Super Mario Sunshine is a Refreshing Blast of Bizarre

- Nothing says 4th of July like sunshine. On this summer day we take a look at my Super Mario Sunshine review. Mario had a challenge for this game. With how amazing the previous games handled 3D platforming, the next game needed a unique idea so it wouldn't be considered a carbon copy. Enter FLUDD! A fun concept that proved that Nintendo was willing to be as creative as they needed to stand apart from their other games. And no matter how many years go by, Mario is always finding new ways to keep us playing.

I think we should be grateful for Super Mario Sunshine. It was a learning experience for Nintendo to help make Mario Galaxy an even better experience! And even though it was weird it was still a fun experience
Disgaea 5 would be a challenge.
Any one that beat any disgaea game: oh no.
Completing disgaea 5 in my opinion would be getting the Platinum trophy, and that's it nothing else. Not even getting all the charecters to Max level, that's how hard.
Happy 4th, Jirard! Hope you can find time to relax today!
And I'm sorry, but this is bothering me: I know you didn't mean anything but a joke by it, but please don't replace "God" with Mario. Joke theming, I get it, but that's one line I can't let someone I respect cross.
Dude is killing it with videos
I love Isle Delfino. Having the atmosphere based on different aspects of a tropical vacation is brilliant and very refreshing in my opinion.
It’s like Oahu which is where I live
I love the Mario kart track
Isle Delfino had a great theme, amazing music, and made you FEEL like you were in a hub. Sunshine made the entire world feel connected, which I feel is lost in modern titles like this.
@@fatbadger366 EXACTLY, some people don't realize how important it is to have a big hub world with a lot to do in it... I just keep dreaming about playing a Sunshine sequel with a hub world 3 times the size of Delfino Plaza :oo
I liked that the use of different regions of the same setting created a cohesive gamespace, a far better result than a typical checklist of the elements/terrrain.
Getting a yoshi onto the little island before he disappears nearly killed 12 year old me
replayed it this year at 20 years old and It is still the hardest part of the game
i was so frustrated with that one, until i saw the glitch to make yoshi go underwater. Didn't feel too bad cheating that one.

Still one of my favorite Mario games of all time...so many memories playing this on the Gamecube...I wish they did a sequel.
@@BigSmoke-xh5hi my mistake lol.
@@BigSmoke-xh5hi I mean you weren't rude or anything about it so it didn't bother me lol.
Here are MY favourite Mario games.
• Super Mario Land sequels (the original was great, but if Princess Daisy had tomboyish skills even in her debut, maybe she should’ve tried to fight her kidnapped who understated his welcome severely, Tatanga! She could’ve even been the second hero of the game, the first and only one being Mario!)
• Superstar Saga (the rest of the Mario & Luigi games are fun, but Superstar Saga holds a special place in many’s hearts that not even Partners in Time can rival)
• Super Mario Bros. 3 (although Super Mario Bros. 1 and both versions of Mario 2 are also awesome, I just wish Mario 2 for the NES weren’t just a dream)!
• Super Mario World duology (sure, Baby Mario’s crying in Yoshi’s Island can be a little annoying, but I’ve heard WORSE)
• Super Mario RPG
• Mario Bros. (Yeah, I went there!)
• Paper Mario: Sticker Star’s predecessors (again, yeah, I said the Paper Mario games in the 2000s are much better than Sticker Star, nobody will do anything about it!)
• Mario Golf: Advance Tour
• Donkey Kong Country 1 & 2 (SNES)
• Mario Party 3
• Wario Ware
Sunshine is an honorable mention.
They probably won’t make a sequel (sadly, cause I also love sunshine) but I’d say there’s a good chance of a remake in the future
I doubt they would ever make a sequel.. i could see an delfino island world in a new mario game where u use flood for like 10 stars... an thats it.
I hope we someday get Mario Sunshine definitive edition, with some new areas, improved mechanics and controls, and overall improvements to polish the game since it was a bit rushed. I don't know if a sequel is what the game needs, I think an expanded version of the original would be best.
I also like the rebranding of the channel to have a more video essay vibe! I think it's a great approach! You've cemented your format and made it understandable, so I think these new video titles are great!
Pog
I just hope they allow true GameCube controller support if it ever comes to Switch. RE4 tried, but you couldn't do some of the QTE's because they were set to ZL/ZR instead of just L/R. I wonder what they would do to make up for the lack of analog triggers.
Luv you Tyler
Is there a Mario Sunshine Randomizer? That would be a thing you would want to play on your chanel.
Make it easier to find Blue Coins and fix the Pachinko game. All I need for a remake of Sunshine.
I feel like the mario series is so familiar with doing weird things that any future game featuring weird concepts whouldn't seem out of place 😂

I didn’t get super into Nintendo until the Gamecube so Sunshine was my first Mario game. It’ll always be one of my faves because of all the memories I have attached to it, but it’s interesting to hear your take as someone who played the other 3D Mario games first! Sunshine is definitely weirder than the rest lol
Super Mario Sunshine was my first ever Game Cube game! And I still hold my copy dear to my heart 18 years later.😄
Isle Delphino is one of my favorite Mario locations, hands down. I just love the chill vibes and how the levels are not the generic world types, but extensions of Isle Delphino istelf
Not American, Canadian here. But I put 5 years in the service, 3 years full time with 2 tours. Its really great you did something like that for the community. Love this channel, and you just gave me yet another reason to love it harder.
This game is fun but out of all 3D Mario games that are rumored to be remastered, THIS IS THE ONE THAT NEEDS IT!

Sunshine is so underrated
Insane that this game is 21 years old. Graphics still hold up. Imagine how good the developers are, utilizing two decades old hardware like this.
Sunshine is definitely one of my favorite Mario games. I adored the tropical setting, FLUDD was fun, cleaning the sludge off everything meshed well with my obsessive need to neaten things. I rarely 100% games, but this was one that I did, and I'd love a Sunshine 2 at some point.
Still my favorite game to play to this day. I found it through chuggaconrays lets play and I had a really tough time finding a copy of this game as a kid so when i finally got to play it... man I put so many hours in. It holds a very special place in my heart ❤
One of my favorite games ever. I cant wait for my son to get his hands on it in the rumored 3D Mario Collection rumored to be dropping on Switch later this year.
@@BigSmoke-xh5hi Wii > Switch with Homebrew Channel you can just emulate the Gamecube.
@@MtthwPerry3 you dont even have to homebrew the Wii for it to emulate the gamecube
Oh yeah that just means Wii will always be better than the Switch. You even can emulate the Gamecube on WII U with a Gamecube controller adapter.
@@MtthwPerry3 playing GC games on Wii and Wii U isn't emulation though
Wait if that does happen whoa super Mario 64
I remember playing this without even having a goal in mind, just chilling. Using the fish bowl to scuba dive in Noki Noki bay, putting on the tropical shirt and sunglasses and watching Mario fall asleep in the shade on the beach, and testing to see if I could match Shadow Mario’s jumps without using FLUDD.
Just 100% the game for the first time, love this game - especially the FLUDD shenanigans . By the way how did you only die 9 times ? I must have died 100-150 times.
seriously, how did he not die 100 times to pachinko alone?
I love Super Mario Sunshine, and I love the whole tropical island vibe it has going on. It feels like that vibe is expanded on through the awesome music and especially all the dialogue from all the Pianta's and Noki's throughout the different areas in all the different missions (they do change depending what mission you're in!) that just feels very immersive, which the majority of players would've never even considered to look at. The game just has so much personality.
I grew up playing this game alot. I liked the voice acting, I wish it would come back in some capacity (just like I hope most, if not all, mainline Zelda games keep voice acting going forwards). Also, like most everyone else, I want a sequel! I hope we get one someday
Bowsers voice acting was awful
Sometimes I wonder what Wind Waker would’ve sounded like with voice acting in the cutscenes🤔
@jakeyolky Yea, I didn't care for Bowser's voice....but everything else was good imo!
@Piage Fabez I like to use toon Link's "hyahs" and everyone's similar noises to imagine that. I imagine voices exaggerated somewhat to match the cartoon style, but there r some scenes that I think would b ruined if the voices were exaggerated....so I go back and forth I suppose. Either way it would certainly b interesting!
A sequel would be amazing!!!
No. NO. Was BOTW voice acting GOOD to you?! Did it convey emotion like Twilight Princess, which didn't have voice acting?
"I loved mario 64 because...well who didnt?"

I personally hate Mario 64 because i’m terrible at it lmao. I appreciate it and i’m fully aware of how incredible and revolutionary it is, but i’m so god awful at it I never have any fun playing. I just stick to watching speedruns
Ooo, does he not like Mario 64?
yea because we all know his word is law....
FakkuElite I think imma get some flack for saying this, buuuut...
Is it safe to say that Arin isn’t exactly good at games in general?
Dirtbike Dom I’ve never thought of Mario 64 as that hard of a game
What the heck are you talking about, this is a freaking masterpiece from whatever perspective you see it. Hahah, great content man!
The lack of the dive in Galaxy feels so much worse that the lack of long jump in Sunshine for me personally
I’ll be honest, I never really got other people’s issues with Mario sunshine. I never had the problems other people seemed to have. The pachinko level, the camera and the boat (also the chucksters) I found very easy. I hated the parts without fludd, I like to refer to it as acapela hell
the parts without flood are a nightmare, the game was clearly designed around it so when you take it away its a mess.
Sunshine was underrated IMO. Sure, the camera isn't as good as the games that came after it, but it certainly was an upgrade from Mario 64. F.L.U.D.D. was a great mechanic, and the ability to use it to float REALLY helped with 3D platforming. As nostalgic as I am for 64, those two things place it leaps and bounds above. It was great for its time and I've gone back and played it and had fun.
I’m honestly watching this just to build my hype for the collection I’m so exited to play sunshine
Me too I've also been listening to the sound track
Jirard, thanks for putting so much time and love into these videos. Seeing tons of your completionist videos actually inspired me last year to get all the Shines in this game, and I did. I had a pretty good time. Not my favorite game to 100%, but one that I loved before completion and one I love even more after.
However, I must disagree with a few things. This is the internet after all. :)
I actually really like the camera, I feel it controls well. Yeah, it can mess up from time to time, but I prefer the ability to fully control the camera over a fixed camera like Galaxy's.
Also, I like the voice acting. I get why some people find it cheesy or even bad, but I find it to be really entertaining. While I wish the cutscenes were skippable, I find the voice acting gives the game a Saturday Morning Cartoon vibe, and I love that.
I still respect your opinions, but these are my own.
I really liked Sunshine when it first came out and haven't played it since. After playing through Odyssey I've been thinking about going through and giving this one another go. I'm still on the fence. What really strikes me is how good the game still looks compared to later Marios. I really can't see much a difference between Sunshine, Galaxy, and even Odyssey. They all look very similar, and in my opinion, still pretty good.
I use to say to my friend during gamecube days i dont see how the graphics can get much better and really they havent changed much.
@@aslushymachine Diminishing returns huh.
I kinda feel the same. We've had some improvements, sure. But overall it doesn't feel like a major improvement.
Objectively, it is, but in terms of look and feel? Not really...
I mean...Sunshine is pretty, but let's not get it twisted. Odyssey is way more visually impressive (for a Nintendo game).
@@dixonb.tweenerlegs4225 Yeah youre right, but I was talking in terms of Mario games when I said that forever ago. Obviously games have come a long way. But I will say though that I've recently modded my Gamecube and have been playing games on it lately and games still look damn good on it. Like Mario Kart Double Dash still looks pretty modern to me and could pass as a modern game.
The completionist: beats mario sunshine
Super mario 3d all stars: do it again
I actually liked the voice acting, it gives the game more realism and you immerse in the story more.
I love how they wait for Jirard to re-complete Sunshine before releasing it again in HD
Well glad you liked the alternate 100% screen. Poor Johnny got permanent scarring for it
"In America you stand up for what you believe in and argue with everyone else around you"
Hank Hill: You're got dang right.
I remember seeing an interview with Shigeru Miyamoto when someone asked who Bowser Jr.'s mother was and he said it was himself lol....
The controls in Mario sunshine are perfect. They’re the type that you have to get used to and then when you do you can’t believe you a problem with them to begin with. FLUDD is one of the greatest accessories Mario has ever had and when you know how to use it and control Mario you’ll be moving as fast as a ninja who weirdly has a water jet pack on.
"There are many great things about Mario"

THIS IS THE GREATEST 3D MARIO GAME EVER CREATED
I think this game also introduced Toadsworth, who for me at least has become a staple, but that might just be because this was my first 3D Mario.
Feels good watching this on the morning of the Mario 3D All Stars reveal
True
Never had this game owned but only played it at a local McDonald’s that used to have a little area with GameCubes and this was one of the games. Every time we went I’d immediately try and play the game. I tried getting as far as I could but never could get past like the first 1 or 2 levels since it the GameCube was set to always reset completely every now and then
The actual game review doesn’t begin until 2:35
I will never forget what bowser said to mario in the bathtub
"MARIO! HOW DARE YOU DISTURB OUR FAMILY VACATION!" *roars*
Was Peach also in the tub?
I love this game so much. Brings back tons of nostalgia and happy memories. If only I could relive that period.
6:20 What? There are points in Galaxy 1 and 2 where you can't move the camera at all and it led to unnecessary deaths because I wasn't able to adjust the Camera and see the attack that was coming from off-screen that knocked me off a ledge and into a Black Hole.
Can we just take a moment to appreciate the fact that every episode of The Completionist has custom art
So glad you finally covered super Mario sunshine again! It's my favorite Mario game ever!
This is literally one of my favorite games of all time. I put so many hours into it as a kid and never get tired of revisiting it. I’m so sad it’s never been revisited by Nintendo.
I know many hated it, but forcing a plumber to clean up shit on his vacation was ironic and kind of funny
We need a sequel for this game.

Or at the very least a remake
We need a HD Remasterd and then a Sequel
Yes.

Here's my opinion. Mario 64 has nostalgia and the first 3d game factor. Being the first 3d game and having such nice control goes VERY far. Mario sunshine has a charm to it, being vacation and mario sporting a short sleeve. But yeah those bowsers voice and script, all you can say is what were they thinking
About to pick this game up for $40, can’t wait to play it!
My absolute favorite 3D Mario game. I remember playing this as a kid and enjoying the colors, environment, voice acting, & music.
I miss this game and sometimes I wish I could go back and replay it.
Mario is the Mickey Mouse of Asia, more specifically of Japan 🤣🤣
No its Pikachu Mario is the master chief or something
@The Gaming Paladin Mickey himself never had that much star power. The Mickey, Donald and Goofey universe itself did though and still does. At least Ducktales 2017 and the kinda gross Mickey Shorts.
Mickey was pretty cool until kingdom hearts 3
mario is more popular than mickey mouse these days
No it’s Totoro!
That soundtrack takes me back man. Sunshine is still my favorite Mario title. I had Yoshi, a tropical theme, a squirt gun and fun physics. What's not to love?
I got this game when it came out and remember thinking, "This is the first time I've played a game that was just FUN in a long time."
I was like...16.
I still cry to the soundtrack of this game the tropical environments with music that fits along with some tasks that make you feel like a tourist of an actual tropical island

I've been looking forward for this review ever since you decided to do New Game+!

Sunshine was one of those game that I bought instantly upon seeing it simply based on how good Mario 64 was, but was then relatively fast weirded out. What made me put it down for a while tho was not it's weirdness, more that it felt a bit boring in some places, and unreasonably hard in others, with not much in between in the eyes of my younger self. When I eventually came back to it tho - because when I hate one thing then it's buying games that I never finish - I had a blast and really liked it a lot. Except for maybe the lava ride at the end. But otherwise the game really is fine. Weird but fine.
