violent guys have a pattern to their relationships and they have a way with women. Obviously that beast's parents know about his nature. They just don't want him near them. Most often they are happy that their son is someone else's problem and they'd like to keep it that way.
Young girls should understand that live-in relationships in a culture like ours is the first step to self-burial. And family bonding is a two-way street. Middle class parents don't know how to handle things when their daughter chooses a live-in partner. Its a very complicated situation for everyone concerned.
But law needn't look at all these issues. It's a heinous crime committed on a young girl and their duty is to deliver justice to her. Drugs, alcohol, material aspirations have lead our young ppl to go astray and feel rootless. I hope these lessons are well publicised and young girls are trained to be more objective and rational about their harmonal needs and stop glorifying that as 'love'.

you have also expressed the reality and truth where its felt on skin and mind. Kiran Mam also said the family needs to be responsible for each one in the string. this is the first liability that the law needs to point so that the whole family is pinned up at one time ie siblings specially and cousins . all varnability starts here because the girls is looked down upon and demoralised. The power to the abuser comes from here where he can move in peace personally because no one is addressing the abuse. Kiran mam is one of a true person but others on chair actually dont deal while respecting privacy. dialing 100 means making a drama at your door steps and neighbors gets gossip topic, so surviving those eye balls is the first painful thing. the law should first ensure privacy to dialing 100 and confrontation on the bases of the call where in the immediate family members need to be roped in, these are the check points thats has to addresses then many more victims specially from middle class family will be able to open up

    • @kgomathireddy9051
      @kgomathireddy9051 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@lakhotiadigital8732 Thank you for sharing your thoughts. These ppl are adults. There is little control parents have over them. But in a marriage the in-laws and parents do play a major role in taking responsibility as elders. In today's India elders don't want to take any responsibility of their abusive and confused children, even within a marriage, forget about live-in relationships. Truth is they really have no control. But their hearts bleed when something like this happens. In fact these young pop are abusive of their parents when they do such things. As a society in transition, our young ppls problems are lot more complicated - low self-worth, unemployment, peer pressure to be hip on social media, failures elsewhere and also probably an abusive childhood. They just drift away as soon as they can earn some money. Shraddha and her partner were perfectly grown adults... And that fellow is a classic abuser. He checks all the boxes of an abuser - isolating his partner from other relationships, silent treatments, blackmail, threats to kill....everything about him was wrong and this girl didn't see the red flags until it was too late. Poor girl. Our prayers should go for her soul to RIP and that fellow to be ripped apart. I am surprised to see how the press is writing reports about him. "Shraddha allegedly killed by... " what do they mean "allegedly " when he himself has admitted in his narco tests to the crime? And apparently narco tests don't hold water in the courts...then why do that tamasha?? The system is working 24 x 7 to protect an abusive and violent male. This is our law.

I would take this opportunity to say that why common people very concsiously not connect with the people because time and again it has been seen that a good Samaritan has been harassed by police. Most unfortunately the likes of Kiran Bedi Ma'm only one or two in number in this vast country. Maybe Police personnels are trained to suspect each and everyone they come across so they donot lose objectivity to deal with each case. But speaking of my personnel experience, I was harrassed by the force when I tried to help a child who was hurt by his alcoholic father. I was made to feel as I was a criminal. We will readily seek help from an Indian soldier but not a police. To us police "represent the statement " Rakshak hee Bhakshak".

Very important information for all to know.
    1. If you are being abused, reach out. Make a 100 call, tag police on social media. Many people just suffer in silence because they don't know what to do. From one of India's all time best, most trusted police officers.
    2. It is one's duty to report a crime. Not reporting a crime is also an offence. If you don't want to be involved, you can ask the police to not reveal your name.

@@knowledgeispowersquare I googled it. As of now it's only some Reddit pages and Jaipur dailouges who are saying this no official police report or news report. So it maybe true or maybe false I will wait it out for that. There is no argument justifying on what's written in the book but I don't think it was a murder influenced by that. These kinds of murders are done by men very often Hindus, Sikhs, Muslims Christians, even atheists alike.

They missed an important point! Sometimes it's the mother of the boy. A woman is the worst enemy of another woman. I have seen so many decent sons who were madly in love with their wives only to have to choose between their mother or wife and about 80% of them chose their mothers.
There was a very nice Jain couple that lived downstairs in our apartment building and they had a five year old son. Very happy couple. Living a happy life until the father passed away and mother moved in. She filled her son's ears and he started accusing his wife of cheating. Started abusing her and she finally ended up divorcing him. There was another beautiful couple and the mother did not even live with them but she brainwashed her son into thinking that his wife was having an affair! I have seen so many times mothers influencing their sons' married life directly or indirectly.

Mam she had filed a complaint in police station last year November, but police didn't take any action... And yes women have a psychological issue that what if she leaves him, society may treat her, her parents may get hurt, etc... It's not financial stability, it's psychological, we have been told from early age to adjust, forgive etc. And normalising verbal abuse also.. Sad still this upbringing is there in so called ellite, educated family also...

While Madamsir Kiran Bedi made some important points about Shraddha. There is something called Trauma Bonding which seems to be the case with Shraddha so despite wanting to leave that monster she may have been Trauma Bonded. Trauma Bonding is when an abuser uses manipulation tactics and cycles of abuse to make the victim feel dependent on them for care and validation, causing a strong attachment or bond. This often occurs in romantic narcissistic relationships, but can also occur in families, friendships, or work relationships
