峠 Driven - 2017 Chevrolet Impala V6 jumps 100 MPH over crest [POV Touge Canyon Run]

  • On the mountain pass, a full-size American sedan wouldn’t appear to be a driver’s first pick. On this touge canyon run, we seek out the potential of a 2017 Chevrolet Impala V6, maximizing its power and grip throughout the uphill road. Oh, also we get air time on the fast crest around 3:45 if you can’t watch the whole video… but please don’t miss out =)
    **For those of you who do canyon performance driving and touge, I have a footnote at the bottom of this description for you**

    Message from Ridge Chaser:
    Many of us have experience with driving the ‘golden era’ touge cars (90’s civics, 240sx, Evos, STi’s, etc… I’m keeping the nomenclature ambiguous). Because of this we have built a perception of which cars are fast and which cars probably suck on a technical course. It only makes sense - there’s criteria such as a lightweight, stiff chassis and suspension geometry made specifically to utilize the grip out of our tires. But it seems like these modern family cars have caught up… my point is that if you ever get the chance, take one of these vehicles (preferably Maxima, Impala, maybe Taurus, NOT Camry) on the mountain pass and compare your overall speed with your choice of mid-tier traditional car. The results may surprise you.

    FYI, this 10th generation Impala with the 3.6L DOHC V6 is the same one used in the updated Chevrolet Impala PPV (a police car variant, which, the 9C1 is based off of the 9th generation Impala). It generates as much horsepower as the old Impala SS w/ the LS4 V8, so these guys aren't kidding when they say it's fast.

    • @RidgeChaser
      @RidgeChaser  7 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      These cars are retarded fast. The reason why the speed doesn't translate to the video is because how buttery smooth the suspension geometry is. An integral reason why these modern cars don't get recognition from the touge community is because they're way beyond budget (realistically) for most of us.

  • @highwaydashy
    @highwaydashy 7 ปีที่แล้ว +31

    Don't underestimate newer cars. A lot of work goes into making big cars handle nicely for safety reasons. A lot of sedans now come from factory with rather large wheels, and the softer suspension setup grants stability on a bumpy touge where us tunerbois get thrown about on our coilovers. These cars also have a good amount of low-end grunt for fuel efficiency, good for leaving corners. Stiff everything might be better on a track, but our roads of choice are closer to rallying than track racing at times.

    • @RidgeChaser
      @RidgeChaser  7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      +Highway Dash Yeah that's pretty much why the Impala did so well on this road. The smoothness of the body travel hides the speed when driving the car

    • @highwaydashy
      @highwaydashy 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Ridge Chaser We also need to remember that due to safety regulations, cars are now designed so the interior doesn't move in a crash, resulting in quite a stiff chassis.
      I drive my '91 Miata to work and drive a modern sedan most of the time at work. Thanks to offramps, I can confirm that the Miata doesn't have that much more lateral grip, could also be down to tire choice.

Headed home twice I spank my brother in law in his 2016 challenger V6. 99.9% of the time a baby my impala. I just love when I need to pass a car on the interstate it does the job well. It's a nice smooth ride and great family car.

    But guys, if someone was doing the downhill run at the same time as you did the uphill, you could have been fucked on sooo many places (that would be an awesome vid tho...), just too many blind corners.

    • @Bartonovich52
      @Bartonovich52 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It comes from the days of the Cavalier with MacPherson struts up front and a beam axle and semi-independent in the rear vs cars like the Honda Civic which from 1988 had a double wishbone suspension up front and multi-link independent in the back... borrowed from the Prelude and Accord in part because their engine bays were not large enough to accept a large transverse 4 cylinder with intruding strut towers. Also lots of cars like the Mustang and Camaro that had solid rear axles (the Mustang all the way to 2014)
      But the Civic had MacPherson struts from 2001 and devolved to semi-independent until the 10th gen.. and most American cars including the Impala now have four wheel fully independent suspension. Also.. a car like the Viper was a track monster.. not just a one-trick pony on the 1/4 mile strip.

    I have the V6 and I love it. Has some get-up.
    I agree with the very first thing you said though: The car needs paddles. It would be 10x more fun to drive that way. The little buttons on the gear selector aren't very satisfying.
    edit: I also don't like how little range the computer gives you on the tach.

    Got a 2019 Impala with the 18 inch wheels, but it's about the same, if you know what this car can handle in curves, you're always faster than the other guys. Because they don't know what their cars can handle. If you're driving on Oregon's 101 and you're on that curvy road faster than a Porsche, it's not because the Porsche sucks, it's because the Porsche driver sucks really badly.

    I just love how the Impala pulls away at the start! Idk why but that really reminds me of Initial D lol. If my CC didn't have 92k miles and shitty eco tires I would come up and ask you to film a video with it lol. How badly do you think a FWD CC would understeer under these conditions if it had your standard old tires?

    • @RidgeChaser
      @RidgeChaser  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Connor Plaksin I dont know much specifically about the CC's dynamics, but we test mid/full size sedans and the understeer is manageable as long as the shitty tires don't oveeheat. The understeer might be a little bit worse than the camera car in this video

    @ Ridge Chaser-- I like what you do but here is .. but some advice.. research your cars more before you drive them. That Impala-- I own a 2015 model. Re-do this run with the traction control off... push the TC button and hold.. it will flash TC off on dash ... keep holding the button for another 15 seconds-- now you have shut stability track off as well. Redo the run just in automatic - that manual driving mode you used is a joke you are holding gears way to long on your up and downshifts. The trans will recalibrate to a entire different upshift- downshift- hold gear all on it's own you will see that the car performs way way better in that configuration
    I have done driving like you guys but I would never film it or post it online. You got more balls then me in that regard. Thumbs up!

      I don't know which car is faster, but I can guarantee that driver mod does not come into play during a straight-line roll race

      Not the point of the video. It shows you what today cars can do. People highly underestimate some of today's sedans... There is a video on here of a 14' Impala with bolt-ons and a tune gapping two IS Lexus in India. They get down

      @@R3AL-AIM did u just say they get down😂 my daily g37 is faster than that boat, and if you wanna talk about underestimating, it’s not cause it’s slow , happy I upgraded to a RS Q50
