Why is Battle for Bikini Bottom SO DANG GOOD!?

- With Cosmic Shake approaching, we absolutely had to fire up the GOAT 3D platformer and see what's cracking. Spongebob Squarepants Battle For Bikini Bottom is way better than it has any right to be, but has it aged well? Following some slanderous reviews from the likes of IGN and Gamespot, I dug in (again) to find out!

As a kid, being able to go into SpongeBob’s house, Squidward’s house, the Krusty Krab, and all those locations was just mind blowing. Great game and great memories attached to it.

I played that before I played battle for bikini bottom. I actually got it for my birthday, a couple weeks before the movie came out.
Very fun game but the back tracking got annoying

Its funny, back then I thought these games were too childish and never touched them. Now, I can appreciate their charm and simplicity: a very pure gaming experience without bs. Weird how things change or better said, how you change.
Man, seeing that ps2 copy with the camo helmet shot me right back to my childhood. I got this and the OG battlefront for ps2 for Christmas in 04.
Battle for Bikini Bottom is an all time favorite of mine. I lost my mind when it was announced that it was being remade. One of the few gaming miracles to happen thanks to fans and social media.
Now we just need a Metalarms remake.
bfbb will and forever be apart of my childhood. just the way the games handles plus how nostalgic it feels anytime i boot up my ps2, this plus lights camera pants, cftkk and atlantis squarpantis (DS) will always be the best spongebob games in my opinion.

It’s a very good game, but don’t sleep on the movie game either! I guess it was kind of like a sequel, you only get to play as SpongeBob and Patrick but damn it was so good.
My first experience with Spongebob BFBB was with Rehydrated on Switch. Other than the performance issues, the cult classic game held in high regard by fans was worth playing. I had a genuine fun time with Rehydrated. I'm excited for Cosmic Shake! Spongebob's moveset seems to have absorbed Patrick and Sandy's abilities, but as a result he looks and feels way more fleshed out. I do hope to see Patrick and Sandy playable again in the future with a new diverse moveset like Spongebob though. Either way just 4 more days until release. I hope the reviews will be more fair towards the game because it really looks like Purple Lamp put their heart and soul into what could be BFBB's successor. Spongebob's future in games looks bright!
If you really enjoy BFBB, check out the speed running for the original game. Rehydrated is a fine remake, but the original has some wacky, some nightmare fuel, things you can do in it that utterly break the way the game is played, including soloing Spongebob through everything, even Sandy's massive jump and glide or Texas swing sections
@@Chronoflation During the release period of Rehydrated, I found out about Shift and the speedrunning community for the game. I wish I could utilize cruise boosting in the remake. The movement in the original looked better though.

I loved seeing all the locations from the show, the controls, and the replayability of it! I really like when games make it so that you can revisit old levels with new abilities to open new areas and challenges. The game always feels fresh and never boring
I love how this review takes its time more than most other reviews! The Christmas story and the overview of the box art give your review a personal touch and I really liked that about it!
I loved this game as a kid, one of my only video games growing up too. I didn't know about the remake until it was free on PS+ and I was so happy. 100% the game in a month.

Like you, this is one I grew up with and was probably among the first games I ever completed. After watching this video, I was inspired to go out and pick up a PHYSICAL copy of the game. It was only fifteen dollars, and that's game #45 for my physical Switch collection.
Never played this game as a kid. I played the PS1 2D platformer one that is hard as nails.
I'd love to pick up the Rehydrated version just for convenience in the future.

Look up the original's speedruns. You'll see why this game was so special. Rehydrated is fun and fine, but that ones on steam and has a little more flare to it than the remake with the controls

Hey Matty, great video I love this game and I just passed the remaster a few months ago. I was wondering, do you collect all 8th and 9th gen games for PlayStation? I've noticed that all ur 7th gen games are almost all for 360 and 8th and 9th gen for PlayStation, is there a reason?
I’m almost 32 and totally agree that SpongeBob is still really good especially the earlier seasons. I think one reason SpongeBob is so big in meme culture is bc of how much it resonates with an older audience that grew up with it that still like it. I don’t think it’s the best platformer but it’s solid.

I never played bfbb as a kid, although I did play a bit of ‘revenge of the Flying Dutchman’😅, but grew up with the show like you so playing this last year with my 6 year old niece was an absolute blast. I forgot that this was a remake of a 2003 game bc I was just enjoying it so much. The humor and dialogue was like a time capsule of classic SpongeBob that hit me in the perfect nostalgia spot for a show I also religiously watched. And the fact that I got to share it with my niece who also loves SpongeBob made it super memorable with so many laughs and frantic moments playing. I’m super grateful they remade a game I probably would never have gotten to experience otherwise💛💙

This is one of the best 3D platformers ever (and sixth gen games!) and I refuse to hear otherwise. 😂 Like for real, this thing has open world, collectathon stuff, fast travel, sliding, weapons upgrades, epic bosses. The only one that I personally like more is Mario 64. I replay this game like once every year, it's just great.

as a kid i remember this game but never played it but after watching this video decided to play it and wow this game still holds up years later, but as good as this game is my favorite still has to be the spongebob movie game on ps2 mainly due to childhood nastalgia

I loved this game. I used to play it on my PS2 until it stopped working for some reason. It was fun while it lasted. Then there was the remake. They released the game on mobile too. I never thought of playing BfBB on mobile. The graphics were mind blowing. We are never too old to play SpongeBob video games or watch episodes. Overall, this is my favorite 3D platformer yet.
One of my nieces had this game for the Gamecube. I don't know if she still has it or not though.
I did play the entirety of the Rehydrated remake for it on PS4 and managed to get every trophy for it, including the Platinum trophy....that was very frustrating -_- (I'm looking at you Kelp Forest).

This game is going to be 20 years old this year. Man I feel old. I played this when I was 5-6 and it is my second favorite video game of all time. I have 100% rehydrated 10 times since it came out and I remember where the socks are by heart.
2:27 that's why I still have my copy of Jak 3. It's sooo scratched up and it's greatest hits and I have a great condition black label copy of the game but I'll never give up the copy my great aunt gave me.
This and Scooby Doo night of 100 frights were my favorite THQ kids games back in the day

The Simpsons Hit & Run is SO DANG GOOD too, and it was released around the same time, but never got a remake like BFBB.
Battle for Bikini Bottom gets all the love but the SpongeBob SquarePants Movie Game played very similarly and I remember having a lot of fun with it as well. You should play that one too if you haven’t yet. I’d love for that one to get a port on modern consoles as wel!

With Rehydrated we got the actually TV show voice actors for the first time. Thought that's a cool fact

Revenge of the Flying Dutchman was the one I played first love that game so much it’s not a bad game just has not aged well if they were to do a remake or remaster tho yes please

I have a golden spatula that I earned but it is glitched and won't let me pick it up. It is frustrating to run into this kind of thing, because my son and I have had a lot of fun playing this together.

I feel the same way about not only this game, but SpongeBob Revenge of the Flying Dutchman for PS2 and GameCube. I loved that game more than BFBB. But both great games nonetheless.

Revenge of the Flying Dutchman was not bad, i actually enjoyed the exploration more there. But i do agree that Battle for Bikini Bottom is the prefect balance, but i would never consider Revenge of the Flying Dutchman bad. It was slower gameplay yes, but it still had a big world and still is immersive

I am little late to comment but I just wanted to say how much I loved the original Battle for bikini bottom on my GameCube along with the SpongeBob movie game. Both were such fantastic games I could replay over & over again. Growing up in that time was just an amazing time. I grew watching the show along with Scooby Doo which also had a very fun game by the same developers Heavy Iron studios.
The remake is a very solid remake & I think it's worth noting all the extra stuff that was included that was scrapped from the original release like the multiplayer & several stages & boss battles.
A truly excellent 3D Platformer - just as good as others of that gen like Jak, Sly, Mario and many others.
I agree this game is very good, although I kind of prefer the original over rehydrated. I was surprised you said it’s your favorite 3D platformer. As a huge fan of 3D platformers, I would definitely recommend trying the Jak trilogy, any Mario 3D platformer, especially Galaxy 2, the Ratchet PS2 trilgoy, the Sly games, and the Ape Escape trilogy.

Battle for Bikini Bottom is an amazing game. Rehydrated is okay enough. The remade graphics are fine, but almost a bit too clean. It lost the old art style and some of the charm that came with it. Like how new Spongebob episodes have a somewhat different art style to the 90s and early 2000s Spongebob show. I'm okay with it, but I think they overdid it with a few things, like the shiny objects don't really sparkle anymore, they're more like a slightly glowing smudge in a flower shape. They're a lot less florescent than they used to look.
That said, my main issues with Rehydrated are the controls. It's so subtle. But there are some differences in the way Spongebob and the others move and control. For example, Spongebob's standard net attack no longer has the slight deceleration effect it used to have to slow your decent after jumping. It's minuscule, but just enough to where you won't make some jumps you feel like you should. His viking helmet bash also has some different physics that throw me off. Like you drop like a rock after using it.
Maybe some of these things were patched since I played, but it just didn't feel as good as the original and I actually went back to play the first stage of the original again right before Rehydrated came out. My wife enjoyed it. I loved it and had trouble putting it down. Rehydrated came out and my wife put it down within an hour and I put it down by the end of Jellyfish fields and had no interest in going back. There's nothing tremendously different, other than the removal of some glitches that I didn't use anyways, but in just the basic controls and look of the game that take away some of its specialness and make it more generic and less good feeling

This is considered to be one of the top licensed games of all time along side Simpsons Hit & Run, and if you're a woman, Bratz Rock Angelz. I also know the PC and GBA versions of the original are completely different games, Same title, Same cover art, Same story of Plankton's robots disobeying him, but Totally different gameplay. the PC version is a Minigame collection while the GBA version is a 2D puzzle platformer

I desperately want you to talk about DarkCloud. It has been in my top 5 games for the last 22 years. It was something that me and my mom did together when she was sick with stage 4 colon cancer. We played everyday, all day long, just doing dungeons and building the cities and towns.
