I think everyone is missing the point of what made this game truly special. I played this game multiple times as a kid. What really stands out is, the game is a legitimate love letter to the show. At 6 years old this was the first time I could interact with every single location and character from the show. Getting to explore the layout of SpongeBobs house, discovering the mermalair hidden under the couch, walking through the Kelp Forrest, on and on. This game was really special. It was like watching the show but physically being there. Every location amazed me and there wasn’t a moment where I was let down.

Fuck this comment hits right in the nostalgia spot...I remember going to my friend's pool party with just the 3 of us, coming back to his place and playing this game until 2am, when we got stuck on the flying dutchman's graveyard...a couple years later, saw the game at a blockbuster, rented it, got to the last boss only for my memory card to get corrupted.
yeah, I feel like if you're not very familiar with the show you won't appreciate the game as much. It with still be good but you aren't gonna know what a thrill it is to get to slide down sand mountain, explore the mermalair, catch king jellyfish etc. if you never saw it on tv first.

I used to think you couldn’t enter the theater at all in the remake, that was sure stupid, but not as stupid as ruining the theater experience this year, same goes for the remake.
I was worried, so I made a backup save file in a separate slot. Holy carp, the disappointment after I grinded from nothing(spent it all on getting Spatula's from Mr.Krabs), only to be rewarded with less than what I got from an ad for the game...
Would have been a lot worse if I didn't have the backup save file...
Then it's a good thing I didn't bother grinding for 40000 more Shiny Objects.

This was one of the first games I’ve ever played as a kid. Hopes up for a remake of the movie game!

Simple but fun. Coming from my experience with the original game, I cannot tell you how joy it was replaying this game remastered. Yes there are bugs here and there, but the visual are glorious, and what they did fix in the gameplay and game physics is astounding. There were points in the original where I would be tearing my hair out that have been polished to perfection (mostly with things like the sand boarding and wall jumping sections). The only thing I didn't like (I didn't play the multiplayer) was the last bit of grinding to get the last spatulas from Mr. Krabs, I think they raised the prices for those).

I feel the issue is how vibrant everything is. If they desaturate the environments but kept the characters and collectibles with that same vibrant colors, everything would look better
It’s kinda got a similar issue to Wind Waker HD, where the environments are nice, but the added lighting effects take away some of the original charm.

The fact that they blocked off the glitches actually makes me think of how happy I was that Nintendo purposely left in the Gale Boomerang glitch - and basically most all of the other speedrunning tricks - in the HD remaster of Twilight Princess. The only thing they really removed was the early Master Sword glitch by putting up an invisible wall, but that was such a game breaking glitch that I don't even mind it not being there anymore. The boomerang glitch is so ridiculously OP for speedrunning that it's awesome Nintendo left it in tact for us.
Nintendo didn't make the HD version, it would have been more work to fix all those problems. For this game they would have to add in the glitches which is just... odd.
While they got rid of a lot of the original glitches, there’s still a bunch of new ones that can be utilized, and I’m kind of all for that. If speed running was exactly the same just with some better graphics, frankly what would be the point

@@flob.1276 Seeing as how they put up an invisible wall to make EMS impossible, they chose to leave in the other glitches. The Gale Boomerang glitch isn't in the Wii version. Since the original build of the game was on GameCube and had to be flipped to make Link right handed for the Wii's motion controls, I assume they probably fixed the boomerang glitch since you would think the code being left the same (save for everything just being mirrored) would result in the glitch still being there.
The HD release is obviously the GameCube version since it's unflipped, but why fix one huge glitch and not the other, arguably biggest glitch in the game besides EMS? So I've always just assumed they purposely left it in there. Nintendo knows what people do with their games online; that's why they knew to put up the wall to prevent EMS in the first place. 🤷

They could’ve just included a boss rush mode where you can fight all the bosses from the game: mini bosses, main bosses (they also could have restored the final boss’s cut phase), and even the cut boss: Robo-Squidward (in a way that’s not a horde mode). That would have been much more interesting.
"Cut Multiplayer mode"
The multiplayer mode was never planned for the original, Purple Lamp Studios said they'd restore unused content. It later turned out that they didn't want to change things too much for speedrunners, so they only restored this content in the bonus multiplayer mode.
The Crash And Spyro remakes gave us some things that were new that weren’t in the originals while staying true to the originals, so why couldn’t this?!!
I wasn't saying they couldn't, I was pointing out a mistake in the script for the video as the original game never had cut multiplayer mode yet the video says otherwise.

While I think this is a fair review, I wish Jirad had talked more about his enjoyment he mentions finding the socks and stuff. He focuses a lot on the negatives but kinds brushes over what he actually liked. He doesn't really mention the writing or character interaction or the level design or anything. I'd like to know what he thought of these aspects because those are really what make the game for me, and a lot of other fans
Probably because those things didn't really stand out to him as much, given that he's played tons of platformers in his gaming career. His reaction to this game is something close to how I feel about it. Never played the original so I don't have that childhood connection with it, without that the game feels like a fun but unfortunately generic platformer...

The Kelp Forest sandboarding course was awful
The problem I had was that the movement was extremely slow, it almost felt like a lego game, just so much just moving around doing nothing much.
I'm playing it I would have liked a button to run.
I try Ed to use Patrick whenever I could because his attack just let me move barely faster
I got the switch version of the game the other day, and so far it's left a little bit of a bad taste in my mouth.
The graphics look amazing, no doubt. The game is absolutely stunning, even on the switch...which is a problem. It feels like they put the exact same game that released on the PS4 and Xbox One onto the switch. Although that may seem obvious at first, there's a reason many games look not-as-great on switch, and that's because the switch doesn't handle high graphics well. This means that there are a lot of annoyances that come from that much load. Not only does coming back from dying - something that was instant on the original(and probably is still on the PS4 and Xbox) - take up to 30 seconds sometimes now, but there are also sections that stagger down to frame rates so slow I could probably spam a button at the same speed.
The enemies and attacks also feel a little off - at least some of them. One of my biggest peeves is the Tar-Tar robot. In the original, there would be a loud siren before each barrage of tartar sauce, giving you plenty of warning and time in between to hit it. For some reason, the siren only plays when it notices you now, and the pauses in between are almost non-existent. If you hit it once and plan to hit it the second time immediately after, you're almost guaranteed to get hurt from an unforeseen shot.
I don't really have a problem with Spongebob or Sandy in terms of move set. They feel perfectly fine to me, although I do feel a little cheated by not having to build up a swing on the grapple hooks anymore. It's convenient though, so it's fine in my opinion. Patrick, on the other hand, is very unsatisfying. He has two moves exclusive to him - throwing objects and stunning - both of which are flawed in complete opposite ways.
His stunning move is a ground pound that stuns nearby robots so that he can throw them or destroy them easier. The only problem is that there's a *tiny* sweet spot in which the robot has to be for the move to work. A little too far, it's unaffected and attacks you before you can do anything else. A little too close, and you destroy them and have to wait for a new one to try again.
His throwing move technically works perfectly well. You pick up things no problem, and you throw them no problem. My only issue with this is that they made it work a little too well in some cases, especially when it comes to platforming. The game has a target system to make throwing easier - if a target appears, you'll automatically throw it there. That's fine for most cases(buttons, enemies, etc), but when the game targets the platforms you're throwing to, or makes the fruit not bounce once it hits where it's meant to go, it feels a bit like it's holding your hand without reason.
Though I do enjoy what I've played of the game so far, it definitely feels like it needed a bit more play testing to make sure some of the aspects felt right. If all of the controls were intentionally changed to make the game feel new, I could forgive that, but they need to feel good, and not like the game is either screwing you over or walking you throw the obvious parts. Along with this, it would help significantly to down the graphical power of the switch version, even if just a little. It may make the game look less stunning overall, but it would at least make the frame rate tolerable all of the time rather than some of the time, and would make the game not feel like it's on a PS2 disc every time it loads.
@@cocoahere875 Got the switch version as well, the problem is that the attacks feel way faster than the movement, and some details like in the sandy bossfight, like angle and animation or hands just are not clean, and the loading after death is infuriating.

from what I understand a lot of the glitches have been fixed or are in the process of being fixed from updates
I played after the day one patch and had virtually no issues.
Well I don’t blame this game not being polished, it lost 3 months of development because of the pandemic. A lot of that time would’ve been put toward polish.
The issue that everybody is having with the game is that when music, sound effects, plot, enemies, level design, voices, concept art are all done for you youre left with just graphics and polish, and they couldn't do that right, and what they do fix goes against what the game is known for, speed running and personality, which asks the question, what the hell were they doing in that time?
Why does the sea needle need so much draw fog, why can't you see outside the treedome like in the original game?
Also there's a ton of glitches still after the day 1 patch, including floating tikis, if you get hit as patrick while in the middle of throwing a robot it has a chance of glitching the robot to where it hovers but isn't intractable, which broke one of the boardwalk spatulas for me and had to reset the area, you can see plankton under the TV in shady shoals. They didnt even hide him as the trigger for the TV, as its just floating there, instead of, I dunno, a TV stand, lowering the TV, making the TV bigger, and there's still a ton of smaller graphical glitches in the game
Its a game that all the heart in it comes from the game developers that made the original, and the memes that they sprinkled throughout just for memes, not the people who pushed it out

This is honestly the most honest and straightforward review nice job on respecting those like us who loved the game despite the drawbacks. It does feel the re hydrated version don't has the same charm but i has a lot of nostalgia with it. Yeah the multiplayer sucks honestly i don't recommend playing it but the main game is as nostalgic as ever.
(if you love this game please continue to love it) most beautiful words i ever heard from a reviewer respecting those who have passion for this game.
That's why i have more respect for reviews like these. Cause when they explain their position on a franchise or a game that was beloved by so many back in the day then it helps to understand where they're coming from. Do i agree with this rating though: hell no not even close. But he's respectful to not earn hate from me or those who love it.

0:25 this game is *LACKING* polish because it had to get rushed out the door. Especially with COVID. Hopefully they can catch up with patches. The small issues add up quickly.

@Geralt of Trivia I'm sure I'm missing a bunch, but you get the point, It's a great game, but I hope most of those gets fixed:
- Spin doesn't always give you your air stall
- you can bring characters in levels they're not supposed to by accident by using the taxi
- sometimes objective counters bleed into other levels and you just complete the objective on entering
- Missing or unpolished animations (the graveyard is especially bad)
- 360 controllers joystick don't get the full range of motions
- cruse bubble can be used on trampolines, double jumping off of a trampoline sometimes lacks an animation
- the bungee is atrocious to control and sound is gone
- lots of added invisible walls where they don't make sense
- hans in frustrating areas you should be able to access
- a lot of jumps and the bungee are more scripted and you have to fight against it
- sandman stops you from sliding
- way too much fog in slides
- inverted control settings gets reset everytime you change characters
- ice cream goo doesn't move on conveyor belts in robo patrick's fight
- in the final boss plankton can become stuck
- the cruse bubble explosion radius is so tiny compared to the original
- changing areas does not restore underwears
- You can die with 1 underwear
- You can live with 0 underwear
- Lassoing right after grabbing a ledge glitches out the lasso
- You can warp to any level from the start with a double input on the taxi map
- lots of softlocks
- damaging an NPC increases or reduces their size (although that one's funny and doesn't affect gameplay)
- They substantially increased Mr. Krabs' spatulas' price, they were already too high in the original
- Physics are affected by framerate
- Lots of ways to get infinite height
- The ball in mermelair has beach ball physics

Avasam have you reported these to THQ? they have a bug report page and they asked to report things like that so purple lamp can attempt to fix them
One of the things I love about you the most Jirard is not only how positive you are. It's so easy to be negative and with especially the world today, I feel that the positivity is needed even more. Thank you for never shaming fans of games even when you don't like them.

@@cliffturbo2146 All of the bad reviews were extremely confusing to me. I watched the gamexplain review expecting them to see this was qctually really good, and he ended up saying the music sucks lol. The best part about this game imo is the world building; when I think of bikini bottom I think of how it's all perfectly visualized in this game. Each level is a prominate location from the show, and there are too many references and nods to the show to count. You can really tell thw people who made this were really knowledgable about the source material. I've been playing the remake on Switch, and I think it did a really good job of updating the visuals. The performance is kind of spotty, and on the whole I wish I got the pc version, but it's still playable. I've had a ton of fun so far.

Think of it like your favourite book getting a movie adaptation. You'll get to see all your favourite characters in the big screen more vividly than you ever could in your head.
But they add some unnecessary plot points that make little-to-no sense on the context of the original story and, while the acting is good, nothing's quite as whimsical, gripping or charming as the way you imagined it from the words.
BFBB is the book and Rehydrated is the movie.

BFBB has been a game I've wanted to see reviewed on The Completionist since I first subscribed (back when Normalboots was Jon, PBG, The Completionist, and Continue?). It's just one of those games from my childhood that I always wanted to hear Jirard talk about, and the Completionist show itself ended up becoming a huge part of my childhood as well. I didn't expect him to be blown away by it or anything, but I wanted him to have the experience of the game. I guess he got the inferior experience, but for all intents and purposes it's still the same game. Also, Jeremy has a way with words.
Basically, I liked this video.

From someone who has never played the original version, I loved this game! I have no issue with the character movements, and of course the vibrant colors are bright, I mean it's Spongebob after all!

I totally agree with this.
There's so many things missing. Lines that spongebob says. IE when he gets hit by the safe hes supposed to yell ouch. And patrick is supposed to have a record player in his house you can hit. And you're supposed to be able to hit spongebobs TV to see concept art of the various levels. And when you hit the painting in squidwards house hes supposed to yell "hey!". This seems like a really rushed release.

I love the original more than anything, but as soon I heard that the remake's multiplayer was going to be a hoard mode, I knew that it wouldn't be fun. The games combat isn't exactly complex enough to be engaging
The intro made me break out laughing in tears. So well done!

This video was... very honest. It was sure how I felt with the game. Although I never played the original, I knew the charm from it was drastically different. It had a lot of potential but it was lost due to multiple factors.
The rehydrated version was disappointing, not bad at all for what it was, but there were a lot of promises that unfortunately had to be broken.
Well that's kinda why most people who loved the original love this game. It's basically a love letter to them.
I feel like to put things into perspective, and I'm sure the 90s kids are going to lynch me for saying this but...
The original BFBB to a lot of us who grew up with the sixth gen consoles is kinda to us what Banjo is to a lot of people who grew up on the N64.

I think what you're trying to express is something Dunkey already talked about in that while new games tend to be prettier, a lot of older games were more appealing to the eye with their simplicity. He explains it well in I believe his graphics video.
I just found out about that “secret” cutscene at the end too and I also beat the final boss before getting all 100 spatulas, guess I’m playing it through again 🤷🏼♂️

I was today years old when I found out that Battle for Bikini Bottom has such a cult following. I absolutely played it to death as a kid on my gamecube, but I always liked Revenge of the Flying Dutchman way better (so much so I finished RFD many times more than I finished BBB). I think I just prefer more of the "open world" of RFD way more than the linear level design of BBB.
I can't believe you didn't mention the music 😩 I'm not kidding, it's the most nostalgic music of my life. Reminding me of my young ps2 days when I was little. All the tracks regardless of nostalgia are great spongebob songs.

I’m glad you said what you said about the first 3 seasons of Spongebob. I’ve been saying that for the longest and started to feel like I was the only one who felt it. They were hilarious with some episodes having you crying laughing. After that it was just dumb goofy and funny at all.

As somebody who knew a thing or two about movie remasters long before game remasters were so common, I'm still baffled.
@@KeybladeMasterAndy it is a bit confusing, but to put it lightly, a remaster is usually just the same game but ported to a new generation with updated graphics. A remake is the game but completely built from the ground up. There are of course exceptions but this game is more of a remake.

@@stayalivehopefully521 But if you rebuild a game "from the ground up" in a new engine just to improve the graphics and don't change anything gameplay-wise, I would still call that a remaster. A remake, in my book, is when you actually change something note-worthy about the game besides the graphics, such as with Resident Evil 2 and 3, Final Fantasy VII, or MGS: The Twin Snakes.
I think the confusion is justified considering a video game has a lot more nuance and complexity when it comes to whether you can label it a remake or remaster. It's easy to figure out whether a movie is a remake or remaster, but games blur that line a whole lot more. Is it a remaster if they added some significant additional content? Is it a remake if its level design is 1 to 1 but the physics and gameplay are altered to a significant degree? Language and semantics often fail when we attempt to put some games in either of those single word camps.
