Holy cow batman, I got this album since the first day it came out, well almost, wow. As I grew up in New York and infested illegal drug culture city. Tunes like this help you to survive some how, its to long to explain. Please, just listen to this fantastic get together and jam your heart out jam, wow! it still sounds like when I first heard it on the jazzfusion radio station. This also influence like the, come what the F is this out of the world music like Hendrix, Zepplins, Jaco and weather report, return forever and hundreds of other never ever before seen or ever to be again music geniuses and under ground heavy metal, punk rock artist and classical magical stuff like 'the rite off spring by Stravinsky! WOW! . Thanks, now I can watch it live, I survive all this time to watch my inner strength survival power as this song gave me back then, Thanks and also to my old hero and some what of a conga player Duran also thanks, believe it or not! Happy to be alive and thanking you for getting this for everybody....
@olflatop After a long while, I've developed an "It was in the 80's? Excused." complex if the artist is innovative enough or musically competent. However, I have to say that I never thought that for anything in this video. Their fashion wasn't terrible at all for the 80's.
There is also another Some Skunk Funk live performance from 1980. Live in Pori Jazz festival, Finland. th-cam.com/video/vKyJou39Kks/w-d-xo.html Neil Jason is on fire. Check it out!
My high school jazz band director gave us this chart one day. I thought it was one of the coolest songs we ever played through. The next day, he brought in a recording of the song. When I realized that we played this thing at almost half-tempo and I still struggled to keep up, I threw my saxophone in the trash.
Never heard of Richie Morales until i saw this version on TH-cam about 10 years ago. Drummers i was familiar with: Billy Cobham. Tony Williams. Jack DeJohnette. Harvey Mason. Vinnie Colaiuta. Dave Weckl. Alex Acuna. Al Foster. Idris Muhammad. Mike Clark. Lenny White. Billy Hart. Steve Gadd. Airto Moreira. But not Morales.
Michael Narada Walden played similar on those days... and was globally totally underrated as a top drummer. Same with the former drummer of Gino Vanelli, Mark Craney. There is another top drummer that needs more attention... Nick D'Virgilio. Unfortunately he seems to like more, doing interviews with other drummers and selling drums for Sweetwater ;-)
Even though they screw up the first "B" section, they don't loose their cool. A mark of true musicianship and professionalism! Not to mention, it shows that even gods can make mistakes, which at least for me, makes me feel better about mistakes I've made on stage in the past :)
I have a very close friend & to this day we have always tried to find a obscure group or individual musicians that will completely blow either one of us away. Well back in the day we would tell each other; "Well there's a band I know that will blow you away more!" & try to prove it. Sooo with that being said, my friend to me to see these guys who I've never heard of. They played this song. I literally had to be peeled off of the back wall of the auditorium when this song was over.
I use this vid as a lesson to bands I mentor, that no matter how tight your band is, (and they certainly are tight), excessive and unnecessary loud noodling in between songs on stage can make even the most accomplished, tightest bands look like rank amateurs.
@@geirrogn6370 Pros have their settings done before they get on stage. At any rate, the noodling of more than one player was louder than, and obviously disturbing the lead entertainer's interaction with the audience. Beyond no-go, it is a disrespect to everyone, including the self. At best, signal the sound tech to mute the monitor and FOH for the instrument, turn the amp down, then make any unforeseen adjustments. Ten seconds at most, then the show goes on undisturbed.
@@geirrogn6370 Even back in 1980 we didn't do that, you could be fined or even fired for such, but even if such was not the case, we never wanted to look as if we were rehearsing on stage during a show. Not only could we not get away with it, but we didn't want to get away with it. The standard motto was "Practice at home, perform on the show".
No it's not dying, if anything it's more popular than ever, interest in jazz has spread across the globe, there are healthy regional scenes all over the world, how else do you have end up with guys like Lionel Loueke playing with Herbie Hancock? jazz is absolutely not dying, and if you still doubt it, look at the level of interest right here on youtube for starters.
Props to Larry, but he didn't "invent this style of music". He is credited with innovating the "slap" technique with Sly, but fusion/jazz/funk like this developed organically over time.
don't understand why you guys are raggin on the bassist, i've nvr heard of him but ill think ill check him out because i just saw some first class playing...
also @ ojideagu: Transcribing isn't meant for stealing licks, it's about understanding how those licks fit with the chords. You see how non-chord tones are used to emphasise the chord tones, and what you thought were random notes are really a well thought out pattern. When you understand how enclosures, passing tones and common tones work, it really opens up your playing. And don't get me started on tri-tone substitutions and altered chords!
dude, talk to any real jazz musician who has been around for the last 20 years. they will tell you the same story. jazz is dying. sorry to burst your bubble, but thems is the facts. interest level from the internet doesnt count. what counts is number of real gigs available for jazz musicians, amount of radio airplay, how many records they sell, and how much they are paid for gigs. all in decline brother.
i agree, the bass player was seemed pretty busy for a lot of the song and needed to lay out a lil bit more but hey who the fuck am i to talk ..his solo was pretty cool and he put a lot excitement into his playing thats for sure except when he started ripping jaco's river people line @ 6:57 haha but it was probaly unintentional and he didn't seem cocky he was just having fun
yes it most certainly is dying. firstly, jazz used to be the pop music of the day. it has evolved from that point continuously towards less people attending concerts and less people buying recordings. it's a slow painful death...there used to be jazz clubs all over the place.
Neil jason is not a legendary bassplayer. He's just a regular session guy, and he copes with the Brecker gig very well. He's definitely not a jazz player, which means it's useless to compare him to Jaco. The definitively legendary bassplayer on Letterman is Will Lee b.t.w.!!
the key to improvising is to play what you feel. its from the soul not music theory or w.e you are talking about. You can tell a computer all the rules of music but it will never write a song. Any way... great tune
ignore the first post.its been a long day.im tired.i think you know where im coming from :) peace and love to all human beings.! irrespective of colour, religion, nationality or sexual preference!! x x x
I didn't dig that bass player at all...sounded like a half ass mix between jaco and les claypool. And he seemed pretty cocky about the crap he was playing. Ah well. Randy killed it though.
Ha, the brothers actually mess up a short section of the head... If you know the tune, you'll know what I'm talking about... ;) Nevertheless - a killer performance as usual.
Did anyone else notice Randy and Mike mess up the head? They play the wrong line too early...at least I think so? Besides that - killer performance as usual.
It's Miles Davis with even more enrgy and creativity. Too bad Michael Brecker is cold dead now. And every instrumentist there is effin' good! Electric!
I am going to transcribe the fills here and the main beats but then Ill just sorta improv it myself. Like Ill get the main stuff and beats but If I dont like the beats Ill just make my own beats up. But I am really wanting to learn this !
I was there too. I think the youtube video is slowed down actually. They were flying so fast all you could see was white powder....
Hottest song ever! There wont be a song written like that for decades!
One of the best jazzrock trumpetsolos I have ever heard.
"Very dirty"
Greasy
These guys are the best and push it (jazz-funk) to it's ultimate conclusion!
Right now JAZZ heal me from any virus!!..orgazmus!!❤️❤️❤️
Fusion at world class niveau, what a gem!
Still one of my favourite tunes of theirs!
Holy cow... that's a volcano eruption of notes they're playing.
The drummer is just wonderful ^^
And Michael is just the best forever...
Think my brain just melted from epicness.......
incredible!! the whole thing, mindblowing!
Yeah.. but that beginning of the trumpet solo 2:09... Totally love this
this is GREATEST JAZZ-Funk ever)))
VERY VERY COOOOOLLLLLL!!!!!
Never heard of them before, but what a great musicisians!
During the bass solo you can tell that the guitar player is loving the slap.. It was still a new style at that point.
Neil Jason!!!!absolute killer bass!

Amazing
Unreal.
Meraviglioso!
Awsome!
Since its inception, there's never been anything wrong with jazz.
The problem with jazz has always been the people playing it, never the music itself.
genios!!!
Super
This song is so BEAST... If this guys and Tower of Power had battle of the bands it would be EPIC>>
Neil Jason is the fucking man. Who knew a lumberjack could rock out so hard on bass?
I want that snare....wow!
It's not the snare.
Oh my god. I just pissed my pants.
Sooooo tight
Niel... You are just so good :O
Wow!
@brainandnerve Richie Morales I believe, they introduce the members in the very beggining of the video. :P
🌿🙂❣️🎶
@minor7b5SM he does! :P
where can i get a transcription of this?????
Michael didn't take a solo? thats weird
Owch!
@Erikolson99 Only in funk can you get a bass sound like that! :D

Get some hot sauce....listen to hip bop by Victor Wooten.
2:40, 3:26 Rimsky-Korsakov who????

wow!!!! Who´s the bassist?
He literally introduced the band in the beginning
Triadic my native language is portuguese, my english is so bad to understand it on that video.
Ah, I see. If you still need to know, the bassist is Neil Jason.
Triadic thank you so much.
Is that Richie Morales or Billy Cobham on the drums!?
+Martin Turner thanks :) excellent eye
Fantastic. But sadly no Mike Brecker solo. Neil Jason got the bandleader look at the beginning - lol
Randy sounds like Joe Satriani when he talks, lol
good players in their own right but you should listen cuz it's good not cuz someone else says it is.
Why can't I hear anything???
because you have got your volume turned down..?
Claude Debussy he can’t hear you mate
Very kind of you to say . I viewed it recently and was nice to see. I loved playing with the Breckers. Fun Gig.
Regards
Neil Jason
Neil, you are so cool. I love this video and love sharing your solo from this gig
The man himself??...ur shows with the breckers was something else
Thanks
You’re a most incredible bass player, thank you for sharing.
Hi Neil, I m a drummer but you are one of my all time bass guys! Keep it up👍🏾
No wayyyyyyyyyy!!!! We're not worthy!!! We're not worthy!!!!
lol how he shut up the bassist at the beggining
That hillbilly lookin' boy Neil Jason can SURE PLAY A BASS!!!! That solo was EVERYTHING!!! Richie Morales....killer on them drums!!!
Love Richie When he was the Drummer with Spyro Gyra!!!
This song yo....too filthy mane. Richie tore up the drums but I gotta say that Neil Jason is a monster on bass
That drummer is RIDING THE FCKING TRAIN YAA!!!!!!
The best verson, these cats are in the mudd. Going for it instead relaxing with it, todays versons.
I enjoyed how their humanity showed through when Mike & Randy blew the form in the first A section.👍
The band is on fire on this one.. pure jazz funk. Niel Jason is made of gold..
Neil Jason
This is one of the most ultimate JassFunk live performances ever, Have been folloved the Brecker Bros from their start late 70`s.
My school jazz band played this awhile back this is not a light piece
Loving it

Richie Moral-less for giving us so much hard time on this one.... XD
Amazing performance....

Wow man!!!
Woopie Loopie Doopie Noopie Nincompoopee!!!
I've got more respect for Randy after hearing this live. Such a brutal chart!
After revisiting this chart 4 years later, I gotta say that Randy sounds even better than I remembered. He is amazing in this!

Prescision Basses dont have 24 frets - they have the same as a J-bass. Another difference between the two is the split (2-part) pickup of the P-bass
if it was that simple, Lindsay Lohan and Charlie Sheen would be touring with Steely Dan.....
Between the E I, E I and O ing, he slapped the bass.
Which one is michael Brecker and who is his brother? This is great, I'm new to this!
@darianlh if they did the planets and universe as we know it would cease to exist
