I watched a documentary on Todd in 2017 and decided I wanted to learn to drawn, write, pencil, ink and color my own comics. In 2018 I started learning and I’m half way through my first book. I’m making my second childhood dream come true. I ordered all 6 Kubert correspondence courses got on my way. Never to old to learn a new skill. Todd is my spirit animal. Never give up!

Everything Todd McFarlane is saying here in the video is 100% true. How to show work, what to do, how to plan. All True. I remember in the beginning when I first started doing art for DC Comics, I also has some samples still floating out there, and when I got responses back, those letters said I wasn't quite there. And I was already doing work for Justice League of America.

Back in the 80s when Tod started his drawing career there was no computers no technology. Comics were penciled inked colored and written bye hand. The comics from the 80s and 90s are still the best comics ever drawn.

@@abdullah82m Yeah the best stuff is from the 40s through the 90s but mainly underground comics and artists that worked with alejandro jodorowsky. Metal Hurlant, Pilote, Zap, Weirdo. there's so much out there.

as an indie musician, writer, designer, and visual artist, Todd is beyond inspiring. grew up watching him pave his own way and especially with a Black Antihero as his spearhead. the hardships he speaks of, i truly understand n encounter even to this day. rare energy and rare soul this man is. the world is a better place bc of what he chose to do in believing in himself and taking action on it

There’s a lot of talk in this video about how comics could be better, what they’re going to be, & how to get them in front of more eyeballs. I think there needs to be a return of the newsstand comic, in some form or fashion. Ideally, magazine with snippets, or previews, or 6-8 page short stories by multiple creators, from veterans to new guys. Like a Marvel/DC/Image/Dark Horse/IDW/Fantagraphic/indie/etc Comics Presents, in magazine format, sold in gas stations/Walmart/Walgreens/etc

Body of Work. Great Artists work a lot. LOTS OF WORK. Guys like Jack Kirby dont strike me as dreamers. They were workers and understood their job was to tell stories visually and hope they sold well. Work, work work. Hurry up and make your mistakes so you can get on with the mile high club.

Great session. Who else says this? You are left with a pressing reality. Something like this. I can tell you everything I learned and know but if your waiting for someone to hold your hand or build a pair of balls for you ,quit while you are ahead. The life your dreaming of isnt coming from a mom packing lunchables and yogurt cups in your lunch box. Snap out of it Geeks. Lol

I LOVE Todd but one day I wish he would SHOW us what was wrong about one of his earliest samples!
Also, it sounds like he attended a Fine Art school because I doubt an instructor at a school like The Rhode Island School of Design would make such an absurd comment about Illustration!

As far as his take on bad art I think he is only right to a point. I was a HUGE Jim Lee fan. Then he started mailing it in taking panels, pages and even covers and entire issues off. This went on for a long time before I just stopped buying his stuff. It wasn't free and I wasn't rich. The same reason I stopped going to McDonald's 20 years ago. I was tired of paying money for substandard product. In both cases.

8:30 LOL Like going into a comic book shop asking opinions from customers and bicycle helmet virgins and social squirrels terrified of pretty girls. So often these little micro communities think of themselves as the nice guys yet harbor more petty jealousy and insecurity than you expect until it is upon you. The abused becomes the abuser. Not only are they speaking for themselves but quite often they will downgrade your talent that they in fact internally acknowledge. Every workplace has weasels and worms. Dont sweat it. Once your in you can decide what to do with them. You can either squash them or rub it in their face. And dont be surprised if once your accepted by the staff you work for that the little turncoat is the first one to start puckering up.

That's the thing about having the instinct. You share what you assume was common sense. And the ones that gape in wide eyed awe will never get it. Wasting time wondering if everybody is going to be friendly and polite with you is a misdirection of energy or a lack of focus. Forget that Fear of Gravity (MaxWebster) lol. And that one you keep obsessing about, but doesnt even know you are Interested Romantically is eventually going to get snatched away in front of your coward face . And let's get something straight. She IS NOT perfect fellah. Stop that stuff. You need a kick in the a##. Lol

look i think Todd is a great Artist but I'll admit I didn't like how he sorta skirted the race issue here. Sorta saying and threading on the issue with kid-gloves...DUDE it's still a systemic problem in this country and there are more people of color playing Baseball around the world than caucasians playing it...think about that. i commend that he created a Black character but please dude don't stumble on your words when discussing race here....say it loud and precisely!
