    Great video! I just have one correction to make.
    Meta doesn’t mean “Most Effective Tactic Available”; that is a backronym.
    “Meta” actually comes from a prefix taken from Greek which means “after” or “beyond”. This is where “metamorphosis” and “metalanguage” come from.
    Similarly, it is called “metagaming” because you are playing the game “beyond” the actual game, like using advanced strategies and glitches and different hardware.

      Thanks for the concise explanation, I'll pin this. When I came across the acronym I knew it wasn't the origin of the term, but felt it would make the concept easier to understand for everyone watching - didn't wanna lose everyone halfway through. Though I understand mentioning that it's a backronym would've been more responsible. If I make a similar decision in future videos I'll be sure to note that either on screen or verbally. Glad you still enjoyed the video despite that slip :)

      Not speedrunning, but in the Guitar Hero community, there's a malfunction with some Guitar controllers that causes the strum bar to flick back up if you hit it a certain way, and we learned to exploit that malfunction in a method called 'rake strumming'. This basically gave you two strums in one motion, allowing one to effectively strum twice as fast. But unlike the gamer gunk method, we always understood that it was a malfunction since the beginning, but still sought after controllers with it for a good while. It wasn't until these controllers became so malfunctioned due our excessive exploitation of this effect that they became effectively unusable, that we began to finally reject this method. So the moral of the story is, don't let the META conflict with the accessibility of the game. I'm glad the BFBB community was able to come to this conclusion before any significant damage was done, and I wish the Guitar Hero community would have realized it sooner.

    When the HDDs start dying, will the next switch be to SSDs? Or has this not even been given proper consideration yet? The firmware/mobo available on the original Xbox will probably have limited read/write speeds relative to SSDs, so it's very likely that pretty much any off-the-shelf SSD would be able to max out that connection. This means it should be an accessible mod, of course barring any special adapters necessary to actually connect the SSD.

    • @satibel
      @satibel 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      afaik it's ide so 133MBps is the max, and that's what a good hdd can read at.
      even then, I'm not sure its ide reads at 133MBps, so the difference might be like 30% faster loads, but that'd be like a second of time save.

    • @darkhanzo
      @darkhanzo 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Xbox used IDE to communicate with the HDD so an SSD's speed would be completely wasted. Even modern conventional HDD's will max the read write speeds. That's not even getting into the challenge of finding and SSD that is even compatible with the Xbox. The problem is that you can't just slap any old HDD into an Xbox, it must be a specific model, and there are spreadsheets listing which models work. Then, once you find one that is compatible you'll need to buy an IDE to SATA adapter.
      The short of it is that replacing or upgrading the HDD in an Xbox is not plug and play.

    • @satibel

  • @LanIost
    @LanIost 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    You wanna talk about meta? I used to assembly line mod my friends XBOXs circa.. I dunno... 2003? So much so that if you live in Columbus, Ohio and have one I have often found that it traced back to me or at the very least, one of my friends. If you could speed run console modding, I would like to see someone who was faster than me at it. I didn't use any stinkin' memory cards! All I used was my PC, like a REAL turbo ner..MAN DOES! Also, it meant that I didn't have to buy shit. No more hard modding with my rear window heater repair kit. This is as barebones as you can get ... and it was technically also dangerous so naturally my girlfriend got pregnant.. for a week or two thank god.
    So anyway, you can do it with NOTHING but a screwdriver and PC that still has support for IDE hard drives. The xbox unlocks the hard drives when it starts up so.. you start your PC, hit the physical pause button on your keyboard on the screen that says "Detecting drives...." during start up. Then, you turn on the xbox and have it boot to the stock menu. I always then go to the file select screen and back to the front a few times to make sure it's unlocked the drive. Then you unplug the IDE cable and replace it with one in your PC while keeping the power on. That is, you hot swap it after the XBOX has done the work to allow it to be read. ... Then it's as simple as booting the PC and accessing the drive and copying over the few files needed to do the exploit.
    This sounds possibly more complex, but trust me.. I literally got to the point that I could line up 5 consoles, unscrew them all, and then per each one get it done within like 1.5 minutes with my own super slimmed down Linux distro that JUST booted to a file manager where I selected the drive and hit copy... Could be done ever faster.
    Boot xbox and pc.. hit pause on pc. Access drive on xbox clickity clickity.. swap cables... hit enter to continue drive detection... Done, booting linux.. done, copy and..... complete.
    I am so cool. 😎
    But yeah, somewhere I have this disc for fast soft modding, although I guarantee it looks like the gross discs used in this video as I'm pretty sure I spilled a can of coke on spindle of discs containing it but was literally going to be late for work so I just said fuck it and left. ... I know this spindle.. Removing discs from it is terrifying. You can't just soak it in water, I've tried. ... Every time you remove a disc it either comes off clean or ... parts of it stick to the next disc. .. All my coding and computing history is on this spindle. SHHHHHhhh DONT TOUCH. As it stands it's all there and I don't wanna lose it.
    ... Without it, am I cool? ='(

    If a DVD is scratched in just the right spot, then the data will remain intact, but the tracking laser will detect the scratch and overcompensate, causing the video to skip during normal playback. However, you could rewatch the skipped bits of video by rewinding. Again, the data was still there, the laser was just skipping over it because it shifted to dodge what it thought was a dust particle.

    i think the future of speedruns is emulation. its way easier to repair a pc compared to a video console and you also have a much easier controlled environment if your looking for glitches. of cause you have to make sure that the emulation is accurate to the console and game like mario 64 which has lag reduction as a necessary strat, that makes running the game way harder to run, and could fall away with "bad" emulation thanks too to much power for the emulated console. it should always be possible to technically get the best possible time on emulator on real hardware in perfect condition. this way you make sure that on the one side you don't get weird times thanks to faulty hardware of which its hard to find the reason where the difference comes from but also don't get impossible times thanks to basically a steroids version of a console which is basically just the same as modifying the console.

    This is a really interesting video. I came here from part 1. I was initially disgusted, but it seems like a really interesting, and very niche hobby within what is already considered to be a very niche hobby, and I can respect that. I find it very interesting that the community goes so far as to not allow consoles to be opened at all, if that is what I can correctly gather from this. It's all the more reason I personally prefer digital preservation, and when I play original Xbox games, I do so off of a hard drive. I'm honestly surprised that a community such as this hasn't agreed upon a standardized set of modifications for a console if playing off of a hard drive. For example, using a very specific model of hard drive, with a very specific set of cables/adapter boards. It would help with preservation of the copies of the games that you enjoy so much, and you wouldn't be wearing out your physical media, and could instead display it if you so chose.

The bacronym for meta is useful in explaining metagaming, the way the game is played. I think that making everyone speed run on same version, hardware ect. is something that is totally viable with digital storage. It will completely change how runs are done, but it will force runners to actually play the game in a regular sense. I think this will make speed running more open to others, as it allows newbies to have a chance. You won't have to learn a crazy 359 degree lag switch turn jump to even be able to compete. Now, you can purely just get really good at the game and let that define who is best. That, in my opinion, is how speedrunning should have always been. Pure skill.

    I'm not a speedrunner but I really enjoy these videos. While watching this video I had an idea. Maybe the glitch could still be possible while using the game downloaded to the HDD. By strategically saving and deleting files on the HDD you could force a fragmentation of the specific data sections needed for the glitch over different parts of the HDD. Thus causing the read/write heads of the HDD to be forced to travel longer distances and thus increase load time for these specific data sections while keeping fast load times for the rest of the game.

    I know you said the hard disks were barely used in the Xbox, but it still worries me - those hard drives are nearing 20 years old themselves and could fail quicker than would perhaps be expected due to their sheer age and possible past rough handling. I will admit I have nothing to back this up, but it may be worth checking the SMART data on some of these drives as they are used to get a good idea of how old they are and how they progress as they are used for BfBB. Maybe allowing hard drive loading onto non-official IDE hard drives will become a consideration if this turns out to be the case.

    The whole scratch vs smudging thing kinda reminds me about things like using performance enhancing drugs in sports. Where as smudging it is just kinda like the pair of shoes an athlete chooses to wear. While the drugs would give you a momentary advantage in a one or a few contests eventually it’s going to damage your body and wear it out. Besides it’s physically altering the thing that’s being judged, the athlete’s body in the metaphor but the game in this case. Where as smudging it is more like the athlete using an old pair of reliable shoes that might be worn in just the right way to give them an edge. Nothing is majorly altered in an unfair way and it might be mostly replicable but it’s only gonna be kind of a good option and there’s still many more that are better.
