      I mean, as far as the viewers go, they could just click off the stream and go elsewhere in the meantime. No matter how much of a SHiFT fan you are, the internet is far too large and easily accessible to say that there wasn't anything better they could do.

    I totally think the nail will be hit on the head on the 3rd subathon. The formula will be worth striving for. From the games, the time system, and the community, we'll get this shit down. Strong and good.

    I think a 3rd Sub-A-Thon with the perspective of knowing it is capped beforehand will create a much less toxic environment in regards to the timer. Instead of the chat needing to fight and struggle to keep it going, even when they shouldn't, that effort can be more positively funneled into the idea of spending that limited amount of stream time trying to get as many incentives funded while the event is going.
    A holiday themed event also sounds like it would be a lot of fun as well, especially since most people are in agreement that the holiday season is about giving and fun, which sounds very much like what the Sub-a-Thons have been about in the first place. A lot of important lessons learned from all the previous events and if anyone can get the 3rd one figured out, I know that Mr. Movie will be the one to get it right.
    Thank you for all the content, as always!

    A great history and lookback on the events leading up to and including the 2 Sub-a-thons, both were enjoyable in every aspect and I am happy to have been a part and involved with both of them, at the very least as a viewer!! Loved them man, I hope that everything you learned from the last two will make the future ones better and a greater experience for everyone involved- yourself included.

    Honestly, I think Incredithon was my favorite part of the subathons. It transitioned so well from movie madness (which I still love to death) but still felt super unique and had its own meme identity within the first hour. Still loved the second subathon despite the lesser parts and I know if you decide to do a 3rd one you'll absolutely knock it out of the park!

      Agreed. I was disappointed at first finding out movie was beaten meaning the stream would end, only to get flung into incredi-madness and I loved it.

Thanks for putting it out man, clearly a lot of care and effort went in to it and it 100% payed off imo

  • @PesutoMurasa

    Honestly, these sub-a-thon's got me reinvested in checking in with you and the rest of your community, I've even been planning fan edits of the 2022 one (granted, life and a general lack of creative direction for video making at the moment has prevented that.) Before that, I had only ever shown up for a few streams in 2018 and a handful in 2020/2021 It's a shame I'm never truly able to stop by and shoot the breeze with you and the chat as often as I'd like to, be it schedule differences or otherwise, but I'm glad to be there for the events when I can be.
    To make things short, your efforts don't go unnoticed, and I think it's safe to say the sub-a-thons are a learning experience for all of us at the end of the day. I know I'll be doing my best to pop in for a little while if and when the next one rolls around, and hopefully I can make that statement apply to a normal speedrun stream as well. I never leave one of your streams feeling bored or unsatisfied. Thank you for all the hard work SHiFT, I know this is a bit winded, but I had a lot to say.

If you decide to go through with it, infinitely hyped for Shiftmas and here's hoping it's a blast with all that we've learned. You have my respect for the production quality of this vid, as many of your TH-cam videos have. The Sponge-a-thon from August 2022 was the coolest most hype event to be a part of, awesome memories made. 2023 had some cool elements for a sub-a-thon, but I feel the main "issue" or reason it wasn't potentially "as successful" could relate to a lack of direct theming around a specific game and or goal in a game, like you stated early in this video, bringing the audience along for the ride is what makes things feel so exciting for some reason. There needs to be a balance of consistent challenge gameplay with a goal in mind and games that chat gets to vote on by other means that channel points or donos. A fair way to pick games from the majority, something like a straw poll "could" work, if you bring them up on stream at the times where the chat and viewership is most active. Anyway. good video, the constant conversation is nice, the flow of your words and pacing is nice. You're a good entertainer, and very innovative so I know if you decide to do another sub-a-thon it will be successful. Try not to put unnecessary pressure to out-do previous years, treat each new sub-a-thon as it's own unique experience/opportunity for the community to come together in a fun way.

    What a great retrospective, I was looking forward to this. The first sub-a-thon was a blast but it left a sour taste in my mouth afterwards, and I haven't watched your streams a lot since cause of time (didn't even watch any of the sponge-a-thon which I kinda regret lol). I look forward to whatever content you make in the future tho, hope I can watch the 3rd subathon. Movie forever.

  • @breadmilkYT
    @breadmilkYT 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    I loved both events, however I think the first one had a certain chaotic magic that made it my favorite. I enjoyed the second as well but I feel as if something was off, something didn't feel right about the whole thing. I didn't watch this through yet but the insane movie challenge turning into the incredithon cant be remade and a certain formula can be nailed to be consistently fun with less bad/ugly. Maybe having a single main challenge like movie be the focu THEN branching to a list would be good rather than starting with the list
    Edit: Finished it, amazing video and it's really cool to see how all the little changes from the first one positively or negatively impacted the second. I think a cap for the third one would be really good considering edging wouldn't be as impactful and it would make timing out content a lot easier. Godspeed to the future Shift #movieforever

    I think that shorter themed sub events that are more frequent would be more suitable. Nothing longer than a month and it happens 2 or 3 times a year. Also using themes like “AMERICAN” games for the 4th of July, or Spooky games for October. Also just doing games adapted from movies would be fun. I feel like most people will watch any game if there is a set theme. Whatever you do I will be there laughing with you though. ❤

  • @pureo_nikku
    @pureo_nikku 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I imagine it was difficult to pare down all of this and reflect, to put it all into one script just for this. Especially considering we legit got to see your internal struggle of how to feel about each stage of planning, game choice, what fans were saying, when to end it, edging etc at different points of it (almost daily). There was a magic to it but I felt bad that it seemed to take a toll on you. I really enjoyed this though. If anything it shows you're able to look at it objectively, introspectively, and are able to explain its significance to someone who is an outsider.

    I wasn’t here for movie madness and discovered your twitch stream during the 3rd day of the spongeathon after TH-cam randomly recommended your 43:06 to me. I’ve been watching your streams and videos and have enjoyed them a lot, and I also decided to join the rehydrated speedrunning community, which I didn’t even know was a remake until I found your channel. One thing, the rage channels are not publicly addressed well enough. The started showing up in my feed just after I saw your first video, and they honestly almost made me stop watching, although ironically, I watched a video of theirs when you talked about the hate channels which made me realize that they were in the wrong. Here on TH-cam, these rage channels need to be exposed and made well known to prevent new viewers like me from being tricked.
    Generally during the subathon, the games I liked most were the titles I were familiar with and would be interested in seeing other people play, while obscure titles for outdated consoles, like aqua teen for example, felt slow and boring. Im 15, which is probably younger than your average viewer, but I wouldn’t be surprised if other older people felt this way.
    Finally, I think it’s probably best that subathons are capped one way or another. At the point before the end, it felt like it was dragging on really hard. Im not sure it has to be a time cap though. For example, the movie madness could have been capped when you beat the challenge. The spongeathon could have been set to end once the list of spongebob games was completed, and maybe you could have create an incentive that allows donors to add games that they want to the list. The goal has to be more than “make the stream last as long as possible”

    Damn. I knew I got spaced out for much of the subathon this year, but looks like i missed more than I realized. And yeah, that beeping timer woke me up a lot throughout the month, so whoever was trolling with that is a dick. That being said, i still really enjoyed the Wii Sports, the Bob games, and the Sportsball. Always a lot of fun. Hopefully if you do another one of these I'll actually be able to give this time lol

    The Shift-A-Thons are fun!.. But they go on too long, I'm afraid. Live long enough to become the villain and all that, right? Movie forever, may the S.S. Movie sail on forever.

    @mr.goodboi2780 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I wasn't there for the streams, but I think this was an interesting watch. I might have to check out the third subathon in December. Overall, I think you just need to quit when you get tired/mad, no matter where the timer is, it just gives people ammo against you. Also, limiting it to a much shorter time frame (12 days) is better than what, 80 days you said? That's insane. Don't let people push you over the edge. That being said, it's fun to see you play garbage. You should do more of that, lol.

  • @lukfidel7427

    dude you're good, i can tell you put effort in what you do and you genuinely want to entertain your audience, maybe being hard on yourself like some highlights show you is a gag, but i can see a little through, don't mean to disrespect, and i can tell like the documentary you wanted to do on the subathon, you tend to exalt a bit the reach of your goals sometimes, and then you end up being too hard on yourself, you don't have to make it all spongebob or bikini bottom, you can take a few breaks or change the format of what you have in mind, like i said i'm not trying to get on your nerves, just maybe adding a point you couldn't see before or maybe can't contemplate because you need to prove something to yourself, keep having fun man, i'll be rooting for that sub 40

    • @lukfidel7427
      @lukfidel7427 15 วันที่ผ่านมา

      my point is we want to see you, can we want to see you doing good... wether is spongebob or whatever, i just like watching a cool guy who enjoys the game and jokes about stuff while doign it, if you're the best at it then even better

    • @SHiFTss
      @SHiFTss  15 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I appreciate the sentiment but did you watch either of these marathons? The majority of the content had nothing to do with SpongeBob.

    I don't know how to say this, but it's something negative I experienced that I want to get off my chest.
    In the last few weeks of the Incredi-thon and especially during Family Guy, I felt SO much pressure to donate. During the 2nd subathon, I felt like I had to keep giving money beyond what I could afford, just for the sake of the subathon not ending. It was partially for myself and the other viewers, but it was mostly to make *you* feel better.
    I tuned into the stream almost every night in October of 2022, and there were several in a row where you would spend *hours* explaining the sub mechanics/getting upset at the constant edging. In the last week of Family Guy, you would be mostly silent unless you were talking about the money aspect. I understand you were extremely frustrated and tired, but the frequency and intensity of your words guilted me into more donations. I spent $200-250 more than I had that month.
    I felt uncomfortable enough with my parasocial relationship to you that I stopped coming to the stream. I lurk every once in a while, now. *I* needed to be more responsible with my money, but I also hope that you think about how much influence you have over your young-adult/college-age viewers. The ones who do watch you every night and really like you. And how asking for money every 5 minutes, no matter the circumstances, can become dangerous.

      As stated in the video all I can do is reflect and adjust how I run my stream over time. The first sub-a-thon had a lot of hyping up the timer and sub goals, the second was far less focused on the timer and goals but more on the games we were playing. I believe all of this was covered in the video thoroughly if you watched the full thing. Never did I outright ask for money in either of these events, and feeling pressured to donate during a live sub-a-thon is unfortunately a side effect for sub-a-thons in general for many people. I would urge you to distance yourself from these kinds of events if you feel that urge and know you've had trouble controlling yourself in the past, which seems is what you have done. Remember as well, as mentioned in the video, a lot of people felt the opposite this year and preferred me announcing the timer and hyping it up. It's not the end of the world if a sub-a-thon ends, but last year it certainly felt that way for a lot of people including myself at times. This is why I capped it at 80 days this year even though we didn't make it there, because last year when I tried to offer a cap the viewers could not agree to it. Clearly there needs to be an end point to avoid these events turning into black holes, and like I said before, all I can do is improve over time with how I organize and handle these things. Last year's exploding into what it became was a lot to mentally process and mistakes were made. I hope you can put that frustration you observed into perspective seeing as it was a confusing time for me, and notice how I've reflected, improved this year, and plan to improve further.
      Receiving money does not make me "feel" better, what was making me feel upset was watching the chat tear itself apart over other people not donating. Like seeing "fuck you edgers" at the end of this year's sub-a-thon was just sad and hard to read. Like I said, I'm not sure how to stop this from happening especially since it was apparently going on while I was sleeping last year, but I hope addressing it in this video will at least encourage people to be more mindful of how that affects everyone watching and the streamer they're trying to support. And of course, not allowing myself to sleep contributed to the frustration but that has been addressed and I sincerely regard it as a horrible mistake. The feeling of chat not wanting the stream to end while I never "had" enough time for allowing myself to sleep created some psychological gymnastics we'd be far better without, to say the least.
      And as you touched on before, these feelings are indeed parasocial for people. There were several people I had to explain to last year how me hyping up sub match offers from chat: "we only need 1 more for the 5 match" etc was not a personal invitation to any particular person to donate. A lot of people do feel that personal attachment to the things I say even if they're general statements, and this feeling can even be expanded to the people who have obsessed over + harassed me thought my time streaming as they felt personally attacked by chat moderation or a ban - it's not personal. I know it seems off-topic, but it's an example that transcends these events and persists throughout all my streams, so I've thought about it quite a bit as I experience it daily. For these reasons I've slowly tried to deintegrate my personal life from the stream to help avoid creating some of these parasocial attachments which are not only unhealthy but dangerous for a lot of people including me. These are all things I've thought about and considered even for outside the sub-a-thons and I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks about it. I've been streaming since I was 19 years old, and within 6 months I was already in a position to realistically turn it into a full-time living. Much like the first sub-a-thon, the general streaming timeline happened far too quickly for someone that young to know exactly how to navigate it, and for the past 7-8 years I've been hit hard with the consequences of the many mistakes I've made and flaws I haven't recognized. This is only one of many examples, but I hope my point of view is at least understandable. For many years while I was in school full-time and streaming full-time at the same time, my chat was my only "social" interaction - especially during the pandemic. I'm sure some of these things are a consequence of that, or maybe I'm just overthinking and it's all just part of streaming yourself to the Internet. Either way, I'd prefer not to relinquish responsibility over that thought. If there's a way to make things better I'll always try.

      @@SHiFTss I did watch the whole thing first. I appreciate how much you personally reflected after some time has passed, and that you are giving yourself a higher standard for your mental health. It really was hard to watch things get bad for you like they did. I'm also glad that, overall, the latest subathon went smoothly/was less stressful!
      I think in this video you addressed a bunch of good things, but what I didn't see and was personally disappointed by was an indication that you may have been a primary source of the animosity in chat. If watching the chat tear itself up over other people not donating was what made you feel so upset, it's important to think about why the chat was acting so tense. The constant stress and anger you were vocalizing rubbed off on the chat, I think. Much of your community--and like you've said, this is a problem with lots of Twitch communities--is going to show support in any way they think Shift will appreciate. Sometimes, that meant we weren't helpful to you and just agreed with what you said. Agreed that the timer running out was the worst thing that could ever happen. It was an echo chamber.
      I will never know how hard it is to regulate a chat or a whole community of people who are passionate about your work, and who will take your words and j u s t run with them. That has to be so utterly stressful and annoying. I've seen you react angrily to critique and especially concerns over your health; I'm sure feels really belittling. It made me scared to share my own feelings on the whole thing and on how you ran things but hearing you ask for everyone's thoughts at the end of the video felt like a good opportunity to talk about it. I'm glad that I can share with you my honest experience. I still had a LOT of fun, like holy shit what an incredi-vent.....but yeah, got plenty of thinking to do, lol.

       @SHiFTss Okay, I see, you just edited it. Would've loved if YT showed me that right away, lol.
      19 years old and it took off right away into an 8-year deal...yeah, that would fuck with me too. What you described makes 100% sense. It must've felt weird at times to combine your work and friends into *one thing* like that. I'm trying to expand how distant I felt from my friends during the pandemic to a period of that many years. I've been very lucky with being able to find friends in person that I genuinely really like hanging out with. My older brother, who introduced me to you like 5 years ago, is in a more similar position to you so I know he would be able to empathize a lot with that struggle.
      Thank you for sharing so much of your own experience with this, too. I haven't been around since the very beginning or anything, but I can see how much better things have gotten for you on a personal level. I've of course seen all sorts of "Shift RAGE comps!!!" and I never took them at face value. People who make videos like that are clout-chasing apathetic losers; they don't care about or literally can't see the bigger picture of your life.

      I suppose that's where we disagree, most of the time in this recent sub-a-thon I was not talking about the timer or donations and people were still reacting in an unhealthy way to the timer falling low. I also mentioned here and in the video, at least with on-screen text, that this attitude already existed as far back as the sections when I was sleeping at the beginning of the first sub-a-thon and was far more aggressive when I wasn't there to see or comment on it. I'll restate that this might just be something we can't control or fully alleviate. We can only talk about it to make more people aware of how this behavior comes off. Seeing people act like this, especially hearing from people who received DMs from viewers asking them to donate more, can be enraging for me as the guy who built up this community my entire adult life. But yeah, I chose to make an example of someone who made a harmless comment and that was wrong, even if it didn't seem harmless at the time. I know the exhaustion was feeding into the frustration but that's still no excuse.
      As for the people who make those videos I believe that's some kind of unhealthy parasocial attachment as well, because I notice a lot of projection onto how my real life is without knowing anything about it.
      Gotta do a lot of edits unfortunately since I'm on mobile and it's a pain trying to respond to everything when you can't read the full comment lol

      That's a pretty disingenuous way of summarizing my frustration with some of the attitudes from people who participated in these sub-a-thons.
