  • -Welcome to the Sleep Ranch! We are located in the Northern Black Hills on the South Dakota/ Wyoming border where our ancestors settled and started ranching in 1883.
I (Carson) work alongside my parents, Jeff and Jodi, our ranch hand, Jaques, my wife, Damaris who also works as a nurse in town, and our son Silas! We have friends and family who come along very frequently as well!
We run a cow/calf operation where we summer our cattle on the Black Hills National Forest and winter them in the foothills of the Black Hills. We also have a backgrounding feedlot, and grow alfalfa and grass hay.

Friends who live on the southside of Spearfish up against the Black Hills National Forest have had a mountain lion laying on their porch. Yikes!

Mountain Lions cover their kills like the description your dad gave
of his find . So that lion wasn’t far away Carson.

Most predators go after the young and weakest prey. Mountain lions can be a great danger to human beings, but for the most part, they'll try to avoid you. I would be packing at all times, when I'm up in the hills. Be careful out there. Love your videos!!

Wow, interesting story about that Mountain Lion kill of the baby Elk. Good thing they didn't get one of the calves instead. Hopefully you guys carry a gun when out in case the Mountain lions get too close.

Hi Carson…. I agree I hate to see thistle and kosha ( tumbleweed when dry) and goats head… I always make folks take off their shoes.. otherwise the goats head stickers are like stepping on glass….I love the tire watering trough…the moss is caused by the sun…it’s hard to keep out… I’m glad that mountain lion only killed the young elk instead a cow or calf…. Another great video….

ranching still gets me going in the morning. I rode a trail along a ledge looking for strays one time and came face to face with a Puma at eye level. I still have that horse that stood his ground when he growled and we backed up until he ran off.

I enjoyed the video.im glad everything is going well.i also liked your dad's story. When I was a kid my Dad would but Shetland ponies and we would break them and outfit them and resell them we would have as many as 100 at a time those were fun times.

Do you ever lose any calves to mountain lions or bears? I had a lion track me and my little dog up in the White Mountains of Az. in the 80s. I got a glimpse of him when he ducked as I turned around to pick up my little dog. I just stood there and stared. I slowly moved to my van! It was so hard to fight the urge to run and keep my fear under control!!!

One day while driving a back road in Tombstone, AZ a mountain lion crossed right in front of me. The shrubs and brush camouflaged it so well I never saw it again but I just knew it was watching me

Those mountain lions could be scary knowing they might be watching you. Do you carry a side arm when out working in the timber? Little Silas on a mini horse will be cute to see. I remember my dad sending me in the pasture to dig up the thistles. That wasn't any fun. Thanks for sharing. Have a great 4th if July week end. God Bless your family.

We have mountain lions here also! Seems mountain lions and Black Bear populations have gone way up this year! A couple weeks ago a large male black bear attacked a guy from behind and drug him down a bank and ate half of him before a neighbor shot it! Tragic! I’ve seen mountain lions literally chasing coyotes and catching them! Any calves missing is the coyotes doing it! I had a female mountain lion behind me 25 feet just laying there relaxing! When I noticed her I said and what are you doing would like a cold beer!? LOL!!! She yawned and put her head back down! She could’ve cared less about me! Prescott has a lot of mountain lions showing up on peoples surveillance cameras! Whole families! Hey your Dads looking good! God bless him! Family looks good man!

I don't think I would want to wrestle with a big cat. They like to jump on you when you turn your head away from them. The lightening is pretty cool but yet pretty dangerous. Silas is growing so fast. Hope you guys all stay safe and healthy. Not sure if you guys have bullheads (fish) around there we would put one in a tank and they clean the tank nice. Had one that lasted over 5 years with the tank freezing in winter and thawing in the spring

People have thought I was crazy for chasing that recent bear out of my cow/calf pasture but Im not worried about bears. Now lions and moose? Different story! I have several mountain lions around here and they are SO silent and stealthy that you never know that you are right next to them. Thankfully, we have loads of deer and elk for them to eat so they leave our livestock and US alone! Lol!

Silas is such a cutie! Your Dad seems so chill about a mountain lion being close by! I hate to see you using chemicals to rid the ranch of weeds, especially with no PPE (goggles, mask) I understand the need to be rid of them, but as a survivor of blood cancer most likely from chemical poisoning I would love to see you use something of a natural variety. Just a thought. Loved the lightening at the end!!

I'm surprised you don't add dye to your spray solution. it's standard procedure here in Australia, I do it all the time the red dye shows up all the weeds you have sprayed so that none get missed and there's no need to come back and respray the ones you have missed, love this vid some nice feed there in your summer pasture.

I love the trip through the aspens.
Thanks Carson’s Dad for sharing your story with the camera. Very interesting! I thought bears were the only predators that buried their kill. My source was wrong. I know a guy who was out in the Big Creek bottom, up home and came across a freshly killed deer up in a tree wedged between the trunk and a major limb. Now what kind of cat would do that I wonder? I know one thing, it wasn’t a small one. Do you all carry when you’re out and about?
Thanks Carson for another great video. Praying for rain for all our farmers and ranchers. Praying for our country. 🇺🇸
