They did have a good gradual transition to Lieutenant Anderson, including one scene where Tragg warns Anderson not to let Mason take advantage of him.
I had read long ago that Raymond insisted on it because you got your salary no matter if you were in the credits. He took care of his friends and many actors back then were not rich.

Lt. Arthur Tragg arrested at least one innocent person in each episode! Had that happened in real life, he would have been busted back to patrolman & assigned a beat so far out in the sticks he would have to get his paychecks via carrier pigeon!

Just like the old "Hawaii Five-0" series. If a real-world secret agent failed half as often as Wo Fat did, he would have long since been "Taken care of" by his own government! On a related note: Khigh Dhiegh always seemed to be type-cast as an evil Chinese agent of some type. I remember one episode of the old "Mission Impossible" where he was cast as an rich evil Chinese businessman seeking to destroy relations with the West.
When I think of Lieutenant Tragg, I can very well imagine him having been appointed the permanent 3rd grade classroom monitor(greatly enjoying that distinction as well as greatly enjoying writing down the names of kids who were talking).
Truly one of the best programs ever. I've watched every episode countless times and still watch it now. The only unreasonable part that didn't make sense was how a woman as beautiful as Della didn't have a life of her own. Tragg and Burger was always out to get Perry but they were buddies at the end of the day. No way I'm being buddies with anyone out to get me.
It's called professionalism. They were doing their jobs, he was doing his. Nothing personal about it. Watch the end of the Super Bowl. Guys who just moments before were hitting each other as hard as they could will smile and shake hands congratulating their opponents for a game well played.
And kids today don't want to EARN money because they're spoiled rotten by their parents. We wore 'hand me downs' from our older siblings .... today's kids get the best designer sport shoes & clothes. 😢

To Burger's and Tragg's credit, there was always some strong evidence that pointed directly at Perry's innocent client (the proverbial peoples' exhibit A), it often was a hand gun or a blunt object that just happened to have the wrongly accused's finger prints on it, great tv and hard to imagine the characters could have been casted any better
Well, he never convicted an innocent person. And we can be grateful for that. Presumably, Burger would have convicted the real murderer whom Perry always ferreted out toward the end of the show. Erle Stanley Gardener, the lawyer-writer who created Perry Mason, had his own "project innocence" long before the eponymous organization gained fame in the late 20th century. Gardener called his organization "The Court of Last Resort." Gardener, like Perry Mason, sought justice, not rigged convictions.
How did the car get from the boys fixing it to the lab and be tested for fingerprints - all over, in the few minutes that Perry walked the one block into the office ?
I like to think Tragg was a good officer and Hamilton Burger a compatent prosocuter, They just always arrested and prosacuted an innocent person when Perry was the lawyer.
The only television series my Father watched with interest. The theme music still ranks with one of the best, maybe just a notch below MAVERICK. Actually the HBO PERRY MASON is pretty darn good with Mathew Rhys.

Some shows were lucky enough to have that sought of "old pals" cast of regulars which kept you watching in spite of the often-poor material.
