I absolutely love the lack of music in this scene. It's so quiet. Just the sounds of cards being dealt and limited dialogue.

This was called "kaleidoscope" its a great movie... He brakes into the playing card factory and changes the card design with his own markings, inableing him to read the cards... Very well done, could stand a modern remake..

    • @xxxYYZxxx
      @xxxYYZxxx 2 ปีที่แล้ว

The premise of the story is laid out in the Time Life book "The Gamblers". During the 19th century, an Indian tribe bought cards from the local store, marked them, and then returned the cards. Then they invited another tribe to a card game, and I guess had them stop at the store to pick up a deck of "new" cards, just to be "fair".

I was crazy going out with girls and parties, traveling around the world, meeting beutiful girls everywhere,, but I could save enough to buy 2 apartments in the best places of my city, unfortunatelly I got divoced and I had to split with my ex wife in half.. so my advice is.. no matter if you are rich or poor, as long as you are single, you are in the safe side..!! But, if you get married but buy your stuff under the name of your parents or brothers.. then you will avoid to split your money with your wife.

Some of it is current industry standard, but he only riffles twice before the cut, whereas today we would wash (as he did), riffle twice, strip, then riffle again, and finally, cut. His distribution (sliding the cards) is seen more commonly in the UK and Europe today, but you would be unlikely to see it used in a stud game in the same way he delivers the upcards to the players.

Not only does the loser show first, but out of turn - after calling the final raise. I reckon the loser shows first because otherwise the scene loses continuity. If the winner shows first, the scene then needs to explains why the losers shows at all. If the loser shows anyways, after virtually admitting defeat already, the element of "surprise" is lost.

There are a lot of poker scenes in movies like this one where people face a big bet/raise of more then they have in play and have to find that money somewhere to call. I always wonder if it has ever been that way in real life or if this is just the lack of knowledge of the movie makers. It feels like total bs.

eric wsmith Paul Newman's hustling scene on a train - that was an unprecedented performance and the most realistic poker scene you can see in films. It is my hobby to check how realistic the gambling scenes are in films and The Sting is the most superior by a huge margin.

eric wsmith Sure, that was another brilliant scene, but I must reiterate - the poker scene at the train was so close to real life scenes as it gets. I have seen many films with very famous actors, huge budget and big names that are crap from a gambler's point of view - e.g. Casino Royale with Daniel Craig ( all poker scenes). So, "the Sting" is the best in depicting the real life alike gambling atmosphere, the second place goes to Cincinnati Kid (Lancey Howard only).
Just when I remember Paul Newmans controlled "uncontrolled" loughter with "you owe me 15 grand, pal" it brings so many personas from my own stories, mostly semi-pro or recreational players, suddenly hitting the winning streak... Not sure who was their consultant but man, he nailed it!

I hate it when movies have poker players pulling out new money, writing checks, or leaving to get more money in the middle of a hand. I've played lots of cash games and they are all table stakes - you can add more between hands but who would play a game in which another player could suddenly bet theoretically any amount?

    • @eshootziscrs2868
      @eshootziscrs2868 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

This would be a normal gentleman's game. It's still actually table stakes since he only called the amount bet.
I've played in cash games where this has happened several times.
The real issue is where they show a player not having enough to cover a bet so he's forced to fold.
That's not table stakes and of course would never be a game to play on unless you had the most money.
I've heard people argue that " you can't add money blah blah blah" the truth is there are no laws governing poker games. The rules are enforced by the players or the host.
If one player has a lot more than another and announces all in or bets over what his opponent has then the opponent is not obligated to put in more than he has on the table, however if the player says I will cover the bet the option returns to the bettor.
Would you like the full call or table just what is on the table.
It's a gentleman's agreement, a side bet if you want and no rules prohibit it being done.
Neither player can force the other to fold or call more than they have in front of them.
Mostly you see it as an angle where a player has only so much on the table but then tries offer to play for more.
You limit your risk from coolers while retaining the ability to get maximum value.
The rules prohibiting it are there to prevent anyone from being forced to call but they don't actually prevent or prohibit two players from agreeing to play for more.
If you watched high stakes poker when it was a show on TV you saw a few times where bets were pulled back or lessened as a courtesy between players.
Card rooms and casinos do not allow this because it can be used as collusion.
I bet way big so everyone else folds, you call and I offer to play for less. One of us will win but if we are playing together it doesn't matter which. We just don't necessarily want to break each other.
In a way allowing a player to match a bet prevents the big stack bullying and buying pots. It prevents that old west idea that i can just bet you out of a pot because you can't afford to call.
In a casino I was the bb, utg straddled after losing two coolers in a row, definitely tilted and playing a half buyin.
Everyone called to me, I look down at AJ off and think about raising.
It's very likely the rest of the table is also aware this player is tilting so I can easily see someone slow playing a big hand. I feel confident the utg is not going to just check so I call instead of isolating.
Utg of course jambs for 50 some bbs more.
It folds back around to me, last to act.
I ask the player if he would like to pull back half and i will call.
The table gets all bent out of shape including the dealer who says i can't do that.
I calmly inform the dealer and every other player at the table that this is a heads up hand, they have no stake or interest in the hand and they cannot tell the other player or me what we can or can't do.
If at the end of the hand he returns part of my money or I return part of his it's not your business or concern and what transactions we make between ourselves is not regulated by you.
We can do it later in the parking lot or the next day if we choose and there's not a damn thing you have to say about it.
If the utg player had offered to cover me as a side wager between the two of us then what right do any other players have to prohibit that?
Ultimately as expected the utg player declined saying let's play for it all.
I didn't care so much about the amount of money as much as his reaction to my question.
I called and he showed KJ.
I won and asked that the next time I asked an opponent a question during a hand, anyone not in the hand should really stay out of the hand.
It's like asking how much do you have left and three others replying for the player. STFU, I want his reaction, I have eyes and can count myself.
Anyway the rules of private games can vary from the casino but the rules that are enforced even in a casino are only for player protection. There isn't some lawful authority that makes and enforces laws. The gaming commission in states that have one only have authority over licensed establishments.
So even though I get what you're saying and I agree that those are the standard rules used in most games they can be altered or varied by agreement.
I've played in games with a table minimum, if you drop below something like a half buy in you have to reload, but that's very rare.
My real point is, rules are what we agree they are, if you're not involved don't be the cry baby on the sidelines saying " they can't do that" .
When your in the hand or it's going to affect the game feel free to challenge the rules or the action. If not, let others live their lives and you live yours, quit thinking you have a right to tell others what to do.
Because that's the mentality I get when I hear someone saying that's against the rules. Who gives a fuck, tell me why it's not permissible, a harm caused or how it effects others.
It's your job to stand up for yourself, to leave a game you can't beat, to accept you lost or to call when you have the best hand.
You don't have to match the bet from off the table but sometimes you might want to.
Sorry if I insulted you, I don't know you and I understand what you were saying. I just happen to know you're wrong but it certainly does open up some doors when rules are changed mid game. Clearly in this game it was well within the rules because no one objected. Perhaps it's Hollywood licensing or a depiction of actual games.
The fact is you and I were not in the game or effected by the act. Those who were didn't have an objection so why would you?

Oh boy, we have a troll who isn't too bright.
      You say regulated????
      By who, what authority?
This is clearly a private game and despite what you might believe in ignorance the rules are what they make them?
You didn't seem to notice the "string bet/raise. Most rooms would not Allow that and for a reason that many people don't understand.
The player added on to match the stack not buy the pot. Of course this is legal, lawful and clearly allowed in this game.
Why do you contradict yourself and insist on displaying your ignorance by attacking me?
You had nothing real or useful to say you only chose to address an old post to find an argument. One you are clearly ill equipped to engage in.
If this wasn't ok, then the authorities would have come rushing in and put a stop to it. They didn't because THEY DONT EXIST.
      Here's a question for you.
You and I sitting $10k deep. You bet $500, I announce $3,500, you jam before I move my chips. I call. There are only your $500 chips in the middle. Board comes out, you win.
I pick up my chips and leave.
      What happens?
Do you think you can force me to pay? Do you think the house has the authority to force me?
Will the cops come and make me pay? Would you sue for the money?
You figure that out and then tell me all about these imaginary regulations and authorities you dream about.
