Hey James I wanna share a funny little story here if I may that goes in tandem with his fannerocity. My wife roommate at the time worked for gamestop it was summer of 09 and she went out to las vegas for a conference con thing and todd was like "Yeah I wasn't supposed to be here but I came anyway." and he gave her a signed #0 of Haunt and the next summer on a super hot day I had my arm resting on the cover was using the book for reference/inspiration and I pulled my arm up and half the sig with it, I shared this story on one of his fb threads and he said, "well we'll have to get it re-signed then won't we??"...just astounding and amazing...he didn't shun me for mistreating his books. XD

He made them up their quality. Before image you would get maybe one or two issues from marvel that used the good magazine paper with the vibrant blacks and colors. I remember being blown away by the quality of Spawn. Very few throw away panels, great artwork high quality presentation. Comic books changed after that.

@Mr Jason But if your artwork and fine art clearly stood out from everyone else's at this time and your artwork was in high demand and you had designed Venom and you had the chance to start your own comics, with your own characters, popularise the use of Photoshop colouring and airbrushing in your own comics before everyone else, joined by Jim Lee, one of the best X-Men artists ever (and at the time) and Marc Silvestri, also previously one of the greatest X-Men artists ever, what would you have done? Please can you explain why they were responsible for this demise of comics?

He and the Image founders also created a company built on equality. That's hard to find in ANY enterprise. But if you get a deal from Image Comics, you get the same deal as Todd MacFarlane, Rob Liefeld, Jim Lee, Whilce Portaschio, Eric Larsen and anyone else who has published under the Image banner.

A weirdo just used this line on me about current so called Marvel comics, my response is after the quote:
"Not every comic is written for YOU."
Marvel comics are written for as wide an audience as possible they are meant to be mainstream but would still have imprints and places for edgier or more experimental stuff . THAT IS WHAT MARVEL COMICS IS. What you are talking about IS NOT MARVEL COMICS.

    • @rbruggeman7722

@Rob Hunter English majors? I really do not see the level of intelligence that would make believe these editors are capable of a simple English major but you are vouching for them so I have to take your word.
When I read Walking Dead 100 the comic put you as the reader there helpless with the characters you cared about on your knees helpless with your hands tied then boom Glenn was dead! I actually shouted out in shock. You need to care about the characters. You were arguing for EXACTLY what Stan Lee talks about. Peter's got to get medicine back to Aunt May now and someone needs to have their life saved from a brutal villain right in front of him everything is riding on what is happening next.
Not only do editors not understand basic story they think the reader buys the comic for the costume not the character. Peter Parker is Spiderman not the costume, We read to see Spiderman overcome obstacles and follow his drama. Action, Drama, Adventure It worked for a long time then they seem to have purposefully gone out of their ways to break the IPs. It could be fixed but not by these fools.

I graduated HS in the summer of '91, and Todd's art drew me back into comic book collecting. I bought every version of every book/cover he did, and when Spawn came out, my young, broke self even bought 23 copies of Spawn issue #1. I was obessed. Over the years, I traded or sold many of my various comics, but the ones I would never part with, and still have to this day, are my McFarlanes. • @JR-ju3kj
      @JR-ju3kj 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@mpeacraft8585 Marvel and DC have ALWAYS shunned artists who to want to create their own characters.
It's never not been that way.Anyone who created or creates a character for Marvel and DC does so with the implicit understanding that they don't own the characters and that they never will.EVEN the late, great Stan Lee,for all of his accomplishments and for all of the great characters that he created, said that all he ever was,was an employee at Marvel and that he never owned any of the characters(Stan also said in the same interview that Marvel was basically just using him as a figurehead to trot out appearances at movie premieres and for cameos in their movies).I love Marvel and DC and I am a die-hard,life-long comic book fan but don't expect Marvel and DC to embrace artists who want to create their own characters.
Now,having said that, that doesn't mean that Marvel and DC should screw creators over or not give them creator-credit in their books(which they have done time and time again)but Marvel and DC have never been and WILL never be the places for creator-owned characters.

    • @JR-ju3kj
      @JR-ju3kj 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@mpeacraft8585 If artists and writers want to create their own characters then what they should do and what they need to do is go to publishers like Image Comics and Dark Horse Comics with their ideas-that's what I intend to do with the ideas that I have for comic books that I want to write.
Remember that companies where the creators had the power and the ownership of their characters didn't exist for the longest time until people decided to create the companies where the artists and the writers can own their own creations and make money off of them and be paid what they should be. It would have been great if companies like Image and Dark Horse were around in the era of Jerry Siegel, Joe Schuster,Jack Kirby,Steve Ditko and all of the other many comic book greats. But the industry wasn't ready for that yet,
NOW,writers and artists have more options-if they want to create their own characters and OWN them and make money off of them and not have to answer to anyone- there are publishers that now exist that they can go to. But Marvel and DC are big, corporate machines and that's not what they're about-like Marc Silvestri said, they don;t want the artists(and the writers,I would argue)to shine, they just want the characters and stories to shine(even though there's absolutely no reason that it can't be BOTH since obviously,it's not like these characters are creating and drawing themselves and like the stories are writing themselves).

I was lucky to have the pleasure of meeting Todd McFarlane at the Art Institute of Phoenix back in the early 2000's. He was promoting women in the comic industry and doing a seminar there. He also showcased a few teaser clips from the Spawn 2nd season of the animated series to show as examples of how the design pipeline worked and how the designers and team communicated. I'm a huge toy fan and can honestly say Todd took the whole industry up with him as the gold standard for action figures. I still have probably 20+ Spawn toys in the package plus all the loose ones...I was elated to learn he got the DC license...currently have 12 of the multiverse figures and will be getting way more! Bottom line is Todd just gives it his best and nothing else will do. We as fans win because of it!

  • @LATVERIAN1

Back in the early 1990s, I attended a small comic con over at The Sahara Hotel in Las Vegas.
I recall some pretty impressive guest stars whom made the con bigger than what it was. For
instance; there was both; Adam West & Burt Ward. The cast from the original "Texas Chainsaw
Massacre". The "legendary" Stan Lee. And of coarse; Todd McFarlane; just to name a few. At
this time; I wasn't nearly the McFarlane fan I am now. So much of my attention was drawn
mainly to Stan Lee. And believe it or not, while there was a consistent mob drawn to Todd's
area, Stan was pretty much left alone. (*to this day that aspect really baffles me*) What was
cool is that both me, and my brother, almost had Stan Lee all to ourselves. There were no lines
to see Stan Lee. So we both, more or less, simply hung out with Stan, and had pictures taken with him.
It was pure awesomeness. But back to Todd. On the second day of the con, we decided to wait
in line to meet Todd McFarlane, and get some autographs. The endless line wrapped around
some tables which impaired our view of Todd. In his place was what appeared to be his personal
team who had various McFarlane comics & prints, for sale, in case someone wanted something
a little extra to be signed by Todd by the time he, or she, got there. One of his "team" I found pretty
stunning. I've always had a crush on Meg Ryan. And to me, this lady looked much like her. So
being that there were no flies on me, I steadied myself before finally reaching her. Wearing a
classic John Romita Sr. Spider-Man shirt, I tried inventing a decent line, and asked her if she'd
be interested in having dinner with me sometime. In a kind response, she thanked me for the
offer, but said, "I'm married to Todd", pointing around the tables towards him. In response, I
apologized, telling her I didn't know. Truly, this was one of my most remembered embarrassing
moments. So now, looking at this post, this is the very first time I've seen "Mrs". McFarlane
since that fateful day, so many years ago. And I've gotta say; "I'll be darned if she didn't look like Meg Ryan".
Anyway, if Todd McFarlane happens to be reading this post; to him I say, "I am sorry for asking out your wife.
Not only are you an incredible artist, but you also have amazing taste in women, sir. And if you don't
    already know it; you're blessed."
    Signed, Daniel
