  • Today we weighed up Little Bree and we can't believe how much she has grown!!! Bree is getting a little training session on leading, and Jim & the draft horses are mowing the hayfield. We also are checking in on how Brenda's garden is looking this year!
Watch our videos to learn about draft horses- horse logging, horse farming, and horse training! Jim uses Belgian, Percheron, and Suffolk horses to do work on the farm and in the woods. He teaches about harnesses, horse-drawn logging and farming equipment, horse feeding and maintenance, and voice commands for horses. New videos uploaded every week. Keep watching to see how Jim trains his new Suffolk Punch colts as he has trained his full-grown teams!

Never get tired of the sound of a pitman rod and sliding sickle bar. I remember the hay balling up. You'd back up slightly, kick the sickle out of gear, then get off and pull the grass out of the sickle.
Brenda, your garden looks great. Both of my grandmothers as well as my mother had gardens like your's. Not only vegetables, but many flowers. Don't see gardens like this anymore.
Always enjoy the horses and everything else that you all do.

Brenda I am enjoying all the help you have digging the potatoes. I use to have Manx cats (they are tailless) and four of them always followed me to the garden. Two would just sit and watch but the other two were always digging and stick their nose right where I was working 🤨

Looks like Bree was on an obstacle course. Oh, and yes, mowing the clover! Great catch Jim of the deer! Bree: Origin:Irish. Meaning:Noble; Power. Bree is a girl's name of Irish origin and comes from the traditional Irish names Bríghe and Brigid. Meaning “noble” and “power,” this regal name has deep roots and entices parents with its simple style and captivating connotations.

My grandfather had an old hay rake which he seldom used and I don't know why and when he did. I do remember he did use it occasionally. It was straight across and had a seat on it from horse drawn days. I don't know where you could find one today but if you had one you could collect the hay when dry and move it to an area that wasn't wet for baling.

Brenda another great video thank you. Bree is growing good and looking good. Jim have you ever giving it any thought of picking up a mower conditioner. Hay dries faster because they squeeze the water out of the hay when it passes thru the rollers. I don't know how much horse power you would need to run one but it might help you get the hay bailed faster. I used one on the fields that we cut. Potatoes look good and the garden with your flowers are beautiful, Brenda. God bless and keep safe from hot sunny Florida

Hay is beautiful..I tried to wait to mow my pastures with my little cub cadet mower to dry the other day..still wet at the base at 2pm and it's nowhere near as thick and tall as your hay..I just went ahead and mowed..PLEASE JIM..be careful reaching into the mower..in the 60's I saw my grandfather lose the end of his left index finger when he did that..awful for a little kid to see..
Brenda..loved the ladies helping you in the potatoes..they were so carrying on a conversation with you😊..a little note which you may know..I used to plant anything viney around my sunflowers..cucumbers beans zucchini etc all loved climbing up and the produce was always clean and the viney stuff didn't spread all over the place which meant people weren't stepping on the plants as much..beautiful flowers and butterfly..
Jim..Ken made you look really small😅
Too bad you didn't have us guessing Bree's weight..when she as walking along I guessed 365#..she's adorable..I am soooo glad the 2 of you started working with her immediately..it's paying off now..and will continue as she gets more mature..it will be so much easier on all of you ..as always prayers and blessings

I've never seen a draft horse grow up; she was huge when born, and now, she has grown so fast and is a stout girl! Bree is probably stronger than some ponies or horses right now. She will be awesomely strong! Potential power lifter. :D

These potatoes look really good. I wonder if they are red inside, too. Mine are just red outside but yellow on the inside. Now rain came here a lot, which is good but also worried about the harvesting conditions now. The oats still look good but the wheat doesn't. It's so amazing how much Bree has grown meanwhile 🥰 The guy who makes the wrapped bales in my place has the wrapper and baler in one machine. But when I think about it it's probably more advantegous to have them as two seperate machines so that you can work independently from each other. Another advantage probably is that you can run it with really every tractor, even very old and small ones, as the wrapper needs very little power (I assume). Have a very wonderful weekend and enjoy your potatoes! 😊-Chris

    @gentlegiants1974 ปีที่แล้ว

That plugging, always a nuisance. I wonder if it would be possible to experimentally retrofit one of those rubber tired sickle mowers you have with modern non-clog guards? I put new regular guards and knives on my Deering and I seldom have it clog with thatch, but I do keep the cutterbar tilted back, nose up rather than nose down, cuts a but longer stubble but keeps it out of the wet thatch. My haybine will clog too but not as easily as the reel keeps sweeping the cutterbar clear, it has regular guards also. I keep the haybine up fairly high too with the skid shoes set for a 4-5 inch stubble which helps keep it moving.
Man that wrapper! they are super pricey up here, I've heard a few prices and it boggles the mind. We borrowed one 30 years ago to wrap a few and our Massey 165 ran it fine. Hope you get it sorted out. Most guys here now use a continuous tube type wrapper as it is faster and uses less plastic. I like a silo, as my round baler is getting tired and tends to wrap bad in wet stuff. I did 49 oatlage bales for a neighbour this year and it took me a day afterwards to clean the rollers and scrapers.

Here is a video of an antique dump rake. The first balers in the late 1800s were stationary units and the hay had to be brought to them with the dump rake. John Deere 51MT and McCormick-Deering dump rake Here is another video of a 1940s hay loader. Loose Haying with Horses on the Davis Family Farm Either of these could save your clover in the wet spots. Perhaps some of your Amish friends would have them. I remember riding on the hay wagon as a 5 year old as the loader picked up the hay. We picked up a nest of ground bees and it was chaos for a bit. After we got the load back to the barn, it was my job to lead the horse to operate the hay fork and pully system. Everyone worked on the farm if they were able. When we got a tractor, I drove that for the same job and had to slide off the seat to reach the pedals.

Jim that filly is growing like a weed. She looks so good. Must be some of that new hay.
Was ready to tell you Brenda how nice your hens look until I saw those killer Flocs. Never saw them bloom like that before. Thank you for sharing.🐴🐴

Brenda, the garden looks great. Amazing with all the rain . Poor Jim this haying is been a nightmare so many complications. Now Bree may need to get a job to exercise herself. haHa. She is growing into a beautiful horse.

I think I mentioned it in your last video about utilizing the horses more and here as well, you could use them to pull bales out to harder ground. They are quite capable of doing that job. In Australia, we would cut it more often so the hay stays far shorter. That way the sun can reach the ground to dry it better. I know it can damage the ecology of the soil but sometimes needs must. And shorter hay can be better for other reasons too in this particular situation.
You won't be able to say at the end of this video that no worms were injured in the filming of this video! 😂😂😂 Those chooks were right onto them as you turned each sod. Brenda, your garden is so prolific. It is a credit to your hard work. I'm not that partial to turnips either but I use one in a vegetable soup mix occasionally.
Bree sure is becoming the little miss independent! I guess it will be weaning time soon. Another fantastic video. 😁

Jim with your wet ground..why not use your slide ( stone boat) to move bales to a drier spot? Might be a bit slower depending on how many you have to move and how many you can put on your slide...cheers Mick
