Todd McFarlane (@Todd_McFarlane) is an Emmy- and Grammy-winning director/producer and creator of one of the world’s best-selling comic books, Spawn. He is best known to many comic book fans for his work as the artist on The Amazing Spider-Man, for which he co-created Marvel’s top villain, Venom.
Todd is the CEO of Todd McFarlane Productions, McFarlane Toys (one of the US’s top action-figure manufacturers), and McFarlane Films. He is also a co-founder of Image Comics, which debuted Spawn in 1992, selling 1.7 million copies of the first issue. In 1997, Spawn was made into an Emmy Award-winning animated series on HBO and a live-action feature film that grossed over $100 million. In 2019, Todd made history with Spawn number 301, earning the Guinness World Record for longest-running creator-owned superhero comic book series.

One of the best interviews ever. Please have Todd back for another round or 2!
We definitely REQUIRE and DEMAND a part 2 to this!
AGREED
This Dude is AWESOME
Part 2! Part 2!...
This is special wow that guys minds works a mile a minute without a single slip
42:18 “Jim Lee was the chef’s kiss.” LOL
48:00 Jim Lee was studying to become a doctor (his dad was a doctor), and Todd’s dad worked in the publishing business for 50 years.
I could listen to the Toddfather talk all day, this is gold! 🙂
This was so enjoyable to listen to. Thanks Tim and Todd for allowing us to learn a little more about your history of digging yourself out of that hole of corporate America. This was a treat to have found this interview. Todd is a true wall breaker and an inspiring person to get to know. Need Part II of this ASAP
Todd McFarlane, Robert Kirkman, and everybody at image comic books really inspired me when I decided to open my independent personal training gym. Time to break away from the established powers, and empower the people who actually do the work.
This is the best interview Todd has ever given, and that is saying something.
This is a secret gem of an interview…10/10!! Ty ty ty!!
Dude, I Looooove that you kept the snip when Todd's dad walked in!
I never get tired of Todd, I could listen 5 hours of this, great interview!
Honestly one of my favorite interviews with the ToddFather! Epic. Hope there is a sequel to this! Incredibly insightful, inspiring and entertaining as well. Thank you!
Amazing interview. Does anyone else think he sounds exactly like Saul Goodman??
“You never want to have a conversation with anybody, when two plus two equals Giraffe” lol.
Todd is such an inspiration in my life. His mental toughness is so amazing.
This guys art was my childhood, my best friend (RIP)was obsessed with Todd 😊Good memories
I'm not into comic books, but I really enjoyed this conversation. Looking forward for part 2!
Image formation was and is the equivalent of the Justice League forming. Thankfully Todd was the magnet to bring it together. It changed the landscape of the comic industry in favor of the creative talent successfully publishing and retaining the rights to their characters.
I’ve seem a ton of Todd interviews and this is by far the best one so far.
Todd is a cool dude. That story about chasing the plane down the runway resonates big time with me.
I could listen to this for hours, Todd MacFarlane has a lot of interesting stories of how he’s navigated through the business over the years. It seems like the whole status quo mentality mirrors how movie executives keep making reboots, too unsure about new ideas that may or may not work verses reboots that on paper would be projected as guaranteed blockbusters. I once discussed this with a friend of mine, who incidentally is an actor.
I love this interview. Looking forward to part two!
Yes please. Part two!
The Todd Father! Awesome, one of my fav artists! I collect everything I can find of his.
incredible to listen to Mr McFarlane. please invite him again
Much love for ToddFather!
Amazing (no pun intended) interview, loved hearing the backstory on his spiderman run, his art is everywhere
19:05 Tim was the graphics editor at a magazine where Jim Lee had been the previous graphics editor
so glad to see Todd getting the attention and respect he fully deserves. i was one of those kids who waited in line for him to sign a comic, and it was for an issue of Spawn i had a (poorly written) letter in complaining about him drawing less in the issues - he was totally gracious and genuinely wished me luck on my own nascent journey into drawing. and this was after a FULL DAY at San Diego Comic Con. what a brat i was, what a goat he was/is.
Todd has grown into being a hero of mine. Not his art so much as his approach to art and life. He makes the complicated simple and the dream a reality, by sheer attention , work and self knowledge. A guy who has left a mark in his industry, by being himself. A total inspiration. Thanks Tim for the interview, fun to hear you're a comics fan! So looking forward to diving into part 2!
Damn, that was some good talk. I remember being the cool kid in school just because I was not only reading comic, but because it was the gritty Spawn. Thank's Tim for inviting Todd I needed that rebel yell :D . Also waiting for round 2!
Great interview! Round 2... Go!
A most agreeable confluence of interests. Stoked for round 2, the Toddfather has been a model creator and business man, and we don’t get to hear about business so much. Still working on the comics, still making toys, and I’m still buying it. Salute!
Can’t believe I’m a year late to this, love Todd’s story
This ruled!
Todd i havent heard you talk in ages. Youre a legend to me. I haven't bought a comic in 10 years but I'm alwaysgoing to be an artist
Really great interview!!
Todd is an amazing storyteller! So much better than many of the other guests (no offense)
I just now had the time to listen to this and HELL YEAH I need a part 2, maybe even a part 3! Grew up with this guy's art influencing me, I need more!
(Nevermind! Just seen part 2. Will come back if I need a part 3!)
Yeah!! Part 2, please!
Love Todd! Been following him & his work for quite a few years now.
Bring on part 2!!!
This was fantastic! It is truly an interview about sound business as much as a comics talk. The Art of War aspects, breaking the status quo and humor were inspirational. I have been in way too many "2+2= giraffe" meetings! Thank Tim and Todd...on to part 2!
More Todd Interviews please!!!!
This was such an amazing video, thank you for the fantastic content! Definitely looking forward to a part two
This is brilliant. I love to watch your videos Tim, great
conversational direction as well as listening and understanding life concepts. Todd, you da man my guy bro, wow. I had no idea you were so down to earth and incredibly intelligent in that you learn from mistakes and you use logic to deflect attacks on you, in which you are fearless to push everything to the edge. Brilliant!! Can't wait for more....
I also hope there is a part 3 in the future
Coming at it as a fashion designer with a love of comic books, I remember how groundbreaking Venom and Spawn were and continue to be. Fantastic interview! On pins and needles for part two.
Wow, what a great interview. Legendary! I have been there, when Todd redid Spidey ❤ such a pleasures listening to all the stories behind the curtain.
Yes absolutely for part 2
Damn, this was excellent - one of my faves, hands down. Part 2 as well. I didn't know this was the person I wanted to hear talking, but apparently yes. Thank you!
YES!! Part 2 please 👏👏
Hellyea!! I've been hoping Todd would make it on one of these big pods! He's a legend and I still read Spawn til today and have lotsss of mcfarlane toys lol Great interview
Absolutely amazing video!!! Please, please, PLEASE let there be another interview!!!
Fascinating strategy within a career. Really enjoyed it.
Great interview. Can't wait for Part 2.
I can listen to Todd all day!
Great interview!
Amazing interview. I love this guy.
Great interview
Is there a pt 2 yet? I grew up reading McFarlane's ASM books as they came out and he was always my favorite artist. Always a fun interview with him.
I have two of those wooden chairs with the navy webbing back over Todd's right shoulder.
My favorite part about the formation of Image is that they seized control of the means of production and put the power into the hands of the creator. This should happen in ALL industries. Why do we let companies keep what the worker creates?
When I go to conventions, I just bring my food and lunch with me. I eat while there. So I don't have to leave.
Cool, how will we find and do our dent in the universe and history?
God bless.
perfect interview illustrating the problem with editors (non artistic people shaping art) only 10 percent have art background and intel
I'm a big Todd McFarlane fan on just started collecting on his new NFT platform.
I am a Todd Fan since 7 years old, now 30 years later buying Dc Multiverse McFarlane, Todd is great
22:30
Todd probably meant to say Kirby created Captain America. Steve Ditko created spider-man's costume
All hail The Todd Father
I'm curious if Todd has ever spoke with Larry Hama after this G.I.Joe experience.?
make him understand that we love all of that geek stuff, and make him talk about it
These guys owe a little bit to Wizard.
34:48 BRILLIANT!!!! 2+2= Giraffe!! 😂😂😂
💯💯💯
#ShapeChange 🌱
Wow
This is a classic example of a lion’s den in the making 👏👏
X - Force
If Todd is mediocre, what and where are we then X-D?
Todd sounds like Saul Goodman from Breaking Bad
22:22 Jack the KING KIRBY - Short END OF THE STICK - NO MORE!
Todd loves to hear himself talk😅
H E R O E
I think there must be a big personality-type clash between Todd and myself. I couldn't help but acknowledge throughout this interview that I was getting frustrated with how he spoke of his interactions with others. It came off to me as very "self-righteous" and "disrespectful". Likely amplified by the fact that I had just finished listening to one of your interviews with Seth Godin - a vastly different character than Todd haha
Fucking legend ❤️🔥🙌💪
Sebenarnya dengan gaya hidupku dan style parenting ku, aku kuatir anak2ku gak ingin menikah.
Monopolize
Redo the 700 today to make 7 trillions.
The only thing I have learned about this guy is he OWNS the 3 homerun balls from the 3 steroid kings and his PROUD of that!!!!! LOL.
How much of the 700 stolen ,meanwhile.
Has anyone told you that you look like a bald Jamie Frasier? (OUTLANDER)
His achievements are awesome but I hate his personality. He's always in the right, diming people out by name and feels like he's got a chip on his shoulder that he just can't shake. Doesn't stop Spawn being awesome though!
are they making a movie about this or what. Most likely not from MARVEL LOL
Great Interview
